Abstract

Background. The paradigm shift of society regarding waste needs to be done sustainably. Education of awareness and skills of citizens for waste management by implementing the principles of reduce, reuse and recycle (3R) is important in solving waste problems through waste management from the source.Purpose. The paradigm shift of society regarding waste needs to be done sustainably. Method. The method used by researchers in this study is the field research method with a descriptive approach where researchers go directly to the field and see phenomena and analyze and obtain a detailed and objective picture to obtain accurate data using the Participatory Action Research (ADR) method.Results. The results of this study explain that the waste bank teaches the community to sort waste, raises public awareness to process waste wisely in order to reduce waste transported to the landfill. Conclusion. Waste banks can make residents create and shape the character of residents to be better. This can be seen from the character of residents who have knowledge in managing the environment to make it beautiful.

Abstract

Background: Student engagement is crucial for academic success, yet many undergraduates exhibit low participation, poor attendance, and disengagement in General Studies (GNS) courses. Traditional teaching methods often fail to address the needs of diverse learners, particularly in large classes. The University of Ilorin recognizes the need for innovative approaches to improve academic engagement and outcomes. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the development and implementation of an Interactive Digital Manual (IDM) tailored to the specific needs of GNS students. It examined the effects of the IDM on student attendance, engagement, and academic participation, alongside students’ perceptions of its impact on learning and retention. Method: A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving 1,332 participants selected from 200-level GNS courses across 17 faculties. Quantitative data were collected through surveys and attendance logs, while qualitative data were gathered via open-ended questions and focus group discussions. Statistical analyses were used to evaluate the IDM's impact. Results: The findings reveal significant improvements in attendance and engagement following the IDM's implementation. Median attendance increased by 866, while engagement scores rose from a mean of 32.5 to 75.8. Students highlighted features such as self-paced learning, interactive exercises, and real-time feedback as critical to their improved understanding and retention of course material. Conclusion: The IDM effectively enhances student engagement, attendance, and learning outcomes in GNS courses. Its innovative design addresses diverse learning needs, offering a structured, accessible, and interactive platform. This study underscores the value of digital tools in fostering academic success and calls for their broader integration into educational strategies.

Abstract

Background. The successful adoption of blended learning in educational institutions is often hindered by technological and institutional barriers. These include constraints related to ICT infrastructure, digital literacy, and institutional policies, which collectively impede the implementation of blended learning methodologies. Purpose. This study aimed to investigate the institutional and technological barriers to blended learning adoption at Kwara State College of Education Oro. Specifically, it focused on assessing technological constraints, institutional policies, and digital literacy levels among educators and students. Method. A mixed-methods descriptive survey research design was employed. Simple random sampling was used to select a sample of 641 students and 90 lecturers. Data were collected using structured and unstructured questionnaires administered via Google Forms, enabling a comprehensive analysis of key trends. Results. The findings revealed significant barriers to blended learning adoption, including inadequate ICT infrastructure, low digital literacy among educators and students, and inconsistent power supply. These challenges highlight the need for targeted interventions to overcome the obstacles to blended learning implementation. Conclusion. The study recommends establishing a dedicated blended learning committee, developing clear institutional policies, and enhancing digital literacy training for both educators and students. Addressing these barriers is essential for the successful adoption of blended learning, which can improve educational outcomes and better prepare future educators for modern classrooms. Creating a supportive environment at Kwara State College of Education Oro is key to fostering the effective integration of blended learning methodologies

Abstract

Background. The development of science literacy in early childhood lays the foundation for critical thinking, inquiry skills, and lifelong learning. Traditional approaches to science education often overlook the unique cognitive and developmental needs of young learners. Recent pedagogical shifts suggest that play-based learning may offer an effective pathway to foster scientific thinking in early childhood education. Purpose. This study investigates how play-based strategies support the development of early science literacy among preschool-aged children. The research employed a qualitative case study design involving three early childhood education centers that integrated science themes into daily play activities. Method. Data were collected through classroom observations, educator interviews, and children’s learning artifacts, then analyzed thematically to identify patterns of inquiry and conceptual understanding. Results. Findings revealed that play-based environments encouraged curiosity, hypothesis generation, experimentation, and early evidence-based reasoning. Children demonstrated an emerging understanding of scientific concepts such as cause and effect, classification, and environmental awareness through guided exploratory play. Conclusion. The study concludes that play-based learning serves as a powerful pedagogical approach for nurturing early science literacy. It recommends intentional integration of scientific exploration into play curricula to promote cognitive engagement and scientific habits of mind in early learners.

Abstract

Background. Environmental sustainability has become a pressing global issue, demanding innovative educational interventions that directly engage communities. Project-Based Service Learning (PBSL) integrates academic learning with community service, fostering mutual growth and empowerment. Purpose. This study investigates the effect of PBSL on community empowerment within the context of sustainable environmental management. The objective is to assess how active participation in student-led environmental projects enhances local communities’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding sustainable development. Employing a mixed-method approach, the research involved quasi-experimental design and participatory observation in three rural villages. Method. Quantitative data were collected through pre- and post-tests, while qualitative data came from focus group discussions and stakeholder interviews. Results. The results indicate significant improvements in environmental awareness, collaborative problem-solving skills, and long-term community engagement. Furthermore, communities reported an increased capacity to manage environmental resources independently. Conclusion. In conclusion, PBSL not only serves as an effective pedagogical strategy but also empowers communities to take ownership of sustainable practices. The findings contribute to the growing literature on experiential learning and its transformative impact on society.

Abstract

Backgroud. The prevalence of infectious diseases remains a pressing public health concern in rural areas of Indonesia, including Ulu Bawang Barat District, where limited access to healthcare services and low health literacy contribute to continued vulnerability. Conventional health interventions often fail to produce sustained behavioral change due to their top-down nature and lack of cultural sensitivity. Purpose. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a community-based health education model in promoting awareness and prevention of infectious diseases among local populations.Method. A qualitative research approach was adopted using a participatory action research (PAR) design. Data were collected through focus group discussions, semi-structured interviews with community health volunteers and residents, and direct observation of educational activities. Results. The findings indicate that culturally adapted health education programs delivered through peer-led initiatives significantly improved knowledge, attitudes, and preventive behaviors related to hygiene, sanitation, and early disease detection. The involvement of community members in designing and implementing interventions enhanced trust, engagement, and sustainability.Conclusions. The study concludes that community-based health education is a viable strategy for empowering rural populations in managing infectious disease risks. This model emphasizes the role of local agency and participatory learning in strengthening grassroots public health systems.

Abstract

Background. The rapid pace of modernization and urbanization has contributed to the erosion of local cultural heritage, especially in rural communities such as Bukit Sangkal Village, South Sumatra. Cultural practices, traditional arts, and indigenous values are increasingly marginalized in favor of more dominant globalized norms. Purpose. This study aims to examine how community service programs initiated by higher education institutions can play a pivotal role in preserving and revitalizing local culture. Method. Using a qualitative participatory action research (PAR) method, the study engaged directly with local stakeholders, including elders, artisans, youth groups, and village leaders. Data were collected through focus group discussions, field observations, and documentation of cultural activities.Results. The findings reveal that collaborative cultural workshops, educational campaigns, and documentation of oral traditions significantly increased awareness and participation among local residents. The revitalization of traditional dance and craft-making practices was particularly effective in engaging the younger generation. Conclusion. The study concludes that community service programs can act as dynamic instruments of cultural preservation when they are participatory, adaptive, and context-sensitive. These programs not only preserve heritage but also strengthen communal identity and intergenerational transmission of cultural knowledge.

Abstract

Background. Social entrepreneurship has emerged as a strategic approach to address socio-economic disparities, especially in remote communities where access to economic opportunities and institutional support is limited. Purpose. This study aims to explore the development of social entrepreneurship in the remote region of Sidenreng Rappang, Indonesia, focusing on community-driven initiatives and their socio-economic impacts. Method. Employing a qualitative case study methodology, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis involving local entrepreneurs, community leaders, and development agencies. Results. The findings reveal that successful social entrepreneurship in the region is driven by strong local leadership, the utilization of indigenous knowledge, and adaptive strategies that align with the community’s cultural and ecological context. Challenges identified include limited access to capital, insufficient training in entrepreneurial skills, and weak institutional support. Conclusion. The study concludes that fostering social entrepreneurship in remote areas requires a hybrid support system involving education, mentorship, policy facilitation, and community empowerment. This research contributes to the growing body of literature on inclusive development by highlighting the contextual dynamics of entrepreneurial ecosystems in marginalized areas

Abstract

Background. Rapid urbanization in Jakarta has intensified challenges related to food security, limited land availability, and environmental degradation, prompting the need for sustainable household-scale food production systems. This study explores the application of smart aquaponics technology as an integrated model combining aquaculture and hydroponics for efficient food production within urban households. Purpose. The research aims to assess the technological feasibility, productivity outcomes, and environmental benefits of smart aquaponics as a sustainable alternative to conventional urban farming methods. Method. A mixed-method design was employed, incorporating experimental trials, sensor-based monitoring, and household surveys conducted between January and August 2024 across five Jakarta districts.. Results. Results indicate that smart aquaponics systems increased vegetable yield by 38% and reduced water consumption by 42% compared to traditional hydroponic setups. The integration of IoT sensors enabled automated nutrient control, improving fish growth rates and system stability. Respondents reported enhanced household food self-sufficiency and reduced monthly food expenditure. Conclusion. The study concludes that smart aquaponics offers a scalable and environmentally friendly solution for urban food resilience, aligning with Indonesia’s Sustainable Development Goals on food security and environmental sustainability.
