Abstract. Andreychev A. 2021. Short Communication: Proportion faunal assemblages of carnivorous mammals in geoecological districts of Mordovia, Russia. Biodiversitas 22: 4625-4632. In the forest-steppe area, carnivorous mammals are represented by species of different faunistic assemblages. This circumstance makes the study region a priority since the species of which faunistic assemblages prevail is of interest. Fifteen carnivorous species have been identified in the territory of Mordovia. Among them, the family Mustelidae predominates in terms of the number of species. The species are found in all geoecological districts, but their distribution is uneven. The most notable species in the region are located in coniferous and broad-leaved forests (40%) and species widely distributed in several natural areas (40%). 13% of the total number of noted species belong to the taiga fauna types. The steppe type of fauna is represented by only 7% of the total number of recorded species. For each geoecological region, the fauna features are given, and a list of rare and exciting species is given. The forest-steppe zone to which Mordovia belongs is compared by the fauna of carnivorous mammals with other regions from three typical faunal assemblages.

Exploration of vitamin B12-producing bacteria from Indonesia Eutrophic Lake: A new strategy to improve microalgae biomass production. Biodiversitas 22: 4538-4544. Biofuel producing autotrophs and heterotrophs organisms are mostly found in freshwaters such as lakes. Preliminary research showed that Ranu Grati has a high diversity of microalgae and bacteria. Microalgae are known as one source of biofuels due to the high content of lipid. The growth of microalgae is strongly influenced by vitamin B12, which is synthesized by bacteria. The role of vitamin B12 in the metabolism of algae is mainly as a co-enzyme for vitamin B12-dependent methionine synthase. The purpose of this research was to observe the bacterial diversity based on NGS analysis, to explore vitamin B12 produced by bacteria from Ranu Grati lake, and also to identify the highest potency of vitamin B12-producing bacteria based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The study was carried out by taking a water sample at a depth of 50 cm at five stations. Isolation of total bacterial DNA was carried out using FastDNA Spin Kit for Soil. The metagenomic method of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) was used as an initial study of bacterial diversity. Vitamin B12-producing bacteria was isolated using PYBG agar (phytone peptone, trypticase peptone, lab-lemco powder, bacto yeast extract, glucose, agar). Isolated bacteria were screened for production of vitamin B12. The potential isolates were identified base on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity. The results of the metagenomic study showed that the genus of potential bacteria producing vitamin B12 included Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Propionibacterium, Enterobacter, Escherichia, Acinetobacter, and Flavobacterium. The results of screening with PYBG media obtained 30 isolates of vitamin B12 producing bacteria. Ten efficient vitamin B12-producing isolates were identified as Lysinibacillus fusiformis (isolate G2V1), Bacillus cereus group (isolate G2V25, G2V24, G2V13, G2V9, G2V8), Alcaligenes faecalis (isolate G2V22), Delftia acidovorans (isolate G2V14A) and the genus Delftia (isolate G2V19). The isolate G2V1 (Lysinibacillus fusiformis) was the highest producer of vitamin B12 which was able to produce 33,783 ug/mL of vitamin B12 at 4 days incubation time.

A study of brown-marbled grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus) population dynamics in Takabonerate National Park Waters, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 4298-4307. Understanding aspects of the population dynamics of groupers such as the brown-marbled grouper can provide valuable insights into how to manage grouper stocks effectively. Conducted from February 2020 to February 2021 in Takabonerate National Park waters, Selayar Islands District, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, this study sought to elucidate the size structure and cohorts, population growth rate, total mortality rate, fishing mortality rate, natural mortality rate, exploitation rate and yield per recruit (Y/R) of the brown-marbled grouper. Grouper samples were caught using several fishing gears (i.e., hand line fishing, spearfishing, and trapping) with a total catch of 1042 specimens. The sampled specimens exhibited significant size structure and were classified into five age-specific cohorts. The growth rate coefficient was 0.46/year, with the brown-marbled grouper population tending to exhibit slow growth (K < 0.5/year). The estimated asymptotic length was 109.0 cm. The fishing mortality was higher than the natural mortality, with an exploitation rate of 0.65, indicating that brown-marbled groupers in the waters of Takabonerate National Park have been subjected to extensive and intensive fishing, as also indicated by an estimated Y/R lower than the optimum Y/R rate.

Abstract. Mufidah N, Sugiharto AN, Waluyo B. 2021. Assessment of combining ability in purple corn parents under line × tester mating design using GGE biplot. Biodiversitas 22: 4545-4554. One strategy to increase corn quality is the development of new corn cultivars by incorporating the character of nutritional content. The study aims to obtain information on the combining ability of purple corn lines as well as determine the best parental lines for purple corn hybrid development using the GGE biplot approach. This study used 24 hybrids generated from crossings of 8 purple corn lines with 3 testers, which were crossed using a line × tester mating design. Plant performance was assessed using a randomized block design of three replications. The F-test was used to assess and test the experiment variance. The combining ability of purple corn lines was examined using the GGE biplot method. The result showed that the GGE biplot approach successfully identified the best combiner and combinations generated between purple corn lines and non-purple corn lines. Purple corn lines P1Y1 had the best general combining ability for fresh ear yield and total anthocyanin content, meanwhile, P1Y2 had the best general combining ability in most of the agronomic traits, namely ear diameter, shelled ear weight, number of grains row-1, and as well as total anthocyanin content. These 2 lines were also identified as the best parent chosen in the best combination in this study.

Biodiversitas 22: 4158-4168. Peatlands play an essential role in delivering various ecosystem services, yet in many areas in Indonesia, peat forests have been deforested, degraded, and threatened by repeated fires. As such, restoration efforts need to be done. But these require various considerations, including ecological aspects such as type degradation conditions, water table, species selected for planting, and climates, socio-economic aspects like community's involvement, and policy aspects such as regulations and institutions at national and local levels. This study aimed to analyze peatland restoration strategies in Orang Kayo Hitam (OKH) Forest Park, Jambi using the Strengths, Weaknesses, Threats, and Opportunities (SWOT) framework. The analysis was done by integrating multiple aspects such as policy, biodiversity conservation, and surrounding community participation. Data were collected using virtual ethnographic techniques due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Key informants (i.e., OKH Forest Park Unit area managers, NGOs, staff of national government, and university academics) and selected respondents were interviewed to identify and determine factors considered as internal (i.e., Strengths and Weaknesses) and external (i.e., Threats and Opportunities). This qualitative data was then analyzed using a SWOT approach through the IFE (Internal Factor Evaluation) and EFE (External Factor Evaluation) Matrix. The research findings showed that from 12 internal factors and 11 external factors, efforts to restore peatland ecosystems in Orang Kayo Hitam (OKH) Forest Park had obtained very strong values in the biodiversity aspect. The SWOT matrix analysis showed values of S-W = 0.43 and O-T = 0.16 positioned in quadrant I. This result suggests that the most powerful strategies can be developed aggressively from the factors of strengths and opportunities.

Dynamics of Toxorhynchites splendens population in the Larval phase at a rubber plantation in Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 4915-4922. This study aims to describe a water-filled rubber sap bowl as a habitat for larval Toxorhynchites splendens. The research used a quota drive count method, taking the first 10 rubber sap bowls found in the study area: (i) with larval Tx. splendens, (ii) with other mosquito larvae, (iii) with water but without mosquito larvae, and (iv) without water. The number of larval Tx. splendens was calculated based on the developmental phase and other mosquito larvae present in each bowl. Environmental factors, such as temperature and humidity, rainfall, wind velocity, and duration of irradiation were the additional data. The results of this study showed that the average frequency of On average, over 20% of bowls contained larval Tx. splendens, and the percentage increased in high rainfall. During low rainfall in August and September, Tx. splendens used water-filled rubber sap bowls as breeding places. This study concludes that Tx. splendens can make use of water-filled rubber sap bowls as places for breeding. Each rubber sap bowl contained one or more individuals of instar larvae 2, and the number decreased as the developmental phase continued because of the limited volume of water in the bowl, cannibalism, and the number of other mosquito larvae as prey.

Abstract. Lia M, Rauf A, Hindayana D. 2021. Comparisons of the composition of spider assemblages in three vegetation habitats in Bogor, West Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 244-255. Vegetation structures are known to influence the microclimate and consequently the invertebrate assemblages. This study, therefore, aims to compare the species composition of assemblages of ground- and foliage-dwelling spiders in three vegetation habitats: undisturbed urban forest, oil palm plantation, and cornfield, in Bogor, West Java. To ensure a thorough representation of all spider guilds, spiders were collected using pitfall traps, sweep net, and through a direct search on ground and vegetation from January to July 2016. A total of 2299 individual spiders, representing 28 families and 207 species/morphospecies were collected. The spider species richness, abundance, and diversity were higher in the forest and oil palm plantation, compared to the cornfield. Furthermore, the dominant guild in the forest habitat was orb weavers, while the oil palm and corn habitats were dominated by ground runners. The non-metric multidimensional scaling exhibited that the composition of spider assemblages varied among the three vegetation habitats, with spider assemblages in forest habitat associated with higher RH, while the corn habitat was correlated with high light intensity and air temperature. The indicator species analysis revealed that Tetragnathidae has high potential as indicators of the dense, complex vegetation structure of the forest, while Lycosidae is indicators of the more open vegetation of oil palm plantation and cornfield habitats.

Abstract. Maknoi C, Saensouk S, Saensouk P, Rakarcha S, Thammarong W. 2021. Two new species of Curcuma L. (Zingiberaceae) from Thailand. Biodiversitas 22: 3910-3921. Curcuma aruna and C. pitukii, two new species from northern Thailand, are described, illustrated, and photographed. They are endemic to Sukhothai and Lampang Provinces, northern Thailand, and the morphological characteristics of two new species are compared with their closest species, C. flaviflora, C. eburnea, and C. pierreana. Two new species, C. aruna and C. pitukii are assignable to Curcuma subgenus Ecomata. C. aruna is recognized by leaves ovate with thin chartaceous, fertile bracts 6–12, it’s glabrous on nearly all parts of the plant, flowers yellow and labellum yellow with 2 darker yellow bands in the center. C. pitukii is recognized by bracts 20–40 with purplish white to purple, corolla lobes purplish white to pale purple, staminodes white, and labellum white with an embossed yellow path along the midrib from base to apex. A detailed description, distribution, ecology, etymology, preliminary conservation status, and photographs of two new species are provided. A key to 20 species of Curcuma subgenus Ecomata in Thailand is presented.

Abstract. Sari M, Ilyas S, Suhartanto MR, Qadir A. 2021. Pre-harvest sprouting on high-level seed dormancy of bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea) landraces. Biodiversitas 22: 5617-5623. Bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranea (L.) Verdc.) is an underutilized crop. Therefore, its seed quality is not guaranteed. Pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) on bambara groundnut seeds can be found either due to the unpredictable rainfall or the late harvesting and plants are still in the field when rainfall. Conversely, seed dormancy causes a problem for planting. The objective of this research was to identify seed dormancy and PHS of four bambara groundnut landraces and other related seed characters. Four landraces (Madura, Sukabumi, Brown Sumedang and Tasikmalaya) were planted at the end of May 2017. Seeds were harvested at physiological maturity (130 days after planting) during the beginning of the wet season (early October 2017). The result showed that there were variations of PHS among landraces from 1% to 12%, and variations of seed dormancy rates from 62% to 82%. There were differences in seed color, seed size, tannin content, seed hardness, and imbibition rate. However, these characters could not clearly explain the diversities in PHS and seed dormancy. There was a high genetic diversity within Tasikmalaya landrace because this landrace had the highest PHS (12%) and the highest dormancy rate (82%) as well, although both characters are contradictory. This diversity needs further research, mainly to avoid the disadvantages due to PHS.

Abstract. Koju NP, Chalise MK, Kyes RC. 2021. Pikas and People: Human-Pika (Ochotona) interaction in the Himalaya of Nepal. Biodiversitas 22: 5085-5091. This study examined human-pika (Ochotona) interaction in two protected areas of Nepal: Lamtang National Park (LNP) and Api Nampa Conservation Area (ACNA). We conducted the study between 2012 and 2017 and employed a combination of three qualitative sampling methods: observation of behavior (both humans and pikas), practices, and rituals of the local residents, pilgrims, tourists, and Yarsagumba (Ophiocordyceps sinesis) collectors; collection of folk stories; and focus group discussions with local residents to investigate the nature of human-pika interaction. Based on the collective data, three general themes relating to human-pika interaction emerged: 1) the perception of pikas as a respected entity; 2) effects of anthropogenic pollution on pikas, and 3) pikas as a traditional medicine. In LNP, the pika was respected as symbol of the Buddhist monk ‘Lama’. In contrast, at ANCA, the dried meat of pika was used by local people for traditional medicine. At both locations, there is an increasing human presence resulting in increased anthropogenic pollution. This, in turn, may present a potential risk to the pikas over the long term. Further investigation is needed to address the effects of anthropogenic activities on the pika and to ensure the health and viability of the pika population.
