Abstract

This study examines the potential role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in mitigating asymmetric information in Profit-Loss Sharing (PLS) financing models within Islamic banking. Although PLS contracts such as mudarabah and musharakah embody the core Islamic finance principle of risk-sharing, their practical implementation remains limited due to moral hazard and adverse selection problems arising from information asymmetry between banks and entrepreneurs. This research aims to explore how AI technologies can enhance transparency, monitoring, and decision-making processes to strengthen the viability of PLS financing in Islamic banking. The study employs a systematic library research approach by reviewing 86 scholarly articles indexed in Scopus related to Islamic finance, asymmetric information, and AI applications in financial services. The analysis synthesizes existing theoretical and empirical insights to develop a conceptual framework illustrating how AI technologies, such as machine learning, Internet of Things (IoT) systems, and natural language processing (NLP), can support both pre-financing and post-financing processes in PLS contracts. The findings indicate that AI technologies can significantly reduce asymmetric information in PLS financing. Machine learning enhances borrower assessment and credit profiling, IoT enables real-time monitoring of financed business performance, and NLP facilitates financial reporting analysis and sharia compliance verification. These tools improve transparency, strengthen risk identification, and reduce the likelihood of adverse selection and moral hazard, thereby supporting a more sustainable and efficient Islamic banking model. This study is limited to conceptual and literature-based analysis and does not include empirical testing of AI applications in Islamic banking operations. Future research should conduct empirical studies and case-based investigations to validate the proposed framework and examine practical implementation challenges. This study contributes by integrating AI technology perspectives with Islamic finance principles to propose a conceptual framework for strengthening PLS financing. It offers new insights into how digital innovation can support the sustainability and competitiveness of Islamic banking.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of a multiparty cooperative model in developing pesantren-based halal tourism and its contribution to strengthening the local sharia economic ecosystem in Banyumas Regency, Central Java, Indonesia. This research employs a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and document analysis involving pesantren leaders, cooperative managers, local communities, and tourism stakeholders. The data were analyzed using an interactive model, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, supported by triangulation techniques to ensure validity and reliability. The findings reveal that pesantren institutions play a strategic role as socio-religious and economic hubs in supporting halal tourism development. However, the absence of an integrated institutional framework limits the optimization of economic benefits. The study proposes a multiparty cooperative model that integrates pesantren, communities, government, and business actors. This model enhances coordination, promotes equitable resource distribution, and strengthens sectors such as halal culinary, religious tourism, and creative industries, contributing significantly to local economic resilience. This study is limited to a specific regional context, which may affect generalizability. However, it provides important implications for policymakers and practitioners in designing inclusive, community-based halal tourism strategies rooted in Islamic economic principles. This research offers a novel integrative model linking pesantren institutions, cooperative economics, and halal tourism within a unified framework. It contributes to the literature by demonstrating how Islamic social institutions can be operationalized to strengthen sustainable local sharia economies.

Abstract

This study examines the transformation of digital waqf and its role in empowering micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) within the Islamic economics framework, identifying dominant thematic clusters, integration models, and structural barriers shaping digital waqf development during 2020–2025. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) employing the PRISMA 2020 protocol was conducted across Scopus, Google Scholar, and Sinta databases. Structured Boolean searches yielded 487 initial records, of which 57 peer-reviewed articles met all inclusion criteria. Thematic analysis followed Braun and Clarke's (2006) framework, complemented by bibliometric mapping using VOSviewer. Four thematic clusters were identified: digital waqf and SDGs, innovative instruments (CWLS and CWLD), Islamic fintech integration, and productive waqf-based MSME empowerment. The most effective integration model combines Cash Waqf Linked Deposit (CWLD), Shariah crowdfunding, blockchain infrastructure, and holistic MSME mentoring. Implementation is constrained by five structural challenges: regulatory gaps, low Nazhir digital capacity, insufficient public waqf literacy, unequal technological infrastructure, and unresolved Shariah-technology harmonization. This study provides important implications for both theory and practice in Islamic economics. Theoretically, it advances the integration of digital waqf, Islamic fintech, and MSME empowerment within a unified analytical framework, contributing to the development of Islamic Social Finance 2.0 and the operationalization of maqāṣid al-sharī'ah in the digital era. Practically, the findings offer strategic guidance for policymakers, Islamic financial institutions, and nazhir organizations to strengthen regulatory frameworks, enhance digital capacity, and expand inclusive financing mechanisms for MSMEs through scalable digital waqf models. Additionally, this study highlights the need for multi-stakeholder collaboration to overcome structural barriers and accelerate the transformation of waqf into a sustainable instrument for socio-economic development. This study delivers the most comprehensive English-language SLR on digital waqf and MSME empowerment in the Indonesian context, introducing the original Digital Waqf–Fintech–MSME Empowerment Nexus model.

Abstract

This paper examines the role of Islamic education within the Darud Da’wah wal-Irsyad (DDI) network in Eastern Indonesia as a medium for developing social immunity through religious authority and pedagogical practices. The study aims to explore how Islamic education within the DDI network promotes moderate religious understanding, how the authority of teachers and religious scholars regulates religious discourse, and how institutional and cultural mechanisms within Islamic education contribute to building non-radical communities. This research employs a qualitative approach using qualitative content analysis. Data were collected through the examination of educational documents, including curricula and institutional materials, as well as semi-structured interviews with key educational actors such as institutional leaders, teachers, and alumni. The analysis focuses on identifying value orientations, normative assumptions, and social practices that shape moderate religious perspectives. The findings reveal that Islamic education within the DDI network functions as an effective social infrastructure for cultivating social immunity against radicalism. The authority of teachers and religious scholars grounded in scholarly legitimacy and cultural influence plays a central role in translating moderate Islamic values into curricula, daily educational practices, and community-based religious outreach. The study concludes that Islamic educational institutions and religious organizations hold strategic importance in strengthening social resilience and promoting preventive approaches to radicalism that prioritize community development rather than security-centered responses. The originality of this study lies in its conceptualization of Islamic education as a form of “social immunity,” highlighting how religious authority, institutional culture, and pedagogical practices interact to create community-based resilience against radical ideologies, particularly within the educational network of DDI in Eastern Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the character education values embedded in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) textbooks used at the Madrasah Tsanawiyah level, focusing on how these values are represented across different subject areas. This research employs a qualitative approach with a library research design. The primary method used is content analysis to systematically examine the textual content of officially published PAI textbooks by the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. The analysis covers four subjects: Al-Qur’an Hadith, Aqidah Akhlak, Fiqh, and Islamic Cultural History (SKI), particularly for Grade 8. The findings reveal that the textbooks incorporate five core character values promoted in the Strengthening Character Education (PPK) program: religious, nationalist, independent, mutual cooperation, and integrity. Among these, religious values are the most dominant and consistently emphasized across all subjects, particularly in relation to faith, worship, and moral behavior. However, other values such as nationalism and independence are not evenly distributed and tend to receive less emphasis in certain subjects. This study is limited to the analysis of Grade 8 PAI textbooks and does not include empirical validation through classroom implementation or student outcomes. Nevertheless, the findings provide important implications for curriculum developers and educators to ensure a more balanced integration of character values across all subjects in Islamic education. This study offers originality by specifically examining the integration of character education values across multiple PAI subject areas within Madrasah Tsanawiyah textbooks, which has not been extensively explored in previous research. It contributes to the development of more systematic and comprehensive character education in Islamic educational contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the sociological role of Amanah (trustworthiness) as a spiritual-social foundation in Islamic SMEs and how it bridges the gap between formal management strategies, product quality, and consumer loyalty. It specifically investigates the potential paradox where religious ethics might interact unpredictably with modern management practices. A quantitative approach was employed utilizing Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) through SmartPLS 4.0. Data were gathered via a structured survey involving 313 respondents, comprising active consumers and business practitioners of Islamic SMEs in Makassar, Indonesia. The results reveal that while management strategy and product quality significantly and positively influence loyalty, a striking paradox emerges: Amanah shows a significant negative moderation effect on the relationship between management strategy and consumer loyalty. This suggests that over-reliance on formal management may diminish the organic trust-building power of religious ethics. However, Amanah remains a full mediator that converts product quality into long-term loyalty. The findings suggest that "success" in Islamic business is not a simple linear integration of modern and traditional values. While formal management is essential, the traditional-religious value of Amanah constitutes a distinct form of social capital that can be stifled by excessive formalization. Practitioners must balance professional systems with authentic spiritual integrity to stabilize market relations. This study contributes to Islamic economic literature by empirically uncovering the "tension" between religious integrity and formal business strategy. It offers a new integrative framework that challenges the assumption that religious ethics and modern management always work in perfect harmony.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a comprehensive model of Islamic education grounded in Digital-Theological Consciousness that addresses the ontological transformation of Muslim learners who inhabit digital culture as Homo Digitalis. The research responds to a significant gap in the literature: while digital Islamic education studies have proliferated, none has systematically integrated the philosophical concept of Homo Digitalis with tawhid-based theology into a coherent educational model. A qualitative library research design was employed, drawing on systematic analysis of primary and secondary sources in Islamic educational philosophy, digital theology, and philosophical anthropology. Sources were selected from peer-reviewed journals indexed in Scopus, Web of Science, and Sinta (2020–2025), supplemented by seminal theoretical works from Capurro (2017), Kultaieva (2020), and Phillips et al. (2019). Data were analyzed using an integrative-interpretive approach. The study identifies three foundational gaps in existing scholarship: the absence of Islamic digital theology as a field, the non-integration of Homo Digitalis into Islamic anthropological-educational discourse, and the operational limitation of tawhid-based models in addressing digital consciousness. Based on these gaps, the study proposes the DTC Model comprising five interrelated pillars: Tawhidic Ontological Grounding, Digital Fitrah Literacy, Khalifah-Oriented Digital Ethics, Integrative Epistemology of Revelation and Reason, and Transformative Pedagogical Practice. The model offers a theoretically rigorous and practically applicable framework for Islamic educational institutions navigating digital transformation. Limitations include the conceptual-library nature of the study, which requires empirical validation through subsequent field research in Indonesian madrasah and pesantren contexts. This article introduces Digital-Theological Consciousness as a new construct in Islamic educational theory, offering the first systematic integration of Homo Digitalis philosophy with tawhidic epistemology in educational modelling. The study contributes both to Islamic educational philosophy and to the broader global discourse on religion and digital culture.
UNDERAGE MARRIAGE AND ITS SOCIO-RELIGIOUS IMPACTS: A MAQĀṢID AL-SYARI‘AH CASE STUDY OF A SINGLE HOUSEHOLD IN WANAJAYA VILLAGE, BEKASI Bariah, Oyoh; Hermawan, Iwan; Farida, Nur Aini; Afifah, Faras; Sayuti, Ikhsan

Abstract

This study analyzes underage marriage in a single household in Wanajaya Village, Cibitung, Bekasi, through the lens of Maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah (the higher objectives of Islamic law). It aims to identify the socio-religious factors driving early marriage, assess its impacts on the individuals and family, and evaluate alignment between local practices and the five core Maqāṣid protections: religion, life, intellect, lineage, and wealth. A qualitative single-case study design was employed. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, non-participant observation, and document review involving 6 participants from one household (underage married woman, her parents, husband, and sibling) and one religious leader in Wanajaya Village. Thematic analysis was guided by the Maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah framework. The underage marriage was conducted without court dispensation, facilitated by an unofficial payment to a KUA intermediary. Primary drivers included economic hardship, arranged matchmaking, and low parental education. The impacts – reproductive health concerns, psychological distress, educational truncation, economic vulnerability, and marital instability – violated four of the five Maqāṣid protections (life, intellect, lineage, wealth). The religious leader acknowledged that despite religious justifications, early marriage often leads to greater harm. The study is limited to a single household plus one religious leader, and is not statistically generalizable. Self-reported data may contain bias. Findings offer analytical insights into how procedural circumventions and narrow definitions of readiness contradict higher aims of Islamic law. Unlike prior quantitative or legal analyses, this study combines in-depth household-level fieldwork with a normative Maqāṣid-based critique, including the perspective of a village religious leader, revealing micro-level mechanisms and rationales that sustain underage marriage.

Abstract

This study aims to explore and deeply analyze the intellectual construction of A. Malik Fadjar regarding the modernization of the madrasah as an effort toward inclusive and progressive Islamic educational reconstruction in Indonesia. Specifically, the study identifies his strategic steps in eliminating the intellectual dichotomy and reforming institutional management in response to the challenges of globalization. This study is a qualitative research employing a library research design with a focus on biographical and intellectual study (studi tokoh). Since the primary object of investigation is the intellectual thought of A. Malik Fadjar regarding the modernization of the madrasah, the approach utilized is the social history of Islamic educational thinking. This approach was selected because the researcher intends not only to dissect the texts literally but also to explore the dialectic between the figure's thoughts and the surrounding social, political, and cultural contexts during the inception of those ideas. The results demonstrate that madrasah modernization, from A. Malik Fadjar's perspective, is a paradigmatic transformation rooted in the concept of Tawhid as the convergence point for integrating science (dhikr) and technology (fikr). He positioned the madrasah no longer as a "second-class institution" but as a competitive general school with a distinctive Islamic character. This transformation is realized through three primary policies: accommodating the autonomous aspirations of the Ummah, strengthening the mastery of science and civic skills, and responding to the demands of the information era through professional management. Despite critiques regarding his managerial style which relied heavily on trust his vision proved capable of bridging pesantren traditions with the demands of Western modernity. Practically, this research emphasizes the importance of shifting madrasah management patterns from traditional-conventional models toward professional and adaptive governance that meets local and global labor market needs. These findings provide a foundation for madrasah administrators to maintain religious identity (tafaqquh fiddin) while continuously innovating through integrative curricula. The originality of this study lies in its analytical focus, which shifts the discourse on A. Malik Fadjar’s thought from a general-philosophical level to specific operational steps within the context of madrasah reconstruction in Indonesia. This research offers a new paradigm for developing the madrasah as an institution that is intellectually competitive while remaining steadfast in its foundation of Islamic morality,

Abstract

This study aims to map the scientific landscape of halal certification research and examine its publication development, thematic focus, and key contributors in the global halal literature. A bibliometric approach was used, drawing on Scopus-indexed journal articles retrieved using the keywords “halal certification” and “halal product certification.” After screening and removing duplicates, 142 relevant articles published between 2010 and 2025 were analyzed using the Bibliometrix R-package through the Biblioshiny interface. The results indicate rapid growth in research in this field, with an average annual growth rate of 19.24%, highlighting Indonesia and Malaysia as the most dominant contributors. The Journal of Islamic Marketing emerged as the most influential source, while author productivity remains concentrated among a small number of scholars. The novelty of this study lies in providing one of the earliest comprehensive bibliometric mappings of halal certification, using Scopus data and the Biblioshiny visualization tool. Future research should integrate additional databases and explore emerging themes, such as digital halal governance and consumer protection, to strengthen halal certification studies. This study presents the most extensive bibliometric review of halal certification research in the global halal literature, delivering the first dedicated Scopus-based mapping of publication trends, thematic evolution, and leading contributors while introducing a novel Halal Certification Research Landscape Framework.
