Abstract

The family Enterobacteriaceae includes a group of Gram negative facultative anaerobes. Members of this family are known to develop resistance to β- lactam antibiotics including carbapenems. Present study was carried out to identify presence of selected genetic determinants of carbapenem resistance in carbapenem non-susceptible Enterobacteriaceae at Teaching Hospital, Batticaloa. Isolates which were resistant or intermediate sensitive to any of carbapenems using routine sensitivity testing (CLSI) were collected from October 2015 to March 2016, sub cultured on blood agar and MacConkey agar and incubated in air at 37 0C for 18 – 24 hours. PCR amplification of blaTEM, blaSHV and blaCTX – M as potential genetic determinants of Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamases (ESBLs) and blaOXA – 48, blaKPC and blaNDM as genetic determinants for carbapenemases was performed. Total of 768 Enterobacteriaceae were isolated during study period and of these 5 were confirmed as resistant to carbapenem group i.e. carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE). All five isolates were intermediate resistant or resistant to imipenem, meropenem, ertapenem, ceftazidime, cefotaxime, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin and aztreonam. Four isolates carried at least one potential genetic determinant of blaCTX – M in 3, blaTEM in 3 and blaSHV in 2 isolates. Four isolates were found to carry at least one of genetic determinants of blaOXA – 48 in 3 and blaNDM in 1.

Abstract

Reproductive rights can be defined as personal freedoms recognized under human rights, particularly for women. The Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) emphasizes that women have the right to make decisions regarding reproduction, including the right to choose whether or not to have children, as well as the right to access reproductive health services. Issues related to women's reproductive rights are part of the broader concept of freedom, which encompasses the right to self-determination over one's body and life. In Indonesian society, perspectives on reproduction often reflect cultural norms and religious beliefs that view childbearing as a woman's duty after marriage. From these viewpoints, reproduction is considered an obligation for a wife to continue the lineage. A woman is often not regarded as a "complete" wife unless she can bear children. Frequently, neighbors, exte.nded family members, and even husbands pressure women to conceive and give birth, perceiving it as an intrinsic duty of a wife after marriage. This perspective also leads women to feel that having children is an obligation they must fulfill. If they do not have children-either yet or at all-they often see themselves as having failed to meet their perceived responsibilities.

Abstract

Incision wounds are characterized by tissue damage or loss caused by sharp objects. Inflammation is the body's protective response to infection, irritation, or injury, marked by redness, heat, swelling, pain, and tissue dysfunction. Styrax paralleloneurus resin has potential wound-healing properties. This study aimed to investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of Styrax paralleloneurus extract on incision wounds in male white mice. Twenty-five mice were divided into five groups: positive control (Betadin), negative control (Vaseline), and three groups receiving 5%, 10%, and 15% Styrax paralleloneurus extract concentrations. Incision wounds (1cm x 0.2cm) were created on the dorsal area. Wound length and closure were observed daily using calipers. ANOVA analysis revealed significant differences (p=0.138 > 0.05) among the extract concentrations, indicating a concentration-dependent anti-inflammatory effect. The 15% concentration demonstrated the fastest wound healing. Bioactive compounds, such as flavonoids, saponins, and terpenoids, likely contribute to the anti-inflammatory effects. This study supports previous research on Styrax paralleloneurus' wound-healing properties. The results suggest Styrax paralleloneurus extract as a potential phytotherapeutic agent for wound healing. Further clinical trials and stability testing are recommended to develop a phytopharmaceutical product. Future studies should investigate the extract's mechanism of action and potential interactions with other medications. Conclusion The 15% concentration of Styrax paralleloneurus extract exhibited the fastest anti-inflammatory effects on incision wounds in male white mice.Recommendations: Conduct clinical trials to assess the stability, efficacy, and safety of Styrax paralleloneurus extract for phytopharmaceutical product development.

Abstract

Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in children, especially in developing countries. Screening is an important first step to detect cases early. Pulmonary tuberculosis is a chronic infectious disease that is a problem not only in Japan but also throughout the world. Screening characteristics that influence the incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis include house ventilation, population density, type of house floor, diet, exclusive breastfeeding, low birth weight, BCG vaccination, smoking status and location, and contact with sick people. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between screening characteristics and the incidence of pulmonary TB in children at the Dau Community Health Center in 2019. This research was conducted using a cross-sectional approach with a total of 78 participants. The results of the study showed that there was a significant relationship between screening characteristics and the incidence of pulmonary TB in children. The researchers suggest integrated collaboration between nutrition, HIA and immunization programs, along with TB elimination programs in community health centers.
