Abstract

Abstract

Background: Sample stability refers to the ability of blood to maintain its quantitative values under specific storage conditions at room temperature (18–25°C) and refrigerated temperature (2–8°C). Objective: To determine the differences in red blood cell count, hemoglobin levels, and erythrocyte morphology using K3EDTA vacutainer and conventional Na2EDTA blood samples under varying temperatures and delay times. Method: This experimental laboratory research used a cross-sectional design involving four male students from the D4 Medical Laboratory Technology Program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sidoarjo. Samples were stored at room temperature (18–25°C) and cold temperature (2– 8°C) with delays of 0, 12, and 24 hours. Examinations were conducted using a hematology analyzer and blood smear preparations. Should include a concise description of the process by which you conducted your research. Result: Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test results showed no significant differences (p>0.05) in red blood cell count and hemoglobin levels. However, morphological changes were observed, including crenation and hypochromia in K3EDTA samples stored cold for 24 hours, and spherocytes and hyperchromia in Na2EDTA samples stored at room temperature for 12 hours should list the results or outcomes of the work you have done so far. Conclusion: The type of anticoagulant and storage conditions did not significantly affect red blood cell count or hemoglobin levels. However, erythrocyte morphology showed alterations influenced by the type of EDTA, temperature, and storage duration. K₃EDTA was more stable in maintaining erythrocyte morphology compared to Na₂EDTA, particularly at cold temperatures.

Abstract

Background:  Tuberculosis (TB) poses a substantial risk as an opportunistic infection in individuals who have received solid organ transplants, particularly in those with liver transplants compounded by inflammatory bowel disease. Managing TB in this group is particularly challenging due to possible drug interactions and the heightened risk of liver toxicity. Case study: We present a 35-year-old male liver transplant recipient with Crohn’s disease, who developed pulmonary TB despite prior prophylaxis and immunosuppression. The first anti-TB treatment was modified and dose-reduced due to the patient's immunocompromised status. This regimen failed, with recurrent positive sputum cultures. Upon retreatment with a full-dose triple regimen excluding pyrazinamide, the patient responded well with full recovery and no adverse hepatic or Crohn’s-related events. Conclusion: This case illustrates the challenges of treating TB in liver transplant patients with Crohn’s disease, emphasizing the delicate balance between achieving therapeutic effectiveness and minimizing hepatotoxicity. In carefully selected patients, administering a complete tuberculosis treatment protocol without pyrazinamide can provide a safe and effective therapeutic outcome.

Abstract

Background: Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, with rising incidence in developing countries. Vitamin D3 has been implicated in colorectal cancer development, regulating cell proliferation, apoptosis, and Wnt/β-catenin signaling. Despite the growing body of literature, a comprehensive bibliometric analysis integrating colorectal cancer and vitamin D3 is still limited, highlighting a need to map research trends and collaboration patterns. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate global research trends, thematic structures, and collaboration networks in colorectal cancer and vitamin D3 research to identify hotspots and gaps. Methods: A quantitative bibliometric analysis was conducted using the Scopus database with the TITLE-ABS-KEY query: (“colorectal cancer” OR “colorectal carcinoma” OR “colorectal neoplasm” OR “colon cancer” OR “rectal cancer”) AND (“vitamin D3” OR cholecalciferol OR “25-hydroxyvitamin D3” OR calcitriol). Publications from 2015–2025 in English, including articles and reviews, were included. Data were analyzed using VOSviewer and Biblioshiny to assess publication trends, country- and author-level output, co-authorship networks, keyword co-occurrence, and thematic evolution. Results: Publication output peaked in 2020–2021, with the United States and China leading contributions. Munoz, A., Bostick, R.M., and Zhang, Y. were the most prolific authors. Keyword analysis revealed two main clusters: molecular mechanisms (VDR, calcitriol, Wnt/β-catenin) and clinical studies (vitamin D3 supplementation, serum concentration, trials). Thematic mapping indicated mature molecular research, active clinical translation, and emerging topics. Conclusion: Colorectal cancer research balances well-established molecular insights with evolving clinical applications. Concentrated output in high-capacity countries and underrepresentation in high-burden regions highlight opportunities for capacity building, international collaboration, and evidence-based prevention strategies.

Abstract

Background: Stunting in children is a persistent public health issue in Indonesia, partly linked to gut microbiota dysbiosis. This imbalance alters short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production, affecting intestinal function and fecal pH. Fecal pH may serve as an indirect marker of microbial disturbance. Objective: To examine the association between fecal pH as an indicator of intestinal dysbiosis and stunting incidence among children in Indonesia. Methods: This review systematically searched Google Scholar, PubMed, and Scopus. Of 1,777 screened articles, 14 met inclusion criteria and were analyzed qualitatively. Results: Most studies reported higher fecal pH and microbial imbalance in stunted children. Common findings included elevated Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratios, higher pathogenic species, and reduced SCFA-producing bacteria. Synbiotic interventions improved microbial composition, lowered fecal pH, and supported growth. Conclusion: Elevated fecal pH is associated with gut dysbiosis and stunting in children. Its role as a low-cost biomarker could support early screening and targeted stunting prevention strategies in resource-limited settings.

Abstract

Background: Indonesia has the third highest prevalence of leprosy, a neglected tropical disease caused by the “Mycobacterium leprae complex which causes neuropathy and hypopigmented skin lesions with hypoesthesia. The main problem in eradicating leprosy is due to its negative social stigma and prevalence in lower socioeconomic populations, as the gold standard for leprosy diagnosis is histopathology of skin smears. Hence, cost and time effective screening tools are needed. PGL-I and NDO-LID are antigens that have been developed as biomarkers used in serological assays, one of them being rapid lateral flow tests. Therefore, a rapid test utilizing a combination of PGL-I and NDO-LID as its marker is potentially a suitable tool for leprosy screening in areas with limited access to healthcare. Objective: To evaluate the diagnostic potential of PGL-I and NDO-LID in rapid lateral flow tests for leprosy. Methods: This literature review was done by using the search engines PubMed, Science Direct, and SpringerLink.  Results: Diagnostic potential studies for PGL-I rapid tests using UCP-LFA and Gold-LFA showed high overall sensitivity and specificity for leprosy patients, with more positive results in MB and PB patients. NDO-LID rapid test diagnostic studies which used the also showed similar results. However, these tests are not as accurate as ELISA and histopathology, but modifications such as additional biomarkers can be used to improve its utility. Conclusion: PGL-I and NDO-LID have good sensitivity and specificity from the results of various diagnostic studies, thus are potentially suitable for field screening of leprosy.

Abstract

Background: Breastfeeding plays a crucial role in fulfilling the nutritional needs of infants for optimal growth and development. WHO recommends exclusive breastfeeding without adding other foods or drinks, for the first six months of a baby's life. Although the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding are widely known, exclusive breastfeeding is still not optimal. Objective: This purpose of this study to analyze the relationship between exclusive breastfeeding and the growth and development of infants aged 6-24 months at Puskesmas Palmerah. Methods: Using a cross-sectional design with a quantitative approach, this study involved 156 samples selected through consecutive non-probability sampling techniques and was conducted from January 2025 to February 2025. Data on the history of exclusive breastfeeding were collected through questionnaires, growth data were measured based on weight and height according to the WHO curve, and development was assessed using KPSP. Data analysis using the Chi-Square test. Conclusion: shows a significant relationship between exclusive breastfeeding and growth with p-value = 0.001 < 0.05 (based on weight-for-age), p-value = 0.006 < 0.05 (based on height-for-age), and p-value = 0.001 < 0.05 (based on weight-for-age). In addition, there's too a noteworthy relationship between elite breastfeeding and advancement with p-value = 0.000 (p<0.005). Thus, exclusive breastfeeding has a positive effect on infant growth and development. Efforts to increase the coverage of exclusive breastfeeding need to continue to be encouraged through education and support from health workers.
