Abstract

Existence means something that exists. If something exists, then that something will also no longer exist. In other words, there is and there is not. From being to not being is change. Something that exists becomes nothing that is change. It is commonly said that change is eternal or eternal or nitya. From eternal or nitya to not eternal or anitya. So it is important to understand human existence from the perspective of Hindu philosophy.

Abstract

This paper explores the intercultural communication dynamics of the Sasak tribe, indigenous to Lombok, Indonesia. With globalization affecting cultural interactions, understanding the communication methods within and involving the Sasak people is increasingly crucial. The study uses a qualitative approach to gather data on the Sasak tribe's rich cultural heritage, which is influenced by indigenous traditions and marked by distinct language, arts, customs, and social structures.Key intercultural communication theories are applied to analyze the Sasak tribe’s interactions. Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions Theory reveals the tribe's tendencies towards high power distance, strong collectivism, moderate to high uncertainty avoidance, and long-term orientation. Howard Giles’ Communication Accommodation Theory explains how the Sasak people adjust their communication styles through convergence and divergence when interacting with different cultural groups. Stella Ting-Toomey’s Face Negotiation Theory provides insights into the importance of face-saving and face-giving strategies in maintaining respect and honor in Sasak culture. William Gudykunst’s Anxiety/Uncertainty Management Theory highlights the role of mindfulness and cultural empathy in effective intercultural communication. The study concludes that these theories provide valuable frameworks for understanding the Sasak tribe's cultural interactions, emphasizing the need for mutual respect and understanding in an interconnected world. By integrating these theories, we gain a comprehensive appreciation of the complexities in the Sasak tribe’s communication practices, promoting effective and respectful intercultural interactions.

Abstract

Muja Sumbang comes from the Dayak language of Dusun Malang in Lahei Barat regency, North Barito district. Muja Sumbang is composed of two words, "Muja," which means mantra worship, and the word "Sumbang," which means wrong view. Thus, Muja Sumbang is the worship of God/Jus Tuha Alah Talla, his manifestations, and his ancestors to ask for forgiveness and protection for the occurrence of false marriages between male and female couples. According to the beliefs of the Kaharingan Hindu community in Papar Pujung Village, Lahei Barat District, North Barito Regency, this marriage is not appropriate or should not be performed because this marriage occurs when a woman is pregnant out of wedlock and a man and woman live together without marital status. If the marriage goes ahead, the man and woman must perform the ceremony in accordance with local customary law. According to the beliefs of the Kaharingan Hindu community in Papar Pujung, Lahei Barat District, North Barito Regency, the Muja Sumbang ceremony is an attempt to purify the couple physically and mentally and to restore the balance of nature that has been created or disturbed by the couple's deviant behavior.

Abstract

Cultural heritage education plays an essential role in preserving collective memory, strengthening cultural identity, and transmitting values across generations. In the digital era, however, conventional heritage learning often struggles to engage contemporary learners who are more accustomed to interactive, adaptive, and technology-mediated learning environments. This article proposes a conceptual framework for AI-driven gamified learning in cultural heritage education as a pedagogical response to this challenge. Drawing on relevant literature on artificial intelligence in education, AI scaffolding, gamified learning, instructional design, and culturally grounded learning, this conceptual study examines how AI and gamification may be meaningfully integrated to support heritage learning. The discussion suggests that artificial intelligence can provide adaptive support, personalized feedback, and scaffolding, while gamified learning can strengthen motivation, participation, and sustained engagement through challenge-based and interactive learning structures. The proposed framework positions heritage learning input as the cultural foundation of instruction, AI-driven adaptive support and gamified learning design as complementary enabling mechanisms, transformative learning as the pedagogical core, and proximal educational outcomes together with cultural sustainability-oriented outcomes as the expected results. This article argues that AI-driven gamified learning offers a plausible conceptual pathway for making cultural heritage education more engaging, reflective, and relevant for digital-age learners, while indirectly supporting the preservation and transmission of cultural values as part of a broader sustainability-oriented educational practice

Abstract

Learning in pre-service elementary teacher education requires the use of instructional media that can support accurate and engaging concept delivery. One alternative instructional medium that can be utilized is digital comics based on applications. This study aims to describe the use of the Pixton application in pre-service elementary teacher education through digital comic creation activities. The study employed a qualitative descriptive approach involving 48 third-semester students of the Elementary School Teacher Education program. Data were collected through classroom observation, digital comic creation assignments, and analysis of students’ work. The findings indicate that the use of the Pixton application provided meaningful learning experiences for students and encouraged the development of creative and contextual visual-based instructional media. Students also demonstrated positive responses toward the use of digital comics as a varied alternative instructional medium. These findings suggest that the Pixton application has the potential to be utilized in pre-service elementary teacher education to equip students with the ability to design engaging and meaningful instructional media.

Abstract

This study examines how ritual language functions as a semiotic mechanism for constructing moral identity in the Katoba ceremony in Southeast Sulawesi. While previous research has explored language and morality, localized ritual practices in non-Western contexts remain underrepresented. To address this gap, this study adopts a qualitative, discourse-based approach grounded in semiotic theory, indexicality, and Systemic Functional Linguistics to analyze selected ritual utterances. The findings show that moral identity is constructed through recurring linguistic patterns that index coherence between belief, speech, and action. Triadic expressions linking heart, tongue, and behavior serve as key structures in defining moral personhood. In addition, ritual language encodes moral transformation through structured stages of repentance, establishes ethical boundaries through distinctions between lawful and unlawful conduct, and reinforces hierarchical social relations, particularly within the family. These linguistic forms operate not only as representations but also as performative and indexical signs that actively shape moral understanding and social positioning. The study demonstrates that moral identity in the Katoba ritual emerges dynamically through participation in culturally embedded discourse, reflecting the interaction between religious values and local linguistic practices

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the position of customary law in the national legal system following the enactment of Government Regulation Number 55 of 2025 Concerning Procedures and Criteria for Determining Living Law in Society. Using John Griffiths' legal pluralism theoretical framework, this study examines whether the regulation grants full autonomy to customary law or strengthens the dominance of state law. The method used is normative juridical with a conceptual approach. The research findings indicate that GR 55/2025 tends to be categorized as weak legal pluralism. This is because recognition of customary law still relies heavily on state-acknowledged validation, where customary norms are only considered valid to the extent they do not conflict with national interests and statutory regulations. This article concludes that despite codification efforts, the relationship between state law and customary law remains hierarchical and unequal.
