Biodiversitas 27 (2): d270228. https://doi.org/10.13057/biodiv/d270228. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) continues to pose a major global health threat and has driven the exploration of under-studied ecosystems, including mangrove forests, as sources of bioactive microorganisms. Therefore, this study aimed to isolate and identify endophytic fungi associated with mangrove roots and to evaluate the antibacterial activity and GC-MS-based metabolite profile of a selected isolate against multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial pathogens. The isolate was identified based on morphological characteristics and confirmed by ITS rDNA sequencing, showing 100% similarity to Talaromyces adpressus. Crude ethyl acetate extract obtained from submerged fermentation culture was screened for antibacterial activity against multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Acinetobacter baumannii. Agar disc diffusion assays showed measurable inhibition zones of 13.22±1.13 mm (MRSA), 10.41±1.54 mm (ESBL-E. coli), 10.05±1.85 mm (ESBL-A. baumannii), and 9.98±0.11 mm (ESBL-K. pneumoniae). However, broth microdilution assays revealed minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations exceeding 512 µg mL⁻¹ for all tested strains, indicating weak antibacterial potency of the crude extract in liquid culture. GC-MS profiling tentatively identified ten major metabolites, including fatty acids (lauric, myristic, palmitic, oleic acids), diketopiperazines [cyclo(L-Pro-L-Val), cyclo(Phe-Pro)], phenethyl alcohol, phenylacetic acid, 2,4-di-tert-butylphenol, and ergosterol, which have been reported to possess antimicrobial or signaling-modulatory properties. Overall, these findings expand the ecological record of T. adpressus in mangrove ecosystems and provide preliminary antibacterial screening and chemical profiling data, highlighting the need for further fractionation and compound-level validation in future studies. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of isolation and characterization of endophytic fungus T. adpressus A1RA from roots of R. apiculata Blume collected from the Ngurah Rai Mangrove Forest, Bali, Indonesia.

Kitanglad Natural Park in Bukidnon, Mindanao, are increasingly dominated by monoculture plantations that threaten native biodiversity. The Binahon Agroforestry Farm (BAFF), a privately managed multi-strata agroforest, represents an alternative land-use model that integrates production and ecological stewardship. This study assessed the plant community composition, diversity, and structure of BAFF using 34 quadrats with size 20 m × 20 m each (total sampling area = 13,600 m²) and 800 m of transect sampling. A total of 165 plant species belonging to 65 families were recorded, with Fabaceae, Moraceae, Asteraceae, Euphorbiaceae, and Myrtaceae as the most represented families. Trees (67 species) were the dominant growth form, followed by herbs (35) and shrubs (33). Nine endemic (5.5%) and nine threatened species (5.5%) were documented, highlighting the ecological value of the site. The Shannon-Wiener index (H′ = 4.08) and Pielou’s evenness index (J = 0.80) indicated a diverse and almost balanced plant community, falling within the range reported for secondary forest ecosystems in previous studies in Mindanao. Species with the highest importance values were Pinus kesiya, Acacia mangium, Eucalyptus sp., Rubroshorea negrosensis, and Vitex parviflora. The coexistence of native, endemic, and cultivated species suggests a structurally heterogeneous vegetation that promotes ecological functions within a managed landscape. Overall, the findings indicate that well-managed agroforests such as BAFF may serve as valuable components of landscape-level conservation, supporting biodiversity within productive land-use systems and potentially informing agroforestry-based planning and policy in Mindanao.

Biodiversitas 27 (3): d270310. https://doi.org/10.13057/biodiv/d270310. Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) or Fall Armyworm (FAW) is an invasive pest that attacks corn plants. Synthetic insecticides are commonly used for pest control but are not environmentally friendly, prompting the need for alternatives such as botanical insecticides. Sleeping grass (Mimosa pudica), nutgrass (Cyperus rotundus), Bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon), wild sage (Lantana camara), and goatweed (Ageratum conyzoides) are invasive weeds in agroecosystems that have the potential to be used as botanical insecticides. This study aims to determine the bioactivity of the invasive weed extracts against FAW. Methods using bioassay in the laboratory. For each type of weed extract, an experiment was carried out with five levels of extract concentration (each extract using a different range) and two controls, which were repeated four times with ten individual 3rd instar larvae of FAW per repetition. The results showed that five invasive weed extracts have the potential to be used as insecticides, caused an increase in larval mortality (>70%), decreased the feeding activity (>50%), caused weight reduction (>50%), and reduced the percentage of successful development of pupae and adults (<15%). The LC50 values from the smallest to highest at 144 h after application were for C. dactylon aerial parts extract (6%), C. rotundus tuber extract (16%), A. conyzoides leaf extract (22%), L. camara leaf extract (49%), and M. pudica leaf extract (53%). For LT50 of M. pudica at a concentration of 70%, C. rotundus at a concentration of 50%, C. dactylon at a concentration 29%, L. camara at a concentration of 60%, and A. conyzoides at a concentration of 41% were 90, 57, 73, 81, and 42 h, respectively.

Indonesia’s karst landscapes support distinctive biodiversity but remain highly vulnerable to habitat degradation, weak conservation governance, and limited livelihood options for surrounding communities. This study examines how community-based eco-edutourism can link biodiversity conservation and community empowerment in the Bukit Cubung karst area, Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta, using a participatory action research approach. The intervention combined biodiversity inventory (flora and fauna surveys across four microhabitats), ecological literacy training for local participants, and facilitation of community-based tourism governance. Flora sampling across ten 10 m × 10 m plots and transects documented 23 plant species, while fauna surveys recorded 17 non-avian species, yielding Shannon-Wiener diversity values of H’ = 2.71 for flora and H’ = 2.43 for fauna, indicating moderately high ecological heterogeneity in the study site. Ecological literacy among 20 community participants increased from a mean pre-test score of 42.1% to 87.8% in the post-test, reflecting substantial improvements in knowledge of local species and karst ecosystem functions. Program implementation supported the formation of a village eco-edutourism committee, the development of simple visitor management rules, and the use of the biodiversity inventory as interpretive material for guiding and environmental education activities. These findings suggest that eco-edutourism, when grounded in site-specific biodiversity data and participatory learning, can strengthen local ecological knowledge, foster shared responsibility for conservation, and contribute to community empowerment in fragile karst landscapes.

The shape of pepper (Capsicum spp.) fruit significantly influences consumer preferences, which, in turn, affects its commercialization and economic value. In nature, peppers exhibit a wide range of fruit shapes that may be caused by genetic or environmental factors. Information confirming the causal factors underlying this variation, particularly at the molecular level, remains limited. Molecular markers are essential tools for assessing genetic diversity within germplasm. This research aims to identify the genetic profiles of pepper with various fruit shapes using RAPD and SSR markers. The findings will be beneficial for future studies concerning the genetic mechanisms underlying fruit shape in peppers. The study examined ten Capsicum spp. genotypes characterized by elongated, triangular, and blocky fruit shapes. A total of nineteen RAPD and seventeen SSR markers were employed for analysis. The data were processed using the UPGMA method based on Jaccard’s similarity coefficient for RAPD, and Euclidean similarity coefficient for SSR. The results from both RAPD and SSR markers indicated polymorphism in alleles. Specifically, OPU-10 and Chr12SSR10 show higher polymorphism, as indicated by PIC values. The dendrogram generated from both markers demonstrated that the clustering was closely related to fruit morphology, particularly in distinguishing elongated, triangular, and blocky fruit shapes. The RAPD and SSR markers are reliable for identifying genetic diversity in Capsicum spp. Specifically, the OPU-10 and Chr12SSR10 markers may have potential for future studies on genetic diversity related to fruit morphology.

Yemen faces serious biodiversity challenges; documenting endemic and near-endemic taxa supports its strategic conservation goals. This study reports and catalogs the endemic and near-endemic plant species in Abyan, emphasizing their life forms, life spans, growth forms, and phytogeography. Vegetation surveys were conducted for two successive spring seasons in 2023 and 2024. The field survey used a timed exploratory meander technique using non-plot sampling to maximize detection of taxa in inaccessible areas of the study site. Eight mountain peaks were selected to reflect the geographic extent of the study region. Fifty-seven endemic and near-endemic taxa, representing 21 plant families, were recorded, of which 23 are endemic and 34 are near-endemic. Aloe serriyensis, Kleinia deflersii, and Stapelia × anemoniflora are endemic to Jabal Al-Arays, located in the Khanfir District of Abyan. The floristic study revealed that Apocynaceae and Asteraceae were the most abundant families. Forty-one genera were recorded, with Aloe being the most species-rich genus. Perennial plants were more abundant than annuals in the study area, reflecting their greater tolerance to arid conditions. Subshrubs represented the dominant growth form, surpassing trees, shrubs, and herbs. Among the five identified life forms, chamaephytes were the most dominant. Phytogeographically, the Sudano-Zambezian chorotype accounts for more taxa than the Saharo-Arabian/Sudano-Zambezian, which is consistent with Yemen's geography and best represents hot desert habitats. Jabal Al-Arays comprises 57.9% of the total recorded taxa, including 13 near-threatened taxa and 1 critically endangered species. Thus, an urgent conservation plan should be implemented in Jabal Al-Arays through habitat protection and grazing control to safeguard endemic taxa under threat. Sustaining mountain biodiversity under increasing anthropogenic pressures and climatic change will require coordinated efforts among scientists, the governmental sector, and local communities, supported by predictive modeling to anticipate future biodiversity loss at high elevations in the coming decades.

The red snapper (Lutjanus malabaricus) is a demersal fish species of high economic value in Indonesia, including in Saleh Bay, Sumbawa, West Nusa Tenggara. Increasing fishing pressure has raised concerns regarding its stock status and sustainability. This study aims to assess the stock condition of L. malabaricus in Saleh Bay as a basis for sustainable fisheries management. The analysis was conducted using the Length-Based Spawning Potential Ratio (LBSPR) model applied to 11,945 individuals caught by small-scale fishers between 2017 and 2024. Data were obtained from the Marine and Fisheries Agency of West Nusa Tenggara Province and the Scientific Forum for Sustainable Fisheries Management (FIP2B), with access granted through a formal Data Sharing Agreement authorized by both institutions. The LBSPR model was run assuming a natural mortality to growth ratio (M/K) of 1.47 and logistic selectivity. Results showed an average fish length of 53.88 cm. Growth parameters were estimated with an asymptotic length (L∞) of 85.56 cm, a growth coefficient (K) of 0.22 year⁻¹, natural mortality (M) of 0.323 year⁻¹, and a theoretical age at zero length (t₀) of -0.5711 years. Length at first maturity (Lm) was 45.37 cm, while length at first capture was slightly higher at 47.26 cm. Spawning Potential Ratio (SPR) values fluctuated between 0.21 and 0.38 throughout the study period and declined steadily to 0.21 in 2024. In this study, stock status was interpreted using a precautionary reference point of SPR: 0.30. These results indicate that the red snapper stock in Saleh Bay has transitioned from lightly exploited to fully exploited conditions and is currently at risk of reduced reproductive potential. The findings highlight the need to strengthen management implementation, particularly through enforcement of minimum size regulations and improved control of fishing pressure, to support precautionary and adaptive management of red snapper fisheries in Saleh Bay.

Biodiversitas 27 (1): d270119. https://doi.org/10.13057/biodiv/d270119. Accurate estimation of aboveground biomass is essential for carbon accounting and sustainable management of teak (Tectona grandis) plantations, yet traditional allometric equations may not capture nonlinear variation in stem form and crown biomass allocation. We developed and evaluated generalized additive models (GAMs) incorporating internal stem geometry (mid-height and mid-diameter) using destructive sampling of 30 trees (n = 30) from managed teak plantations in northern Thailand. Model performance was assessed using leave-one-out cross-validation (LOOCV) and compared with a conventional log-linear DBH-only allometric model. The GAM substantially outperformed the traditional allometric model, reducing prediction error by approximately 44% (RMSE = 28.47 kg vs. 51.28 kg) and increasing predictive accuracy (R² = 0.975 vs. 0.918). GAM smoothers revealed interpretable nonlinear effects for DBH and mid-height, while mid-diameter was penalized toward linearity. Residual diagnostics indicated adequate model fit, and sensitivity analysis showed that GAM performance was robust to changes in smoother complexity. Branch biomass exhibited lower deviance explained but moderate LOOCV accuracy. Leaf biomass showed low predictability due to inherently high biological variability. Monte Carlo simulations propagated tree-level uncertainty to plot-level biomass. The GAM produced substantially narrower 95% confidence intervals (0.91-1.85 t ha-¹) than the allometric model (1.76-4.14 t ha-¹), indicating improved stability for operational carbon assessments. These results demonstrate that flexible modeling approaches incorporating internal stem geometry can significantly enhance both accuracy and precision of teak biomass estimation. Generalized additive models provide a robust alternative to traditional allometries, particularly where nonlinear stem structure influences biomass allocation, and offer clear advantages for plantation-scale carbon accounting and sustainable forest management.

Mangroves are an ecosystem of considerable ecological importance, situated in the coastal tidal zone and characterized by an overgrowth of plant species capable of surviving in inundated seawater zones. A comprehensive study of the Leuweung Sancang mangrove site reveals the presence of mangrove flora, though further study is necessary to describe the species diversity of this ecosystem fully. This study aimed to analyze the extent of mangroves, stand density, and floristic composition across seven mangrove blocks (Cibaluk, Cikabodasan, Cikolomberan, Cipalawah, Sakad, Cipunaga, and Cibako). Field surveys were conducted using block-based exploration combined with radius-based sampling, and voucher specimens were deposited in the Herbarium of Biology at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. Spatial boundaries were mapped using GPS-based KML conversion to GIS shapefiles. Species diversity was assessed using the Shannon-Wiener index (H′) and Pielou’s evenness (E), as well as the Sørensen-Dice similarity index and Non-metric Multidimensional Scaling ordination (NMDS) for differentiation among blocks. A total of 17 mangrove species across 10 families were recorded, with the Rhizophoraceae as the dominant family. Sonneratia alba showed the highest relative abundance (27%), followed by Rhizophora apiculata (19%) and Aegiceras corniculatum (13%). Total mangrove coverage reached 40.57 ha. Species diversity varied among blocks, with the highest value recorded in Cibako (H′ = 1.87), indicating moderate diversity, while other blocks showed lower values. Evenness values suggested uneven species distribution due to dominance by a few taxa. Similarity analysis and NMDS showed that Cipunaga, Cibako, Cipalawah and Sakad had similar species composition. The findings indicate that the biodiversity of mangrove species in the study area is suitable and supports the reproduction and development of mangrove plants. A comprehensive compilation of diversity data can serve as a crucial element in ecosystem management within conservation areas and support monitoring and future strategies by the Natural Resources Conservation Agency.

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) is an important vegetable crop widely cultivated for its high nutritional and economic value, but its productivity is often affected by environmental variability. This research aimed to evaluate genotype × environment interactions, adaptability, and stability of four bush-type common bean genotypes and two check varieties in two agroecological zones, specifically high-altitude area and medium-altitude area. This research was arranged in a randomized block design with four replications per location. Nine parameters were observed, including plant height, number of leaves, days to flowering, days to harvest, number of pods per plant, pod length, pod diameter, pod weight per plant, and yield. A combined analysis of variance revealed significant effects of genotype, environment, and G × E interactions on most traits. Stability analysis was performed using parametric and nonparametric methods. GGE biplot analysis was applied to visualize genotype performance and stability simultaneously. The results indicate that genotypes AB (14.07 t ha-1) and AK (14.19 t ha-1) have the highest yields and broad adaptability, owing to their low contributions to G × E interactions, making them relatively stable at both medium and high altitudes. Genotype BK (12.82 t ha-1) has high yields only in the high altitudes, indicating specific adaptability to high altitude conditions. These findings highlight AB and AK as promising candidates for broad adaptability in high and medium altitude areas, and BK for targeted application in highland production areas.
