Abstract

Islamic law has a central position in the life of the majority of Indonesian society. Maqashid Sharia, the fundamental principles in Islamic law, became the main purpose of establishing law and became the foundation for the benefit of mankind. This study investigates the application of Maqashid Sharia in legislation through three research methods, namely normative, socio-legal, and literature legal research. The results showed a gap between theory and practice in the application of Maqashid Sharia. Although efforts have been made to integrate the principles of Maqashid Sharia in legislation, their implementation is limited and often influenced by local factors, madhhab, and socio-political context. As many as 40% of the public have a good understanding of Maqashid Sharia, while 60% of respondents, including judges and lawmakers, tend to interpret it according to the Shafi'i school. Therefore, serious efforts are needed in socialization, education, and integration of Maqashid Syariah in the legal system and law enforcement practices in Indonesia. This integration requires a systematic and measurable approach, where the textual approach provides a strong foundation of religious sources, the contextual approach ensures relevance and successful implementation, the participatory approach increases accountability and transparency, and the comparative approach allows the adoption of the best models from other countries

Abstract

The implementation of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) as an important pillar in building student character in elementary schools is the main focus of this research. Using qualitative methods and case study approaches, this study aims to explore how PAI is implemented and its impact on student character building. Through data collection from observations, interviews, and documentation, comprehensive analysis can be performed to deeply understand the process and effects of PAI implementation. In this study, the implementation of PAI was seen through various programs and activities at PKPPS Minhajurrosyidin East Jakarta Class VI Ula. In addition to classroom learning, PAI is also integrated in extracurricular coaching and daily habituation. This shows that religious education does not only occur in the classroom, but also through student interaction in the school environment. Therefore PAI became more than just a subject. The results of the study confirmed that PAI has an important role in building student character. Through religious learning, students are taught religious values that become the moral foundation in their lives. In addition, aspects of honesty, responsibility, and discipline are also emphasized in PAI learning.

Abstract

The transformation of Islamic boarding school education in Indonesia in the modern era is a complex phenomenon involving tradition and innovation. Islamic boarding schools, as traditional Islamic educational institutions, have the challenge of adapting to rapid developments. This is due to efforts to maintain traditional values while integrating innovation values as the essence of this transformation. This research aims to explain the transformation of Islamic boarding school education, describing the role of tradition and innovation, as well as the challenges and opportunities in aligning these two transformation paradigms. Researchers used qualitative research, with literature study and field study research techniques. The research results show that the transformation of Islamic boarding school education requires a balance between maintaining traditional identity and adopting innovative values, which are related to current educational needs. Education stakeholders must have knowledge about educational transformation, especially when they want to design Islamic boarding school education strategies that are responsive to social, cultural and technological changes.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has significantly transformed Islamic da'wah, particularly in the ways religious messages are created, distributed, and consumed. This article examines the transformation of Islamic da'wah in the digital era and its influence on the religious literacy of Muslim millennials, a generation closely connected to digital media. Using a systematic review of empirical and theoretical studies published between 2021 and 2025, the research analyzes how platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and other social media channels have reshaped traditional models of Islamic preaching, religious authority, and communal learning. The findings reveal that digital da'wah has expanded access to Islamic knowledge and increased millennials’ engagement with religious content, contributing positively to religious awareness and worship practices. However, the study also identifies several challenges, including the spread of superficial interpretations, ideological fragmentation, and exposure to radical or decontextualized teachings. The abundance of competing online religious narratives may also create confusion among users in understanding authentic Islamic teachings. The article concludes by proposing the importance of developing critical, moderate, and context-based digital religious literacy to ensure that digital da'wah contributes positively to the intellectual and spiritual development of Muslim millennials.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship between gadget addiction and students' mental health from the perspective of Islamic education. Gadget addiction has become a serious concern among Indonesian students, with demonstrable impacts on multiple dimensions of mental health including anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, and impaired cognitive functioning. Employing a mixed-methods approach—quantitative correlational and qualitative library research—the study integrates empirical data analysis (n=284 senior high school students in three major Indonesian cities) with theoretical examination grounded in Nicholas Carr's The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains and Islamic educational psychology. Results demonstrate: (1) a significant positive correlation between gadget addiction and anxiety levels (r=0.71, p<0.001) and depression (r=0.64, p<0.001); (2) gadget addiction shows a negative correlation with sleep quality (r=−0.68, p<0.001) and academic achievement (r=−0.59, p<0.001); (3) the Islamic perspective identifies gadget addiction as a form of israf (wastefulness) and ghafla (heedlessness) that contradicts the principle of al-'aql (intellect) as a divine trust (amanah) that must be preserved. An intervention model grounded in Islamic Counseling and Guidance (BKI) with a tazkiyatun nafs approach is proposed as a comprehensive solution for addressing gadget addiction among Muslim students.

Abstract

The integration of digital technology into Islamic Religious Education (PAI) represents one of the most consequential pedagogical challenges facing Muslim educational institutions in the twenty-first century. This study empirically investigates the effectiveness of Google Classroom-mediated PAI instruction in transforming the character formation of students at Islamic secondary schools in Java, Indonesia. Grounded in Paulo Freire's critical pedagogy (1970) and Thomas Lickona's three-dimensional character framework (1991, 2004), the study employs a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design. Quantitative data were collected from 320 students across eight schools using the Character Formation Index (CFI), a 45-item validated instrument measuring religious character, digital integrity, and academic responsibility, before and after a 16-week implementation cycle. Qualitative depth was provided through semi-structured interviews with 48 students and 16 PAI teachers. Results revealed statistically significant and educationally substantial improvements across all three character dimensions: religious character increased by 38.6% (Cohen's d = 2.38), digital integrity by 45.4% (d = 2.01), and academic responsibility by 41.7% (d = 1.88). Crucially, pedagogical pattern—particularly the degree of dialogic-transformative use of the platform—emerged as a stronger predictor of character gain than school location or infrastructure quality. These findings ground the formulation of the TAPAK Model (Transformasi Aktif PAI berbasis Karakter / Active Character-Based PAI Transformation), a five-phase instructional framework that systematically operationalises Freirean praxis within Islamic pedagogical tradition. Implications for teacher professional development, curriculum reform, and equitable digital education policy are discussed.

Abstract

This study investigates strategies for internalizing Islamic moral values as a systematic response to the ethical crisis confronting the digital generation. The proliferation of digital technology has engendered dual consequences: the democratization of knowledge access and the concurrent erosion of moral foundations rooted in Islamic tradition. Employing a qualitative-descriptive approach grounded in critical library research (library research), the study analyzes the ethical thought of Franz Rosenthal as articulated in The Muslim Concept of Freedom (1960) and al-Ghazali's Bidayatul Hidayah (eleventh century, Indonesian edition 2019) as primary theoretical frameworks, triangulated with peer-reviewed empirical literature published between 2018 and 2023. Forty-seven articles meeting rigorous inclusion criteria were subjected to systematic content analysis. Findings reveal that the digital ethics crisis manifests across four interconnected dimensions: moral identity disorientation, online disinhibition, moral consumerism, and attention fragmentation. In response, the study identifies three evidence-based internalization strategies: (1) ta'wid digital systematic ethical habituation aligned with al-Ghazali's methodology of repetitive virtuous practice; (2) uswah hasanah reconstructed role-modeling adapted to the influencer-driven digital ecosystem; and (3) tarbiyah ruhiyah integration of spiritual formation into digital educational curricula. These strategies are synthesized into the Integrative Islamic Moral Internalization Model (MIINMI), a three-layered framework encompassing cognitive-theological, affective-spiritual, and behavioral-habitual dimensions. The study concludes that universal Islamic values amanah, 'adl, ihsan, and tawadu' constitute contextually relevant and empirically supported antidotes to moral degradation in the digital era, offering a transcendent normative grounding that secular character education models lack.
