Journal on English as a Foreign Language (JEFL) is a peer reviewed and open access journal on teaching and learning English as a foreign and second language. The journal follows a double blind review policy. The primary objective of this journal is to publish research based articles that delve into a comprehensive examination of the theories and practices involved in teaching and learning English as a foreign and second language. The specific focus lies on developing and non English speaking countries. The journal scope is international, extending a warm invitation to English language practitioners, academics, and researchers with diverse interdisciplinary perspectives. The journal publishes original research articles and review articles. The journal scope addresses English language teaching (ELT) and learning areas, including ELT pedagogy, ELT and learning resources, ELT and teacher professional development, English language teachers training and education, Academic writing in ELT research, Innovation in ELT, Language assessment, Literacy education in ELT, and Technology-based ELT.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of story maps used in process-approach on the achievement in writing narrative texts of junior high school students as perceived from their learning styles. A quasi-experimental design was implemented in seven meetings. Two existing second-grade classes of a junior high school in Malang City, East Java, Indonesia were selected to be experimental and control groups. The students in the experimental group were taught by using story maps when they followed process approach in writing narrative texts, while those in the control group were taught in the conventional method which was conducted through writing notes. There were 20 students in the experimental group and 13 students in the control group. Independent t-test was used to analyze the scores of both groups. The finding indicated that the difference is significant between the students

Abstract

The objective of this study is to develop Role-Playing Game (RPG) application as an alternative media in reading learning. The developed RPG application is based on Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC). The implementation of the developed RPG application is aimed to provide learning materials of reading skill in more attractive way to generate an innovative learning environment in which the students will not be uninterested in the learning process. The study is education research and development (R&D) which consisted of research and information collecting, planning, developing product form, expert validation, product revision, field testing and developing final product.

Abstract

Aimed at identifying what writing strategies four beginning authors used and examining how these strategies facilitated their writings, a collective case study describing and comparing the beginning authors was carried out to provide insights into the issue. The authors were teachers of English in English departments at four Indonesian universities, and were selected on the basis of a recommendation by the editor of some books in which their written products were published. To gain a far better understanding of the cases, two data forms (questionnaires and interview notes) were collected. The data gathered were repeatedly examined in order to discover some reoccurring patterns. The inductive process delineated the strategies used by the participants when dealing with academic writing. The results show that, in order of priority, the writing strategies employed in their initial writing careers were social, affective, compensation, and cognitive ones. This study contributes to the knowledge of social or contextual factors in writing English academic papers by illustrating which strategies were used and how in order to cope with the writing process. It also suggests writing strategies be adopted by future authors and built in the classes of English as a foreign language.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the possible factors inhibiting the university lecturers or professors in Indonesia from publishing their research results in reputable international journals in English. The research used a mixed (quantitative and qualitative) method, employing a national survey and in-depth interviews with selected lecturers and researchers in five different universities in Indonesia (i.e., Bengkulu University, Padang State University, Makasar State University, Unika Atma Jaya University and Mataram University). The results show that three main factors have hindered the lecturers from submitting their articles to reputable international journals: lack of self-confidence on the quality of their own research and article, finding it very difficult and very time consuming to prepare an article in English and no adequate reward for those who can successfully publish in reputable international journals. However, the majority of them have a positive attitude toward international journal publication for their own benefits or for the sake of their institution.
