Abstract

Watersheds must be managed as a unified area from upstream to downstream, by considering various geophysical and socio-economic aspects. Changes in watershed morphology are one of the important factors that can affect the hydrological system and affect the water availability of a region. The study aimed to analyse the dependable discharge of the Bengkulu River and develop policies for  sustainable management of the Bengkulu Watershed. The methods used to analyze the reliable discharge are the Weibull distribution flow duration curve (with 90% probability) and Interpretive Structural Modelling (ISM). Results showed that, from 1990 to 2020, land use in the Bengkulu Watershed changed in the form of a 34,58 km2 (7,30%) decrease in Secondary Dryland Forest area, and a 10,54 km2 (2,22%) increase in mining area. The dependable discharge of Bengkulu River (with 90% probability) is 10.93 m3/s or approximately 344.69 million m3. Furthermore, the Bengkulu River’s flow regime coefficient fluctuates considerably and has shows an increasing trend in recent years. This indicates that the watershed is experiencing degradation due to changes in land cover and global climate changes. Some policy recommendations that need to be implemented include integrating spatial planning and watershed management plans across local governments and to guide natural resource management, reforestating or planting trees to maintain vegetated areas, and planting forests and crops through agroforestry.

Abstract

The Cemoro Modang Special Purpose Forest Area (SPFA) plays a vital role in supporting forestry research, education, and training. SPFA Cemoro Modang, as one of the forestry research and development units, has experienced the dynamics of adding area functions as a role model for implementing standard models in the forestry sector. This has led to changes in its forest governance system. It needs new strategies to ensure sustainable forest management, especially in balancing conservation, research, and community engagement. This study identifies several strategic approaches to sustainable management using a SWOT analysis method. Based on the SWOT results, stakeholders are divided into interest quadrants according to their level of influence and interests. The strategic approaches include: (1) fostering partnerships between forest management stakeholders, (2) resolving land use conflicts through inclusive dialogue and mediation, (3) strengthening the capacity of forest managers and local partners, (4) building cross-sectoral collaborations, and (5) optimizing the use of Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) to improve local community livelihoods without sacrificing forest integrity. Stakeholder involvement is the foundation of this strategy. The key stakeholders are Office for Standard Implementation of Environment and Forestry Instruments Solo, which manages the SPFA; State Forestry Public Company Cepu Management Unit, which owns the plant assets; pesanggem, or forest farmers who cultivate forest land; and community groups that partner with SPFA in its management. Through the combination of multi-stakeholder collaboration and strategic management practices, SPFA Cemoro Modang serves as a model for sustainable forest management.

Abstract

The Tanralili sub-watershed is part of the Maros watershed, located in South Sulawesi, which plays a crucial role in maintaining an important ecosystem function. However, it has experienced a decline in quality due to land cover change, such as deforestation. This study aimed to assess the physical characteristics of the Tanralili sub-watershed area that affect the variability of stream flow components, analyse land cover changes, calculate the magnitude of flow components, and evaluate the impact of land cover change on the hydrological response of the sub-watershed. The data used included land cover, rainfall, river water levels in 2011 and 2022, and soil types. The straight-line hydrograph method was used to analyse the river flow components, namely surface flow, interflow, and base flow. The results showed an increase in surface flow of 85.43% and a decrease in base flow of 65.12%. This change is related to the conversion of forests into agricultural land and settlements, as well as variations in rainfall that affect the watershed’s hydrological response. These changes increase the potential risk of flooding during the rainy season and droughts during the dry season. Therefore, the importance of upstream area conservation and land conversion control as part of hydrological risk mitigation strategies and sustainable water resources management in the Tanralili Sub-watershed. Although this study suggests that the hydrograph approach can be used to detect the impact of land use change on river flow dynamics,

Abstract

The Sandaniki plant (Cyrtandra polyneura) is an endemic species found in the Gandang Dewata Forest in West Sulawesi. It is traditionally used as a food source during ceremonies of the Mamasa tribe. Excessive exploitation in its natural habitat raises concerns regarding its sustainability. This study aimed to identify microhabitat characteristics and analyze the relationship between environmental factors and the C. polyneura growth. The information will be use as baseline information to support its cultivation on community-owned land with an agroforestry system. Data were collected through direct field observations in 25 plots in the Gandang Dewata Forest. The observed parameters included the population of C. polyneura as the dependent variable; and soil moisture, light intensity, soil pH, and canopy cover density as the independent variables. The obtained data were analyzed quantitatively using descriptive methods and Spearman’s Rho correlation analysis in SPSS. The results showed a strong positive correlation between soil moisture, tree density, and the population of C. polyneura. These findings suggest that C. polyneura can be cultivated in an agroforestry system under moist, shady, and densely forested microhabitat conditions, and slightly acidic soil. This study recommends adaptive cultivation as a conservation strategy and an agroforestry-based local food revitalization, in line with the wisdom of the Mamasa tribe.

Abstract

Baseflow separation methods are widely applied in hydrological studies; however, they are rarely implementated in small- to medium-scale catchments in tropical monsoonal climates. Understanding baseflow dynamics in this area is essential for sustainable watershed management, especially under increasing hydrometeorological stress. This study evaluates the performance of three graphical HYSEP algorithms (Fixed Interval, Sliding Interval, and Local Minimum) applied to the Setail Watershed in Banyuwangi Regency, Indonesia. This area experiences recurrent downstream flooding and seasonal drought. Daily streamflow data from Automatic Water Level Recorders (AWLR) in Jambewangi (upstream) and Kradenan (downstream) were used as input. Calibration was performed using a trial-and-error approach in the BFI+ software to obtain the optimal parameters that best fit the observed and estimated baseflow. Model performance was assessed using coefficient of determination (R²), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), and Flow Duration Curve (FDC) analysis. The Local Minimum algorithm demonstrated the highest R² value (up to 0.98) and the lowest RMSE (0.38) during both the calibration and validation periods, performing best overall. A high Baseflow Index (BFI) indicates that baseflow significantly contributes to total streamflow. This reflects the permeable characteristics of the watershed and its capacity to maintain discharge during the dry seasons. These findings confirm the applicability of the HYSEP method for tropical watersheds and emphasize the importance of local-scale calibration to improve model reliability and support adaptive water resource management under monsoonal climate variability.

Abstract

The Gajah Mungkur Reservoir is a strategic infrastructure that plays a vital role in flood control and the irrigation water supply in Wonogiri and the surrounding areas. However, the reservoir’s storage capacity continues to decline due to sedimentation from the surrounding watershed. It experiences an annual increase in sedimentation of approximately 3.2 million m³, with the Keduang Sub-watershed being the main contributor at 40%, or equivalent to 1.2 million m³ per year. This study uses the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) to provide a comprehensive overview of sedimentation and hydrological processes in the Keduang Sub-watershed that affect sedimentation during the 2022–2024 period. Data used in this study include Sentinel-2A satellite imagery, Digital Elevation Model (DEM), soil type maps, climate data, and river discharge data. These data are processed using QGIS 3.16 with the QSWAT3 plugin. Simulation results indicate that the SWAT model accurately represents hydrological and sedimentation dynamics, achieving the highest accuracy in 2024 with a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.956 and a Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) of 0.888. During the study period, the sedimentation rate significantly increased, reaching a peak sediment yield of 119,543.18 tons per hectare in 2023 and a maximum sediment accumulation of 86,030 tons at the outlet in 2024. The increase in sedimentation was triggered by landcover conversion for residential areas and reduced forest cover, which led to increased surface runoff and decreased infiltration.

Abstract

Forest and land rehabilitation is carried out annually to restore watershed conditions. In 2019, the BPDAS Jeneberang Saddang planted pine, candlenut, and sugar palm trees in Block 1 and 2, which cover 50 hectares each, in Rosoan Village, Enrekang District, Enrekang Regency, South Sulawesi Province. This study aims to determine the success rate and factors influencing the growth success of Forest and Land Rehabilitation (RHL) plant planted in 2019, and to determine the factors influencing their success. This study was a survei study. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis were carried out using multiple linear regression with three independent variables: soil physical factors, soil chemistry, and socio-economic conditions. The results showed that the growth rate of pine (Pinus mercusii) was 36.36% (very low)  or 432 trees/ha, candlenut (Aleurites moluccana) was 42.7% (very low) or 470 trees/ha, and sugar palm (Arenga pinnata) was 39.2% (very low) or 400 trees/ha. Soil physical factors such as clay texture (68.13%), and the solum depth of 20–25 cm have a significant effect on plant growth (F count 14.866 > 2.810; t count 3.856 > 1.679; sig. 0.000). Additionally, soil chemical factors (F count 7.940; sig. 0.007) and community socio-economic factors (F count 18.143; sig. 0.000) also showed a significant effect. This study recommended that BPDAS actively involve the surrounding community in intensive maintenance and budget for plant maintenance cost to optimize plant growth.

Abstract

Enhancing the accuracy of satellite rainfall data from the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) satellite is essential to support its vital role in hydrological applications and disaster management. This study aims to identify biases and inaccuracies in GPM data, particularly in regions characterized by complex terrain and extreme rainfall, which significantly impact the reliability. To address this, various bias-correction techniques, including Linear Scaling, Regression Analysis, and Correction Factor Methods, were applied and evaluated using metrics such as the Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) and correlation coefficients. The results indicate that the Linear Scaling method outperforms the others, achieving the greatest NSE of 0.906 and a correlation coefficient of 0.904. Simultaneously, the Regression and Correction Factor methods exhibited robust performance with NSE values ranging from 0.79 to 0.80. The application of the correction arises from the merging of the Linear Scaling method with the IDW-based spatial interpolation technique, facilitating the validation of the spatial distribution of adjusted rainfall data. This hybrid methodology enhances comprehension of spatial-temporal variability and extreme phenomena. This study enhances the precision of satellite rainfall data and lays a foundation for hydrological modeling and disaster risk mitigation.

Abstract

Watershed management in developing countries often faces persistent implementation gaps, despite the existence of sound environmental policies. This study investigates how stakeholder structure and coalition dynamics contribute to governance challenges in the Paguyaman Watershed, Gorontalo, Indonesia. Using a descriptive-exploratory approach, the MACTOR method was applied to analyze the relational structure among 15 key actors and 22 strategic objectives, based on a structured questionnaire, focus group discussions, and influence mapping. The results reveal a polarized stakeholder network divided into two coherent coalitions: a Government-Academic coalition oriented towards technocratic goals and a Civil Society coalition focused on socio-ecological justice. Divergence scores between the coalitions ranged from 0.81 to 0.87, indicating a high significant ideological conflict. Industry actors are found structurally isolated, with low convergence scores (<0.3), undermining collaborative efforts. The influence-dependence analysis identified four Driving Actors, seven Linking Actors, one Dependent Actor, and three Autonomous Actors. These imbalanced relational explain the failure of institutional coordination and the limited policy legitimacy. These findings emphasize that technical solutions alone are insufficient; effective watershed governance requires strategic interventions to bridge polarized coalition, engage isolated industry sectors, and strengthen coordinating actors to promote inclusive, and collaborative governance.
