Fall armyworm (FAW) or Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is an invasive pest in Indonesia that cause damage to maize (Zea mays). Farmers for animal feed mainly cultivate several varieties of maize in West Sumatra, Indonesia. Therefore, it is necessary to test the resistance of maize varieties to fall armyworms planted by farmers. Therefore, this research aims to determine the resistance of several observed maize varieties based on their effects on the developmental time of S. frugiperda. The study was arranged in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with five treatments and five replications. The treatments for larvae feed consisted of five maize varieties: Sukmaraga, NK-212, Pioneer 21, Bonanza F1, and Secada F1. The development length from egg to adult and life parameters in the second generation were observed. Results of the study showed that the larval and pupal stages of S. frugiperda in the Sukmaraga variety had a longer development duration than the other four varieties, with the larval stage at 20.38 days and pupae at 11.26 days. In addition, the lowest pupae weight was found in the Sukmaraga variety. The maize varieties affect the length of the larval stage and the weight of the pupae and eggs produced. Based on these results, it can be concluded that Sukmaraga is a variety causing a more prolonged larval stage and lower pupae weight than other varieties. Furthermore, the eggs produced by the second-generation female S. frugiperda adult are fewer than in different varieties.

Biodiversitas 23: 6313-6319. Black Flying Fox (Pteropus alecto), known as Paniki yaki, is widely consumed by the residents of Minahasa, North Sulawesi, Indonesia. It is imported from outside the provinces of Gorontalo, Central Sulawesi, and South Sulawesi. The peak of selling bats in Sulawesi is during Thanksgiving Day and religious holidays such as Easter, Christmas, and New Year. Even though the conservation status of this species, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), is of Least Concern, this species will one day become extinct due to continuous exploration without control. Conservation or cultivation is one of the efforts to preserve this type of bat. Cultivation will be successful when the growth of this mammal is outside the habitat. Therefore, research has been conducted on breeding this animal in cages using five bats. The bats had been taken from the captivity in Wanea Sub-district, Manado city, 58-533 days old. The fruits given as food are papaya, banana, and mango, and the variables measured were the amount of consumption, body weight gain, and morphometry. Furthermore, the data obtained were tabulated and narrated descriptively. The results showed that consumption of P. alecto 1,2,3,4 and 5 fruits were 110.64, 147.86, 192.61, 249.18, and 331.61 g/day, with body weight gain of 0.50, 0.53, 0.96, 1, 17, 1, and 50 g/day. The morphometric growth of P. alecto 1 was total body length 0.10, forearm 0.06, tibia 0.03, ear 0.01 and wingspan 0.08 mm/day. Sequentially, the morphometric growth of P. alecto 2 was 0.11, 0.07, 0.05, 0.01 and 0.12 mm/day, while P. alecto 3 was 0.29, 0.13, 0.06, 0.03, and 0.89 mm/day. The growth of P. alecto 4 was 0.19, 0.02, 0.02.0.01 and 0.89 mm/day, while P. alecto 5 was 0.20, 0.01, 0.01, 0.01 and 0.85 mm/day. In conclusion, the 1st and 2nd P. alecto were in early bone growth, while the 3rd P. alecto was in bone and meat growth, meanwhile, the 4th and 5th P. alecto were in meat and slow bone growth.

A checklist of native freshwater fish from Brantas River, East Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 23: 6031-6039. This study aims to provide information on the freshwater fish species composition of the Brantas River, the second-largest river in Java, Indonesia. All samples used in this study were the caught activities during Fish Resource Survey (form May 5, 2021 to August 20, 2022). Sampling was carried out in four stations of the Brantas River, representing upstream, the Karangkates Reservoir, midstream, and downstream. This work recorded 42 fish species divided into 35 genera and 21 families. Cyprinidae was the dominant family, comprising 12 genera and 15 species. According to the IUCN Red List, most fish species inhabiting the Brantas River have a conservation status of Least Concern (LC) or Data Deficient (DD), except for Rasbora lateristriata which is categorized as Vulnerable (VU). Genera Tor and Neolissochilus are rarely found in Javanese waters. We suggest that the conservation status of these species should be reviewed. Information on habitat use and ecological interactions of fish occurring in the Brantas River are needed urgently to make appropriate conservation decisions and plans. Therefore, we suggest that more collections need to be carried out in the studied river, as well as studies based on eDNA analysis and research incorporating both morphological and molecular data.

Many studies have focused on the ecological and socio-economic benefits of the mangrove ecosystem, yet limited information is available regarding the potential uses of non-timber products from mangroves for creative culinary products. This study aims to assess the production and carrying capacity of raw materials derived from mangrove vegetation to make processed food products using a case study from mangrove ecosystem in Kampung Nipah Mangrove Tourism Area, Sei Nagalawan Village, Perbaungan Sub-district, Serdang Bedagai District, North Sumatra Province, Indonesia. In doing so, we analyzed the species composition and abundance of mangrove vegetation to result in the production potential of raw materials used for culinary purposes. Ten mangrove species were recorded in the studied area with Acanthus ilicifolius, Rhizophora apiculata and Avicennia marina were the most important species at the seedling, sapling and tree level, respectively. The Kampung Nipah Mangrove Tourism Area utilizes three mangrove species as raw materials for food, namely A. marina, Soneratia caseolaris, and A. ilicifolius which are used as raw materials for making mangrove dodol (a sweet toffee), fruit syrup, and crackers, respectively. Based on the abundance of species used for mangrove culinary products, the abundance of A. marina and A. ilicifolius are highly available, while S. caseolaris is scarce. These results imply that the abundance of A. marina and A. ilicifolius is sufficient for dodol and crackers production, yet the abundance of S. caseolaris is not sufficient as raw material for syrup processing. Therefore, it is necessary to enrich the population S. caseolaris to support the production of mangrove syrup.

Soil quality measurement for sustainable soybean yield agroforestry system under different crop rotation models. Biodiversitas 23: 6155-6163. Soil quality is essential for sustaining the soybean yield in an agroforestry system. This study determined the soil quality variables that affect soybean yield under different crop rotation models in the agroforestry system with kayu putih (Melaleuca cajuputi). A 2-year experiment was conducted during the dry season (March-June 2021) and the wet season (November 2021-February 2022) at Menggoran Forest Resort, Playen District, Gunungkidul Regency, Special Province of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. All of the trials during each season were laid out in a randomized complete block design with three blocks as replication. The treatment crop rotation model consisted of soybean planting after fallow (FS), soybean planting after maize (MS), soybean planting after rice (RS), and continuous soybean planting (SS). The observations were soybean yield and 21 soil quality variables. The data were analyzed using analysis of variance, multiple factor analysis, heatmap cluster, generalized pair plot, and standardized stepwise regression. The increase in soybean yield during the dry season was affected by TB, Fe, and N in the soil, while it was affected by TF, Fe, and silt during the wet season. Soil quality and soybean yield can be improved by applying organic matter and soil amendment.

Abstract. Hamza RS, Al-Hashimi AG. 2023. Effect of different drying methods on some mineral elements, amino acids and fatty acids of the fruits of some Iraqi palm cultivars. Biodiversitas 24: 359-369. The current study aimed to produce date palm powder from low-quality local varieties, namely (Dayeri and Zahdi). The dates were dried by three methods (solar, electric and microwave) and the mineral elements of the date powder were investigated. The mineral components in the powder produced by heat treatments increased significantly, although the microwave was the best drying method. The microwave-dried Dayeri date powder had the highest levels of potassium and phosphorus, whereas the microwave-dried Zahdi showed the highest levels of calcium. A discrepancy was observed in the saturated and unsaturated fatty acids of date powder, diagnosed by gas chromatography connected to a mass spectrometer. Fatty acid levels were affected by heat treatments, a decrease in saturated and unsaturated fatty acids was recorded, especially by the electric oven drying method. Amino acids ratio varied between varieties and drying methods; the dates of the Zahdi variety contain the highest percentage of amino acids. The proline amino acid was superior to the other amino acids; the solar-dried Zahdi powder had the highest concentration of proline, while the microwave-dried powder had higher concentrations of leucine and serine. Similar amounts of phenylalanine and threonine were found in Zahdi powder that had been microwave dried. However, the amount of cysteine in that which had been solar-dried was higher. The objective of the current study is to determine some biochemical constituents of the locally considered low-quality dates in southern Iraq. These date varieties have not been investigated before for their nutritional quality.

Vertical profile of culturable bacteria from the Makassar Strait, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 1356-1365. Indonesia's extensive maritime background is a rich biological and chemical diversity source. This diversity has become as source of unique chemical compounds with the potential for industrial development as enzymes, molecular probes, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, nutritional supplements, and agrochemicals. The present study aimed to analyze the community composition of culturable bacteria from three different layers of depth from Makassar Strait using high throughput DNA Illumina sequencing of 16S rRNA. Bioinformatic analysis has rendered 140336 high-quality sequences with an average of 124127 sequences per sample and a mean read length of 428 bp. Results showed that Firmicutes and Proteobacteria were the two most abundant phyla. Taxonomic analysis showed that Firmicutes dominated all samples. Genus Streptomycetes and Psychrobacter occurred mainly in the culture from the surface layer. Species richness and diversity for the bacterial communities at 100 m were higher than those at 5 m and 200 m. PCA plot, NMDS plot, and UPGMA clustering demonstrated that the culturable bacterial community compositions of 100 and 200 ms were highly similar and distinct from those in 5 m. This research discovered microbes with potential as sources of marine natural products, including Streptomyces, Paenibacillus, Bacillus, Psychrobacter, Arthrobacter, Bradyrhizobium, Gemmatimonas, and Acidobacteria.

Biodiversitas 24: 3384-3393. The Dayak tribe in West Kalimantan (Indonesia) consists of 151 sub-ethnics, one of which is the Dayak Tamambaloh located in Temau Village, Embaloh Hulu Subdistrict, Kapuas Hulu District, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. This tribe uses the forest for various purposes, including plants as traditional medicines, which is a form of local wisdom in the community. However, the local wisdom can be threatened with extinction when it is not preserved properly. Factors contributing to the extinction of local wisdom include the influence of foreign cultures, forest degradation due to shifting cultivation, the existence of oil palm plantations, and forest fires. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the use of plants as traditional medicine with a qualitative descriptive approach. The method used was a survey; data were obtained from the key informants. They are knowledgeable about the uses of plants for traditional medicine. Data on medicinal plants were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, documentation, and were then analyzed descriptively and qualitatively. The results showed that the plants used to treat diseases by the Dayak Tamambaloh tribe were 58 and consisted of 29 families. The most widely used families were Zingiberaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Lamiaceae, Poaceae, and Musaceae, with 10, 4, 4, 4, and 3 species, respectively.

Biodiversitas 23: 6180-6190. Forest provides environmental services in the form of provisioning, regulating, supporting and cultural services. However, forest is often valued from its timber products, neglecting its broader role in delivering environmental services especially its role in maintaining ecological functions. Forests in South Ogan Komering Ulu District, South Sumatra, Indonesia have high ecological importance in delivering environmental services, yet these forests are pressured by clearing and conversion into plantations and agriculture. The study aimed to comprehensively calculate the total economic value of environmental services delivered by three forest areas in South Ogan Komering Ulu, namely Gunung Raya Wildlife Reserve, Saka Production Forest and Saka Limited Production Forest. We calculated total economic value by incorporating the use value, which consists of direct use value and indirect use value, and the non-use value, which consists of option value, existence value and bequest value. The results revealed that the total economic value of the three forest areas is IDR 863,868,883,037. In more detail, the use value consisted of direct use value with IDR 354,378,792,460 contributing to 41.02% and indirect use value with IDR 509,309,370,324 contributing to 58.96% to the total economic value. The non-use value is from the option value, the existence value and bequest value with IDR 97,449,120 (0.01%), IDR 65,512,153 (0.01%) and IDR 17,758,980 (0.0021), respectively. Our study implies that forest has tremendous ecological functions which provide a very high economic value and environmental services, where these functions are often neglected.

Assessment of genetic diversity and characterization of distinctness, uniformity, and stability of newly bred sweet potato clones. Biodiversitas 23: 5923-5934. Genetic diversity assessment is vitally important for germplasm management and the assembly of new varieties. This study aimed to 1) assess the genetic diversity and 2) characterize the distinctness, uniformity, and stability of newly bred clones and check varieties of sweet potatoes based on morphological characters. The present study was conducted in the experimental farm of Universitas Nusa Cendana for two cycles (years) in 2021 and 2022, involving 13 newly bred (hybrid) clones and 6 control varieties. The observations were made on morphological characters of leaf, vine, and storage root, including 31 characteristics. The observed characters were given scores based on the sweet potato descriptors of IPGBR and PPVTPP. The scored morphological data were subjected to cluster analysis followed by a Principal Component Analysis to reveal the genetic diversity level. Euclidean index was used to characterize the distinctness, while the variation of the scored morphological data was used to reveal the uniformity and stability of tested genotypes. The results revealed a high genetic diversity of the studied genotypes. The cluster analysis placed the studied genotypes into four clusters; cluster I consisted of only one genotype, cluster II comprised two sub-clusters and 13 genotype members, cluster II comprised two members, and cluster IV comprised two sub-clusters and three members. The first eight principal components were responsible for about 79% of the observed variability. Euclidean distance index revealed that each of the studied genotypes is distinct from others. No off-type plant was observed; thus, each of the tested genotypes was considered uniform. Phenotypic expressions of the studied genotypes were similar over the two growing cycles; thus, each is said to be stable. The newly bred genotypes G16 and G29 genotypes that meet the distinctness, uniformity, and stability criteria based on their highest number of distinctive characters are eligible for registration as new sweet potato varieties, more specifically for their unique purplish white and purple tuber flesh characters.
