Abstract

Coffee is the most important cash crop commodity to the Ethiopian economy. About 15 million peoples have been directly or indirectly deriving their livelihoods from coffee product. The coffee marketing chain in Ethiopia is weak in terms of linkages with industry, agro processing and value-addition downstream of farms, provision of farm inputs upstream, and poor post-harvest operations, storage, distribution and logistics. This has resulted in poor performance of the sector mainly on the targets of export earnings that the government has planned to attain. This study aims at examining the basic factors that determine coffee marketing on growers and suppliers in Keffa Zone Gimbo woreda. Purposive and two stage random sampling technique were used and the data was collected from 78 coffee producers and supplier. The data collection tools used for the study were interview and observation on the determinants of coffee marketing in the coffee producers as well as coffee suppliers in the study area. Tobit regression was used to identify the main determinants of coffee marketing and to identify the extent of each factor on coffee producer and supplier. The result indicates expansion of illegal trade was significantly hinder the coffee market participation and reduce the amount of coffee supplied to the market. On the other hand access to market, training access, transportation access, farming experience and land size allotted to coffee production was found positive and significant. In addition restricted time schedule to buy and sell coffee product was also discourage the coffee marketing. Restricted time schedule sometimes resulted in oversupply of coffee product and low market price. Therefore, all responsible bodies like federal and regional government, kaffa zone, traders, investors, ECX, NGOs etc. should work together in order to make the society beneficiary from marketing of coffee.

Abstract

The aim of this paper was to assess the role played by corporate technological capabilities on firm performance. The ability of a firm to integrate information technology in its operations has been known to be integral in driving organizational success by promoting efficiency and effectiveness. The prevailing underperformance of the listed firms in Kenya raises the question on whether these firms have integrated adequate technology and whether they have what it takes to effectively incorporate technology in their operations, hence the subject of this study. Through a descriptive and exploratory research design, the study surveyed 240 senior management personnel drawn from the 64 listed firms using a structured questionnaire. The data was analysed using SPSS and Amos software for descriptive statistics and structural equation modelling respectively. The findings revealed that technological capabilities had a significant influence on the performance of firms listed at the NSE (R2 = .096; β = 0.150; P=0.0001<0.05). It was concluded that through adequate ICT infrastructure, ICT human skills and the commitment to integrate and accept use of ICT, the listed firms would strengthen their operational efficiency thus record superior performance.

Abstract

Inventory visibility is the ability of an organization to streamline its inventory tracking methods so as to ensure the right amount inventory is stocked based on the customers’ needs and the supply rates of the suppliers. Having a high degree of inventory visibility is increasingly seen as a competitive advantage in modern supply chain management, as it allows for greater agility and responsiveness to market changes. One of the compelling issues that have been facing the manufacturing industry in Kenya is the inability to meet customer demands and high waiting times. Previous literature has shown that with a visible inventory, manufacturing firms could enhance their delivery effectiveness and significantly reduce waiting time. This however lacks empirical backing from a Kenyan perspective, hence the subject of the study. The study was anchored on the transaction cost theory. Descriptive research design was adopted, and the large manufacturing firms in Kenya were targeted. A sample of 160 firms was selected. Through a structured questionnaire, primary data was collected from the heads of supply chain in the 160 companies. The findings revealed that inventory visibility is an instrumental determinant of the performance of the manufacturing industry in Kenya. It was established that inventory visibility enabled manufacturing companies to have real-time or near-real-time information about the quantity, location, and status of its products or goods throughout the supply chain. This allowed for accurate tracking and management of inventory levels, which is crucial for efficient operations and customer satisfaction.

Abstract

In the contemporary global landscape, organizations have transitioned from conventional approaches to communication towards developing comprehensive communication strategies that center around employee motivation and engagement. This shift emphasizes the pivotal role of strategic internal communication, a relatively nascent but increasingly vital subject of study and application in the business world. The contemporary corporate environment observes a shift in employee roles, with employees increasingly undertaking responsibilities traditionally associated with public relations. Expectations of roles are pivotal in comprehending this transformation in PR practice, as expectations and norms greatly influence communication behavior and, consequently, organizational performance. Within this context, a content analysis of secondary data was done for the interpretation of the data. This allowed for the evaluation of existing knowledge for the purpose of relevance, consistency, replication and refutation. The paper argues that internal communication practices within paramilitary agencies, such as the Nigeria Customs Service, diverge from conventional corporate organizational models. This divergence is particularly pronounced given the agency's multifaceted role in revenue generation, the suppression of smuggling, trade facilitation, and other functions. The paper concludes that employee participation and job satisfaction played the mediating role in the relation between internal communication and job performance of the employees.

Abstract

This scholarly discourse seeks to provide a comprehensive analysis of the Western Development Plan that was executed in British West Africa during the post-colonial era. Academics have examined the portrayal of the British colonial government from different viewpoints and perspectives. Distinguished African academics have thoroughly examined this topic from an angle of self-interest, whereas highly regarded European scholars have analysed it from the standpoint of imperialism. The connections and affiliations between African states and their European counterparts have had negative consequences for their economic sustainability and cultural cohesion. Therefore, it is indisputable that the economies of post-colonial Africa are primarily shaped by the enduring impacts of their colonial past. The colonial economies were tightly interconnected with the economic systems of their respective metropolitan powers via a range of measures, such as currency manipulation, trade restrictions, and infrastructure expansion. This article provides a thorough review of the development plans created after the attainment of Nigeria's independence with the aim of reporting their effects on the economy and growth of West Africa.

Abstract

This article discusses zakat management in Aljazair, focusing on changes in zakat management plans, the history of Zakat, and mechanisms for collecting and distributing zakat funds. Aljazair is facing changes in zakat management with plans to establish a National Zakat Council, in response to public dissatisfaction with the existing system. The history of Zakat in Aljazair reflects its critical role before the colonial era, but experienced significant decline during that period. Zakat management in Aljazair involves Kotak Zakat as a voluntary organization with strategic partnerships, innovation in utilizing Zakat, and the use of technology to increase efficiency and transparency. The distribution of zakat funds involves an application process from mosque units, which the Regional Council supervises. Partnerships with financial institutions such as Bank Al-Barakah Aljazair create innovative solutions such as the Zakat Investment Box. Through an organized approach and strategic partnerships, Zakat management in Aljazair is committed to utilizing Zakat for social welfare. In the management of Zakat and waqf in Aljazair, it can be concluded that there are 48 directorates of religious affairs and waqf located in each of the 48 provinces in Aljazair. They are considered a scaled-down version of the ministries of religious affairs and endowments, where they have small offices and departments representing specific tasks assigned by the ministry. They oversee the management of zakat funds, waqf assets, Hajj and Umrah affairs and other religious affairs in each of the country's 48 provinces. Each religious and waqf directorate has a separate department dedicated to waqf asset collection, dispute management, and investment. All religious and waqf directorates are directly related to the central directorate in the capital and the ministry of religion and waqf.
