Abstract

Pulmonary tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and is transmitted through droplets when coughing, sneezing, talking, or spitting. This study aims to determine the relationship between various factors and the behavior of TB patients in preventing transmission within their families. The study used a cross-sectional design and was conducted in Sibolahotang SAS Village, Balige Sub-district, Toba District, involving a total sample of 24 pulmonary TB patients diagnosed as smear-positive and undergoing DOTs therapy. The analyzed factors included age, gender, education, occupation, nutritional status, knowledge, housing density, and the role of health workers. The results showed that all these factors had a significant relationship with TB prevention behavior (P < 0.05), with gender being the most dominant factor ( Exp( B) = 106.648). It was concluded that various social and environmental factors influence TB prevention behavior. It is recommended that health workers become more proactive in educating patients through visual and printed media, and that health workers and cross-sector collaboration become involved in community education. TB patients are also advised to adopt healthy behaviors such as covering their mouths when coughing or sneezing, not spitting carelessly, wearing masks, maintaining proper nutrition, and adhering to treatment protocols.

Abstract

The postpartum period, which typically lasts for six weeks, is crucial for the recovery of the mother after childbirth. Special care is required during this time to ensure the health and well-being of both the mother and the baby. Cesarean section (CS) deliveries require more intensive care due to the increased risk of complications. Additionally, newborns are particularly vulnerable to health risks, including infections of the umbilical cord. Proper care of the umbilical cord is essential to prevent infections that can harm the baby’s health. The objective of this study is to implement education on umbilical cord care for patients experiencing nursing problems related to knowledge deficits regarding umbilical cord care. This scientific paper uses a descriptive case study design, involving one patient (US) as the subject, and data was collected through interviews and observations. The results of the assessment revealed that the patient had limited knowledge about proper umbilical cord care. After two educational sessions, the patient’s understanding improved. On the first day, the patient was able to answer 7 out of 10 questions related to umbilical cord care, while on the second day, the patient could answer 10 questions correctly, demonstrating a significant increase in knowledge. In conclusion, education on umbilical cord care proved effective in improving the patient’s knowledge, although further reinforcement is necessary. More interactive media could be utilized in future interventions to enhance understanding and ensure optimal care for the newborn. These findings underscore the importance of providing targeted education to new mothers to prevent potential health risks to their babies.

Abstract

The low quality of life of the elderly is often associated with the function of the family and the social support they receive, which can come from a partner, family, or community. As many as 70% of the elderly experience a decrease in quality of life, especially feelings of isolation and lack of attention from other family members. Objective: To determine the correlation between social support and the quality of life of the elderly. This study used a correlation methodology with a cross-sectional design. The population in this study was all respondents in RT 035 Batam city Sub-district, Batam City, with a total of 45 elderly in March-April 2025. The sampling technique used was total sampling. Instruments used: SSQ-6 and WHOQOL-BREF. The findings indicated that, according to the frequency distribution of social support, the majority of social support was moderate for as many as twenty people (44.4%). In contrast, the frequency of quality of life was moderate for as many as twenty-two people (48.9%). After completing the data analysis, the p-value was determined to be 0.004. The conclusion indicates a significant connection between the presence of social support and the quality of life experienced by elderly individuals.

Abstract

The United Nations states that the elderly population is increasing globally annually, from 771 million to 830 million people, accounting for 10 to 10,5% respectively. In Indonesia, the Central Bureau of Statistics reported the rise of the elderly population from 9,92% of the population in 2020 to 11,75% in 2023. Specifically in the Province of Central Java, the percentage of elderly population increases from 13,07% to 13,50% between 2022 and 2023. The rise of the elderly population could potentially pose a challenge to public development as they are often vulnerable and dependent, facing health and socioeconomic challenges. In order to combat this, the Government of Indonesia formed elderly schools, an educational and social program that aims to empower the elderly. This study aims to analyze the association between sociodemographic and health characteristic factors and the attendance rate of one of the elderly schools located in Central Java called The Elderly School of Darun Najah, Sambak Village, Kajoran District. This study uses an analytical observational quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. Sampling is conducted using a total sampling design resulting in 40 respondents. Data analysis is conducted in univariate and bivariate (chi-square and fisher's exact test) methods. Significant factors (p-value<0,05) of the attendance rate of the elderly school include age, sex, marital status, and employment status, while blood pressure and body mass index are not significant (p-value>0,05). This study recommends that elderly school administrators provide personalized facilities and activities that cater to their participants' characteristics.

Abstract

Drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) poses a serious threat to global public health and is a major barrier to achieving TB elimination targets. Epidemiological surveillance plays a central role in its control, yet its implementation faces various challenges, leading to gaps in detection and response. This literature review aims to synthesize the latest scientific evidence on the role, methods, and challenges of DR-TB surveillance to formulate a comprehensive overview as a basis for program improvement recommendations. A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed and Google Scholar for articles published between 2015 and 2025. From an initial 347 articles, 6 relevant studies from various countries were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria for narrative analysis. The analysis reveals a significant gap between the estimated disease burden and detected cases, with the sensitivity of surveillance systems in some countries (e.g., Brazil) reported as low (~46.4%) and massive diagnostic failures (59% in Madagascar). Strong evidence indicates that active community transmission is a key driver of the epidemic, demonstrated by high primary resistance rates (9% in Bhutan) and the presence of genetic transmission clusters (37% of cases in Pará, Brazil). The studies also highlight the potential of innovative methods such as statistical correction to improve estimation accuracy and genomic surveillance for detecting new drug resistance and mapping transmission. Conventional DR-TB surveillance is no longer adequate to address the current complexity of the epidemic. Future effective control demands a dual approach: strengthening fundamental health systems (diagnostics and logistics) integrated with the adoption of innovative, data-driven surveillance methods such as statistical modeling and genomics for a more accurate, timely, and precise response.

Abstract

Cough in toddlers is a common respiratory complaint and can disrupt sleep, appetite, and well-being. Synthetic therapies sometimes cause side effects, so the use of herbs is becoming an increasingly popular alternative. Starfruit flowers (Averrhoa blimbi L.) are rich in saponins, flavonoids, and tannins, which function as expectorants, antitussives, and anti-inflammatories. This pre-experimental study with a one-group pretest-posttest design aims to evaluate the effectiveness of starfruit flower decoction in relieving cough in toddlers. A total of 15 toddlers aged 1-5 years with mild to moderate cough without other therapies were given starfruit flower decoction (10 flowers boiled in 200ml of water) twice a day, 2 tablespoons per dose for 5 days. The results of the Wilcoxon test showed that the average cough frequency decreased from 8.0 ± 0.6 to 1.8 ± 0.7 (p = 0.002). This finding confirms that the decoction of starfruit flowers is effective in relieving cough in toddlers. It is recommended that this decoction be considered as a safe and easy-to-apply complementary therapy at home.

Abstract

Background: Both medical and non-medical approaches can be used to post-cesarean care for wound healing. Changing the bandage on the surgical site once a day is an example of medical post-sc care. This study aims to determine the effects of giving catfish to patients who have had caesarean sections. Methods: This study had 27 people and employed a quasi-experimental non-equivalent research design. Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted when a statistical test using the Wilcoxon Test produces a p value of 0.000, where p value (0.000) is less than 0.05. It may be concluded that catfish extract at the Dr. Shodiq Jember Clinic works well to speed up the healing process of SC wounds. Conclusion: Giving kutuk fish extract is effective for healing post-CS wounds. This is because kutuk fish is easier for the body to digest, and has a higher albumin content than eggs. The high albumin protein content in kutuk fish makes this fish effective for the wound healing process. The phenomenon in society, since long ago, people believe that kutuk fish can accelerate the wound healing process, however, some people dislike or are hesitant to eat kutuk fish due to its fishy flavor and odor, therefore kutuk fish extract obtained through such a process, it will be easier for people to consume it, and the wound healing process will run.
