Abstract

This study attempted to explore teachers' attitudes toward the role of multicultural studies in reducing students prejudice in an ethnically diverse classroom. An interpretive case study approach was applied in the project. The subjects were primary school teachers who had teaching experience in multicultural classrooms. Data were collected by interviews, analyzed by using a thematic analysis and then validated by extracts from the teachers' reflective writing. The findings of this research showed that teachers had positive attitudes toward therole of multicultural studies in reducing students prejudice. Teachers clearly believed in the value of teaching multicultural studies for prejudiced students

Abstract

The main purpose of this research was to know the impact of double shift learning at Senior High School (SMU). The sample consisted of 8 SMUs in East Kalimantan selected purposively. Data were collected from students and teachers by a questionnaire, documentary study and interviews, and analyzed in percentage measures. The result showed that the teachers' productivity was low. The students' capability on morning shift was better than those on afternoon shift. The teachers and the students tended to resist the double shift system in their SMUs. There were many obstacles in school administration.The number of students in state SMUs was more than in private sMUs.

Abstract

This expost facto study was aimed at knowing the intensity of Subject Matter Teachers Convention (Musyawarah Guru Mata Pelajaran, MGMP) activities, frequency of training, degree of basic competence in instruction, and teaching performance of Senior High School (SMU) teachers. The study was carried out at State Senor High Schools (SMUs) in Malang municipality. The sample consisted of 104 out of 514 teachers from 9 SMUNs drawn randomly. Data were gathered by administering a questionnaire and then analyzed statistically by applying the path analysis. The result showed that teaching performance was influenced directly by intensity of MGMP activities and degree of basic competence in instruction, and indirectly by frequency of training

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze oral reading error episode in the elementary school, consisting of reading error, reaction of the reader, and feedback of the teacher. The subjects were teachers and students of the second and third grade of SDN Deresan 1 and SDN Ungaran 1, Yogyakarta. The data were collected by observing and recording oral reading activities. Descriptive statistical technique and loglinsar technique were employed to analyze data. It was found that the biggest number of oral reading error type was hesitancy. The biggest number of the sutdent's reaction toward their error was to stop for a moment, and the biggest number of interactions between class and oral reading error, class and students' reaction, school and teachers' feedback, and class and teachers' feedback

Abstract

This study was based on the "controlled" speeches and term papers of students of the English Education, Sriwijaya University. The subjects were 20 students of the fifth semester, who were taking speaking V in the year 1994/1995. They were taken from 80 students as the population. Two approaches were employed in the study: description and analysis. The study described the kinds of errors found both in spoken and written data. Then, it analyzed the sources of the errors. It was concluded that the subjects were good as their errors did not exceed 10% in terms of the total sentences they made in speaking as well as in writing. Speaking and writing errors were relatively the same in terms of the kinds of errors and their causes. In terms of speaking, the students could be in scale 3. In writing, the students could belong to level 3, that is, minimum professional proficiency.

Abstract

This study was conducted to reveal primary school students' mastery of the concept of fraction and its seven sub-concepts. Sample of this study consisted of 160 fifth grade students purposively recruited from primary schools in the Municipality of Ujung Pandang and the District of Sinjai, South Sulawesi. Data were collected by means of a test on the mastery of concept of fraction consisting of 28 items. Results of the study indicated that in general the students had not yet mastered the concept of fraction sufficiently. Only in some of the seven sub- concepts the students' mastery was good but in other sub-concepts the students' mastery was poor to very poor.

Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to explore values applied by students in choosing a career and the ways in which the counselors help students in choosing a career and the ways in which the councelors help students use the choices. This study applied qualitative method. Data were collected by participatory observations and indepth interviews with students, their parents, and the councelors of Senior High Schools (SMU) in Malang, Sidoarjo, and Probolinggo. It was concluded taht the students successful in their career applied their personal, social, vacational, educational, leasure-time, religious, and democratic values in choosinga career. The approach applied by the councelors in helping their students was the Process Skill Approach, and the methods used were lecture, dialog or discussion, clarification, assignments, study tour, role playing, and career day.

Abstract

This research was designed to identify cooperations implemented by Secondary School of Technology (STM) and industrial enterprises and to explore problems faced in the cooperation. In this cross sectional survey, the sample consisted of 10 out of 21 Secondary Schools of Technology (STM) implementing dual system of education in East Java. Data were collected by a questionnaire and interviews and then analyzed statistically in percentage measures. It was concluded that the planning of cooperations in the dual system of education included administrative, academic, and curricular aspects. In general, implementation of the planning was good enough, but there were so many problems faced by those participated in the dual system of education

Abstract

This study examines the potential of content area textbooks as a lexical environment for incidental vocabulary learning. The two questions proposed are how many rarely-used words content area textbooks contain within a particular number of words, and how different or similar the frequency of rarely-used words is in the linguistic studies and non-linguistic studies textbooks. This study concludes that content area textbooks contain a relatively high frequency of words within Nat3 and Nat4 levels. The high percentage of rarely-used words indicates that content area textbooks are rich sources for vocabulary learning. The findings also suggest that different kinds of textbooks in the content courses can be rich lexical environments for the study of second language vocabulary
