Abstract

Objective: This study aims to examine the evolving role of the ‘Ulama as theological leaders within the framework of Al-‘Ulama Warasatul Anbiya, focusing on the integration of Wasatiyyah (Islamic moderation) in Islamic political governance to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Historically, the ‘Ulama have distanced themselves from direct political involvement to preserve religious authority and avoid governance entanglements. However, this approach has often created a disconnect between the ‘Ulama and society, diminishing the relevance of religious leadership in addressing contemporary political and societal challenges. Theoretical framework: The theoretical framework of this study draws on classical and modern Islamic political thought, particularly Ibn Taymiyyah’s Siyasah Shariyah, which emphasizes public trust (Amanah), cooperation (Ta'awun), and consultation (Shura). Literature Review: Previous literature highlights criticism of the reluctance of the ‘Ulama to reinterpret Islamic teachings in light of contemporary realities, which is seen as weakening their theological authority. Methods: This research employs qualitative methods, combining historical analysis and case studies. The data is critically analyzed to evaluate the role of the ‘Ulama in integrating Wasatiyyah into modern Islamic political governance. Results: The findings reveal that the Wasatiyyah approach provides a balanced framework for maintaining religious integrity while engaging in socio-political issues. The future relevance of the ‘Ulama depends on their ability to address modern challenges while upholding Islamic ethical values, guided by Maqasid al-Shari'ah (the higher objectives of Islamic law). Implications: The implications of this research suggest that active participation of the ‘Ulama in moderate political governance can enhance the role of religion in supporting SDGs, particularly in fostering just and inclusive governance. Novelty: The novelty of this study lies in the integration of Wasatiyyah and Maqasid al-Shari'ah as an operational framework to address contemporary political and societal challenges.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to analyze the current sukuk practices and formulate strategies to increase sustainability in sukuk transactions. The main focus of the research is to bridge the gap between sustainability principles and Islamic financial practices, particularly in sukuk transactions, to maximize their contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Theoretical framework: Based on sharia principles and sustainable finance theory, especially ESG aspects in Sukuk instruments. Literature review:  There is a considerable amount of sukuk literature, but studies on its relationship with sustainability and ESG are still limited and in-depth. Methods: Using qualitative methods through the analysis of literature and Islamic financial sector sources to evaluate the suitability of sukuk with sustainability principles. Results: The results show that sukuk has great potential as an innovative financial instrument that can directly support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including access to affordable renewable energy, infrastructure development, and the creation of sustainable cities and communities. Implications: Provides a basis for academics and policymakers to develop a sustainable sukuk policy framework. Novelty: Offers a new approach that explicitly links sukuk and ESG, as well as practical strategies for its integration in Islamic finance.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to analyze the development of the Zakat, Infaq, and Sadaqah (ZIS) system in Indonesia through a comprehensive literature review from a historical, legal, and social perspective. The main focus is to explore the evolution of ZIS as an instrument of wealth redistribution and social welfare in Islamic economics. In the context of rising poverty, unemployment, and other socio-economic challenges in modern Indonesia, this study evaluates the adaptation of traditional ZIS practices to contemporary needs, including their contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Theoretical framework: The theoretical framework of this research is based on Islamic economic principles, especially those related to wealth redistribution, social justice, and poverty alleviation. Literature Review: The literature review includes an analysis of changes in the implementation of ZIS based on evolving legal frameworks, dynamic social expectations, and changing economic conditions. By bridging historical practices and modern demands, this study highlights the important role of ZIS in addressing poverty and inequality in Indonesia. Methods: The research method uses a qualitative approach through a systematic review of academic publications, government reports, and non-government studies. The data collected is analyzed to identify trends, challenges, and opportunities in the ZIS system. Results: The results show that despite progress in the institutionalization and modernization of ZIS in Indonesia, significant challenges remain. Key problems include inefficiencies in collection and distribution mechanisms, lack of public trust, and inadequate legal and regulatory frameworks. These factors hinder the effectiveness of ZIS in reaching vulnerable groups and maximizing their impact. Implications: The implications of this study include recommendations for policymakers, clerics, and Islamic financial institutions in creating a sustainable and equitable ZIS framework to address the issue of poverty and inequality. Novelty: The novelty of this study lies in the integration of historical, legal, and social perspectives in the analysis of the ZIS system in Indonesia. This research makes a unique contribution by offering a comprehensive understanding of the development and challenges of ZIS in meeting modern needs, as well as opening up further research opportunities for ZIS optimization in realizing social justice and global economic growth for sustainable development goals (SDGs).

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to explore the integration of Islamic teachings on tolerance and multicultural education within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The focus is on analyzing the values of democracy, tolerance, and multiculturalism derived from the Qur'an and Islamic education, emphasizing their relevance in promoting global peace and inclusivity. The study is motivated by fundamental Islamic principles, including prohibitions against denouncing other religions, respect for human dignity regardless of belief, interfaith communication, freedom of religion, the prohibition of forced adherence to any religion, maintaining positive assumptions (husnudzan) about others, and acknowledgment of diverse religious practices. Theoretical framework: The theoretical framework is grounded in the intersection of Islamic ethics and the SDGs, particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education), Goal 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). Literature Review: The literature review highlights previous studies on tolerance in Islamic teachings and their implementation in educational settings, showcasing how Islamic education aligns with global goals. Methods: This research adopts a qualitative field study approach, collecting data through in-depth observations and interviews with educators and students at the University of Muhammadiyah Surakarta. Results: The findings reveal that democratic and tolerant multicultural values in Islamic education are implemented through three learning models: (1) Baitul Arqam for Muslim students during semesters 1-2, (2) Classical Learning for non-Muslim students in semesters 1-2, and (3) Integrated Classical Learning for both Muslim and non-Muslim students in semesters 3-4. The study demonstrates that these models effectively foster a culture of inclusivity and tolerance among students from diverse backgrounds. Implications: The findings have significant implications for developing educational frameworks that contribute to SDG targets by promoting peaceful coexistence and mutual respect. Novelty: The novelty of this research lies in linking Islamic educational practices with the SDGs, offering a unique perspective on the role of religious education in achieving global sustainability.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to analyze and compare the axiological foundations of knowledge from both Western and Islamic perspectives and explore the potential for their integration in supporting the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Theoretical Framework: Theoretical Framework focuses on the values underlying the development and utilization of knowledge, including ethical, goal-oriented, and beneficial aspects of human life. The main theories employed are epistemology and axiology from both perspectives, leading to a more holistic understanding of knowledge. Literature Review: Literature Review reveals significant differences between the Western approach, which tends to be more secular and rational, and the Islamic approach, which is more holistic, linking knowledge with spiritual and moral dimensions. Previous studies also emphasize the importance of integrating these perspectives to address the challenges of globalization and pluralism. Methods: This research employs a qualitative method with a comparative analysis approach. Data were collected through a literature review of both primary and secondary sources, including classical and contemporary works from Western philosophers and Islamic thinkers. The analysis compares the fundamental axiological principles of knowledge in both traditions and explores the potential for integration to enrich the understanding of knowledge. Results: Research findings show that despite fundamental differences in their views on the values of knowledge, there is potential for integration between Western rationalism and Islamic spiritual values. This integration provides a more comprehensive and applicable approach to knowledge development. Implications: Implications of this study highlight the importance of an educational framework that combines Western and Islamic perspectives to produce scholars who are not only technically proficient but also ethically and spiritually conscious. Novelty: Novelty of this research lies in its deeper understanding of the axiological foundations of knowledge through an interdisciplinary perspective and the exploration of potential integration between the two traditions to establish a more inclusive and applicable foundation of knowledge, which is highly relevant in supporting the SDGs.

Abstract

Objective: This study examines the synergy between the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), and Muhammadiyah in promoting religious moderation to contribute to Indonesia’s achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The primary objective is to explore how these three key actors collaborate in fostering moderation and how their efforts align with SDG targets, particularly those focused on peace, justice, and strong institutions (Goal 16). Theoretical Framework: Theoretical frameworks of religious moderation and functionalism guide the study, emphasizing the importance of balanced religious practices in a pluralistic society. Literature Review: The literature review highlights the roles of NU and Muhammadiyah in religious moderation, noting their unique contributions: NU’s inclusive Islam Nusantara approach and Muhammadiyah’s emphasis on Wasathiyah Islam. These frameworks underscore the importance of tolerance, justice, and harmony in national life, aligning with Indonesia’s commitment to promoting peace and reducing social fragmentation. However, studies also point to challenges, such as ideological differences between the two organizations and their relationship with the government, which complicate cross-sector collaboration. Methods: A qualitative research methodology was employed, utilizing interviews, observations, and document studies to gather data from key informants within the Ministry of Religious Affairs, NU, and Muhammadiyah. Thematic and constant comparative analysis were applied to identify key patterns and themes, including the interplay between religious moderation, government policy, and SDG implementation. Results: The research findings reveal that while progress has been made in promoting religious moderation, the lack of effective collaboration between the government and religious organizations remains a significant barrier. NU’s close ideological ties with the government contrast with Muhammadiyah’s critical yet supportive stance, leading to fragmented efforts. This fragmentation hampers the full realization of shared goals, including the achievement of SDGs in Indonesia. Implications: The study’s implications suggest that strengthening cross-sectoral collaboration and aligning organizational efforts are essential for achieving religious harmony and advancing SDG targets. Novelty: The novelty of this research lies in its focus on the intersection of religious moderation and SDGs, offering insights into how religious actors can contribute to sustainable development.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to describe the methods of memorizing the Holy Scripture, identify similarities and differences in implementation, and assess the effectiveness of these methods in elementary school settings. Grounded in a case study design, the research was conducted in three Indonesian elementary schools that actively implement Holy Scripture memorization programs. Theoretical framework: The theoretical framework guiding this study integrates behavioral and humanistic learning theories, which emphasize structured repetition, teacher modeling, and personalized emotional engagement. Literature review: The literature on Quranic memorization highlights the importance of oral transmission and teacher-student interaction, particularly through the talaqqi method. However, few studies have provided a comparative analysis across different schools using this method within the broader context of child education and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Methods: Data were collected from teachers, students, and parents through interviews, observations, and document analysis. The data were then processed using the descriptive-interpretative model proposed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana, involving data reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. Results: The findings reveal three main outcomes: (1) all schools apply two core memorization methods—talaqqi wal mushahabati and talaqqi wal istiqlali—each utilizing three tone techniques: free tone, UMMI two-tone rost, and AN-NUR four-tone rost; (2) all schools shared a common approach grounded in behaviorist-humanist integration; and (3) differences were observed in tone applications, which influence students’ engagement and retention. Implications: The implication of this study suggests that the talaqqi method is highly effective for elementary-level students, as it aligns with their psychological development and supports consistent memorization outcomes.  Novelty: The novelty of this research lies in its integration of traditional Islamic pedagogy—specifically the talaqqi method—with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), offering a unique framework for promoting inclusive, equitable, and quality religious education for children in elementary schools within a modern global development context.
