Abstract

Heavy metal pollution in marine waters can enter the food chain and negatively impact aquatic organisms' lives. One organism that is susceptible to exposure is the lamp shell (Lingula unguis), which has the ability to bioaccumulate heavy metals and is often consumed by the public. Considering the health risks posed by heavy metals such as lead (Pb), it is important to test the heavy metal content in clams sold in traditional markets. This study aims to determine the presence and levels of heavy metal Pb in the bodies of lamp shell sold at the Lekok Traditional Market, Pasuruan, East Java. Clam samples were taken purposively based on three sizes: small size ± 5 cm, medium size ± 7 cm and large size ± 9 cm. Pb content testing in lamp shell samples used Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) after the digestion process. The results showed that Pb metal content ranged from 5.11 - 9.26 ppm in large clams ranging from ± 9 cm, while no Lead (Pb) content was found in small and medium sized lantern clams. Compared with the maximum quality limit for lead (Pb) contamination for food safety for shellfish according to several national standards, samples of large lamp shell (Lingua unguis) sold at the Lekok traditional market in Pasuruan have exceeded the safe threshold for consumption. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid consuming large lantern clams.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the condition of the coral reef ecosystem in the waters of Kiya Village using the Line Intercept Transect (LIT) method along a 25-meter transect at a depth of 5 meters. The observation results show that the percentage of live coral cover is 29%, which is classified as moderate according to the criteria of Gomez & Yap (1988). The composition of other substrates consists of Dead Scleractinia 12.8%, algae 12.6%, other fauna 22.4%, and abiotic components 23.2%. The relatively high Dead Scleractinia value indicates ecosystem degradation, which is suspected to be influenced by natural and anthropogenic factors, including the potential impact of nickel mining activities in the Gemaf area. The significant proportion of algae and abiotic components has the potential to inhibit coral regeneration and trigger shifts in the benthic community. However, the moderate category for live coral cover indicates the potential for recovery if ecosystem-based management, control of pollution sources, and community involvement are implemented. The results of this study are expected to serve as a basis for conservation and sustainable management efforts for coral reefs in Kiya Village.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the sex ratio and determine the size at first gonad maturity of Lompa fish (Thryssa baelama) caught in the Learisa Kayeli River, Haruku Island, from May 2019 to April 2020. Samples were collected from two stations using purposive sampling and cast nets. Sex identification and gonad maturity staging were conducted macroscopically in the laboratory. The sex ratio was analyzed using the chi-square test (α = 0.05), while the size at first gonad maturity was estimated using the Spearman-Karber method. A total of 1,090 fish were collected during the study. The overall sex ratio of males to females was 1.11:1.00, with no significant deviation from the expected 1:1 ratio (Station I: χ² = 7.80; Station II: χ² = 18.40; χ² critical = 19.68; df = 11). The mean size at first gonad maturity for males was 101.37 mm at Station I and 106.20 mm at Station II, while for females it was 108.09 mm and 109.02 mm, respectively. These results indicate that male T. baelama reach gonad maturity at smaller sizes than females. The findings provide valuable biological reference data to support local fishery management practices, particularly in regulating the timing of the traditional sasi harvest and recommending appropriate mesh sizes to ensure sustainable utilization of the population.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the income of Mr. Erwin Pah's broiler chicken farming business, which operates under a core-plasma partnership model in Temu Village, Kanatang Subdistrict, East Sumba Regency. The research was conducted using a case study method with primary and secondary data collected during one year of operation with four production cycles. Data analysis included calculations of production costs, receipts, income, and financial feasibility analysis using the B/C and R/C ratios. The results showed that the total revenue for the business during one year was IDR 845,919,250 with total production costs of IDR 1,032,231,703, resulting in a net income of IDR -186,312,453. The B/C Ratio value of 0.82 and the R/C Ratio of –0.18 indicate that the business has not yet achieved financial feasibility in its first year of operation. This negative income is influenced by the dominance of initial investment costs, the number of production cycles that are not yet optimal, and the technical experience of farmers who are still adaptive in the early stages of the business. However, this condition does not reflect the failure of the partnership model, but rather shows the characteristics of the early phase of business development. With increased technical efficiency, optimization of the number of production cycles, and more intensive managerial assistance, the broiler chicken farming partnership business has the potential to achieve financial feasibility and business sustainability in the next period.
