Abstract

Background. Mainstream digital public infrastructure (DPI) often fails to serve marginalized communities, reinforcing the “digital divide” caused by exclusionary design that overlooks barriers such as low literacy and lack of digital trust. Purpose. To quantitatively analyze the causal impact of a co-designed, voice-first mobile application on access to information and public services for marginalized communities. Method. The study employed a mixed-methods, quasi-experimental Difference-in-Differences (DiD) design, comparing an intervention group (N = 120) with a control group (N = 115). The intervention’s impact was measured using the validated Digital Access and Agency Index (DAAI). Results. The intervention group showed a transformative and statistically significant improvement: their service application rate increased from 8.3% to 62.5%, and their mean DAAI score rose by 22.38 points (p < 0.001), while the control group showed no change. Conclusion. The digital divide is fundamentally a design problem rather than a user deficit. The co-design process, by fostering social trust, served as the main causal mechanism for reducing digital exclusion, demonstrating that inclusive, human-centered design can effectively empower vulnerable populations.

Abstract

Millennial farmers are defined as farmers aged 18-55 years old. In North Aceh Regency, the number of millennial farmers, particularly in Lhoksukon Village, has increased rapidly in 2023. These millennial farmers face challenges in marketing their products and monitoring their agricultural activities remotely and in real-time, such as water management and crop irrigation. The aim of this activity is to increase farmers' interest in agriculture in order to make millennial farmers more advanced and independent and to achieve food security in Lancang Barat Village, Dewantara Sub-district, North Aceh. The partners in this activity are the Geuthena farmer group in Lancang Barat Village, Dewantara Sub-district, North Aceh, consisting of 10 farmers. The data collection techniques used in this community service activity were observation, interviews, and questionnaires to identify the problems that occur. The methods used in this activity were workshops, training, counseling, and mentoring for farmers for 4 months in the use of ASSA (Smart Shopp Agriculture Application) technology for distribution channels in the e-marketplace system. The results of this activity were an increase in understanding of the use of digital technology, enabling farmers to reach a wider market and allowing them to sell their products directly to consumers. Some brief findings from this activity included a significant 80% increase in the use of digital technology with the ASSA application among the Geuthena farmer group, a 30% increase in product sales in the first three months, and faster product delivery times. This activity has successfully improved farmers' digital skills and optimised distribution channels, which can significantly contribute to food security.

Abstract

Water springs (mata air) in the highland regions of Bali play a vital role in sustaining local livelihoods, cultural identity, and ecological balance. Increasing pressures from tourism expansion, agricultural intensification, and changes in land use have led to declining water quality and reduced discharge, threatening both environmental sustainability and community well-being. Community-Based Natural Resource Management (CBNRM) has emerged as a promising approach to safeguard local water resources by integrating traditional ecological knowledge, collective stewardship, and participatory governance. This study aims to examine how community-driven water spring conservation initiatives contribute to sustainable resource management and socio-environmental resilience in highland Bali. A mixed-methods research design was employed, combining quantitative assessments of water quality and discharge stability with qualitative analysis of local governance practices. Data were collected through water sampling, structured observations, household surveys, and in-depth interviews with customary leaders, farmers, and conservation volunteers. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive comparison to identify ecological changes, while qualitative data underwent thematic coding to assess community engagement, values, and institutional support. The findings indicate that community-based conservation improved spring conditions through reforestation efforts, traditional zoning enforcement, and adoption of environmentally responsible agricultural practices. Participants demonstrated stronger awareness of water ecosystem functions and shared responsibility for long-term sustainability. The reactivation of customary regulations (awig-awig) and ritual practices strengthened compliance and collective monitoring efforts, enhancing institutional legitimacy. This study concludes that integrating cultural traditions with participatory ecological management produces effective, locally grounded conservation outcomes. Strengthening CBNRM strategies in highland Bali can support broader water security goals, climate resilience, and intergenerational environmental heritage protection. Policy alignment and multi-stakeholder collaboration will be essential to maintain ecological gains and scale the model to other sensitive watershed regions.

Abstract

Post-conflict communities often struggle with persistent trauma, weakened social cohesion, and limited youth agency in rebuilding peace. Young people, who are frequently among the most affected by violence, face ongoing psychosocial challenges and social exclusion, making their empowerment critical to sustainable conflict recovery. Participatory theater and arts have emerged as innovative, non-formal educational strategies that encourage creative expression, emotional healing, and collaborative problem-solving, offering new avenues for youth involvement in peacebuilding. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a participatory theater and arts program in enhancing youth empowerment and improving interpersonal conflict resolution skills in a post-conflict setting. A mixed-methods research design was implemented with 50 youth participants aged 15–22 from a post-conflict community. The intervention involved a twelve-week program combining drama workshops, storytelling circles, and collaborative performance creation. Quantitative data were collected through pre- and post-program assessments measuring empowerment indicators, self-confidence, and conflict resolution attitudes. Qualitative data were obtained through focus group discussions, reflective journals, and observation during rehearsals and performances. The findings indicate significant improvements in self-efficacy, communication competence, and constructive conflict-handling approaches among participants. Youth demonstrated enhanced empathy, reduced stigma toward rival groups, and greater willingness to engage in dialogue as solutions emerged collectively during arts-based exercises. Performances staged at community events successfully triggered intergroup interaction and re-opened public spaces for peaceful social exchange. The study concludes that participatory theater and arts provide a culturally adaptive and psychologically safe platform for youth to reconstruct identities, challenge narratives of division, and develop skills essential to long-term peacebuilding. Integrating arts-based empowerment programs into post-conflict community development may foster stronger social resilience and youth leadership in sustaining peace efforts.

Abstract

Traditional culinary arts represent not only gastronomic heritage but also local identity and economic potential for communities. However, globalization and rapid changes in consumption patterns have contributed to a gradual decline in cultural food practices, especially in rural areas. Digital platforms offer new opportunities to preserve, promote, and commercialize traditional cuisines while strengthening community participation in the cultural economy. This study aims to examine how digital platforms can be effectively utilized to document culinary heritage, enhance market visibility for local food artisans, and foster sustainable community empowerment. A mixed-method approach was employed, combining qualitative interviews with culinary practitioners and tourism stakeholders, along with observational analysis of digital content and online engagement metrics. The findings reveal that digital platforms particularly social media, e-commerce applications, and online storytelling tools play a significant role in revitalizing traditional culinary knowledge, expanding product reach to broader markets, and increasing income opportunities for local communities. However, inconsistencies in digital literacy and limited access to technology remain significant constraints. The study concludes that integrating digital strategies into cultural food preservation programs can strengthen community resilience while ensuring the continuity of culinary heritage across generations. A collaborative ecosystem involving local governments, educational institutions, and technology providers is necessary to optimize digital empowerment outcomes. Future studies are encouraged to explore scalable models for digital culinary entrepreneurship to support sustainable cultural economy development.

Abstract

Rural communities often face significant barriers in accessing timely and reliable health information, including limited healthcare infrastructure, low digital connectivity, and shortages of qualified health professionals. Community radio has emerged as an accessible medium capable of delivering health education and disease prevention messages tailored to local social and cultural contexts. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of community radio as an educational intervention for improving public awareness, shaping preventive health behaviors, and fostering community engagement in rural health initiatives. A mixed-method approach was used involving surveys with 120 rural listeners, in-depth interviews with radio broadcasters and health workers, and content analysis of selected health programs aired over a three-month period. Results show that community radio significantly improved listener knowledge regarding infectious disease prevention, maternal and child health practices, and sanitation behaviors. Respondents reported increased confidence in applying preventive actions and greater participation in local health campaigns promoted through broadcasts. Qualitative findings further indicate that the use of local languages, storytelling formats, and trusted community figures enhances credibility and message acceptance. However, challenges such as inconsistent broadcast coverage, limited funding, and dependence on volunteer participation reduce program sustainability. The study concludes that community radio remains a powerful and culturally responsive tool for strengthening health literacy in underserved rural populations. Integrating radio-based health education with broader community health strategies and technological advancements, such as mobile interaction and social media extensions, can optimize effectiveness and long-term impacts. Conclusion. This study has significant implications for instructional practices in TFL settings and for L2 lecturers in the classroom. By understanding learners’ preferences for OCF, educators can tailor their instructional approaches to meet the specific needs of their students.
