Therefore, understanding their species diversity, especially in hard-bottom habitats is essential for ecological assessment and coastal management. This study aimed to explore the spatial diversity of gastropods inhabiting hard-bottom substrates along the Tomini Bay Coastline in Gorontalo, Indonesia and assess their potential as indicators of coastal water quality. Surveys were conducted at five main stations comprising 21 sub-stations and community structure was analyzed using diversity indices and biotic metrics. A total of 195 species representing 33 families were recorded, with Muricidae, Conidae, and Neritidae as dominant families. Planaxis sulcatus together with Nerita senegalensis and Littoraria scabra contributed substantially to overall abundance. Gastropod diversity exhibited marked spatial variation in community structure among stations. This variation was primarily influenced by turbidity, dissolved oxygen and orthophosphate concentration, which were identified as the key drivers differentiating environmental conditions across sites. Habitat quality assessment indicated slightly polluted conditions but overall maintained good ecological status. These findings demonstrate the sensitivity of intertidal gastropod assemblages to environmental gradients and reinforce their value as effective bioindicators for long-term biodiversity monitoring and coastal ecosystems management in tropical hard-bottom environments.

Devis anchovy (Encrasicholina devisi) and Hardenberg's anchovy (Stolephorus insularis) are small pelagic fish with strong market demand in Tegal Waters, Indonesia. The study was performed to examine the population dynamics of the anchovies based on data from fish catches from April 2024 to March 2025. A total 9,546 samples (6,294 E. devisi and 3,252 S. insularis) were used in this study. Fish length and total weight were measured to determine growth and exploitation, using von Bertalanffy’s equation for growth parameters and the Beverton and Gulland’s equations for mortality and exploitation rates. The growth analysis indicated maximum lengths (L∞) of 103.81 mm for E. devisi and 49 mm for S. insularis, with growth coefficients (K) of 2.5 and 1.6/year, respectively. Both species were categorized as overexploited. Therefore, catch quotas need to be applied in order to ensure the fish sustainability. The maximum sustainable yields (CMSY) of 485.6739 tons and 85.8343 tons have generated economic values of IDR 5.8 billion (USD 341,417) and IDR 3.7 billion (USD 217,800), respectively. The sustainable management measures include reducing fishing effort by 30-40%, increasing mesh size by 1-2 mm, adopting a 1-2 months restricted season, and reducing total capture to 60-70% of current levels, with a stricter reduction for E. devisi than S. insularis.

Environmental gradients of Nypa fruticans productivity and benthic macrofaunal assemblages in an acidic peat coastal ecosystem, Eastern Sumatra, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 26: 6212-6223. Nypa fruticans is a significant palm species found along tropical peat-fringed coasts; however, there is limited understanding of how its productivity and benthic fauna respond to hydrochemical gradients in acidic peat systems in this region. This study aimed to quantify the relationships of salinity and soil pH with N. fruticans aboveground biomass (AGB), carbon stocks, leaf chlorophyll, and benthic macrofauna along an estuarine–coastal gradient on an acidic peat coast in eastern Sumatra, Indonesia. We hypothesised that Nypa productivity and benthic richness and diversity would be highest in low-salinity, acidic estuarine plots and would decline towards saline, near-neutral coastal plots. We established 30 independent 10 × 10 m plots (10 per zone: estuarine, transitional, and coastal) and measured AGB (dry mass), carbon (C = 0.5 × AGB), leaf chlorophyll content, salinity, and soil pH. Benthic macrofauna were sampled using three 25 × 25 cm quadrats per plot, and diversity indices were calculated from quadrat and plot-level abundances. Differences among zones and their associations with environmental variables were assessed using ANOVA, non-parametric tests, correlation analysis, and PCA. AGB decreased from 45.9 ± 4.2 t ha-¹ in the estuarine zone to 3.1 ± 1.7 t ha-¹ and 1.1 ± 0.5 t ha-¹ in the transitional and coastal zones (F₂,₂₇ = 41.52, p < 0.001), with proportional reductions in the carbon stocks. Chlorophyll content was correlated with AGB (r = 0.84, p < 0.001), supporting its use as a measure of vigour. Benthic diversity (Shannon H′) declined from 1.450 in estuarine plots to 1.073 in coastal plots, and total benthic abundance decreased seaward, parallel to the declining Nypa productivity. Over this gradient, salinity increased from 0-1.4‰ to 9-10‰, and soil pH shifted from acidic (~2.35) to near-neutral (~7.0). Biotic variables were negatively associated with the salinity–pH axis in the PCA, indicating that hydrochemical gradients jointly structured the vegetation and benthos. This first gradient-based study of Indonesia’s acidic peat coasts quantifies Nypa productivity and benthic macrofauna along a salinity–pH gradient, providing a baseline for future multi-season investigations.

Vibrio alginolyticus is an emerging bacterial pathogen associated with hemorrhagic disease and mortality in red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) and other marine fish species. This study investigated virulence phenotypes and virulence-associated gene profiles of V. alginolyticus isolates infecting red drum, which is strain-dependent and reflects the combined expression of multiple phenotypic traits rather than the presence of individual virulence genes alone. Twenty V. alginolyticus isolates obtained from diseased red drum farmed in Hue City, central Vietnam, were evaluated for swimming motility, extracellular enzyme activity, and biofilm formation, and a composite virulence score was calculated using min-max normalized phenotypic data. Based on these scores, ten high-ranking isolates were selected for PCR screening of sixteen virulence-associated genes. Marked phenotypic variability was observed among isolates, with motility and extracellular enzyme activity contributing most strongly to virulence differentiation, whereas biofilm formation was generally weak to moderate. Fifteen genes were detected, including flagellar and motility-related genes (flaA, flaC, flgE, flrA, flrB, flrC, and flaK), hemolysin-related genes (trh and tlh), an adhesion gene (tcpA), secretion system components (vopB, vopD, and vgrG), and iron-acquisition genes (pvuA and pvsA), whereas tdh was not detected. Among the isolates, VA15 and VA17 exhibited the highest motility and extracellular enzyme activities, while most isolates formed weak but detectable biofilms. Pathogenicity testing confirmed that isolate VA15, identified as the most virulent based on in vitro profiling, caused dose-dependent mortality in red drum, with an LD50 of 4.0 × 104 CFU/fish (95% CI: 3.2 × 104-5.1 × 104 CFU/fish). Overall, this study provides baseline phenotypic and molecular data on V. alginolyticus infecting farmed red drum in central Vietnam and contributes to understanding virulence variability among isolates in marine cage aquaculture systems.

Apis binghami binghami is an endemic honey bee of Wallacea that plays a crucial role in pollination and maintaining tropical ecosystem balance. However, information on its morphological characters along the elevational gradient in South Sulawesi remains limited. Environmental heterogeneity associated with altitude may strongly influence morphological traits related to flight performance, foraging efficiency, and physiological adaptation. This study aimed to analyze the morphological characters of A. b. binghami across three elevational zones lowland (0-300 masl), midland (301-700 masl), and highland (>700 masl) in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Worker bees were collected using standardized bait traps, with 30 individuals sampled from each elevation. A total of 37 morphometric characters were measured using stereo microscopy. Data were analyzed using one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), Principal Component Analysis (PCA), cluster analysis, and correlation analysis. The results revealed significant morphometric differences (p<0.001) among elevations, with increasing body size, wing length, abdomen, and sting dimensions at higher altitudes. PCA showed that the first principal component explained 80.22% of the total variation, primarily influenced by mesoscutum width, forewing length, including tegula, and abdominal length. Cluster analysis separated highland populations from lowland and midland groups, indicating clear morphological differentiation along the elevational gradient. These findings demonstrate pronounced morphological plasticity of A. b. binghami in response to altitude-related environmental conditions. The study provides the first comprehensive morphometric dataset for this endemic subspecies in South Sulawesi and offers important insights for conservation planning.

Altitudinal variation is an important environmental factor influencing the distribution and dynamics of vector insect communities in tropical regions. However, information on how elevational gradients affect mosquito distribution and diversity in Banten Province remains limited. This study aimed to examine the association between elevation and key environmental factors in shaping mosquito diversity. Sampling was conducted at 13 sites (n = 13) across an elevational range of 12-815 masl. Mosquitoes were collected between 18:00 and 06:00 WIB (UTC+07:00). Environmental parameters recorded included air temperature, relative humidity, land-use category, vegetation, and the availability of aquatic habitats. Relationships between elevation, temperature, and humidity with abundance were analyzed using Spearman correlation. Differences in diversity among elevational zones were tested using the Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by Dunn's post hoc test. A total of 3,528 mosquitoes representing nine species and five genera were collected. Total mosquito abundance declined sharply with increasing elevation and was strongly negatively correlated with elevation (r = -0.93, p<0.001) but positively correlated with air temperature (r = 0.77, p = 0.02). Culex quinquefasciatus (79.13%) and Culex vishnui (19.27%) dominated lowland areas, whereas Armigeres subalbatus showed increased abundance at higher elevations. Species richness remained relatively stable along the elevational gradient (2-4 species), indicating that elevation primarily influenced species dominance and abundance distribution rather than the number of species present. These findings suggest that elevation is strongly associated with mosquito diversity. Based on vector abundance and composition, potential transmission risk may be higher in lowland areas; however, pathogen prevalence was not assessed in this study. Because the study was observational, with possible collinearity between elevation and temperature and limited high-elevation replication, causal interpretations should be made cautiously.

Genetic diversity of Dillenia indica using iPBS markers and its implications for sustainability management in Koh Kret, Thailand. Protecting genetic diversity in perennial fruit trees is essential for maintaining healthy ecosystems and supporting local communities under increasing urbanization. Dillenia indica is a culturally important fruit species on Koh Kret, Nonthaburi Province, Thailand, yet it has not previously been investigated using molecular markers. This study assessed the genetic diversity and population structure of D. indica using inter-Primer Binding Site (iPBS) markers together with information on local cultivation practices. A total of 82 individuals were sampled from seven villages across the island. Twenty iPBS primers generated 88 clear and reproducible bands, of which 39 (44.32%) were polymorphic, with a mean Polymorphism Information Content (PIC) of 0.209. Genetic diversity indices indicated moderate variation (H = 0.138±0.032, I = 0.270±0.307). Analysis of molecular variance showed that most genetic variation occurred within populations (78%), whereas 22% was distributed among populations (ΦST = 0.224, p<0.001). Neighbor-Joining clustering, principal coordinate analysis, and Bayesian inference consistently identified two genetic groups (K = 2) with high levels of admixture, suggesting considerable gene flow and weak spatial structuring. Interviews with local growers revealed that seed exchange, mixed home-garden cultivation, and natural regeneration contribute to genetic connectivity among communities. This research provides the first molecular evidence for D. indica on Koh Kret and demonstrates that traditional management practices help maintain intra-population genetic diversity. The findings support community-based conservation and sustainable utilization of this species within peri-urban agroecosystems.

The oral cavity is a dynamic ecosystem hosting diverse anaerobic microorganisms that influence oral health. Porphyromonas gingivalis, a key Gram-negative anaerobe, is strongly implicated in periodontitis pathogenesis. Chronic mercury (Hg) exposure, particularly among artisanal gold miners, has been associated with microbial dysbiosis and antibiotic resistance genes. This study investigated the relationship between salivary Hg levels, subgingival anaerobic bacteria, detection of P. gingivalis and gyrA in periodontitis among gold miners. A cross-sectional design included 60 participants (30 gold miners and 30 non-gold miners). Subgingival plaque was cultured anaerobically and identified using Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS); Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) detected P. gingivalis and gyrA. Salivary Hg concentrations were determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry with a Mercury Vapor Unit (AAS-MVU). Median salivary Hg levels were significantly higher in miners than non-miners (0.09 µg/L [0.03-0.22] vs. 0.03 µg/L [0.03-0.03]; p<0.001), although all values remained below the 5 µg/L salivary threshold. Culture recovery was low, identifying Prevotella denticola and P. melaninogenica among miners and Bifidobacterium sp. among non-miners. PCR detected P. gingivalis in 80.00% of miners and 63.33% of non-miners (p = 0.152). In contrast, gyrA detection was higher in miners (19/30, 63.33%) than in non-miners (10/30, 33.33%, p = 0.020). Mann–Whitney analysis showed no significant differences between salivary Hg and detection of P. gingivalis (p = 0.420) or gyrA (p = 0.953). However, a significant association between P. gingivalis and gyrA was observed using the Chi-square test (χ² = 22.191, p<0.001; φ = 0.61). Although P. gingivalis prevalence did not differ significantly, chronic low-dose Hg exposure was associated with higher gyrA detection and distinct anaerobic bacteria in miners, suggesting Hg may be associated with resistance-related microbial dynamics in periodontal biofilms. Larger studies using quantitative PCR and metagenomic approaches are needed to clarify underlying mechanisms.

Forest management zoning may influence termite attack patterns and the composition of termite taxa associated with attacked vegetation. This study evaluated the effects of management zones and vegetation growth stages on termite attack frequency, attack intensity, and diversity patterns in Wera Nature Tourism Park (WNTP), Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. Field surveys were conducted using nested vegetation plots established across three management zones. Termite sampling was restricted to plants showing visible signs of attack within the vegetation plots, and specimens were identified primarily on the basis of morphological characteristics, especially soldier morphology. Attack frequency and intensity were analyzed using two-way ANOVA, whereas termite community structure was described using Shannon diversity, Margalef richness, Pielou evenness, and relative dominance indices. Both management zone and vegetation growth stage significantly affected termite attack frequency and attack intensity (p<0.001), with trees showing the highest vulnerability. The utilization zone had the highest attack intensity (27.07%), whereas the protection zone had the lowest (11.00%). A total of eight termite taxa representing five genera were recorded from attacked vegetation across the three management zones. Most taxa were identified to species level, whereas two taxa (Bulbitermes sp. and Odontotermes sp.) remained at genus level because available diagnostic characters were insufficient for reliable species-level identification. Diversity and richness of termite taxa associated with attacked vegetation were highest in the protection zone and lowest in the utilization zone. Nasutitermes matangensis was the most dominant and widely distributed taxon across zones. Because environmental drivers were not measured directly, the observed zonation effects should be interpreted as statistically supported associations rather than confirmed mechanisms. These findings highlight the value of zoning-based termite monitoring for adaptive forest conservation and sustainable ecotourism management in WNTP.

Information on macrofungi across different land-cover types in rural areas, particularly in South Kalimantan Province, remains limited, although these organisms have potential applications in village development and community empowerment. This study aimed to record macrofungal species and their substrates in three land-cover types, namely dukuh (DU), agricultural land (AL), and shrubland (SL) in Mandiangin Timur Village, Banjar Regency, South Kalimantan, Indonesia; to compare fungal communities among these land-cover types; and to evaluate their utilization by the local community. Fungi and their substrates were surveyed along a 200 m × 3 m transect in each land-cover type as a baseline inventory. Supporting data included microenvironmental parameters such as soil pH, air temperature, air humidity, and light intensity, as well as information on mushroom utilization obtained through community interviews. A total of 52 macrofungal species representing 25 families were recorded. Of these, 47 species (25 families) were found in DU, 15 species (8 families) in AL, and 9 species (4 families) in SL. The Sørensen similarity index was highest between AL and SL (0.50), followed by DU and AL (0.35), and lowest between DU and SL (0.29). Each species was observed growing on a single substrate. Most species (63.46%) occurred on dead wood, while the remainder were found on soil, litter, and living wood. Bolbitius reticulatus was the only species recorded on the living stem of durian (Durio zibethinus). Of the total species documented, 20 were reported by the community as being utilized, and 18 of these were both reported and recorded during the village survey. Most of these species are used as food. Regular education and training programs are therefore recommended to enhance community knowledge, promote safe utilization, and support the conservation of macrofungi.
