Abstract

This study aimed to recognize to what extent grammatical errors occurred in undergraduate theses. A qualitative content analysis was employed on 25 theses reported by student-teachers. The writer hired the four steps of errors analysis proposed by Ellis (1997). To adjust to the study's purpose, the two significant taxonomies of errors - the linguistic category and surface taxonomy strategy – were used to make the errors easily classified and explained. Interviews were also conducted to student-teachers and their theses advisors. The deep interaction between the writer and the theses was done by reading them intensively to ensure truthful data. It was found 1397 erroneous sentences that were spread out into simple, compound, complex, and faulty sentences, and they derived 2278 grammatical errors. In relation to the ways of language learners make errors, they were broken into five pieces of the process: omission, misinformation, addition, misordering, and selection. The next findings were source of error issues which consisted of interlingual errors (transfer of structure) and intralingual ones (overgeneralization, incomplete application of rules, false analogy, misanalysis, exploiting redundancy). The results of discussion on the findings led to reflect the student-teachers language status, mainly their writing skill in the position of developmental stage. For accuracy, there are three ways to respond these errors: error corrections, strategy training, and grammar instruction in the context of academic writing. A proto syllabus of Thesis Writing course is proposed to facilitate students in producing adequate thesis.

Abstract

The aim of the study is to investigate the students’ perception of autonomous English learning. This research is explanatory in nature whereby a mixed mode of quantitative and qualitative approach are employed in different sectional respectively. Quantitative data is the main method of this study, while qualitative data used to support quantitative data based on Implicit Theory. In this research, quantitative data were obtained from the students' survey by filling questionnaires on the self-assessment checklist. Meanwhile qualitative data obtained from interviews. The data were obtained in the form of interviews and students' surveys. A survey research was conducted by collecting 235 questionnaires from students and afterward, the researcher interviewed 9 students. To analyze the data collected from the questionnaire and the interview, the researcher used descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. The results indicate that students perceive themselves as autonomous in English learning. Students of English study program are relatively better at understanding instructors teaching objectives and requirement and monitoring the use of learning strategies. Additionally, they are relatively weaker in setting up personal learning objectives and study plans, using learning strategies in an effective way and monitoring and evaluating the English learning process.

Abstract

This study evaluates how library promotion strategies can shift primary students from campaign-based participation to sustained reading habits. Conducted at a primary school in Indonesia, the research employed a qualitative descriptive design using observations, semi-structured interviews with librarians, teachers, and students, and document analysis of logs and circulation records, and photographs if available, to document implementation processes closely. Data were coded inductively and triangulated across sources. Three key initiatives emerged: interactive read-aloud sessions, a curated reading corner, and a daily 15-minute independent-reading routine. Together, these initiatives were associated with increases in library visits and borrowing frequency. Read-alouds modeled fluent reading and introduced new vocabulary; the reading corner broadened interest-aligned choice; and the daily window normalized sustained reading. Constraints that moderated impact included limited collection breadth, constrained facilities and opening hours, and uneven teacher participation. Practical implications include pairing read-alouds with brief discussion prompts, maintaining a regularly refreshed, student co-curated reading corner, institutionalizing a short daily reading slot with light scaffolds, and formalizing teacher-librarian planning for collection development and class-linked mini-lessons. The study contributes by reframing promotion from event-based outreach to routine-embedded practice and by clarifying the enabling conditions required to convert promotional visibility into everyday reading behaviors in primary education.

Abstract

Technological advancement has significantly impacted English language learning, especially in reading skills. However, there remains a gap between the utilization of technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and a comprehensive understanding of students' perceptions of its influence. This study aims to explore the perceptions of English Department students regarding the impact of AI on enhancing their reading comprehensions. A quantitative research method with a survey design was employed, involving 21 fourth-semester students. The instrument used was a Likert-scale questionnaire covering three key indicators: selection, organization, and interpretation. The findings revealed that students held a positive perception of AI in reading, with an overall mean score of 3.14. These results indicate that AI effectively assists students in selecting appropriate reading materials, organizing information, and interpreting texts more effectively. The study concludes that AI can serve as a beneficial tool in the reading learning process, although it cannot replace the crucial role of educators in shaping character and moral values. Therefore, it is recommended that educators and researchers consider a balanced integration of AI in English language learning.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of the Memrise application in enhancing students’ English vocabulary mastery in an Indonesian EFL context. Employing a quasi-experimental design, 60 high school students were divided into two groups: an experimental group that received instruction through Memrise and a control group taught with conventional methods. Both groups were assessed using pre-tests and post-tests, and additional data were gathered through observation checklists and student questionnaires. The results of normality and homogeneity tests confirmed that the data met the assumptions for parametric testing. A paired sample t-test revealed a significant improvement in vocabulary scores within the experimental group, while the independent sample t-test indicated a statistically significant difference in vocabulary gains between the experimental and control groups in favor of the former. Students using Memrise demonstrated greater engagement and consistency, and their positive perceptions further supported the application’s usability and motivational value. These findings suggest that integrating Memrise into vocabulary instruction can significantly enhance vocabulary acq uisition, offering practical insights for language educators seeking to incorporate mobile-assisted learning into the classroom.

Abstract

Academic writing is an important skill for EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students, but many still face writing anxiety. This anxiety makes students feel nervous, afraid of making mistakes, and often leads to procrastination or low confidence. The aim of this study was to explore the forms of writing anxiety and to see how a writing program could help reduce it. This research used a qualitative descriptive design with six undergraduate students from the English Education Study Program at a private university in Palembang, Indonesia. Data were collected through open-ended questionnaires, classroom observations, reflection notes, and students’ essays. The results showed four main forms of writing anxiety: fear of negative evaluation, difficulty starting, lack of confidence in grammar and vocabulary, and avoidance behavior. After joining process writing workshops, peer feedback sessions, and reflective discussions, students became more confident, less anxious, and their essays improved in organization and coherence. The program also encouraged them to collaborate and communicate better with peers. These findings suggest that supportive strategies such as process writing, peer feedback, and reflection are effective in helping EFL students overcome writing anxiety and improve their academic writing.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effect of using short video media on students’ reading comprehension among the tenth-grade students of SMA Negeri 10 Palembang. The research employed a quasi-experimental design involving an experimental group and a control group. The data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests administered to both groups, and the results were analyzed using SPSS version 25. The normality and homogeneity tests confirmed that the data met the requirements for parametric testing. The paired sample t-test showed a significant improvement in the reading comprehension scores of students in the experimental group after being taught using short videos. Furthermore, the independent sample t-test revealed a significant difference in post-test scores between the experimental and control groups, with a p-value of 0.033 (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that the use of short video media is effective in enhancing students’ reading comprehension. The study suggests that integrating short videos into English language teaching can increase student engagement, motivation, and overall comprehension skills. Therefore, the short video strategy is recommended as a practical and innovative approach to improve students’ reading abilities in EFL classrooms.
