Abstract

The quick closing valve cannot close quickly during training (drill) due to several technical factors. Conditions like this are very dangerous, especially when a fire occurs in the engine room which requires the use of a quick closing valve which must be able to close quickly. This research aims to analyze the decreasing performance of pneumatic quick closing valves on MT ships. Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques through direct observation on MT ships. Sultan Mahmud Baharuddin II, interviews, and documentation studies. Data analysis was carried out using two methods, namely the Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) method to identify the causes of decreased performance of the pneumatic quick closing valve, and the USG (Urgency, Seriousness, Growth) method to determine problem handling priorities. The research results showed that the decrease in the performance of the pneumatic quick closing valve was caused by a buildup of scale and paint coating on the valve parts, corrosion on the threaded shaft, and imperfect installation of the air pipe. The impact of this reduced performance includes delays in valve closure and the potential to worsen a fire if an emergency situation occurs. The handling efforts carried out are routine checks every week as well as maintenance and repairs according to the manual book.

Abstract

The purifier on board is one of the auxiliary machines which has a very important role to produce clean fuel. The use of this clean fuel is to support the operation of the ship's main propulsion engine and diesel generator engines in producing perfect combustion. In the operation of this purifier, Purifier operation often gets less attention that fresh water is very important to support the functioning of the purifier when working to purify fuel from liquid impurities and other solid impurities, because the function of fresh water in its operation includes operating water, sealing water and de sludge water. The data collection method used in this research was direct observation on the MV Sinar Sumba ship, literature study by reviewing manual books and discussions with engineers on board. From the data during the observation, literature study and interviews then analyzed and formulated and put forward using a qualitative descriptive method. The results of this discussion explain that in the purifier there are several parts that are very closely related to the smoothness and results of fuel refining, one of which is fresh water, because if fresh water is not available according to the required standards pressure and capacity, the purifier is not will be able to function properly. For example, if there is not enough fresh water that functions as a sealing water, then the oil will come out and be wasted through the water channels into the dirty oil tank.

Abstract

MT. SC Warrior ship is a tanker designed to transport processed oil cargo on long-distance shipping routes. One of the main facilities to support ship shipping activities is the Reverse Osmosis (RO) Fresh Water Maker system. This equipment functions to produce fresh water with the main ingredient being sea water. The RO system utilizes a high pressure pump and a micron filter membrane as the main components in the process of converting seawater into fresh water. The problem with RO is a decrease in fresh water productivity, causing a fresh water deficit in the ship. The problem is caused by low hydrostatic pressure in the RO system, and the micron filter membrane's function is not optimal in filtering sea water. This condition disrupts ship operations where the availability of fresh water is insufficient in quantity. In order to avoid the same problems, proper preventive and corrective measures are needed.  Planned maintenance according to PMS and correct procedures must be carried out properly and correctly, which is important in maintaining the performance of the RO system. The need for consistent and proper maintenance, it is hoped that the RO system can continue to function effectively to support ship operations without obstacles.

Abstract

The air conditioning system in a room monitors the regulation of humidity and air temperature, with a focus on providing optimal levels of comfort for the ship's crew, thereby reducing fatigue and helping to improve fitness. Problems can arise and the vessel can be disrupted if maintenance schedules are not followed. Based on the researcher's experience during sea practice for 12 months on an MV ship. Federal Oak. When the ship entered summer and entered Mexico, the condenser leaked in the air conditioning engine, which disturbed the comfort of the ship's crew while working. This research aims to identify the causes, consequences, and solutions for condenser leaks in air conditioning systems. This research uses a qualitative description approach that uses Fishbone data analysis to organize and identify the factors that cause certain effects, then separate the root causes of the problem. This study found that deposits in the condenser pipe and air in the condenser are the causes of AC machine condenser leaks, dirty cooling water results in a decrease in the amount of freon that is condensed, and lack of maintenance and supervision will worsen the condition of the components. The impact of a condenser leak in an air conditioning machine is that room temperature cannot be reached because the freon, which should be converted into a liquid when it enters the condenser, actually experiences a shortage due to a leak that occurs in the condenser and a decrease in engine performance. Efforts to overcome leaks in air conditioning machine condensers include using a brush to clean dirt stuck to the capillary pipes and spraying water into the condenser pipes. Turn off the air conditioning machine and weld pipe joints that are leaking. Clean the condenser tube using a long iron. Carry out maintenance in accordance with the Plan Maintenance System.

Abstract

The centrifugal pump is one of the auxiliary machines at PDAM Rembang, functioning to fill water into the treatment tank/reservoir. There are distribution issues in PDAM Rembang due to interruptions in water distribution to customers, causing customer discomfort. The methods used include data collection, observation, interviews, and literature review. The interview method involved the author questioning the relevant mechanical personnel. Broadly, the author used a qualitative descriptive approach to compile this scientific paper. The results of this research show that the main causes of the pump issues are the lack of pressure in the centrifugal pump due to a blocked inlet valve by mud crusts and leaks in the pipe installation, suction pipe packing, and pump filter. The solution is to equip the pump with filters made of iron or steel coated with stainless steel or brass to prevent corrosion and to block debris and solid substances. A decrease in water flow rate is caused by an increase in pump temperature, blockages in the impeller from soft or solid debris, which leads to impeller imbalance and wear, resulting in the pump not operating optimally. The solution is to replace the damaged impeller and any leaking or corroded pipes. Additionally, there is the issue of wooden branches and metal plates from the river being sucked into the pump, causing impeller wear, resulting in pump instability and pressure drops below the standard 2.0 bar on the pump’s manometer. The solution is for technicians to conduct regular cleaning, inspections, and maintenance every three weeks, ensuring the filter is intact without holes or damage, so debris can be effectively filtered out.

Abstract

A Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP) is a propeller that can adjust its pitch as needed for forward or reverse movement through a hydraulic oil system. The condition of components within the CPP system greatly affects propeller performance; damage to a single component can disrupt operation, necessitating regular maintenance. This study uses a combined SHEL and USG method to analyze the factors causing the propeller to not function optimally, the impact, and mitigation efforts. The study was conducted on the MT. Keoje Kirin vessel (August 31, 2016 – October 23, 2017) and identified four main factors causing the issues: malfunctioning Oil Distribution Box (ODB), a tight operational schedule, lack of crew skills, and suboptimal implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Recommended solutions include scheduled PMS maintenance, ODB repairs, laboratory testing of hydraulic fluid quality, crew training before boarding, and the development and implementation of appropriate SOPs.
