Focus and Scope Aljabar: Jurnal Ilmuan Pendidikan, Matematika, dan Kebumian adalah jurnal ilmiah yang berfokus pada publikasi artikel penelitian, kajian teoretis, dan studi empiris di bidang pendidikan, matematika, dan ilmu kebumian. Abstract

Environmental pollution, particularly river pollution caused by household waste, has become a major issue in densely populated residential areas. This condition is also found in RW 009 Pejaten Timur, where environmental quality has declined due to population growth, increasing domestic activities, and improper waste management practices. This study aims to examine community perceptions of environmental pollution in RW 009 Pejaten Timur, including the level of public knowledge, attitudes, and the factors influencing their perceptions of environmental conditions. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation, and analyzed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing techniques. The findings indicate that the community is aware of the deterioration in environmental quality, particularly river pollution resulting from household waste and the practice of disposing of garbage into the river. However, this awareness has not been fully translated into environmentally responsible behavior due to practical considerations and the limited availability of household organic waste management facilities. Furthermore, the implementation of a biopore program is perceived as a promising initiative to reduce environmental pollution, provided that it is supported by active community participation. The study implies that improving environmental awareness should be accompanied by continuous environmental education, adequate waste management facilities, and collaboration among the community, local authorities, and government to achieve sustainable environmental management.

Abstract

Rice fields play an essential role in supporting food security and environmental sustainability. This study aims to describe the ecological conditions of rice field areas in Ciamis Regency, analyze the impact of farmers' activities on the paddy field environment, and identify efforts to maintain agricultural ecosystem balance. A qualitative approach with a descriptive method was employed. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving farmers in the study area and analyzed descriptively to explain the relationship between agricultural activities and environmental conditions. The findings reveal that farmers' activities significantly influence the sustainability of rice field ecosystems. Soil management, irrigation, fertilization, and pest control are key factors affecting agricultural environmental quality. Soil fertility and water availability support rice growth, whereas climate variability and pest attacks remain major challenges. Excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides contributes to soil degradation, water pollution, and biodiversity loss. Conversely, farmers' environmental awareness and agricultural extension programs encourage the adoption of more sustainable farming practices. The study concludes that agricultural success depends not only on production factors but also on farmers' ability to preserve ecological balance. Therefore, strengthening agroecological principles and environmentally friendly farming practices is essential to support sustainable agriculture, environmental conservation, and long-term productivity in Ciamis Regency.

Abstract

This study was conducted to examine parents’ perceptions regarding the influence of mathematics tutoring on their children’s academic performance. The research was motivated by the common perception that mathematics is a challenging subject, leading many students to face difficulties in understanding concepts and solving mathematical problems. As a result, parents often enroll their children in mathematics tutoring programs to enhance their academic achievement. This study applied a descriptive qualitative method. The participants were eight parents whose children participated in mathematics tutoring. Data were gathered through interviews, observations, and documentation. The collected data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman framework, including data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results indicated that mathematics tutoring contributed positively to students’ academic achievement. Prior to attending tutoring sessions, many students struggled with understanding mathematical concepts, demonstrated low self-confidence, and achieved unsatisfactory academic results. Following their participation in tutoring programs, students showed improvements in mathematics achievement, learning motivation, self-confidence, and study habits. Although some challenges were encountered, such as fatigue, financial costs, and scheduling conflicts, parents generally believed that the benefits outweighed these difficulties. Therefore, mathematics tutoring can be considered an effective supplementary educational support that helps improve students’ academic performance.

Abstract

Photosynthesis is one of the fundamental concepts in science education that students need to understand because it is closely related to food production and oxygen supply for life on Earth. This study aimed to analyze students' understanding of the basic concepts of photosynthesis and identify the misconceptions they still possess. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach using interviews with five students based on ten questions related to photosynthesis. The collected data were analyzed descriptively according to the accuracy of students' responses for each indicator. The results showed that most students had understood the basic concepts of photosynthesis, particularly its definition, the primary organ where photosynthesis occurs, the role of chlorophyll, the time when photosynthesis takes place, and its importance for life. However, several misconceptions were identified regarding the gases involved in photosynthesis, the main products of the process, the source of energy used, and the plant organ responsible for water absorption. These findings indicate that photosynthesis instruction should be strengthened through contextual learning, inquiry-based approaches, simple laboratory activities, and the use of engaging instructional media to improve students' conceptual understanding and reduce misconceptions.
