Characteristics of Simalambuo (Lophopetalum sp.) wood from Nias Island, North Sumatra Province, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 4193-4201. Simalambuo (Lophopetalum sp.) wood is commonly used for construction materials in Nias Island, North Sumatra Province especially in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that affected the region. However, information regarding the fundamental characteristics of this wood has not been available. Therefore, this research aimed to evaluate the basic properties of Simalambuo wood, such as its physical, mechanical, chemical, and natural durability. The destructive method was used to determine the physical and mechanical parameters (i.e., specific gravity, moisture content, shrinkage, MOE, MOR, and hardness) using a small clear specimen sample under the BS 373 standard (1957). The chemical components of wood (i.e., holocellulose, cellulose, lignin, extractives) were analyzed using a variety of methods, including CRC Press methods, LAP NREL 003 standard, and TAPPI. Meanwhile, the SNI 7207-2014 standard was utilized to evaluate its resistance against subterranean termites. The results showed that Simalambuo wood has an average specific gravity of 0.42 and a T/R ratio of 1.78. Based on its specific gravity, the wood is classified within the strength class III-IV. It also exhibits a reduced cellulose and extractive content, along with a higher proportion of lignin. In terms of durability, it is classified as class IV, implying non-resistance to termites’ attack and necessitating wood preservation treatment for its practical application. The findings of this study suggest the application of this wood is recommended for light construction, furniture, and other functions, but not for heavy construction.

Abstract. Al Khafaji AM, Almansoory AF, Alyousif NA. 2023. Isolation, screening and molecular identification of bioflocculants–producing bacteria. Biodiversitas 24: 4410-4417. Bioflocculants are biological compounds produced by different microorganisms with many applications for wastewater treatment as such become an important product in biotechnology and a consequence to be used in industries. The current study aimed to isolate, identify, and screen bioflocculant-producing bacteria from different sites in Basrah City in Iraq. The production of bioflocculants was enhanced by optimization of various cultural conditions such as (carbon source, nitrogen supply, pH, and inoculum sizes) which were estimated in terms of flocculating activity test. Four wastewater samples and oil- contaminated soil samples were collected. Twenty-one different bacteria were isolated from wastewater and soil. Eleven bacterial isolates showed flocculating activity values of more than 50 %. The results showed that two bacterial isolates were reported as the best bioflocculants-producing isolates with a flocculating activity value of 87.80 % and 81.38 % respectively, these two isolates belonged to Aeromonas simiae and Exiguobacterium profundum which identified by 16S rDNA gene sequencing. Four bacterial isolates were discovered and recorded as new strains in NCBI GenBank with the accession numbers OQ848055 (Escherichia coli strain ANABASR1), OQ848056 (Stutzerimonas balearica strain ANABASR2), OQ848057 (Bacillus jeotgali strain ANABASR3) and OQ848058 (Hydrogenophaga temperata strain ANABASR4). The maximum flocculating activity of 84.49% and 88% was reported for A. simiae and E. profundum respectively under optimum conditions (glucose as carbon source, (NH4)2SO4 as nitrogen source, pH= 7 and 5% inoculum size). The phylogenetic tree was created in the current study based on 16S rDNA gene sequences of bioflocculants –producing bacteria to assess their close relationship and evolution.

Biodiversitas 24: 3951-3959. Lingula anatina is one of the brachiopods recognized as one of the most primitive groups with a fossil record from the early Cambrian period. Although L. anatina has been targeted as an object of biological studies, the information about the genetic variation within species is still limited. The purpose of this research is to identify the genetic variation and population structure of the species L. anatina found in the Aceh northern shore based on the mtDNA Cytochrome Oxidase I (COI) gene sequence. In this study, L. anatina specimens collected from five populations on Aceh's northern shore, namely Krueng Raya, Syiah Kuala, Ulee Lheue, and Ujong Pancu, with complete mitochondrial genome sequences were analyzed and compared with genebank sequences. The total nucleotide base of L. anatina is 657 bp, with 18 haplotypes. Based on the results of a comparison of the distribution of L. anatina in Asia shows that the Japanese population has the highest population structure value compared to the other five populations. The Fst value obtained from this study is 0.7, so it is classified as high and structured. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the correlation between geographic location and geographic distance affects the genetic distance between populations.

Biodiversitas 24: 4470-4484. Some rural West Java ecosystems have a high bird species diversity because they have forests, bamboo talun, mixed gardens, rice fields, and homegardens. Rapid population expansion, illicit bird shooting, forest degradation and conversion, and pesticide pollution have reduced rural bird species diversity. This study examined bird diversity in natural forests, coffee agroforestry, vegetable gardens, and bird hunting. Quantitative and qualitative research were used. The point count approach investigates bird species and populations, whereas detailed interviews with knowledgeable informants are used to study bird hunting. In natural forests, vegetable gardens, and coffee agroforestry, 67 species from 39 bird groups were found. The bird species diversity index in three habitats: vegetable garden (H'=2.59), coffee agroforestry (H'=2.97), and natural forest (H'=2.96). Based on the Sorensen Similarity Index, bird species in in vegetable garden and coffee agroforestry, vegetable garden and natural forest, and coffee agroforestry and natural forest had a similarity index of 31.03%, 22.22%, and 52.05%, respectively. These findings suggest that bird species may prefer coffee agroforestry over vegetable gardens. The coffee agroforestry system can generate complex vegetation canopy stratification with a multi-layered vegetation canopy, resembling natural forest stratification. Illegal hunting of bird species for trade is one of the causes of the decline in bird populations in rural ecosystems of West Java, including in Cijambu Village. The coffee agroforestry provides a habitat for rural birds.

Biodiversitas 24: 4485-4492. Suitable nursery habitat to support populations of juvenile horseshoe crabs is becoming threatened globally. There are currently no formal studies on juvenile populations of the horseshoe crabs (Limulidae) for Brunei Darussalam (Brunei, Borneo). We investigated body size structure, population cohort and ecological distribution of juvenile horseshoe crabs associated with a mudflat on Pulau Bedukang, in Brunei Bay. Seventy juveniles were retrieved during four sampling days covering two seasons and four study sites. Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda and Tachypleus gigas were common, whereas only two individuals of Tachypleus tridentatus were found. Carapace width (size) was similar in the common species and there was no difference in juvenile size between the seasons and study sites. Body weight to carapace width relationships showed that the species grew at similar rates, although C. rotundicauda developed faster, producing 14 compared to the eight pre-migration mudflat instars produced by T. gigas. Species densities were similar, and there was no spatial separation of species or juvenile size across the mudflat or in relation to the mangrove forest edge. Nearest-neighbor (NN) analysis showed that individual crabs were generally dispersed. Their mudflat cohabitation suggests physiological and behavioral plesiomorphies for common optimal developmental salinity and temperature conditions. This study provides baseline information for comparison with other regional studies and for local conservation planning.

Kuntze, Lamiaceae) in Oaxaca. Biodiversitas 24: 5105-5112. Plants play a vital role in the rich tapestry of Mexican culture, serving as medicine, food, clothing, rituals, and construction. Oaxaca is known for its abundance of bio- and cultural diversity, and as such, is home to numerous versatile and beneficial plant species alongside many traditional cultural festivals, including the famous Guelaguetza at the end of every July. Many plants have deep cultural and spiritual significance, and their traditional uses in ceremonies, rituals, and medicine have been passed down through generations. Here, we have studied the ceremonial use of rosa de borracho, or poleo (Clinopodium macrostemum (Moc. & Sessé ex Benth.) Kuntze), in two communities of Oaxaca: Ocotlán de Morelos and Villa Sola de Vega. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 40 community members to acquire valuable and relevant information about this plant and its importance in these communities. In Villa Sola de Vega, where residents are known as soltecos, the rosa de borracho is an essential element of Soltecan wedding ceremonies, which includes dancing Chilenas (traditional folk music) such as the Jarabe de la Rosa (a dance called syrup of the rose). In this particular dance, the Rosa de Borracho is the show's star, and important guests such as the godparents and cooks are gifted handwoven crowns to wear and bundles of the plant to carry. In Ocotlán, the rosa de borracho is used to adorn baskets and other artifacts for a ceremony called La Llevada del Guajolote, and is also gifted to everyone during the festivities. The same plant is also used on a procession before Christmas and New Year's Eve, wherein pilgrims known as roseros journey to the mountain searching for the plant for use in the day’s celebration. In this study, we have documented and described the ritual use of this plant and its cultural significance to these communities. In conclusion, rosa de borracho carries various symbolic meanings and is often included in sacred offerings to deities or spirits or in ceremonies to adorn altars, decorate ritual spaces, and create intricate floral arrangements, all of which lend it cultural significance in Oaxaca stemming from these ritual practices.

Abstract. Morizon, Nurrochmat DR, Maharijaya A, Putra PK. 2023. Developing a sustainable community forest management strategy in the mountainous areas of Tanggamus, Lampung, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 4503-4513. The Community Forest (HKm) program allows local communities to legally manage forests to strengthen their rights and reduce conflicts over forest resources. However, the program has yet to be successful in achieving its goals. This study aims to provide recommendations for HKM management strategies. The research involved surveys, field observations, and literature studies. Respondents were selected using purposive sampling and data analysis applied qualitative methods, including triangulation and SWOT analysis. The study found that the social and institutional aspects of the HKM program were not functioning well, with poor relationships among members of the farmers' group (Gapoktan). From an ecological perspective, there has been a decline in plant species. At the same time, the economic aspect shows that only 15% of members benefited from HKM, leaving the rest feeling its negative impact. The study recommends institutional restructuring, coaching, and capacity building for human resources, implementing agroforestry and organic schemes for coffee cultivation, providing guidance on alternative crops such as cardamom, and optimizing the role of cooperatives within the group. Key players must actively participate in HKM management. These recommendations could lead to the effective implementation of the HKM program.

Abstract. Mahilac HMO, Tandingan JP, Torres AG, Amparado JRR, Roa-Quiaoit HA. 2023. Macroinvertebrate assessment in seagrass ecosystem in Sinacaban Municipality, Misamis Occidental, Philippines. Biodiversitas 24: 5586-5597. Marine ecosystems such as seagrasses are economically and ecologically important in tropical coastal areas like Sinacaban municipality, southern Philippines. This study assessed the macrobenthic species and water quality (e.g., pH, salinity, temperature, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), and total suspended solids (TSS) in three seagrass areas in the municipality. The study showed the seagrass habitats with 40 macrofaunal species from the classes Gastropoda (27), Bivalvia (11), and Crustacea (2), with Clibanarius longitarsus as the most abundant species (77 individuals or 24% relative abundance). The Strombidae family holds the highest dominance within the Gastropoda class, whereas the Arcidae family is the most dominant within the Bivalvia class. However, there is no dominant family within the Crustacea class. Water quality showed pH at 7, 30 ppt salinity, and 28? within their standard limits, while DO (8 mg/L) and TSS (127 mg/L) exceeded their range. This study recorded eight economic important species and five least concern International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) species. Among the three (3) sites, the seagrass area in Libertad has the highest species richness (28), Shannon’s Index (2.92), and species evenness (0.66). The Chao estimation result revealed that Libertad (37.17) and Poblacion (18.5) have lower uncertainty in their species estimates than Colupan (39.60), which has a wider range of potential species richness. The Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) proved that there are species that can adapt to a certain level of environmental parameters, like Angaria delphinus, while Decatopecten radula is one of the species that does not correlate with the water parameters in the study. The findings are critical for biodiversity conservation, ecosystem management, sustainable resource use, and adaptation to changing environments in order to maintain ecological balance and the long-term health of the seagrass ecosystem.

Abstract. Inayah ZN, Musa M, Arfiati D, Pratiwi RK. 2023. Community structure of plankton in Whiteleg Shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone, 1931), pond ecosystem. Biodiversitas 24: 4008-4016. Plankton in shrimp farming can be used to maintain the balance of the pond ecosystem. The purpose of this study is to analyze the plankton community in the whiteleg Litopenaeus vannamei shrimp pond ecosystem. This research was conducted in January-April 2023 and it is a descriptive study using a survey method. The research location is in an intensive whiteleg shrimp aquaculture pond in Probolinggo, East Java. The results showed that the plankton found in whiteleg shrimp ponds consisted of phytoplankton and zooplankton. The phytoplankton found consisted of 4 phyla with 18 genera, while zooplankton consisted of 3 phyla with 8 genera. Phytoplankton phylum consists of Bacillariophyta, Chlorophyta, Cyanophyta and Dinophyta, while zooplankton consists of Arthropoda, Ciliophora and Rotifera phyla. The highest total abundance of phytoplankton was 8,192,370 cells/L, while zooplankton was 55,121 cells/L. The highest abundance of phytoplankton was Oocystis (Chlorophyta) of 8,094,015 cells/L, while zooplankton, namely Euplotes (Ciliophora) was 40,154 ind/L. The index of diversity, uniformity and dominance of phytoplankton ranged from 0.05-1.76, 0.02-0.65 and 0.38-0.99, respectively. Zooplankton has diversity, uniformity and dominance indices ranging from 0-2.03, 0-1 and 0.27-1, respectively.

Abstract. Siwakoti EA, Nepali B, Mandal TN, Baniya CB. 2023. Species richness pattern of aquatic vascular macrophytes along elevation gradients in Nepal Himalayas. Biodiversitas 24: 5179-5190. Aquatic vascular macrophytes constitute an important component of aquatic ecosystems. This study aims to determine the species richness pattern of aquatic vascular macrophytes along elevation gradients (100-4900 m asl) in the Nepal Himalayas. We used available published literature on elevational ranges of aquatic vascular macrophytes in Nepal to interpolate the species elevational ranges, thereby providing species richness estimates for 100 m elevational bands. A total of 113 species of aquatic vascular macrophytes belonging to 66 genera under 35 families were recorded from Nepal. Among these macrophytes, dicots were represented by 21 families, monocots with 10 families and pteridophytes with 4 families. Regarding the geographical divisions, the total number of aquatic vascular macrophytes recorded was 76 from the east, 90 from the central and 67 from the west, conclusively central Nepal showed the maximum number of macrophytes. The highest species richness was contributed by Hydrocharitaceae followed by Potamogetonaceae, Plantaginaceae, Lentibulariaceae and Nymphaeaceae. So far, the functional types of macrophytes are concerned, free-floating species were 15, submerged species were 36, floating-leaved species were 18 and emergent species were 44 along elevation gradients in the three geographical divisions in Nepal. The Generalized Linear Model (GLM) was applied to find out the relation between the species richness of aquatic vascular macrophytes with elevation. It showed a statistically significant monotonic declining pattern with increasing elevation. The occurrence of this model was further verified by aquatic vascular macrophyte richness at every 200 m elevation which converged with the general pattern. The study conducted along one of the world’s longest bioclimatic elevational gradients led to support the monotonic declining pattern of aquatic vascular macrophytes richness indicating the difference in richness pattern among aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. It also emphasizes the importance of conserving aquatic ecosystems with their vegetation.
