Biodiversitas 21: 3898-3909.  Plants that grow in the world have a diversity of names, characters, and growing environments. Likewise, plants that grow around Ciremai Mountain, including the Cimanuk Watershed, are very diverse in species and habitats. One species of plant in this region is Amorphophallus paeoniifolius (Dennst.) Nicolson. This plant is closely related to people's lives. This plant is a species of the tuber that has the potential to be used for various purposes. This study aims to determine the knowledge of the people about the ethnobotany of A. paeoniifolius especially the morphology, folk classification, and habitat with case studies in several villages in Cikijing Sub-district, Majalengka District which is ecologically located in the Ciremai Mountain neighborhood and, based on geography, is included in the Cimanuk Watershed. The qualitative method is used in this research. The data were collected through observation and semi-structured interviews or deep interviews with competent communities by focusing on their diversity. Data were analyzed by cross-checking, summarizing, and synthesizing and were narrated descriptively through an emic and ethical approach. The results showed that the people in the Ciremai Mountain neighborhood, namely Cipulus Village, Cilancang Village, Jagasari Village, and Sindangpanji Village, Cikijing Sub-district, Majalengka District knew names, morphology, and folk classification of A. paeoniifolius. This plant is popularly known as suweg in local name. People's knowledge related to morphology (leaves, tubers, roots, and flowers) in these areas is generally not much different. Related to folk classification, people generally say that suweg has variant based on the color of the tubers and sunlight exposure to the place of growth. The intended variant is suweg with reddish-white and yellowish-white of the tuber flesh’s color. Another classification is the suweg variant which grows in the hieum (shading area) and negrak (open area). Concerning hábitat, the people informed that the suweg grows in the garden and homegarden (specifically in the Sindangpanji village, the people said that besides growing in both types of land, the suweg also grows on the edge of rice fields and ponds). Besides, suweg also grows in hot and cold (tiis) conditions; from the beginning of the rainy season to the beginning of the dry season, which is marked by yellowing and falling of leaves; in various soil conditions (such as red, black, brown or sandy soil); and with various species of plants (except with eurih and areuy,in which the growth of the plant is not optimum).

Abstract. Fugarasti H, Muzzazinah, Ramli M. 2020. Morphoanatomy of three Indigofera species (Leguminosae-Papilionoideae) in Java Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 5531-5538. This study aimed to explore the morphological and detailed anatomical features of the stems, leaves, and roots from three Indonesian Indigofera species. Morphological-anatomical studies of three Indonesian Indigofera species were carried out using embedded microscopic preparations. The anatomical characters of the specimens were observed using a compound optical microscope with magnification 40x, 100x, and 400x. The observation showed the anatomical cross-section of  I. tinctoria stem was rectangular, I. suffruticosa was hexagonal, and I. arrecta was rounded. The tissue structures of Indigofera species, from the outside layer, were the epidermis, thin cortex, secondary phloem (narrow or wide), thick secondary xylem, and conspicuous pith in the middle. Whilst, the corner of I. suffruticosa stem contained thick collenchyma. The vascular bundles were the open collateral. The leaves of Indigofera species are made up of the upper epidermis, mesophyll (palisade parenchyma, spongy parenchyma), and the lower epidermis. The vascular bundles were located in the middle, with five or six segments of the xylem elements and small groups of phloem elements, all in the parallel lines. The primary stele type of the roots is actinostele, cambium activity pushed him aside. The vascular bundle of the roots consisted of a dense and tight secondary xylem composed of thick-walled circular vessels (mostly tightly arranged). Data about the morphoanatomy structure of three Indonesian Indigofera species could complement the novelty of the morpho-anatomy information records obtained by previous researchers.

TA.1, isolated from Gunung Rinjani National Park, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 3837-3842. Lies in the Wallace line, Gunung Rinjani National Park (GRNP) offers unique biodiversity, fungi included. Fungal enzymes have been unceasingly searched and studied for various applications, particularly for biodegradation. Fungal laccase enzyme showed prospective environmental-friendly approach in treating industrial effluent, remazol brilliant blue R (RBBR) which is used as a synthetic dye. This study aimed to explore the laccase-producing fungi from the GNRP, as well as investigate their ability in decolorizing RBBR. The study discovered that the most prospective fungi isolate, molecularly identified as Cerrena sp. BMd.TA.1, produced a high level of laccase (> 2300 U mL-1) and manganese peroxidase (MnP, 300 U mL-1). In the application of this isolate, the laccase showed as predominant enzyme in RBBR decolorization process and the RBBR could be decolorized more than 80% at 24 h reaction. It suggested that Cerrena sp BMd.TA.1 isolate is highly potential as laccase enzyme producer and may be considered for further investigations in its applications for biodegradation, especially of dyes effluent.

Land suitability assessment for Lansium domesticum cultivation on agroforestry land using matching method and geographic information system. Biodiversitas 21: 3683-3690. Lansium domesticum is one of the multipurpose tree species (MPTS) and is commonly found on agroforestry lands in Sumatra. This study aimed to evaluate the actual land suitability classes for L. domesticum and to map the potential land suitability for the species using matching method and geographic information system (GIS). The study was conducted in Sei Bingai Sub-district, Langkat District, North Sumatra, Indonesia. A survey was conducted to collect soil samples based on land units. Land unit information was obtained by overlaying soil map, land-use map, and slope map. Land suitability was evaluated based on the matching method and GIS was used to map the distribution of land suitability. The results showed that both the actual and potential land suitability classes based on matching approach for L. domesticum were moderately suitable (S2) which accounted for 88.95% of total land and marginally suitable (S3) which accounted for 11.05%. Availability of water (wa), erosion hazard (eh), root-zone medium (rc), oxygen availability (oa), and nutrient retention (nr) were the dominant limiting factors in this area. The most difficult constraints to manage were root-zone medium and water availability. The results of this study suggest that the development of L. domesticum in Sei Bingai is possible although it requires some land improvements to deal with the limiting factors.

Abstract. Supmee V, Sawusdee A, Sangthong P, Suppapan J. 2020. Population genetic structure of Blue Swimming Crab (Portunus pelagicus) in the Gulf of Thailand. Biodiversitas 21: 4260-4268. The Blue Swimming Crab (Portunus pelagicus) is an important commercial fishery product in the Gulf of Thailand. To provide a strategy for management, information on genetic features is needed. In our study, the population genetic structure and demographic history of the P. pelagicus living in the Gulf of Thailand were analyzed based on the variation of the nucleotide sequence of the mitochondrial DNA in the control region (mtDNA CR). Ninety-seven samples were collected from 5 sampling sites: Rayong, Chonburi, Chumphon, Surat Thani, and Nakhon Si Thammarat provinces in the Gulf of Thailand. Forty-nine haplotypes were identified and 39 private haplotypes were found. An AMOVA showed no genetic structure among populations. The pairwise FST also indicated no statistically significant difference between all possible regional combinations. The topology of a minimum spanning network revealed a star-like topology that was not separated by geographic structure. The historical demographic analysis revealed a stable population size for a long period and followed by a very recent expansion. An absence of a population structure of the P. pelagicus was possibly caused by a high level of gene flow. The results of this study differ from previous studies that used genetic markers in nuclear DNA. Thus, to clear the genetic structure information of P. pelagicus in the Gulf of Thailand, we suggested that more sensitive markers to detect genetic structure should be used in further analysis.

Short Communication: Rediscovery of Psychotria species, subspecies and varieties collected in the 1990s and new records of Antirhea benguetensis (Elmer) Valeton and Ixora longifolia Smith (Rubiaceae) in Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park, Luzon, Philippines. Biodiversitas 21: 4524-4535. Tagged as the “last great forest” for it possesses the widest remaining tropical rainforest in the island of Luzon, the Northern Sierra Madre Natural Park (NSMNP) in the province of Isabela is worth-conserving. Owing to the species richness and high levels of endemism in the said area, it was identified as a key biodiversity area for conservation and protection. After a botanical exploration in the park conducted from April to August 2019, 89 Rubiaceae species were found dominated by the genus Psychotria. These Psychotria species were then separated from other genera and were morphologically examined and eventually identified. This study, therefore, primarily aims to provide the list of Psychotria species that were collected long before, particularly in the 1990s and still exist in NSMNP continuously battling against the catastrophic activities within the forest. Eight Philippine endemic Psychotria species and varieties were recollected. As to their current conservation status following IUCN criteria, we herein propose these species, except for Psychotria pubilimba, to be treated as Data Deficient (DD) since there is lack of distributional data for these species. Additional surveys are to be conducted on the areas where these species were previously collected. In this way, information on population size and threats to the species can also be obtained. P. pubilimba is restricted to Cagayan and Isabela. Only one mature individual has been found; hence, a Narrow Endemic Species (NES). Being an NES, it was then assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) based on IUCN rules. It is also worth noting that new records of Antirhea benguetensis and Ixora longifolia species were found in the park, particularly in Divilacan, Isabela. The former has been regarded as Luzon endemic, known to be distributed only in Benguet, Ilocos Sur, Rizal, and Bataan. The latter, on the other hand, is mostly distributed in the provinces of Visayas and Mindanao, and only Masbate and Palawan for Luzon. Moreover, this flora has been recorded in other parts of the world like China, India, Myanmar, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam.

Abstract. Yani A, Amin M, Rohman F, Suarsini E, Putra WE. 2020. Profiling indigenous lead-reducing bacteria from Tempe Lake, South Sulawesi, Indonesia as bioremediation agents. Biodiversitas 21: 4778-4786. The pollution of heavy metals by anthropogenic activities in freshwater, especially in lakes, reduces the quality and endangers the existence of aquatic flora and fauna. This happens in Lake Tempe, which is located, in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The study aimed to evaluate the content of heavy metals, isolation, and identify a lead reduction of indigenous bacteria as candidates for bioremediation agents. It began by examining the level of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and lead (Pb) in seven sampling sites of Tempe Lake. Furthermore, propagation and isolation, morphological observation, laboratory-scale reduction tests, and species identification of potential bacteria reduction Pb were performed by using 16s rDNA. The reduction test to Pb was measured using Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS), and the research data were analyzed using One-Way ANOVA with the Duncan advanced method. The results showed that the Cd, Cu, and Pb content of the seven sampling points exceeded the water quality standard Following the Indonesian Government Regulation (IGR) and WHO standards. Pb has the highest concentration among the other heavy metals in the water sample reaching 0.40 mg/L. Four bacterial isolates could grow on Pb-enriched media (isolates A, B, C, and D). The Bacillus form was found in two different species bacteria (isolate A and D), while the cocci shape was found in two other species (isolate B and C). Those all Gram-negative bacteria were observed to be a reduction to Pb exposure within a bacterial medium. Interestingly, these indigenous bacteria could decrease Pb concentration ranging from 7.45 to 3.48 ppm for seven days. Furthermore, the sequencing data showed that the indigenous bacteria (isolate D) had a 99.90% similarity to the Comamonas testosteroni strain S-2 constructed using Neighbor-joining phylogenetic analysis. Therefore, the indigenous bacteria C. testosteroni strain S-2 from Tempe lake may be proposed as a bioremediation agent to reduce Pb the water contaminants.

Abstract. Maroyi A. 2020. Short Communication: Ethnobotanical study of wild and cultivated vegetables in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. Biodiversitas 21: 3982-3988.  Vegetables are an important component of agricultural biodiversity required for providing a wide range of ecosystem goods and services. The current study was undertaken in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa to document wild and cultivated vegetables. Research data were collected by means of interviews and field surveys carried out in different seasons with one hundred and thirty-eight randomly selected participants. During the interviews, we documented information on names of edible vegetables, uses, plant parts consumed, and their preparation. A total of 32 species belonging to 26 genera and 15 families were recorded in the study area. The plant families with highest number of vegetable species were Amaranthaceae, Asteraceae, and Solanaceae with at least four species each. The main uses of vegetables identified in the study area were leafy vegetables (59.4%), edible fruits and tubers (21.9% each), culinary herbs or spices (12.5%), edible seeds (9.4%) and edible stems (6.3%). The species which were categorized as important with relative frequency of citation (RFC) values >0.3 were Brassica oleracea, Solanum tuberosum, Cucurbita moschata, Spinacia oleracea, and Cucurbita maxima. Both vegetable species collected from the wild and conventional vegetables cultivated in home gardens are important to livelihoods needs of the local people.

Abstract. Navia ZI, Audira D, Afifah N, Turnip K, Nuarini, Suwardi AB. 2020. Ethnobotanical investigation of spice and condiment plants used by the Taming tribe in Aceh, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 4467-4473. Communities are inseparable from plants in meeting their daily food needs, especially plants as supplementary food. The aim of this study was to investigate of ethnobotany and economic value of spice and condiment plants used by Tamiang tribe in Aceh, Indonesia. A field survey was conducted in three sub-districts, namely Rantau, Seruwai, and Bendahara, Aceh Tamiang District involved 150 respondents (50 individuals from each sub-district) were randomly selected. A total of 31 spices and condiments plants consisting of 26 genera and 18 families was recorded in the study area. Fruits (36%) are the most commonly used parts of plants for spices and condiments, followed by leaves (16%), seeds (13%), rhizome and flower (10% respectively), bulb (6%), and stem and bark (3% respectively). These species were used for preserving traditional cuisines such as bubur pedas, ikan cang rebong, and anyang. Capsicum annuum L has high economic value. The Tamiang tribe has always preserved traditional knowledge of the use of various spices and condiment plants for traditional cuisine.

Secondary metabolites produced by endophytic bacteria against the Root-Knot Nematode (Meloidogyne sp.). Biodiversitas 21: 5270-5275. Endophytic bacteria live and colonize in plant tissues without causing disease to their plant host. Among several processes, these bacteria can produce secondary metabolites that can help in the defense of plant host against pathogens. This study aimed to identify endophytic bacteria as biocontrol agents against Meloidogyne sp. in tomato plants. Six endophytic bacteria candidates from the genus Pseudomonas, Arthrobacter, Bacillus, and Serratia were isolated from Solanum Lycopersicum, Psidium guajava, Pinus merkusii, Dendrocalamus asper, Albizia chinensis, and Theobroma cacao L, respectively. The average mortality of Meloidogyne sp. by endophytic bacteria was 70,27% to 95,46%. From these, B. thuringiensis AK08 produced compounds of the secondary metabolites such as flavonoid, phenol, tannins, terpenoids, steroids, saponins, and alkaloids. The best result of the average incubation period, number of galls in the root, number of nematodes at the root, and the number of nematodes in the soil on tomato plant were shown by B. thuringiensis. The major compounds in GC-MS analysis of B. thuringiensis were cholest-5-en-3-ol (3.beta.)-carbonochloridate (25.35%). Bacillus thuringiensis not only has rules as bio-insecticide but also has nematicidal effect.
