Abstract

The political profession is a form of vocation, a livelihood by design. In this regard, observing contemporary Indonesia, one might contend -without intent to disparage- that the nation resembles a “house of disorder” inhabited by individuals -including politicians- driven to madness by power, corruption-collusion-nepotism, and the pursuit of position. This study explores alternative religious ideas concerning the ethics of vocational happiness as applicable to today's political actors. Employing content analysis, it contextualizes two figures: Dante Alighieri and Mochtar Lubis as material objects alongside the ethics of professional happiness as a formal object. Ethical Indonesian politicians may find fulfillment through measured prosperity, aesthetic-poetic living, promotion systems rooted in datacracy, and firm revocation of professional licenses for ethical breaches. Dante’s nine infernal circles: limbo, lust, gluttony, greed, wrath, heresy, violence, fraud, and treachery, portray moral descent; while Lubis’s depiction of the Indonesian character exposes hypocrisy, irresponsibility, feudalism, symbolic fixation, weak will, extravagance, and one virtue: artistry. Remarkably, both thinkers resonate with critical, religiously grounded visions that may prove transformative for political vocational ethics in Indonesia.

Abstract

Digital transformation has become a key driver of change, particularly in the fields of culture and education in the era of globalization. The concepts of Smart Education and Smart Culture have emerged as strategies to integrate technology in efforts to improve the quality of learning while preserving cultural values. This study employs a literature review method by examining various scientific sources, such as journal articles, books, and research documents relevant to digital education and cultural change. The results of the study indicate that the use of digital technologies—such as online learning platforms, artificial intelligence, and the digitization of culture—can improve access to education, make the learning process more effective, and help preserve and develop local culture. Furthermore, the synergy between Smart Education and Smart Culture helps foster a society that is more innovative, creative, and capable of competing at the international level. Therefore, digital innovation plays a vital role in shaping a better and more sustainable education and cultural landscape.

Abstract

Mpu Tanakun’s Kakawin Siwaratrikalpa is a fascinating text to explore further to gain insight into the religious phenomena of Balinese Hinduism. This article focuses on the Siva-centric discourse found within this literary work. The research method employed is qualitative, utilizing a hermeneutic and comparative perspective between literature as a form of orthodoxy and religious rituals as a manifestation of orthopraxis. The findings reveal that the pursuit of Lubdhaka culminates in forgiveness within a simple and meditative Saivistic path, thereby achieving full awareness in the darkest night, leading toward the light—or Siva himself. Therefore, the Kakawin Siwaratrikalpa offers another alternative path, primarily through the Siwaratri ritual, which is orthopraxis in nature, without losing the meaning and value of Siva-ness itself yet is more meditative.

Abstract

Amid the escalating global environmental crisis, examining the contribution of local theology to ecological ethics has become increasingly important. This study investigates how the worship of Lord Shiva in Gobleg Village, Bali, constructs an integration between Hindu spirituality and environmental awareness rooted in local wisdom. Employing a qualitative approach with an interpretive ethnographic method, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The findings reveal that the capah ritual structure represents Hindu cosmology, not only reflecting a hierarchy of sacred space but also fostering ecological ethics through the sacralization of nature as a manifestation of the divine. The concept of Shiva as sarvavy?pi (omnipresent) serves as a theological foundation for environmental preservation practices, manifested in the reverence for forests, water sources, and sacred landscapes. This study demonstrates that local Hindu theology in Gobleg Village functions not merely as a form of religious tradition, but as a model of spiritual ecology that is relevant to sustainable development and the strengthening of ecological culture at both local and global levels.

Abstract

Hindu devotees are obligated to perform the Tumpek Pengatag ceremony on Saturday Kliwon Wariga, for the fertility and prosperity of vegetation. Ecotheologically, Hindus cherish the environment by worshiping the Almighty God in his image as Sang Hyang Pasupati. Abstract

This study stems from a critique of the global development paradigm, which tends to be reductionist in its understanding of sustainability by separating ecological, social, and cultural dimensions. This article argues that Hindu Kaharingan, as the religio-cultural system of the Dayak people, offers an integrative alternative model through the interconnection of cosmology, community, and continuity as the foundation of a sustainable civilization. Using a critical-interpretive qualitative approach, this study analyzes Kaharingan cosmology as a relational ontology, community practices as the basis for social sustainability, and the dynamics of continuity as a form of living heritage. The findings indicate that Hindu Kaharingan not only contains ecological ethics but also social and cultural mechanisms that support holistic sustainability. However, this integration faces tensions with a global paradigm that is fragmentary, technocratic, and tends to instrumentalize local knowledge. The novelty of this research lies in the development of an integrative sustainability framework grounded in religio-cultural principles that not only describes local values but also critiques power relations within global discourses. Thus, Hindu Kaharingan is positioned as a relevant epistemic resource in building a more reflective, relational, and contextual sustainable civilization.

Abstract

Globalization and digitalization have triggered rapid and complex social changes, particularly for the younger generation as the group most adaptable to technological advancements. These transformations present not only opportunities but also serious challenges, including identity crises, moral degradation, and cultural disruption. This study aims to analyze the influence of globalization and digitalization on changes in the values and identity of the younger generation, the urgency of internalizing religious and cultural values in character formation, and strategies for their implementation in the modern era. The study employs a qualitative approach using literature review (library research) and descriptive-analytical analysis, grounded in the theory of value internalization and the theory of globalization. The findings indicate that globalization leads to value instability, a shift of local cultures toward the dominance of global culture, and the emergence of generational value gaps. The reinforcement of religious values serves as a moral guide, while cultural values preserve collective identity and social sustainability. Strategies for value internalization are implemented through the synergy of family, education, and society in a sustainable and contextual manner.

Abstract

Character education is a crucial aspect of the education system because it plays a role in shaping students who are not only academically excellent but also possess moral integrity and social responsibility. This article aims to examine the concept of character education in the modern era, its implementation in school settings, and the various challenges faced in strengthening it. The study employs a qualitative approach using library research, analyzing various scientific articles, books, and relevant documents. The findings indicate that character education in the modern era is understood as a holistic process of internalizing values through the development of students’ moral, social, emotional, and spiritual aspects. Its implementation is achieved by integrating character values into the learning process and school culture. The main challenges faced include the development of digital technology, declining social awareness, a crisis of role models, the influence of globalization, weak synergy within the educational environment, and the dominance of an academic orientation. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen character education in a way that is contextual, collaborative, and sustainable.
