Abstract

This study was designed to explore human conflict, its causes, and its managerial strategies in educational management. The study involved leaders in elementary, secondary, and higher education. A qualitative approach was applied in this study. Data were collected by in-depth interviews, observations, and documentary techniques, and then analysed by componential and thematic analysis. The result revealed that conflict seemed to be an integral part of the practices of education. Human factor was a dominant factor affecting the conflict. In managing the conflict, the leaders of elementary education tended to take the same efforts and media, while the leaders of secondary and higher education tended to select strategies relevant to the type or causes of conflict and other considerations.

Abstract

The vital role of English as an instrument to speed up national development justifies substantial efforts to improve the instruction. Learners of English in Indonesia suffer from difficulties since the language environment does not support them. Compensating tha lack of environment does not support them. Compensating the lack of environmental support with good quality of English instrustion in the primary and secondary schools would need a huge budget that the Government could not afford. Therefore, the target of the efforts should be limited to a smaller but more prospective population: university students

Abstract

The 1994 English curriculum has been implemented since the 1994-1995 academic year at the secondary schools. In order to implement the curriculum well, teachers and others concerned should understand the principles underlying the development of the curriculum. Implications of implementing the curriculum should also be considered very carefully so that optimal results can be expected. Four areas of implications will be discussed in this article, namely: teaching and learning activities, the training of English teachers, the teachers' lesson plans, and the evaluation procedures. In addition, two of potential problems of implementation will also be discussed

Abstract

The major objective of educational activity is to prepare and help our generation to be adult persons. There are too many problems faced by educators, most of them are born from the absence of educator's charisma. It is not esay to identify our educational problems properly, but we offer a phenomenological approach to be applied to find out the implicit phenomenon within or behind the explicit ones. In this approach, educational problems can be understood objectively by gramatical and historical interpretations, and subjectively by individual and generic interpretations. It is also offered a number of avtivities based on this phenomenological approach to find out the basic structure of educational problems

Abstract

This study examined one program which was in place in a multi-track year-round elementary school, a tutoring program delivered during the students' intersession. Through interviews, surveys, and analysis of grades recorded on report cards, the program was evaluated to determine whether goals for the program were met. Survey data revealed that students, parents, and teachers all felt overwhelmingly that the program was effective at meeting stated program goals. Report card data did not show a statistically significant increase in grades after students attended the program, but many intervening variables were not controlled for. Additional convenience factors, such as transportation, cost, and timing contributed to the program benefits

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to develop entry level tests and to identify the level of competency of IKIP Padang freshmen as measured by the test. These tests were used to measure the 1997 IKIP Padang freshmen in the respective majors. The result was not surprising as it was found that the entry level knowledge of the freshmen in the respective subject matter area was quite low. At the second assessment, after one semester study, although the gain scores of those freshmen were statistically significant, the absolute value of increase in the test scores was relatively low. It was hypothetically explained that it may happen due to the fact that the curricula of the subject major is not directly related to pre university learning or that the learning process at IKIP Padang is not effective.
