Abstract

The objective-approach evaluation aimed to audit the school effectiveness on the five TQM components of services to students, physical environment and resources, human resource, processes and product(s). The study involved a quantitative method using a standard audit checklist (Sallis, 1998:138). A few modifications were made by dropping few items and grouping the indicators into the five total quality components. The checklist was used in two ways, first, through subjective approach involving the head teacher and 45 sample teachers. Second, by the researchers own objective quantitative observation. The result of the descriptive analysis shows differences in perception rating. The mean average of 3.0+ obtained for the five components items reveals an average perception. The conclusion here is that the five components mean average per component items is within the average effectiveness with slight variation

Abstract

This research was aimed at developing an aid for teaching Braille letters by using Atmega 8535 microcontroller and voice chip aP89341 and the combination of Push Button Switch into the combination of Braille letters. The research method employed was Research and Development with combinations of vowels-consonants  and punctuations of Braille  letters  in  Bahasa  Indonesia processed  into voices  by a  microcontroller  and  a  voice  chip.  This aid  was validated  by five  teachers in the Yaketunis School for  the Blind  to  test  its feasibility  as a teaching aid.  The aid was tested on five blind subjects. The performance of the system showed that the aid could produce voicing for 254 combinations of Braille letters consisting of the introduction on the use of the aid, combination of Braille numbers from 0 to 99, combinations of Braille letters from a to z, combinations of Braille vowels and consonants from ba-bi-bu-be-bo to za-zi-zu-ze-zo and their combinations, combinations of Braille punctuations and several additional voicings. The experts'  validations were: effectiveness = 81%, user friendliness = 78%, consistency = 78%, media organisation = 80%, and  significance  = 70%.  The percentage of the feasibility test was 77%, categorized as veryfeasible.   Keywords: braille teaching aids, push button, voicing, voice chip

Abstract

This study aimed at: (1) investigating the types of translation errors in abstracts, (2) ascertaining the dominant type, and (3) contextualizing the use of the dominant type. This study was classified as descriptive qualitative research. The data were obtained from the thesis abstracts of Educational Administration students of the Post Graduate School of State of the University of Medan. The data were analyzed by classifying them into two types of errors, namely grammatical errors and content errors. The proportion of each type was converted into percentages. The results of this study were as follows: (1) in the grammatical error type, the use of verb group took 58%, and (2) in the content error type, presentation of different senses took 38%. The dominant type of grammatical errors was  caused by the confusion of verb groups in dealing with the English grammar systems. The dominant type of content errors was caused by the failure in choosing appropriate words. This is because of the lack of vocabulary mastery

Abstract

This study aims to design implementation strategies of DCT in the Basic Inorganic Chemistry course, develop an appropriate course to increase students’ active participation, and develop an evaluation system capable of providing an integrated assessment (both the learning process and outcomes) in the course. This study was conducted in two cycles for one semester during the academic year of 2008/2009. The implementation applied the principles of classroom action research consisting of four stages, i.e. planning, action implementation, observation, and reflection. The data were analyzed by grouping them into categories. The findings were as follows. Qualitatively, the classroom observations showed an increasing active participation of students, both in making the DCT and in conducting discussions in English. Quantitatively, the results of the observations on the learning activities showed an average value of 4 (scale 1-5) for several aspects of DCT.
