Abstract

Khamr, or intoxicating beverages, has long been a social issue of concern in Islamic teachings, particularly due to its impact on individuals and society. Although the Qur’an explicitly prohibits khamr, questions remain regarding the socio-historical background behind its prohibition. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the underlying factors of khamr prohibition in the Qur’an through a socio-historical approach and to examine the interpretation of relevant verses according to the commentaries of At-Thabari and Ibn Kathir. This research employs a library research method by utilizing primary sources such as the Qur’an, classical exegesis, and other relevant literature. The findings reveal that the prohibition of khamr was not only based on religious principles but also closely related to the social conditions of Arab society during the time of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), in which the consumption of khamr caused intellectual decline, social conflict, and disharmony in community life. The interpretations by At-Thabari and Ibn Kathir emphasize that although khamr may have limited benefits, its harms far outweigh them in terms of physical, moral, and social aspects.

Abstract

This study explores the phenomenon of musical accompaniment in the recitation of the Qur’an (Tilawah Qur’an) from the perspective of classical and contemporary Islamic scholarship. As a sacred practice, Qur’anic recitation requires reverence and concentration, yet the use of music alongside tilawah has sparked significant debate. Some scholars argue that music enhances the aesthetic and emotional aspects of recitation, while others reject it for potentially undermining its sanctity. Employing a qualitative method with a literature review approach, this research refers to Sayyid Qutb’s Fi Zhilalil Qur’an, Fakhruddin al-Razi’s Tafsir al-Kabir, as well as the views of Al-Ghazali, Ibn Taymiyyah, and Yusuf al-Qaradawi. The findings reveal that the Qur’an neither explicitly permits nor prohibits music, but rather emphasizes tartil (measured recitation), khushu’ (reverence), and respect for its sacredness. Sayyid Qutb strongly opposed the use of music, considering the Qur’an’s beauty sufficient without external additions, while Fakhruddin al-Razi regarded music as neutral and permissible so long as it does not cause distraction. In conclusion, musical accompaniment in Tilawah Qur’an is an ijtihadi issue that requires careful consideration, taking into account context, intention, and its impact on spiritual focus and the comprehension of Qur’anic meaning.

Abstract

The study of war or qitāl in the Qur'an often causes controversy, primarily because some circles still associate verses of jihad with violence or terrorism. This indicates a gap in understanding that needs to be bridged through in-depth tafsir (exegesis) studies. This research aims to analyze the concept of war in the Qur'an through a comparative study of two tafsirs: Tafsir Al-Mishbah by Quraish Shihab and Tafsir Al-Muharrar Al-Wajiz by Ibn Athiyyah. The method used is qualitative research based on a literature study with a thematic and comparative approach. The results show that both mufassirs (exegetes) agree that war in Islam is defensive in nature, oriented toward justice, and limited by humanitarian values. War is not intended as a means of aggression but as a last resort for self-defense and the protection of religious freedom. However, differences are observed in the emphasis: Tafsir Al-Mishbah highlights the contextual, moral, and spiritual aspects more, while Tafsir Al-Muharrar Al-Wajiz tends to emphasize the legal side of fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) and linguistic debates. This study contributes by demonstrating how contextual-moral and fiqh-linguistic approaches complement each other in constructing a holistic Qur’anic understanding of war.

Abstract

The miracles (i'jaz) in the Qur'an can be examined not only from a linguistic perspective, but also from a numerical perspective. One interesting phenomenon is the hadith about the virtue of reciting Surah As-Sajdah and Surah Al-Insan during the Fajr prayer on Friday. This study aims to explore these two surahs through a mathematical approach. A quantitative descriptive method with median analysis was used in this study. The data examined included the number of verses and words in Surah As-Sajdah, Surah Al-Insan, and the range of surahs between the two. The integration model used was mathematics to explore the Qur'an. The results of the study show three main findings. First, the median word in Surah As-Sajdah falls on verse 15, precisely on the word sujjada, which means prostration, and is located in the verse of prostration. Second, both the median verse and the median word in Surah Al-Insan consistently point to verse 16. Third, the median verse from the beginning of Surah As-Sajdah to the end of Surah Al-Insan points to Surah Muhammad verse 18, which talks about the signs of the Day of Judgment, in line with the belief that the Day of Judgment will occur on Friday. These findings show that simple mathematical analyses such as the median can be applied to reveal the regularity and numerical wonders in the Qur'an. This research contributes to the study of the i'jaz of the Qur'an from a mathematical perspective while opening up opportunities for the development of Qur'an-based mathematics learning integration.

Abstract

The fundamental problem in the implementation of Qur’an memorization programs in Islamic higher education institutions is that many students struggle to maintain the quality of their memorization due to inadequate foundations in Qur’anic recitation and fluctuating motivation. This study aims to analyze the implementation and impact of integrating taḥfīẓ, taḥsin, and tadabur (3T) in improving the Qur’an memorization ability of students in the Al-Qur’an and Tafsir Studies Program at Universitas Darussalam Gontor. This study employs a qualitative approach with a field research design. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving students and lecturers or muhāfiẓ, and then analyzed using triangulation techniques. The findings show that taḥfīẓ enhances the quantity of memorization and student discipline, taḥsin improves accuracy of recitation and memorization stability, while tadabur strengthens verse comprehension and students’ intrinsic motivation. This study recommends strengthening individual mentoring, differentiating memorization targets, and optimizing the role of muhāfiẓ to ensure that the integration of the tahfid, taḥsin and tadabur is implemented more effectively and sustainably.

Abstract

Advancements in information technology and its central feature of global connectivity permit the exchange of information and interactions among diverse cultures and religions. Social media platforms have released the boundaries of geographical stretch and demographic regions that approve the infiltration of particular mindsets, lifestyles, and behavioral tendencies. The use of social media in the public sphere has led to a distinctive social behavior in the form of lifestyle dubbed flexing. The flexing lifestyle is a behavioral phenomenon to exhibit one's wealth and self-achievement to urge society to be wasteful. This study aims to examine the phenomenon of flexing from the perspective of the Qur'an; analyze the term al-ḥayāt al-dunyā in the verse of QS. al-Ḥadīd [57]: 20. This research employs interpretive-qualitative analysis using a semantic analysis approach designed by Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas in examining conceptual meanings in the Qur'an. The results of this study indicate that flexing is a nefarious consumption behavior in socio-economic theory refers as emulative consumption. This behavior has become a lifestyle and has impacted the community's mode of living. This lifestyle in the Qur'anic term is called al-ḥayāt al-dunyā, semantically a lowly lifestyle. This concept emerges from a semantic analysis of the phrase al-ḥayāt al-dunyā comprising the meanings la'ib (game), lahw (joking), zīnah (things that are dear to human lust), tafākhur (proud of one's achievements in facade of people), takāṡur (competing in the accumulation of wealth), farḥ (momentary happiness), matā' (temporary pleasure), and ghurūr (something that deceives). In the light of the Qur'an, this behavior is a demeanor mode of living, because it disregards the disobedient from remembering God and the afterlife.

Abstract

Ismail Raji al-Faruqi and Sayyid Muhammad Naquib al-Attas were the founders of the Islamization of Knowledge movement. As Muslim philosophers, both have their own methods in formulating thoughts that originate from the Qur’an and Sunnah. So this research tries to reveal the method of Ismail Raji al-Faruqi and Sayyid Muhammad Naquib al-Attas in revealing the meanings contained in the verses of the Qur'an. This research uses a descriptive analysis method to compare the interpretation methods used by al-Faruqi and al-Attas. Among the conclusions of this research is that al-Faruqi uses an axiological approach in interpreting the Qur'an, where the verses of the Qur'an have a multi-level axiological value. Whereas al-Attas uses a semantic approach in interpreting the verses of the Qur'an and refers to elements of bil ma'tsur such as the Hadith of the Prophet SAW.

Abstract

This study discusses the development of interpretative meaning in the Qur’anic exegesis carried out by Gus Yahya Cholil Staquf, with a specific focus on Surah Al-Mu’minun verse 6. The central focus of this research lies in how Gus Yahya, in addition to his role as a national political figure, actively contributes to Qur’anic interpretation through his teachings delivered to students at the Raudlatut Thalibin Islamic Boarding School in Rembang. These tafsir sessions are broadcast live via the Gus Mus Channel on YouTube, serving as an important medium for disseminating Islamic thought and Qur’anic interpretations to the broader public. This study aims to examine the form of meaning development applied by Gus Yahya Cholil Staquf in interpreting QS. Al-Mu’minun:6 and to analyze the implications of that meaning development for Qur’anic interpretation in the contemporary era. The method used is descriptive-analytical with a library research approach. The primary source of this research is the recorded tafsir sessions of Tafsir Jalalain by Gus Yahya on the Gus Mus Channel, while secondary sources include relevant books, journals, and scholarly references. The findings reveal that there are three main functions in the development of meaning in Gus Yahya’s interpretation of QS. Al-Mu’minun verse 6, first, the historical function, which highlights that the phrase mā malakat aymānuhum previously referred to the practice of owning female slaves; Second, the meaning development function, which reflects efforts to recontextualize the phrase to align with contemporary legal and social values, such as lawful relationships through marriage; and Third, the implicative function, which emphasizes the verse’s social and ethical significance in shaping individual moral awareness and preserving sexual integrity in modern society. The main contribution of this study lies in how Gus Yahya’s contextual interpretation serves as a bridge between classical meanings and universal human values in the modern era. As such, this research offers a significant contribution to grounding the Qur’an as a text that remains relevant and transformative amid the challenges of contemporary times.
