Abstract

Mercury and iron are toxic heavy metals that often enter the waters through anthropogenic activities. The Batanghari River is one of the rivers affected by heavy metals. This study aims to remove mercury and iron from river water by using an adsorbent from egg shells. The treatment used was direct contact through stirring with variations of 45 minutes, 90 minutes, and 135 minutes. The doses of eggshell powder used were 1 grams, 5 grams, 10 grams, and 15 grams. The optimal removal efficiency is 100% for mercury and 89.54% for iron. The best adsorbent dose is 5 grams for mercury and 10 grams for iron and the best stirring speed is 135 minutes on both types of metals. The results of this study found that the removal of mercury and iron using eggshell powder is an easy, cheap, and effective process to implement.

Abstract

The Bedadung River is a typical environment where anthropogenic pollution often occurs thus rapidly changing the chemical and biological composition of the sediments and surface water. However, the effects of urbanization on the organization and diversity of the microbial community in rivers have not been adequately studied. A thorough examination of the microbial dispersion in the Bedadung River's surface water is presented. This research aims to determine the type and prevalence of pathogenic bacteria from Bedadung River water samples, Jember Regency. To investigate the prevalence of bacterial contaminants, sixteen sites along the Bedadung River were chosen. Bacterial isolation and identification using chromogenic media, such as Salmonella Chromogenic Agar (SCA) and Mannitol Salt Agar (MSA). Using API E 20 media, the bacteria were identified based on the color of the bacterial colonies in growth. The results indicated that contaminant bacteria isolated from Bedadung River water in Jember were S. aureus (96.67%), E. coli (98.33%), Salmonella sp. (96.67%), Shigella sp. (40%), and Proteus sp. (1.67%). These findings indicate that the river was a significant source of bacteria with a risk potential to humans and the environment that must be addressed. Many actions are needed to reduce fecal contamination of river water.

Abstract

Soil erosion is a significant threat to land sustainability and productivity in mountainous areas. Erosion can affect food security and land vulnerability to climate change. This study was conducted to assess the potential erosion and Erosion Hazard Level (TBE) in four types of land management involving the community in Karang Sidemen Village using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) method. The results showed that for each slope class, the Botanical Forest Park (Tahura) Nuraksa Utilization Zone had the lowest potential erosion value, followed by Community Forest (HKm) and Hortipark Tastura. Forest Areas with Special Purpose (KHDTK) Rarung has the highest potential erosion value in all slope classes. For all slope classes, TBE in the Tahura Nuraksa is considered  low-level. Erosion Hazard Levels in Hortipark Tastura, KHDTK Rarung, and HKm are dominated by the moderate category. There were significant high and very high TBE in KHDTK Rarung. Soil erodibility values for all types are low. Potential erosion and TBE in the four management types are strongly influenced by slope and vegetation factors.

Abstract

Muara Bangkahulu Subdistrict is a flood-prone area in Bengkulu City, Bengkulu Province. This study aims to identify the depth of aquifers in flood-prone areas. Flood-prone areas in the Muara Bangkahulu sub-district were analyzed using the Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) method with Schlumberger configuration of as many as 40 VES points in residential areas. Data acquisition was carried out using the Geoelectric IP Meter MAE X612-EM. The obtained data was then processed using Progress 3.0 software to get a 1D Resistivity Log cross-section. The log data was then modelled using Voxler 4 software to find an overview of the distribution of aquifers and subsurface structures in 3D. The distribution of resistivity values at depths of 2, 5, 10, 15, 30, and 40 meters using ArcGIS 10.8 are mapped to see the distribution of aquifers. The aquifers in the Muara Bangkahulu sub-district are sand and gravel with a value of 0-25 Ω.m. The intrusion of seawater influences this value. Flood-prone areas are located at shallow aquifer, namely depths of 2-5 m in the villages of Rawa Makmur, Rawamakmur Permai, and Bentiring Permai.

Abstract

Environmentally, retention basins are used for soil and water conservation but some of them experience drought. The location of the retention basin is fundamental in fulfilling environmental functions.  This study aimed to apply GIS for evaluating the environmental functions of retention basins in a certain area. Tonogoro and Krapyak retention basins lay on Kulon Progo Regency, Yogyakarta are the cases of this study. The Krapyak is located at the outlet of catchment area, while the Tonogoro is built on the hilltop. Environmental functions were assessed based on the potential drought and dynamics of carrying capacity due to sedimentation. The materials used were detailed design documents, Google Earth images, DEMNAS images, 1:25,000 scale Indonesian landform maps, rainfall data, and soil type maps. The initial reservoir capacity was calculated based on depth using DEMNAS data. The recent reservoir capacity was measured using a sounding method with a Garmin 520s Echo sounder, Depth Sounder, and Roll meter. All data was integrated in GIS to be presented visually in the form of a reservoir depth profile that reflects the dynamics of the reservoir capacity. The potential of surface runoff volume was calculated using SCS-CN method. This study found that the Tonogoro retention basin experienced a water shortage because the potential volume of runoff water was only able to supply 5% of the reservoir’s capacity. The accumulated sediment yield in the Krapyak retention basins was 3,498 m3 or 12.2% of the total capacity of a sedimentation rate of 699.6 m3 per year.

Abstract

Nusa Penida is one of several tourism areas used as a mainstay by Bali Province in accommodating tourists who want to vacation in Bali. One component to support tourism is water or water availability capacity. The lack of water resources that can be utilized, especially on two islands in Nusa Penida, namely Nusa Ceningan Island and Nusa Lembongan, requires looking for alternative water sources, one of which is rainwater sources. One method of utilizing rainwater is harvesting rainwater (PAH) using the roof of the building. The most decisive components in this technique are the roof of the building and the volume of the reservoir. The analysis showed that from the existing data, the water demand on Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Lembongan Islands during the dry six months was 48,405.5 liters per year. This water requirement can be met by using rainwater harvesting, which uses a roof area of 68.54 m2, and  the  harvested  water  is accommodated with a reservoir with a capacity of 48.41 m3.

Abstract

A continuous land use change in a watershed will affect the hydrological characteristics of the watershed. The Batang Tabir watershed has experienced a decrease in its carrying capacity shown by an increase in the frequency of flooding and the area of flood inundation. This study analyzes the land use changes in the Batang Tabir watershed, Merangin Regency, Jambi Province. The data used are DEM, topographic maps, river network maps, and Landsat imagery. Analysis of land use change used the Maximum Likelihood Classification (MLC) and the accuracy of image interpretation was carried out through the Kappa accuracy test. The land use prediction using the ANN model. The results showed that the rate of land use change increased in secondary forests, built-up areas, agriculture, and open areas; primary forests, paddy fields, and shrubs continued to decline. It is predicted in the year 2030, the trend will be the same; the built-up areas, agriculture, and secondary forests will increase, while primary forests, paddy fields, shrubs, and open areas will decrease.

Abstract

A unit hydrograph is a direct flow hydrograph obtained from effective rainfall that occurs at a fixed intensity per unit time, is evenly distributed throughout the watershed, and is applied to river basins without automatic water level recorder. The Klawoguk River Basin in Sorong City does not have an automatic water level recorder device (AWLR), with the problem of flooding when it rains with a quite high intensity. The research aims to understand the characteristics of the Klawoguk watershed and estimate the amount of discharge using the HSS Gama 1 method.  The study uses ArcGIS 10.8 to calculate the watershed's characteristics and applies the HSS Gama 1 method to analyse discharge. The research results show that Sub-watershed 1 has the largest area (9,74 km2), which means it can store large amounts of rainwater. The longest main river is Sub-watershed 5 (8.22 km), and the shortest is Sub-watershed 4 (4.95 km). This indicates that Sub-watershed 5 has a longer concentration time, so the risk of flooding is also low. The slope of the main river in the Klawoguk watershed is quite low (0.002-0.023), which indicates potential flooding. The watershed's shape ranges from 0.028 to 0.041, indicating it is not round. HSS Gama 1 analysis shows that the highest peak discharge (Qp) in Sub-watershed 1 at 1.427 m3/sec and the lowest in Sub-watershed 5 at 0.488 m3/sec. The result of this study is expected to provide an overview of discharge conditions based on the physical characteristics of the watershed.

Abstract

Bengkulu Province has many river estuaries that experience rapid morphological change, making it a watershed problem because it can trigger sedimentation downstream. This research determined the characteristics and influence of oceanographic power dynamics on morphological changes of river estuaries in Bengkulu. The methods are in situ measurements of oceanographic dynamics parameters, visual aerial photography from drones, and maps of the Air Rami and Selagan Jaya Estuary from USGS Landsat-8 satellite imagery. Based on the study's results, the characteristics of the study area have a mixed tidal type leaning to double daily with a formzhal value of 0.509 in the Air Rami and 0.491 in Selagan Jaya. Morphological changes in the estuary are caused by sedimentation, which is influenced by the interaction of oceanographic power dynamics in the form of tides, waves, currents from the watershed, tidal currents, longshore currents, and sediment. This condition is due to the weakening of the current at the mouth of the estuary due to the confluence of tidal currents, currents from upstream of the watershed, and longshore currents so that sediment transport caused by longshore currents is retained and accumulates at the mouth of the estuary. At high tide, the current enters the estuary carrying sediment that has accumulated at the mouth of the estuary. At low tide, when the current speed is slower, it cannot bring the sediment back, so it settles in the estuary. In addition, the inflow of sediment from the upstream watershed into the estuary also contributes to the increasing sedimentation.

Abstract

Erosion is one of the most important things in watershed management, and is influenced by various natural and non-natural factors. Natural factors that affect erosion are: rain, soil type, slope length, and slope gradient. Land use is a non-natural factor that is influenced by various human activities. It is an important factor in calculating erosion that occurs in a watershed. The purpose of this study was to analyze (1) land use changes in the Winongo watershed, (2) erosion rate that occurs due to land use changes in the Winongo watershed, (3) the dynamics erosion classification changes in the Winongo watershed in 2001-2021 and (4) sedimentation that occurs in the Winongo watershed. The results of the study found a change in CP value from 0.61 to 0.65 which means that there was a change in land use in the Winongo watershed. An erosion rate of 22.78 tons/ha/year is classified as light erosion classification. During 2001-2021, areas with moderate, severe, and very severe erosion hazard classifications increased by 0.4% or 983.1 ha. The average of sediment produced in the Winongo watershed is 121,398.69 tons/year.
