Abstract

The history of Christianity in Indonesia is inextricably linked to that of Western colonialism. Due to this historical fact, Christianity has been stigmatized in Indonesian mainly by Muslim society as a colonial religion. This stigma later emerged in a number of Indonesian Christian communities. This study will look at the development of Coptic Orthodox Christianity in Indonesia through the lens of a religious purification movement. This study employs a sequential mixed research method that includes interviews, questionnaires, observation, and documentation. This study show  that the conversion of mainstream Christians to Coptic Orthodox Christianity arose from a perception that mainstream Christianity was impure, too westernized, and did not conform to the identity of Indonesians as Easterners. This study ends with a conclusion that the presence of the Coptic Orthodox Christian community in Indonesia was exacerbated by an identity crisis, moral criticism, and rejection of the truth system in mainstream Christianity, as well as a desire to return to authentic Christianity.

There were four stages in carrying out the historical approach, namely heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography, while data collection is used literature review. The results indicated that the way Turkish Muslims dress has been influenced by government ideology. Meanwhile, during the time of Mustafa Kemal, who upheld the secularist ideology, Turkish people were forbidden from wearing head coverings, veils, Muslim clothing, and fez. Even the Turkish people were ordered to dress in a Western style, while during the time of Tayyip Erdogan, where he tried to transform Turkish secularism into a more moderate one, lifted some of the prohibitions during the Kemal era by allowing the Turkish people to wear headscarves, veils, fez and Muslim clothing.

Abstract

This research focuses on the analysis of women’s existence in the Egyptian novel entitled Sikkat al-Manāṣirah by Muḥammad Jibrīl. This study aims to reveal the strategies and driving factors of the main female character in fighting for her existence in the novel. The primary data of this study are derived from Sikkat al-Manāṣirah, while the secondary data are obtained from books, previous studies, and relevant online references. This study uses qualitative descriptive methods and library techniques, namely by describing data related to the criteria of strategies and driving factors of the struggle for women’s existence using Simone de Beauvoir’s existentialist feminism approach. The results of the study show that there are four strategies of the main female character in fighting for her existence, including being an intellectual woman, a hardworking woman, contributing to society, and refusing to be an object. Meanwhile, the driving factors for the emergence of women’s struggle for existence are triggered by economic conditions and thoughts towards change. The implication of this research confirm that women’s existence within the text functions as a process of becoming a subject through choice, labor, and self-assertion. These findings strengthen gender-sensitive literary through economic independence and critical consciousness.

Abstract

Carnivalesque or carnival behavior is a concept coined by Mikhail Bakhtin about the suspension of all forms of social rules and hierarchies in literature. This is reflected in an Egyptian short story Asy-Syahiid written by Taufiq al-Chakim (1898-1987). The short story tells of a demonic character who wants to repent of his attitudes known as a human tempter. The satanic narrative described as contradicting the understanding of divine religion shows that al-Hakim tries to present the carnivalesque aspect in his work. This study will analyze the carnivalesque elements in the short story and the ideology behind the carnivalesque depictions. The method used is descriptive analysis method, namely by first describing the carnivalesque elements in the short story, then analyzing the ideology behind the depiction of these elements. The results showed that the short story Asy-Syahiid represented carnivalesque elements, such as profanation, comical elements, and multiplicity of tones. The ideology shown by the short story is a form of al-Hakim's criticism of humanity categorized by the devil's repentant narrative.

Abstract

The poem “Nachnu Sya’bun Laa Yastachii” by Ahmad Numaini serves as a socio-historical critique, reflecting sectarian tensions and political dynamics in Iraq. This study explores two primary aspects: first, how the poem reflects the socio-political context of Iraq during its composition, and second, its portrayal of Shiite history as interpreted by the poet. Employing a qualitative research methodology with Alan Swingewood’s literary sociology approach, this study analyzes the poem’s use of historical symbolism, particularly the Karbala tragedy, to critique patterns of betrayal and disunity within the Muslim community. The findings reveal that the poem functions as both a reflection of its era and a critique of contemporary socio-political conditions. This study highlights the role of literature in documenting and critiquing historical and societal phenomena, reinforcing its relevance as a medium for social commentary.
