Assessing the feasibility of forest plantation of native species: A case study of Agathis dammara and Eusideroxylon zwageri in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 2453-2461. Plantation forest using native species is very important effort to support biodiversity conservation. Still, analysis on its feasibility is needed to guarantee the sustainable forest management. The research aims were to assess the feasibility of plantation forestry of Agathis dammara and Eusideroxylon zwageri based on production models and financial simulation of stands management. The production models were developed based on plantation forests in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Using these plantation we developed models to estimate tree volume, total volume per hectare, Mean Annual Volume Increment (MAI) and Current Annual Increment (CAI) for each species. Financial analyses were carried out to assess the Pay Back Period (PBP), Net Present Value (NPV), Net Benefit/Cost (B/C) Ratio, Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and Equivalent Annual Annuity (EAA). The results of production model showed that A. dammara stands would reach optimum production at the age of 25 years while that of E. zwageri at the age of 150 years. A. dammara stands produce higher MAI of 15.67 m3ha-1 year-1 and total volume of 383.72 m3ha-1 than E. zwageri with MAI 1.89 m3ha-1 year-1 and total volume of 282.78 m3ha-1. The result of financial analysis showed that A. dammara plantation had the IRR higher than the Minimum Acceptable Rate (MAR) and the Net B/C Ratio of higher than 1, while E. zwageri had the Net B/C Ratio of lower than 1. A. dammara plantation also had a positive NPV value of IDR 78,699,974 while E. zwageri plantation had a negative NPV value of IDR 91,439,292. These results suggest that developing A. dammara plantation is more desirable than E. zwageri plantation.

A comparative study of tree community structure and natural regeneration status in Bontang urban forest and conservation forest of the LNG Industrial Plant Area, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 2841-2847. The objective of this study was to describe and compare the community structure and natural regeneration status of tree species in urban forests within industrial estates. This study was conducted in two types of forests, Bontang urban forests within industrial area and conservation forests in the Industrial buffer zone area. At each forest location, a transect was made, and along the transect, a plot of size 20 x 20 meters was made with a distance between plots of 100 meters. In each plot, several subplots were made with size of 5m x 5m for sapling level, and 2m x 2m for seedling level. The results of this study showed that in urban forest areas there were 32 tree-level species, 21 sapling species and 15 seedling species, belonging of 49 genera and 39 families. The number of species, species richness, species diversity, evenness of sapling and tree-level species was more in urban forests than in conservation forest, and the condition was vice versa for seedling level. The value of species dominance index in conservation forest was greater than urban forest, and conversely, the value of individual density/ha for tree-level was 562.50 individuals/ha, sapling level was 7,933 ind./Ha and for seeding level 80,625 ind./ha. Of the 53 urban forest species, 28 species (52.83%) were in no regeneration category, 3 species (5.66%) were in poor regeneration category, and 22 species (41.50%) were in the new species category. In contrast, among 76 species of the conservation forests, 8 species (10.52%) showed good regeneration status, 13 species (17.10%) showed poor status and 55 species (72.36%) showed no regeneration status. From the results, it can be concluded that the Bontang urban forest in the industrial area shows no regeneration status and the emergence of new species. In the context of conservation, it is recommended to implement special silvicultural techniques to maintain the biodiversity of this urban forest.

The archaeal community in the soil surrounding rice roots plays key roles in biogeochemical cycles. Methanogenic archaea contribute to CH4 production in the rice field and control CH4 emission rates; an important greenhouse gas significantly emitted from the rice field. Characteristic of archaeal and methanogenic community in Indonesian rice field has not been well documented. In this study, rice plants grown in the rice field were treated with two different fertilizer applications, i.e., 100% urea without biofertilizer (250 kg ha-1) (B0), and 50% urea (125 kg ha-1) with biofertilizer consisted of methanotrophic bacteria and N2O-reducing bacteria (B1). Soil archaeal community of the two types of fertilization was characterized over the rice-growing period using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. The succession and dynamic of the archaeal population were detected in each of the two treatments before fertilizer application (0 days after transplanting [DAT]) until the rice generative phase (69 DAT). During the period, the archaeal soil community in both treatments was dominated by Crenarchaeota. The relative abundance of putative methanogens was higher in the B0 treatment than that of B1 treatment. Within the methanogenic community, Methanosarcinaceae and Methanomassiliicoccaceae which found as most dominant group in both treatments were presumably to be important contributors to CH4 emission. The application of 50% urea with biofertilizer (B1) changed the structure of the archaeal and methanogenic community in the rice field compared to the application of 100% urea (B0).

Improved soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) varieties resistant to major pest or disease, and in accordance with consumer preferences are important in breeding programs to raise their productivity. Identification of superior promising mutant lines of soybean before releasing them needs multiple environment trials complemented with molecular assay. This study aimed to assess morpho-agronomical and molecular characters using SSR markers of promising mutant lines of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.). A total of 14 SSR markers were used to evaluate 20 mutant lines along with their parental lines and check varieties, and eight different locations were chosen to field evaluation of 11 selected lines induced by gamma-ray. Values of Polymorphism Information Content, allele number, and gene diversity index were high, indicating the great genetic diversity among these mutant lines, and far distant from their parental lines. Phylogenetic tree also supported the distinguishable among gamma ray-induced mutant lines compared to the parental lines. The significant interaction between promising line and environment showed their high adaptability and stable yield in various environments. Biosoy-8 (2.713 ton/ha) and Biosoy-11 (2.631 ton/ha) revealing the high yields lines supported with the molecular information could be potential to be released as new varieties and can direct their efficient utilization for field application or further improvement scheme.

Biodiversitas 20: 2915-2920. Trichoderma spp. have the potential to be used for controlling the airborne pathogenic fungi such as C. gloeosporioides. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antifungal activity of the culture filtrate of five isolates of Trichoderma spp. (T. harzianum, T. viride, T. koningii, Trichoderma PP2, Trichoderma PP3) against C. gloeosporoides causing anthracnose disease in chili. Culture filtrate of Trichoderma spp. was produced from single culture and dual culture techniques. The design was a Completely Randomized Design with six treatments and four replications. The treatments were culture filtrate from T. harzianum, T. viride, T. koningii, Trichoderma PP2, Trichoderma PP3, and negative control (without culture filtrate from Trichoderma spp.). Parameters observed were: the diameter of the colony, colony coverage, conidial germination, and conidial density. The results of this research showed all the culture filtrate from Trichoderma spp. produced by single and dual culture techniques can inhibit the growth of C. gloeosporioides. The culture filtrate from Trichoderma PP2 and T. koningii were the most potential in inhibiting the growth, conidial density, and conidial germination of C. gloeosporioides.

Wildfires are one of the main causes of forest destruction, disturbing forest sustainability. Wildfires are mainly caused by human activities, such as land clearing, wood harvesting, draining, etc. Wildfires could induce the loss of vegetation. This study was aimed at assessing the effect of wildfires on both vegetation biomass and necromass on coastal peatland ecosystems in Sungaitohor Village, Tebing Tinggi Timur Sub-district, Meranti Islands District, Riau Province, Indonesia. Analysis of vegetation and both above and below the ground biomass composition were performed. The approach used a paired sample with 4 replications (n = 4 burnt, n=4 unburnt). The variables observed in every research sites was analyzed using Student-T test. Models were generated and then validated to understand the effect of fires on biomass. The results showed that there was a significant difference in the studied parameters between the unburned area and burned area (P <0.01). Wildfires affected the quantity of living plants (biomass) which was indicated by the fact that biomass is unburnt and burnt areas were in the ratio of 2.67 : 1. The quantity of dead plants (necromass) was greater in the burned plots than in the unburnt plots. All these findings suggest that high intensity of forest fires had occurred in the study sites.

Basal Stem Rot (BSR) caused by Ganoderma boninense Pat is the most important disease in oil palm plantations. The use of biological resistance inducer is a promising alternative disease-control. The research evaluated the potential and mechanism of endophytic Bacillus subtilis as resistance inducer agent of oil palm seedlings to infection of G. boninense. The Experiment was carried out using a completely randomized design consisting of 4 treatments and 3 replications namely of endophytic B. subtilis with four inoculum densities (0, 1011, 1012, and 1013 cfu.mL-1) on oil palm before inoculation of G. boninense. The observation variables were incubation period, disease intensity, growth and concentration of salicylic acid in leaf extract of oil palm seedlings. In addition, the ability of B. subtilis to produce IAA in liquid Pikovskaya medium enriched by tryptophan was assayed. The results showed that B. subtilis was potential as biological resistance inducer agents of oil palm seedlings to infection of G. boninense. The induced resistance was related to increasing growth, salicylic acid in leaf the seedlings and the capability was assayed to produce IAA.

Phytochemical screening and antioxidant activity of agarwood leaves (Aquilaria malaccensis) from two sites in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 1588-1596. Agarwood of gaharu (Aquilaria malaccensis Lamk) has an antioxidant activity which can reduce free radicals. This research was conducted to analyze the chemical compounds of agarwood, and the antioxidant activities from two different grown sites, Laru, and Hutanabolon Village. Ethanol extracts of the agarwood leaves (EEAL) were obtained through maceration method. The phytochemical screening included the examination of secondary plant metabolites, while antioxidant activity was determined by free radicals scavenging activity against 1,1- diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). An observable parameter was the percentage of free-radical-reduction with different concentrations (40, 60, 80 and 100 ppm) and inhibitory concentrations (IC50) value by using regression equation. The phytochemical screening result showed that simplicia and EEAL from Laru grown site contained secondary plant metabolites, such as steroid/triterpenoids, flavonoids, saponins, and tannins, while simplicia leaves of agarwood from Hutanabolon grown site contained alkaloids, steroid/triterpenoids, saponins, and tannins, However, EEAL from Hutanabolon was found to only contain alkaloids. The f antioxidant activity of EEAL from Laru 27.887 ± 0.560 ppm was not different from Hutanabolon 27.807 ± 4.630 ppm. The EEAL from both Laru and Hutanabolon had a very strong antioxidant activity.

Abstract. Widodo W, Sulistyadi E. 2021. Biometrics, distribution, and breeding notes of Savanna Nightjar (Caprimulgus affinis) in several islands of Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 2756-2762. The Savanna Nightjar Caprimulgus affinis Horsfield, 1821, a member of the family Caprimulgidae, is a sexually dimorphic, insectivorous nightjar species commonly found in Southeast Asia, including Indonesia. A least-concern species, Savanna Nightjar has diverse habitats from grasslands to shrubs to high-rise rooftops in the middle of the city. Yet, its breeding habits, particularly in urban areas, remain obscure. The purpose of the research is to discuss the biometric measurement, distribution pattern and notes of the breeding of Savanna Nightjar, through analyzing 50 specimens originating from Java, Sumatra, Billiton, Borneo, and Nusa Tenggara Islands belonging to the Museum of Zoology Bogor (MZB) in Cibinong and through a series of observation. The morphological measurements of specimens include the measurements of the length of the bodies, the wings, the tails, the bills, and the tarsi. One-way ANOVA analysis showed that the length of the body and the tail of Savanna Nightjar in Nusa Tenggara are significantly longer than those of Savanna Nightjar in Java, Sumatra, Billiton, or Borneo islands. The biometric differences could have been contributed to different habitat characteristics. Additionally, it was found the likelihood of breeding habit of Savanna Nightjar in urban areas with that of the countrysides because of the resemblance of semi-natural ecosystems in the city such as artificial rivers, small lakes, and parks to Nightjar’s open landscape natural habitats, which facilitates the breeding habits. Still, the migration of Savanna Nightjar from open country-landscapes to the metropolitan areas remains elusive and requires a more detailed study

Abstract

Abstract. Andriya NN, Hamim H, Sulistijorini, Triadiati. 2019. The phytoremediation potential of non-edible oil-producing plants for gold mine tailings. Biodiversitas 20: 2949-2957. Plants can be used as phytoremediation agents to reduce environmental pollutants including heavy metal contaminants produced due to industrial activities. The objective of this study was to analyze the morphological, anatomical, and physiological responses of four non-edible oil-producing plants namely Jatropha curcas, Ricinus communis, Reutealis trisperma, and Melia azedarach and their ability to absorb and accumulate lead  (Pb) when grown in different concentrations of gold mine tailings. The study was conducted using a completely randomized design involving two factors, four different species of plants and three different concentrations of tailings  (0%, 50%, and 100%). Gold mine tailings caused a decrease in the growth of all species indicated by a significant reduction in plant height, leaf number, leaf area, shoot as well as root dry weight, while it significantly increased green RGB values of leaves. Pb accumulation was detected in the root as well as leaf tissues of the plant-based on histochemical analysis. The treatment with tailings also caused an increase in lipid peroxidation levels as indicated by increased malondialdehyde content in the roots and leaves. On the other hand, chlorophyll and carotenoid content decreased due to tailings treatment, along with the relative water content. Among the four species investigated, R. trisperma was found to be the most resistant species to gold mine tailings based on its ability to maintain growth even during gold tailing stress, which is also supported by principal component analysis.
