Knowledge of biodiversity distribution and how climate change may affect species across the Sahara-Sahel is scarce despite it harboring both high biodiversity and a high rate of endemism. As ectotherms, snakes are particularly vulnerable to climate change and susceptible to range shifts and demographic changes driven by climate change. Ecological niche models are a common method for predicting the probability of the occurrence of species and future range shifts induced by climate change. This study examines the probable gaps in the distribution of the white-bellied saw-scaled viper, Echis leucogaster, and the potential influence of climate change on its future geographic range in the western Sahara-Sahel. The currently predicted environmentally suitable areas fitted well with the known geographical range of the species showed relative congruence with the Sahara-Sahel ecoregion delineations and identified areas without known occurrences. In the future, the environmental conditions for the occurrence of E. leucogaster are predicted to increase, as the environmentally suitable areas will potentially experience an increase in their proportion. Future projections also showed that the potentially suitable areas might undergo moderate southward shifts during the late twenty-first century. The results of the present study significantly expand our knowledge on the potential distribution of E. leucogaster and provide valuable insights to guide future sampling efforts and conservation planning for the species.

Biodiversitas 23: 4940-4947. The role of actors in the governance of mangrove ecosystems is one of the main factors in determining the sustainability of mangrove ecosystem management in the Tangerang District, Banten, Indonesia. The research aims to analyze actors' prospective role in the strategy of governance of mangrove ecosystems areas in Tangerang using the MACTOR method. This research is a descriptive case study with an expert judgment approach. The study results show that the central and local governments have an important role in the governance strategy of mangrove ecosystem areas in the Tangerang. The two actors can collaborate with the local community, the private sector, universities, NGOs, research institutions, and high schools. The strategy for the governance of mangrove ecosystems in Tangerang can be done by increasing the role of each actor by encouraging the central government and local governments to implement programs to achieve the most supportive strategic goals, namely the management of mangrove ecosystems based on collaborative management (co-management). The strategy can be easily implemented and get more optimal results by involving the role of the user community, NGOs, universities, local governments, and research institutions where the level of collaboration (convergence) is high to support the strategy.

Anatomical characteristics may serve as diagnostic indicators that are useful for elucidating the identity of a plant species and its ecological adaptation to environmental changes. This study aimed to examine the foliar anatomical traits of Diospyros javanica, in comparison with its widely distributed relatives, Diospyros cauliflora and Diospyros buxifolia, which are crucial for understanding trait variation, taxonomic position, and environmental adaptation. Plant samples were collected from Purwodadi Botanic Garden, National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). Anatomical preparations were made using the paraffin-embedding method. Almost all qualitative variations could act as distinguishing traits among the species. Anatomical traits observed in this study include stomata, cuticle layer, epidermis, intracellular cavity, vascular bundles, sclerenchyma tissue, palisade and spongy mesophyll, supporting elements such as tracheids, mucilage cells, crystal oxalate, and metabolites such as phenolic deposits. Quantitative analysis of stomatal traits showed significant differences for all traits except stomatal density (p=0.18). All anatomical traits of leaf blades are significantly different across the three species, with p value of 0.0. The thinner photosynthetic structures of D. javanica indicate lower growth performance compared to that of its more widely distributed relatives. Research on ecophysiology related to growth rate and biochemical content that support plant adaptation could be conducted in the near future to inform species conservation.

Abstract. Fridayanti N, Widajati E, Ilyas S, Budi SW, Palupi ER. 2023. Phenology of flowering and seed development of jernang rattan (Daemonorops spp.). Biodiversitas 24: 349-358. Jernang rattan has a high economic value due to its resin content in the exocarp, as the raw material of dyes, medicines, and cosmetics. The resin is highest in the immature fruit skin (exocarp); therefore, fruits are harvested before the seed is germinable. As a consequence, regeneration is very scarce, and the species is categorized as a rare plant. This research was aimed at investigating the flowering phenology and seed development of jernang rattan until they reach physiological maturity, when the viability and vigor are at their highest. The flowering phenology was observed based on Biologische Bundesanstalt Bundessortenamt and Chemische Industrie (BBCH), at the inflorescence stage, flowering stage, fruit development stage, and fruit ripening stage. The inflorescence development from flower bud until ready to bloom took 136.4 ±10.9 days for male plants and 141.6 ±16.4 days for female plants. The inflorescence of staminate flowers bloomed longer (29.4 ±2.7 days) than pistillate flowers (15.4 ± 4.0 days). Fruit abortion mostly occurs during the first six months of fruit development, coincides with the nuclear stage of endosperm, and the final seed set is 56%. It takes around 27 months of one reproduction cycle from the appearance of the inflorescence to seed maturity. The fruit reaches physiological maturity approximately at 22 MAA when the seed is of high viability and vigor, and harvesting at 22 MAA is best for seed production. It is recommended to set up a seed production area separated from the resin production area.

Monitoring populations of species is essential for science-driven policymaking. However, monitoring can be a daunting task for threatened and vulnerable species like seahorses. They are often threatened by overfishing and habitat destruction in the marine environment. Since they are considered a flagship species, monitoring populations in Panguil and Murcielagos Bay, which served as the home of the two common seahorses in Mindanao, Philippines, is vital. Fractals naturally occur in nature and hence can be used as possible predictors. Morphometric complexity patterns were investigated in the Hippocampus kuda and Hippocampus comes via fractal geometry to delineate irregular non-euclidean objects. The difference between fractal dimension and lacunarity values was tested between species. The hypothesis states that high fractal dimensions are deviations from the equilibrium state/chaos and, thereby, can be linked to vulnerability. High mean fractal dimension (Da) based on box-counting and coefficient of variation (CV) of the lacunarity method were found in H. kuda (F) and H. comes (F). The observed variations can be attributed to morphological complexity as they have adapted to varied microhabitats. Herewith, fractals can be a fast, easy, convenient, and non-invasive way of monitoring species. The results of the study can support conservation protection measures for the two species.

Short Communication: Cloning, production and responses of the sMTL-13 protein (13 kDa lectin secretion) Mycobacterium tuberculosis against Interleukin 6. Biodiversitas 23: 6208-6212. The Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine protected effect against meningitis and disseminated Tuberculosis TB in children. However, it does not prevent primary infection and reactivation of latent pulmonary infection. Therefore, an effective vaccine is needed to prevent tuberculosis. One of the potentials is the sMTL-13 protein (13 kDa lectin secretion), which causes an increase in interleukin 6 (IL-6) as a proinflammatory cytokine and shows high titers in the serum of TB patients. This study aimed to clone, express and evaluate the sMTL-13 recombinant protein. The research steps were ligation of Rv1419 to pQE-30Xa, transformation to Escherichia coli BL-21, and production of recombinant protein with IPTG induction. Furthermore, immunoreactivity tests with the serum of TB patients and healthy serum using ELISA. The results showed that the PCR product Rv1419 showed a band of 474 bp and white colonies as a recombinant clone of pQE-30Xa-Rv1419. The production of sMTL-13 recombinant protein has been successfully carried out and produces 13 kDa protein. The results of the immunoreactivity test showed that the serum level of IL-6 in patients with active TB was 84.22 pg/mL and the serum level of IL-6 in healthy people was 63.74 pg/mL.

Abstract. Suharjono, Yuliatin E. 2022. Bacteria communities of coffee plant rhizosphere and their potency as plant growth promoting. Biodiversitas 23: 5822-5834. This study aimed to investigate the soil bacteria communities of the coffee rhizosphere and evaluate the potency in supporting coffee plant growth. The soil was collected from the Coffea canephora and Coffea arabica in Malang, East Java. The bacterial genomic DNA was extracted by FastDNA Spin kit while the Illumina platform analyzed the total gDNA. Other samples were isolated using the serial dilution method on Tryptic Soy Agar, Pikovskaya Agar, and Nitrogen-free-Bromothymol Blue Agar medium to isolate IAA-producing, phosphate-solubilizing, and nitrogen-fixing bacteria, respectively. The selected bacteria isolates were identified based on 16S rDNA sequencing. As a result, the Proteobacteria showed dominance at the phyla level, and Bradyrhizobium elkanii was the most abundant species with a not significant different proportion between Robusta and Arabica soil. The quantifying method of the selected isolate showed the maximum concentration, such as S1.6.3.2 isolate producing IAA-hormone at 104.46 µg/mL, W3.5 isolate solubilizing the phosphate at 4.5 µg/mL, and W1.2 isolate fixing the ammonia at 21.54 µg/mL. Those potential isolates, S1.6.3.2, W3.5, and W1.2, were identified as Bacillus subtilis DSM 10, Pseudomonas putida S18, and Bacillus methylotropicus SY2, respectively. Further research shows that those bacteria consortiums can be a candidate as biofertilizers due to helping soil health stimulation and promoting coffee growth.

Abstract. Hewindati YT, Yuliana E, Winata A, Adimu HE, Djatmiko WA. 2023. Mangrove vegetation and fish diversity in Kaledupa Island, Wakatobi National Park, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 1766-1772. The purpose of the study is to analyze the association of mangrove ecosystems with fish diversity at Kaledupa Island, Wakatobi National Park (WNP), Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. The study was conducted around the mangrove areas of Balasuna and Tampara villages. Observations and measurements of mangrove vegetation were collected using quadrats of 10×10 m2. In addition, fish data were collected on the fish catches of fishermen who used a sero (a set net). The mangrove data was analyzed using the Importance Value Index (IVI), whereas the fish diversity was analyzed descriptively and length-weight correlation. The results indicated that the Tampara mangrove was dominated by Bruguiera gymnorrhiza with an IV of 172.31, followed by akkapanda (Rhizophora apiculata) and ongke (R. mucronata) with an IVI of 68.15 and 59.54, respectively. The Balasuna mangrove was dominated by R. apiculata, followed by B. gymnorrhiza and R. mucronata, with IVI of 143.67, 93.25, and 45.84, respectively. A total of 74 fish species were found at the two sites, including 63 species of reef fish and 11 species of non-reef fish. Based on the analysis of the length-weight correlation, it was found that the fish captured around the mangrove were not well-fed. From this result, it is presumed that food availability in the study location is reducing due to anthropogenic activities like tourism and transportation. Hence, it is proposed that periodic monitoring should be carried out to enhance the ecological health of the mangroves to ensure the fishery production services of mangroves.

In Indonesia, the population of banteng (Bos javanicus) has drastically dropped. The last line of defense against the continued existence of this species is provided by conservation areas like Meru Betiri National Park (MBNP). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the banteng's habitat suitability in the MBNP region. The occurrence statistics from 2019 to 2020 collected by MBNP were sent to us. Three categories, i.e., direct encounter, footprint and dung encounter, and camera trap encounter are used to categorize the occurrence data. Eight environmental factors that we thought would affect the appropriateness of habitats and the distribution of banteng were incorporated into our modeling (land cover, altitude, slope, annual temperature range, annual precipitation amount, distance to the river and coastline, and distance to the nearest settlement). Utilizing MaxEnt v.3.4.4, the Habitat Suitability Model (HSM) was produced. In general, four environmental factors have a substantial impact, including; altitude, annual temperature range, distance from the nearest settlement, and the coastline distance to the settlement, distance to the coastline, altitude, and annual temperature range were the most significant variables according to permutation importance (PI) (35.1%, 22.2%, 11.8%, and 11.6%, respectively). According to our final HSM, the MBNP includes 33,891 Ha (65%) of inappropriate habitat and 17,985 Ha (35%) of habitat suitable for banteng. Finally, implementing habitat and population management for banteng in MBNP can use these results as guidance.

Morphological, physicochemical, and phytochemical characterization of Camellia dormoyana (Pierre) Sealy from Vietnam. Biodiversitas 23: 5869-5883. Camellia dormoyana (Pierre) Sealy has been used as a flavor, beverage, and folk medicine. Micromorphological features, physicochemical, and phytochemical aspects of C. Dormoyana have not been reported. Thus, further research is necessary to accurately verify the plants and determine their quality and safety for raw materials. This study aimed to characterize morphological, physicochemical, and phytochemical aspects of C. dormoyana from Vietnam. The results present that the species is easily distinguished macromorphologically by the superior ovary, 5-or 6-carpellate, glabrous, and styles glabrous, 5-or 6-parted, and uniformly fused. Micromorphologically, the structure of leaves and stems have similarities between the investigated species in the genus Camellia. Cork-wart, anisotricytic stoma, and stomatal clusters were found in the lower epidermis surface of leaves. The common presence of calcium oxalate crystals and sclereid cells was observed in the stem and the petiole. All epidermis fragments, parenchymal fragments, starch granules, calcium oxalate crystals, sclereid cells, spiral vessels, and red-brown oleoresin masses are standard components present in leaf powder. The physicochemical parameters of leaf powders all meet acceptable standards. The phytochemical compositions of the leaf extract contain lipids, carotenoids, essential oil, reducing compounds, amino acids, triterpenoids, saponins, tannins, and flavonoids.
