Abstract

Science learning in junior secondary schools continues to face challenges in fostering students’ scientific literacy, particularly in rural and coastal areas rich in environmental potentials but under-utilised as learning resources. This study aims to develop a science learning model based on coastal environments tailored to the local context of Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) Legokjawa, Cimerak Subdistrict, Pangandaran Regency, and to analyse its effect on students’ scientific literacy. The research employed a Research & Development (R&D) approach encompassing needs analysis, model design, expert validation, limited trial, and final revision. The subjects were grade VIII students of MTs Legokjawa in the 2025/2026 academic year. Instruments included a scientific literacy test, student activity observation sheet, and student questionnaire. The results indicate that the developed model is feasible (average expert validation score 88.5 %) and significantly increased students’ scientific literacy by 24.6 %. These findings suggest that coastal-based contextual learning enhances conceptual understanding, scientific process skills, and environmental awareness among students. The implications for practice include contextual learning implementation in coastal schools and reinforcement of the Merdeka Belajar curriculum.

Abstract

This study aims to identify effective Arabic language learning strategies for Generation Z through a combination of traditional methods and the use of social media. The approach of this research is qualitative with literature studies, classroom observations, and semi-structured interviews with Arabic language educators. The results show that the integration of social media such as TikTok, Instagram, and other digital platforms can improve motivation, vocabulary mastery, speaking and writing skills, and student engagement when combined with the foundation of traditional methods such as formal grammar and oral exercises in physical classrooms. The research also shows challenges in the form of inequality of access to technology and the need for adequate training of educators. The implication of this study is the importance of a Blended Learning learning model that combines the power of face-to-face interaction and social media as a pedagogical tool to respond to the unique characteristics of Generation Z in Arabic language learning.

Abstract

Educational evaluation is a systematic process of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting information to assess the achievement of educational goals and improve the learning process and management of educational units. This article examines the concept of educational evaluation, its urgency in quality governance, and its effectiveness in driving improvements in educational quality. The discussion emphasizes the differences between evaluation and measurement and assessment, the various approaches (formative–summative, internal–external), and the requirements for evaluation to have a real impact: improvement-oriented, based on valid data, stakeholder involvement, and planned follow-up. The article also examines implementation challenges such as bias, achievement reductionism, administrative burden, and a "just report" culture. In conclusion, evaluation is effective when positioned as an organizational learning instrument that guides decisions, not merely an accountability ritual.

Abstract

Science learning at the Islamic Junior High School (Madrasah Tsanawiyah) level requires meaningful connections between scientific concepts and real-life phenomena familiar to students. One relevant contextual learning resource is the use of local food materials, such as guava (Psidium guajava), which is rich in vitamin C. This study aims to analyze the effect of science learning based on scientific literacy through the study of vitamin C content in guava on students’ understanding of biological system concepts, particularly the role of nutrients in collagen formation, among ninth-grade students of MTs YPK Cijulang, Pangandaran Regency. The research employed a quasi-experimental method with a one-group pretest–posttest design. The research subjects were ninth-grade students who participated in science learning using contextual teaching materials based on local food resources. Research instruments included a conceptual understanding test and student activity observation sheets. The results showed an improvement in students’ conceptual understanding after the implementation of contextual learning, as indicated by higher posttest scores compared to pretest scores. Science learning that integrates nutrition concepts, vitamins, and human biological systems using guava as a study object effectively enhanced student engagement and scientific literacy. Therefore, the use of local context in science learning has the potential to improve learning quality and conceptual understanding of ninth-grade MTs students.

Abstract

This article aims to describe students' critical thinking processes in differentiated learning, examined through learning styles using a phenomenological approach. The focus of this study is on the experiences of students with visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learning styles when engaging in differentiated learning activities. The research findings indicate that critical thinking develops through different cognitive pathways according to learning preferences. Visual learners tend to more easily build critical reasoning through visual representations such as diagrams or concept maps. Auditory learners strengthen critical thinking through discussions and reflective dialogues, while kinesthetic learners develop critical thinking through hands-on experiences and observation. These findings suggest that differentiation in learning can function as a cognitive bridge, providing all students access to develop critical thinking through different approaches, with a learning design that takes into account multi-representations, dialogue, and experience-based activities.
