Abstract

Objective: This study aims to examine the concept of the caliph in the Qur'an from the perspective of tarbawi interpretation as the basis for developing student leadership character to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially in the pillars of quality education (SDG 4), peace and justice (SDG 16), and partnerships to achieve goals (SDG 17). Theoretical framework: Theoretically, this research is based on the tarbawi interpretation approach, which is the interpretation of Qur'anic verses that emphasizes the values of education and character formation. Literature review: The literature studied includes classic and contemporary tafsir books such as Tafsir al-Misbah, and Tafsir Ibn Kathir, as well as scientific studies related to Islamic character education and leadership in the context of education. Methods: The research method used is qualitative through library research. The data collection technique is carried out by studying the text and analyzing the content of the verses of the Qur'an, especially QS. Al-Baqarah: 30 and QS. Shad: 26, as well as the interpretation of the scholars of these verses. Results: The results of the study show that the concept of the caliphate reflects the role of humans as leaders who are responsible for maintaining justice, and trust, and fostering a generation that obeys divine and humanitarian values. These leadership values are in line with the principles of character education that are needed in the formation of young leaders with integrity, vision, and sustainability. Implications: The implication of this study is the need to integrate the concept of the caliphate in the curriculum of character education of students in schools, both formal and informal, to instill Islamic leadership values from an early age. Novelty: The novelty of this research lies in the affirmation of the interpretation of tarbawi as a strategic approach in bridging Islamic teachings and the global goals of the SDGs, as well as as a holistic and transformative model of leadership character education.

Abstract

Objective: The fundamental purpose of education is to cultivate learners’ capacity to think critically as an essential component of human development. Critical thinking aligns with higher-order cognitive processes in Bloom’s taxonomy, particularly analyzing, evaluating, and creating, which are central to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 4 on quality and inclusive education. This study aims to examine the effect of Model-Based Learning, operationalized through Problem-Based Learning (PBL), on students’ critical thinking skills in Islamic Studies at SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Kartasura. Theoretical framework: The theoretical framework integrates constructivist learning theory, Bloom’s cognitive taxonomy, and the SDGs-oriented education paradigm, emphasizing learner-centered instruction and cognitive empowerment. Literature review: Prior studies highlight the effectiveness of PBL in promoting critical reasoning; however, empirical evidence within Islamic education contexts linked explicitly to SDGs remains limited. Methods: This research employed an experimental method using a pretest–posttest non-equivalent control group design. The participants consisted of 53 ninth-grade students, with 18 students assigned to the experimental group and 35 students to the control group. Data were collected through structured pre-tests and post-tests designed to measure critical thinking indicators within the cognitive domain of Bloom’s taxonomy. Results: The findings reveal a statistically significant effect of PBL on students’ critical thinking skills in Islamic Studies. The Mann–Whitney test yielded an Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.001, indicating a significant improvement in the experimental group compared to the control group. These results demonstrate that Model-Based Learning contributes meaningfully to developing students’ higher-order thinking skills while supporting the goals of sustainable and quality education. Implications: The implications of this study suggest that integrating SDGs-oriented PBL into Islamic education can enhance cognitive competence, foster critical awareness, and prepare students for complex social challenges. Novelty: The novelty of this research lies in its empirical linkage between Model-Based Learning, Islamic Studies, and SDGs within a junior high school context, offering a replicable framework for sustainable educational practices.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to analyze the legality and management of productive cash waqf in Indonesia, emphasizing its alignment with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The practice of waqf in Indonesia remains underutilized, with inefficiencies in the management of waqf assets hindering its potential contribution to societal welfare. Theoretical framework: The theoretical framework integrates Islamic jurisprudence on waqf, particularly focusing on its economic empowerment potential and the regulatory landscape provided by Law No. 41 of 2004 and other relevant legal instruments. Literature Review: A comprehensive literature review highlights best practices in waqf management and identifies challenges in implementation. Methods: This qualitative study employs a descriptive approach, relying on library research to examine secondary data from journals, legal documents, and research reports. Results: The findings reveal that Law No. 41 of 2004 outlines comprehensive guidelines for waqf management, including provisions for movable waqf, such as cash waqf, which is regulated under Article 28. The Indonesian Waqf Agency (BWI) plays a pivotal role in ensuring productive waqf management, focusing on utilizing waqf assets to enhance community living standards. The study identifies cash waqf as a transformative tool for achieving economic empowerment and contributing to the SDGs, particularly in eradicating poverty and promoting sustainable economic growth. However, challenges remain in ensuring professional and transparent management practices. Implications: The implications underscore the need for capacity-building initiatives for waqf managers and regulatory reforms to streamline waqf governance. Novelty: The novelty of this research lies in its exploration of cash waqf as a strategic instrument for sustainable development, offering actionable insights into optimizing its potential. By bridging the gap between Islamic jurisprudence and modern management practices, this study provides a framework for enhancing the economic impact of waqf in Indonesia.

Abstract

Objective: This study explores the process of forming and educating Tablighi female ulama at Pesantren Dar El-Wihdah, Sragen, and examines its contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions). The primary objective of this research is to analyze how an Islamic boarding school affiliated with the Tablighi Jamaat develops women religious scholars who are capable of engaging in da‘wah and community leadership. Theoretical framework: The theoretical framework draws on gender studies in Islamic education, social reproduction theory, and religious authority, emphasizing women’s access to knowledge and public religious roles. Literature review: The literature review indicates that previous studies on Tablighi Jamaat largely focus on male dominance in public preaching and highlight limited educational opportunities for women, often confining them to domestic or supportive roles. Research on Tablighi women’s education generally suggests insufficient preparation for independent da‘wah and scholarly authority. Methods: Addressing this gap, this study employs an ethnographic methodology, using participant observation and in-depth semi-structured and unstructured interviews with female santri, teachers, and pesantren leaders. Results: The findings reveal that Pesantren Dar El-Wihdah implements a systematic cadreization of female ulama through character-building programs, intensive mastery of classical Islamic texts (kutub turath), and structured training using Tablighi Jamaat manuals. Furthermore, the establishment of Rumah Qur’an (Ruqun) and Marhalah Ta‘lim Aly strengthens pedagogical quality and enhances women’s preaching skills and social engagement. These initiatives enable female santri to actively participate in religious dissemination and community interaction beyond the pesantren environment. Implications: The implications of this study demonstrate that faith-based educational institutions can significantly contribute to SDGs by promoting inclusive religious education and empowering women as agents of social and moral development. Novelty: The novelty of this research lies in highlighting an alternative model of Tablighi Jamaat education that successfully produces female ulama with scholarly legitimacy and public religious authority, challenging the prevailing male-centered narrative within the movement.

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to explore the integration of Islamic epistemology in ethical curriculum development to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The research focuses on aligning ethical values derived from Islamic teachings with modern educational practices, offering a transformative framework that contributes to global sustainability goals. The study emphasizes the importance of integrating ethical principles, such as justice (adl), beneficence (ihsan), and accountability (amanah), into curriculum design to foster responsible global citizens. Theoretical framework: The theoretical framework combines Islamic epistemological principles with the humanistic educational model, illustrating how ethical dimensions can shape pedagogy, learning outcomes, and societal impact. Literature Review: The literature review highlights the convergence of ethical frameworks in Islamic education with contemporary educational theories. Key references include works on Islamic epistemology, ethics, and SDG-related educational initiatives. This review identifies gaps in current curriculum models that fail to emphasize ethical values as foundational elements. Methods: A qualitative research method was employed, involving content analysis of Islamic epistemological texts, curriculum policies, and case studies from Islamic educational institutions. Data were gathered through document analysis and interviews with curriculum experts, educators, and policymakers. Results: The findings reveal that integrating Islamic epistemology into curriculum development fosters holistic education, bridging spiritual, intellectual, and social dimensions. Such integration enhances moral responsibility, critical thinking, and sustainable practices among learners. Implications: The implications of this study are significant for policymakers and educators seeking to design curricula that align with SDG principles. By emphasizing ethical values, the proposed framework promotes inclusivity, environmental stewardship, and social justice, directly contributing to Goals 4 (Quality Education) and 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions). Novelty: The study's novelty lies in offering a structured approach to ethical curriculum development grounded in Islamic epistemology, addressing both spiritual and material dimensions of education. It advocates for a paradigm shift where ethics is not merely an addition but a core component of curriculum design.

Abstract

Objective: This research was motivated by curiosity about the Muslim community of Gang Arjuna Kuyudan Makamhaji who understood and practised the verses concerning social concern for families infected with Covid-19. The verses in question are Q.S al-Maidah, 5:2 and Q.S al-Hasyr, 59:9. This study aims to investigate how the Muslims in Gang Arjuna acquire knowledge and understanding of Surah al-Maidah, 5:2 and al-Hasyr, 59:9, and how they practice these verses to assist Covid-19 infected families in both material and non-material forms. Theoretical Framework: The theoretical framework used in this study relates to social concern in Islam and its contribution to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to health and well-being. Literature Review: The literature review reveals that these verses teach the importance of mutual assistance and sharing with those in need, especially in crises such as the Covid-19 pandemic. Methods: The research method used is descriptive quantitative, employing closed questionnaires and Likert scale techniques. The number of respondents in this study was 20, but only 15 participated. Results: The results show that the Muslims in Gang Arjuna are very familiar with Surah al-Maidah, 5:2, and Surah al-Hasyr, 59:9, and they gain knowledge of these verses through reading the Qur'an and attending mosque studies. The people of Gang Arjuna also exhibit a high level of social concern for families infected with Covid-19, offering both material and non-material assistance, which is an implementation of their understanding of these verses. Implications: The implications of this research demonstrate that understanding the social values in Islam can strengthen social solidarity and support the achievement of SDGs, particularly in the context of health and community empowerment. Novelty: The novelty of this study is its emphasis on the practical application of Qur'anic verses as a form of social concern in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Objective: This study examines the implementation of Al-Islam and Kemuhammadiyahan (AIK) with an integration-interconnection approach at the University of Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) and its contribution to SDG 4 (quality education), SDG 16 (peace and justice), and SDG 17 (global partnership). Theoretical framework:  The theoretical framework is based on KH Ahmad Dahlan's thoughts on modern Islamic education, the concept of integration-interconnection of knowledge, contextual curriculum theory, the warning of "normal science", and the AIK policy as a compulsory course in PTM. Literature review: AIK is seen as a praxis of educational values that shape Islamic character, although it still faces a dichotomy of science. Integration-interconnection is believed to make AIK more transformative, in accordance with the ideas of Brady and Kuhn. The relevance of AIK is increasingly evident in the context of SDGs 4, 16, and 17. Methods: The research uses a descriptive-qualitative method based on literature studies with primary data (Muhammadiyah policy, AIK curriculum, learning practices) and secondary data (academic literature). The analysis follows the Miles & Huberman model, with validity maintained through credibility, transferability, dependability, and confirmability. Results: The results of the study show that the application of AIK based on integration-interconnection in UMS can produce learning that is not only a transfer of knowledge, but also a transfer of values. AIK directs students to a comprehensive understanding that includes cognitive, affective, and psychomotor aspects. This model is relevant to Muhammadiyah's vision of modern Islamic education that progresses and supports the achievement of SDG 4 (quality education), SDG 16 (peace and justice), and SDG 17 (global partnership). Implications: It is necessary to reconstruct the AIK curriculum to be transformative and contextual, to strengthen the identity of PT Muhammadiyah, improve the quality of education, foster student character, and support sustainable development.  Novelty: The novelty of this research lies in the association of AIK based on integration-interconnection in UMS with the achievement of the SDGs, so that AIK is positioned not only as a typical Islamic course of Muhammadiyah, but also as a strategic instrument for inclusive and sustainable global education development.
