Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The Design-Bid-Build (DBB) method remains entrenched in Indonesia's construction sector, despite recognized inefficiencies regarding project duration and coordination. The Design-Build (DB) method, offering enhanced integration by combining design and construction responsibilities within a single entity (the designbuilder), has emerged as a significant alternative. Although DB presents advantages, its implementation poses distinct challenges for both design consultants and contractors. This study aims to empirically identify the key opportunities and challenges encountered by design consultants and contractors participating in building projects utilizing the DB method in Indonesia. Employing a mixed-methods approach, quantitative data were gathered via questionnaires and analyzed using the Relative Importance Index (RII), while qualitative insights were obtained through interviews and subjected to descriptive analysis. The research focused specifically on design consultants and contractors involved in Indonesian DB building projects, yielding 8 consultant and 20 contractor respondents. Findings indicate that the primary opportunity for both parties stems from early and sustained collaboration inherent in the DB model, facilitating streamlined project execution. However, significant challenges persist that design consultants face, including compressed timelines for preparing bidding documentation and finalizing designs, while contractors encounter difficulties in securing timely design approvals and exercising adequate on-site project control. This research provides crucial empirical evidence on the specific dynamics affecting key stakeholders, contributing valuable insights for optimizing the implementation of the Design-Build procurement system within the Indonesian construction industry.

Abstract

This study examines the improvement of clayshale soil characteristics using a combination of Bledug Kuwu mud and emulsified asphalt. Clayshale is classified as problematic soil due to its expansive nature, low shear strength, and susceptibility to weathering and slaking. Stabilization aims to enhance soil stability, making it more suitable for construction. Unlike previous studies, this research investigates the synergistic effect of Bledug Kuwu mud, a natural waste material, with emulsified asphalt for soil stabilization to improve shear strength and unconfined compressive strength (UCS). The methodology involves collecting clayshale samples from Banten, which were subsequently stabilized in the laboratory using Bledug Kuwu mud at varying percentages (6%, 10%, 14%, and 18%) and 8% emulsified asphalt. Testing was conducted after curing periods of 0, 3, 7, and 14 days. The results indicate an increase in qu (unconfined compressive strength) from 0.410 kg/cm² to 1.919 kg/cm² and cu (undarained shear strength) from 0.201 kg/cm² to 0.960 kg/cm². The combination of Bledug Kuwu mud and emulsified asphalt enhances the soil matrix structure, reduces its expansive behavior, and improves resistance to moisture variation. This method has the potential to serve as a sustainable and cost-effective clayshale stabilization solution, contributing to improved stability and durability of infrastructure.

Abstract

The city of Meulaboh, as the centre of activity in West Aceh Regency, Indonesia, has experienced an increase in traffic volume, making unsignalled intersections prone to accidents, driven by conflicts of priority and low driving discipline. This vulnerability is triggered by conflicts of priority and low driving discipline. This study aims to analyse the performance of both intersections through a hybrid approach that integrates technical analysis based on PKJI 2023 with a road user perception survey. Technically, it analyses capacity (q), degree of saturation (DJ), and level of service (LOS). Socially, it examines driver behaviour, accessibility, and the effectiveness of law enforcement. Data was collected through field surveys to measure traffic volume and questionnaires distributed to a number of respondents to obtain perception and preference data. The results show that traffic flow (q) reached 1543.8 SMP/hour (KB Intersection) and 1664.6 SMP/hour (Peunaga Intersection), saturation degree (DJ) 0.52 and 0.61, and level of service (LOS) C, indicating near-saturated conditions. On the other hand, the road user perception survey revealed that 82% of respondents acknowledged that traffic violations were a common sight. Meanwhile, 76% of respondents assessed that law enforcement in the intersection area was still weak and suboptimal. The simultaneous implementation of PKJI 2023 and a social approach reveals that traffic overcapacity is not only caused by technical factors, but is also exacerbated by driver behaviour and weak enforcement of regulations. Therefore, it can be concluded that improvement efforts require an approach that combines infrastructure interventions with increased driving discipline and consistent law enforcement to achieve a sustainable transport system in the city of Meulaboh, West Aceh Regency, Indonesia.

Abstract

The slope stability of hillside roads in West Sumatra is often affected by the combination of weak soil conditions, steep topography, and high rainfall, which increase the pore water pressure behind retaining structures. One of the critical locations is found along the Tanah Badantung–Kiliran Jao Road section in Sijunjung Regency, which has a slope inclination of approximately 55° and consists of silty sand soil. The initial analysis indicates a slope safety factor (FK) of less than 1.25, suggesting the need for an adaptive soil retaining structure that can respond to local geotechnical and hydrological conditions. This study develops an adaptive design of a Retaining Wall that combines a gravity-type wall, a gabion toe structure, and an integrated drainage system to reduce pore water pressure. The drainage system includes a granular layer, geotextile filter, perforated toe drain, and weep holes as discharge paths. The results show that adding a gabion with a height of 1–2 m and a stone unit weight of 18–22 kN/m³ increases the sliding safety factor from 1.29 to >2.0 and the overturning safety factor from 5.4 to >5.5, while the bearing safety factor slightly decreases but remains safe (FK ≥ 3). This adaptive design effectively improves slope stability and drainage efficiency in compact silty sand soils.

Abstract

Reinforced concrete structures are among the most widely used construction types in Indonesia and have been proven to possess good resistance against seismic loads, particularly through the implementation of the Strong Column–Weak Beam (SCWB) concept, which requires column capacity to exceed that of beams. Concentrically loaded columns, which carry pure axial loads without bending moments due to eccentricity, play a crucial role in ensuring ductile structural behavior. Previous studies have shown that the compressive capacity of columns is influenced by the longitudinal reinforcement ratio, stirrup spacing and configuration, as well as cross-sectional shape. Closer confinement spacing can enhance compressive capacity, while variations in cross-sectional shape yield different structural responses. In this study, a finite element method based on the fiber element approach is employed to analyze the behavior of reinforced concrete columns under concentric axial loading. This method models the cross-section as uniaxial elastic–plastic fibers to capture nonlinear behavior in detail. The load–deflection curves from the fiber element analysis exhibit a trend closely matching the experimental results. Concrete stresses reached ultimate levels, while steel tensile/compressive stresses reached yield at mid-span of the column. The ultimate load values from both the analysis and experiments were greater than those prescribed by SNI 2847:2019.
