Abstract

As the primary foundation of Islamic teachings, the concept of tawadhu' (humility) plays a significant role in shaping social ethics and human character. In the modern era, characterized by the growing influence of hedonistic culture a lifestyle oriented toward material pleasure, luxury, and self-image the value of tawadhu' has become increasingly essential as a moral and spiritual counterbalance. Accordingly, this study addresses the question of how the values of tawadhu' in the Qur'an can be internalized as a solution to the influence of hedonistic culture on both personal and social life. The study aims to examine the meaning of tawadhu' in the Qur'an and to explain its role as a fundamental virtue capable of mitigating the negative impacts of hedonism. This research employs a thematic Qur'anic exegesis (tafsir maudhu'i) approach using library research methods. The analysis focuses on Qur'anic verses related to tawadhu', namely Q.S. Al-Isra' (17:24, 17:37), Al-Furqan (25:63), Ash-Shu'ara' (26:215), and Al-Hijr (15:88), with primary reference to Al-Qur'an dan Tafsirnya published by the Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs. The findings reveal that tawadhu' is not merely a theological value but also serves as a foundation of social ethics that fosters simplicity, empathy, and self-restraint in response to hedonistic culture. The internalization of tawadhu' contributes to the development of balanced character grounded in Qur'anic values. This study recommends strengthening the internalization of tawadhu' through education, family, and religious outreach (da'wah), while encouraging future field-based research to examine its practical implementation in society.

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has transformed human decision-making through automated systems, but its rapid development has also generated ethical challenges, including algorithmic bias, limited transparency, weakened accountability, and the erosion of moral agency. Contemporary AI ethics is predominantly grounded in secular–humanistic frameworks, which often lack a comprehensive spiritual and metaphysical foundation. This study aims to examine the Qur’anic concept of Ulū al-Albāb as a normative ethical framework that can enrich contemporary AI ethics. Employing qualitative library research with a thematic approach, the study analyzes Qur’anic verses concerning Ulū al-Albāb through the exegetical perspectives of Ibn Kathīr, al-Marāghī, Ibn ‘Āshūr, Fakhr al-Dīn al-Rāzī, and M. Quraish Shihab. The findings identify five interrelated ethical values embodied by Ulū al-Albāb: intellectual purity (lubb), reflective thinking, ethical discernment (ḥikmah), spiritual consciousness (taqwā), and commitment to the essence of truth. These values provide a normative ethical framework that reinforces human moral responsibility rather than functioning as technical algorithms in AI systems. The study concludes that Ulū al-Albāb offers a meaningful ethical bridge between Islamic intellectual tradition and technological innovation. It is recommended that future AI governance and ethical policy frameworks incorporate spiritually grounded ethical values alongside technical and regulatory approaches to promote more responsible and human-centered AI development.

Abstract

The existence of the internet makes it easy for every individual to find a mate not necessarily face-to-face, but it creates problems characterized by falsification of personal identity, which then has an impact on the misuse of identity to commit crimes. This study aims to reveal the Qur'anic view of the phenomenon of online ta'aruf that is currently rife in society, which focuses on the position of the Qur'an towards the phenomenon of online ta'aruf. Through the search for literature related to the theme of discussion and using qualitative methods, it is expected to be able to reveal the position of the Qur'an towards the phenomenon of online ta'aruf. This research shows three main points about the Qur'an's view of online ta'aruf; first, convincing and eliminating someone to get to know each other not only physically, but culturally and characteristically. Second, in terms of language, it has the derivation of the words al-'arf which means fragrant, and al-'urf which means goodness which is interpreted as a form of adaptation and adjustment of a person to leave behind racist traits to create peace and tranquility between the two prospective brides. Third, ta'aruf which functions as equalization between positions and also avoids egoism which aims to achieve the interests and goodness between the two prospective brides. interests and goodness between the two prospective brides.

Abstract

This study contributes to strengthening ecological tafsir discourse and offers practical implications for education and environmental awareness based on Islamic values. The growing environmental crisis has prompted renewed interest in religious approaches to ecological sustainability. While previous studies have discussed Islamic environmental ethics, limited attention has been given to the ecological implications of Qur’anic cosmology in contemporary tafsir. This study investigates the ecological meaning of cosmological verses in the Qur’an through the interpretation of M. Quraish Shihab and examines their relevance to current environmental concerns. Using a qualitative library research design, data were collected from Tafsir Al-Mishbah and related academic literature, then analyzed through thematic and interpretive approaches. The study finds that Quraish Shihab’s interpretation emphasizes three interconnected ecological principles: mīzān (cosmic balance), khalīfah (human stewardship), and the prohibition of fasād (environmental destruction). These principles position humans as morally responsible agents in preserving ecological harmony. The analysis further shows that Qur’anic cosmology functions not only as a theological explanation of the universe but also as an ethical framework for environmental responsibility. The study demonstrates the relevance of ecological tafsir in addressing contemporary environmental challenges from an Islamic perspective.

Abstract

This study examines one of the central principles of the Madrasah al-'Aqliyyah al-Hadithah (modern rationalist school), namely the concept of thematic unity (al-waḥdah al-mawḍūʿiyyah) as articulated in Mahmoud Shaltout's Tafsir al-Qur'an al-Karim. It aims to explore both the application of this principle and its implications for Shaltut's methodology of Qur'anic interpretation. Employing a descriptive-analytical approach, the study collects, describes, and critically analyzes data derived from Shaltut's exegesis. The findings demonstrate that the paradigm of thematic unity plays a significant role in Tafsir al-Qur'an al-Karim, as reflected in its profound exploration of the central themes of each surah and its precise analysis of Qur’anic diction. At the level of uṣūl al-tafsīr, this paradigm entails a reconceptualization of asbāb al-nuzūl, which are no longer treated in a fragmentary manner, and reaffirms the role of the Prophetic Sunnah as an interpretive source that must remain consistent with the overarching thematic framework of the surah.
