Species richness and dispersion patterns of Lepidoptera (Rhopalocera) in the Nuraksa Forest Park, Lombok, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 62-70. Butterflies play an important role in maintaining the balance of ecosystems and pollinators. This study aims to analyze the species richness and dispersion patterns of butterflies from the Rhopalocera suborder in this area. The field survey was carried out from January to July 2023. The sampling site was divided into six areas. Specimens that were successfully collected using a hand net were identified at the Biological Laboratory of Mataram University. During this survey, 1576 specimens of Rhopalocera were recorded. This number consists of 47 species. Several species, such as Junonia atlites Linnaeus, 1763, Junonia almana Linnaeus, 1758, Danaus genutia Cramer, 1779, Hypolimnas misippus Linnaeus, 1764, and Amathusia phidippus Linnaeus, 1763 were found to be new records in the Nuraksa Forest Park area. The habitat types with the highest number of species are the utilization block and the traditional block, with 47 species. The habitat type with the lowest number of species is a special block with only 15 species. However, the highest species richness was found in the protection block, with an R-value of 8.09. The most dominant species is Leptosia nina Fabricius, 1793, and the least dominant is A. phidippus. Each species depicted a varying distribution in the six habitat types. According to the analysis results, it was found that the dispersion pattern of all Rhopalocera species is clustered. The research results themselves contribute to conservation and ecotourism efforts.

Abstract. Indriyatno, Wijayanto N, Batubara I, Supriyanto. 2024. The diversity, ethnobotany and nutrient contents of Dioscorea for post-disaster food security in Lombok, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 553-564. Earthquakes caused damage to infrastructure, houses, and roads in Lombok in 2018. After the earthquake, there was a shortage of food. Adaptation to address food shortage can be overcome by using local food sources, including those from the Dioscorea genus. The study aims to analyze the diversity and distribution, ethnobotany and nutrient contents of the Dioscorea genus in Lombok Island. Botanical explorations were conducted to identify the intraspecific varieties in the form of local types/names complemented with ethnobotanical study through structured interviews. The nutrient contents were determined using a standardized method in proximate analysis. The study found 12 local types of Dioscorea belonging to four species which are used by the community for adaptation after earthquake disaster, namely: D. bulbifera (kentang), D. bulbifera (engal), D. alata (uwi sawa), D. alata (lami), D. alata (uwi kuning ampenan), D. alata (uwi putih ampenan), D. alata (uwi ungu dara kunci), D. alata (uwi putih batu layar), D. alata (uwi ungu batu layar), D. esculenta var. apiculata (surak), D. esculenta var. spinosa (gembili) and D. pentaphylla (buyut). The highest diversity of Dioscorea is found in climate type C3 (8 local types), followed by climate type E (5 local types), climate type D4 (4 local types), climate type B2 (3 local types), and climate type C2 and D3 (1 local type). The local community utilizes the Dioscorea genus in several cultural events including when celebrating the Prophet Muhammad's birthday. The nutritional value of Dioscorea genus is high due to its carbohydrate content (66,09-76,96%), protein content (3.79­-10.84%), fat content (1.70-9.58 %) and fiber content (0.32-6.81%). This study shows the potential of Dioscorea to be used as food sources that are cheap, easy to grow, and more adaptive to different environmental conditions to help post-earthquake communities.

Understanding the impact of munia birds (Aves: Passeriformes: Estrildidae) on rice farming: Behavior, distribution, and bioacoustic parameters. Biodiversitas 25: 186-196. Munia birds represent a significant challenge in rice farming. This study investigates the role of Munia birds (Aves: Passeriformes: Estrildidae) within rice agroecosystems. Utilizing point count observation methods in Desa Rowosari, Jember, across two farming models (organic and conventional), we assessed the behavior, population distribution, and bioacoustic parameters of Munia species. A total of 3820 Munia individuals were documented: 2187 Javan Munia (Lonchura leucogastroides Moore, 1858), 1214 Scaly-breasted Munia (Lonchura punctulate Linnaeus, 1758), and 419 White-capped Munia (Lonchura ferruginosa Sparrman, 1789). Bioacoustic recordings were conducted using the TASCAM DR 60D recorder, complemented by statistical tests in SPSS 16.0 and visual data representations via Matplotlib and Seaborn libraries. Findings revealed that Munias inflict damages ranging from 10.85% to 30% on rice crops. Notably, JM's bioacoustic bandwidth displayed adaptability between organic and conventional cultivation environments (P value=0.0129). In terms of population distribution, SbM has the highest population density on conventional (density=22.38), JM has the highest density on organic (density-32.55). Passing through activity is more observed in both types of organic and conventional management models. Scaly-breasted Munia dominates in three time groups, both in the morning (x ?= 224.75), mid day (x ?= 163.75), and afternoon (x ?= 198.25). However, PCA depiction indicates that the activity of passing through is dominated by JM.  JM and SbM are depicted gathering in the center, indicating a similar average relationship between populations. While Munias pose potential threats as pests, their absence could surge insect populations, underscoring their ecological significance. This study accentuates the importance of an informed management strategy, considering Munia's multifaceted impact on agroecosystems.

First microphological and molecular parasitological survey of Benedenia in humpback grouper (Cromileptes altivelis) of Lampung and Situbondo, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 24: 6858-6867. Capsalid monogenean infections, such as Benedenia, affect grouper aquaculture production. Benedenia will cause lesions and skin damage which will cause fish prices to drop. Secondary infection from bacteria, viruses, and fungi by Benedenia triggers a slow growth rate and even mortality. Benedenia infection on grouper has been conducted in Indonesia, specifically in this study in Lampung and Situbondo. However, molecular identification of this parasite is still lacking. This study aims to determine the microscopic and molecular characteristics of Benedenia from the Hurun Bay waters of Lampung and the North Coast of the Java Sea, Situbondo. The main parameters observed in this study were DNA base sequence, morphology, and phylogenetic tree. Benedenia from Lampung (637 bp) and Situbondo (741 bp) in this study was confirmed by the morphological and molecular close as Benedenia sargocentron with nucleotides. Interestingly, the similarity was less than 98% with B. sargocentron with accession ID JN797597.1 (similarity of 97.15% from Lampung and 86.33% from Situbondo). It could be indicated as a new species of Benedenia. The prevalence of Benedenia in Lampung was 90%, while Situbondo showed 80% with 3 parasite/fish intensity for each location. The outcome of this study is the characteristics of Benedenia from Lampung and Situbondo were similar to B. sargocentron according to morphological and molecular identification. This is the first report of B. sargocentron from Lampung and Situbondo since no molecular identification has been done in those places to confirm their species. Further research by another molecular target apart from 28S rRNA should be needed to identify this parasite more accurately.

Influence of local potential plant biodiversity as green manure on soil total N, N uptake, and chlorophyll content of rice plants. Biodiversitas 25: 1655-1662. Continuous use of chemical fertilizers in the agricultural sector causes several problems. One of several solutions that can be offered is using green manure, which could restore soil fertility and be way more sustainable for the environment. A few criteria for plants to be made into green manure are having a fast decomposition process and a low C/N ratio. This research aims to discover local potential green manure based on nutrient content and response to rice plants' soil total N, N uptake, and chlorophyll content. This research used the experiment method with a single factor Randomized Completely Block Design. There were 10 treatments with 3 replications, namely P0: control; P1: NPK 200 kg/ha; P2: Rice straw 10 tons/ha; P3: Chromolaena 10 tons/ha; P4: Ipomoea 10 tons/ha; P5: Eichhornia 10 tons/ha; P6: NPK 100 kg/ha + Rice straw 5 tons/ha; P7: NPK 100 kg/ha + Chromolaena 5 tons/ha; P8: NPK 100 kg/ha + Ipomoea 5 tons/ha; P9: NPK 100 kg/ha + Eichhornia 5 tons/ha. The results showed that Chromolaena, Ipomoea, and Eichhornia have the potential to be developed as green manure because they have high N nutrient content and low C/N ratio. These three green manures can balance the NPK fertilizer and significantly increase soil total-N content, N uptake, and chlorophyll levels in rice plants. They also provide N nutrients, N uptake, and chlorophyll levels in rice plants.

Benthic macroinvertebrates as bioindicators to detect the level of water pollution in the upstream segment of Brantas River Watershed in Malang, East Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 632-643. The Brantas River is the second longest river on the island of Java after the Bengawan Solo River. The current condition of the Brantas River is facing a worrying decline in water quality due to community activities in the surrounding area. This decline can have a negative impact on both aquatic biota and community welfare. To assess water quality, one method involves the use of biological indicators, specifically benthic macroinvertebrates. The objective of this research is to assess the water quality upstream of the Brantas River by using benthic macroinvertebrate as bioindicators. The assessment is based on the community structure, Biological Monitoring Working Party-Average Score Per Taxon (BMWP-ASPT) method and physico-chemical water parameters. This research was conducted at 10 sampling stations with 5 stations located in Batu City and 5 stations located in Malang City. The benthic macroinvertebrate result consists of 8 classes, 53 families. namely Bivalves (2 families), Clitellata (2 families), Gastropoda (5 families), Hirudinea (1 family), Insecta (35 families), Malacostraca (4 families), Oligochaeta (2 families), Polychaeta (1 family), and Turbellaria (1 family). The abundance of macroinvertebrates ranged from 181-2879 individuals/m2, while the diversity index ranged from 0.563-2.988. The evenness index ranged from 0.208-0.870, while the Simpson dominance index ranged from 0.061-0.799. The ASPT range of the upstream segment of Brantas River was found to be between 2.80-6.19, indicating a variation in water conditions from poor to excellent. The physico-chemical water as supporting parameters is still optimal, except for ammonia, total organic matter, and total dissolved parameters that exceed the quality standard. The results of this research show that based on benthic macroinvertebrates as bioindicators, the BMWP-ASPT index and water quality parameters as support, upstream to downstream the Brantas River watershed in Malang City has poor to very good quality. This is due to anthropogenic activities in land use which can disrupt the quality of aquatic ecosystems. Therefore, local governments need to manage waterfall ecosystems well by controlling human activities around them.

Estrous characteristics and steroid concentrations in Aceh cows (Bos indicus) after estrus synchronization using prostaglandin F2a. Biodiversitas 25: 322-328. This study aims to determine the estrous characteristics and steroid concentrations during estrus in Aceh cattle after estrus synchronization using prostaglandin F2a. This study involved 9 Aceh cows with good reproductive status, not pregnant, and has shown at least 2 regular cycles, which were divided into 3 treatment groups. The first group (GI) received a single injection treatment, the second group (G2) received a double injection treatment with an interval of 10 days, and the third group (G3) was also treatment double injection with an interval of 12 days. Symptoms and responses to estrus were reported descriptively, and the data collected on onset, intensity, and duration of estrus were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance followed by Duncan's test. The results showed that estrus symptoms were almost similar and estrus response was 100% in all three treatment groups. The onset of estrus in G1, G2, and G3 did not differ significantly (P>0.05) with values of 68.00±18.33, 60.00±0.00, and 72.00±24.00 hours, respectively. The intensity of estrus in G1, G2, and G3 showed significant differences (P<0.05) with scores of 3.00±0.00, 5.00±0.00 and 4.33±1.15, respectively. The duration of estrus showed no significant difference in G1, G2, and G3 (P>0.05) with durations of 32.00±18.33, 72.00±0.00, and 52.00±38.57 hours, respectively. The concentrations of estradiol and progesterone obtained also showed no significant differences (P>0.05) in G1, G2, and G3, with respective concentrations of 91.67±24.77, 132.00±23.15, 89.47±24.19 pg/mL and 0.98±0.59, 0.86±0.18, 1.00±0.17 ng/mL. In conclusion, estrus synchronization with PGF2a single injection and double injection in Aceh cattle was found to have 100% estrus response. However, PGF2a with double injection showed higher estrus intensity compared to single injection. In Aceh cows, the recommended protocol for estrus synchronization using PGF2a is double injection.

Abstract. Liguez CGO, Tabugo SR. 2023. Antibacterial activity of sea hare (Dolabella auricularia) egg string extracts against potentially pathogenic bacteria. Biodiversitas 24: 6675-6683. Pharmaceutical industries now recognize the vast variety of ocean organisms, each possessing distinct biological characteristics. Sea hares, for example, are marine organisms that use bioactive chemicals to defend against predators, including their eggs. To explore the potential antibacterial properties of sea hare species (Dolabella auricularia) found in Pujada Bay, Philippines, egg strings were collected and extracted using hexane and methanol solvents. The antibacterial activity of each fraction was then determined through Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) testing against four potentially pathogenic bacteria, two gram-positive strains (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis) and two gram-negative strains (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa). The broth microdilution method was employed to assess the antibacterial activity of Dolabella auricularia egg strings. The results revealed the MIC values for the four bacterial strains. The hexane extracts of both extract 1 and extract 2 exhibited a MIC of 0. 23 and 0.33 mg/mL and a MIC of 0.52 and 0.125 mg/mL against P. aeruginosa, respectively. The methanolic extracts (1 and 2) displayed a MIC of 1.46 and 2.83 mg/mL against E. coli and an even more potent MIC of 1.33 and 0.79 mg/mL against P. aeruginosa. In the case of B. subtilis, the hexane extracts (1 and 2) had a MIC of 1.5 and 0.54 mg/mL, while the methanolic extracts (1 and 2) exhibited a MIC of 1.17 mg/mL and 0.83 mg/mL. Lastly, against S. aureus, hexane extracts (1 and 2) suppressed the growth with a MIC of 0.77 mg/mL and 0.25 mg/mL, respectively, while both methanolic extracts (1 and 2) demonstrated a MIC of 3.33 mg/mL. These findings showcase the promising antibacterial activity of Dolabella auricularia egg string extracts and highlight their potential for further investigation and development in the pharmaceutical field.

Abstract. Ramos GB, Panduyos JB, Caray RE, Bacquial LS. 2024. Unveiling coastal diversity: An inventory and conservation report of beach forest flora of Surigao del Sur, Philippines. Biodiversitas 25: 421-430. Coastal greenbelts, comprise mangroves and beach forest trees, are pivotal in disaster mitigation and climate change resilience. Despite the evident importance of these coastal ecosystems, they are often overlooked in research due to a lack of comprehensive data on species community structure and their broader ecological importance. Hence, this present study was conducted to document beach forests composition and conservation status in selected coastal municipalities of Surigao del Sur, Philippines. The study was conducted in five sampling locations, namely, La Paz, Bil-at, Balibadon, Poblacion Cagwait and Arangasa Island. At each sampling location, a 2 km transect line, parallel to the beach’s shoreline, was established having a 100 square meter sampling plots spaced 50m apart. Beach species frequency counts, percentages, and diversity indices were quantified. The study documented 27 beach forest species belonging to 21 families and 25 genera with the dominant species being Crinum asiaticum, Cocos nucifera, Millettia pinnata, Timonius compressicaulis, and Terminalia catappa. Both Arangasa Island and La Paz beach forests have the highest species diversity (H’ = 2.04); however, Cagwait has the highest species richness (Margalef = 2.34). This study has potential to significantly contribute in addressing existing data gap regarding beach forest species in the Philippines. With the looming threat of extinction due to infrastructural development and anthropogenic activities, the study's outcomes stand as an urgent call to action; thus, a collaborative endeavor of Local Government Units, academicians, and community for conservation and protection before these species succumb to the threat of extinction.

The seed coat colors of soybeans are yellow, black, green, brown, or bicolor, and in Indonesia, black seed coat color is for used soy sauce. Our black soybean mutation breeding research started with irradiating soybean cultivar Detam 3 with gamma rays at 160, 208, 256, 304, 352, 400, 448, 496, 544, and 592 Gy. Genotypes were selected from M1 (first generation) to M5 (fifth generation) based on saline and/or nonsaline soil productions. This research aims to evaluate the growth and production of sixth-generation (M6) and seven-generation (M7) black soybean mutant genotypes. The research was conducted in Karangharjo Village, Pulokulon Sub-district, Grobogan District, Central Java Province, Indonesia. The plant material was three genotypes of M6 black soybean mutants (BSMG VQ 05-256/1-6-2-28, BSMG VQ 05-400/1-2-2-6 and BSMG VQ 05-256/1-2-9-29), four genotypes of M7 black soybean mutants (BSMG VQ 06-256/1-6-2-28, BSMG VQ 06-400/1-2-2-6 and BSMG VQ 06-256/1-2-9-29 and BSMG VQ 06-256/1-4-2-21) and three cultivar checks (Detam 1, Detam 3/parent variety and Detam 4 variety). The parameters measured consist of plant growth, components, and production. All data collected were subjected to statistical Analysis of Variance (ANOVA); if significantly different, it continued by Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT). The results showed that the genotype treatment affected all observed characters except plant height. Selected lines based on the number of leaves, number of pods, number of seeds, weight of 100 seeds, weight of seed, and production were BSMG VQ 05-256/1-2-9-29, BSMG VQ 05-256/1-2-9-29 and BSMG VQ 06-256/1-4-2-21. These selected genotypes provided the prospective source of soy sauce material and needed to examine its stability at different locations (multilocation test).
