Abstract

As something generally considered private, sex and its surrounding activities are something rarely discussed, especially in a country like Indonesia where such is just taboo. This study undertakes the exact opposite of that, discussing how male “sex buyers” share their prostitution-related stories to their online community called Malang Nightlife. This study concerns how language is used by a certain community in their collective repertoire(s) as a representation of a proactive action showing a liking or support for prostitution. Accordingly, lexico-semantic analysis is the primary treatment given to the data, complemented with views on multilingualism and sociopragmatics to contextualise these intrinsic linguistic features in their naturally social settings. The findings suggest that 1) the community has quite strict rules regarding how members are allowed—and not—to share their story; 2) they often use four-way multilingualism in telling their stories (i.e. Indonesian, Javanese, English, and Basa Walikan Malang); 3) the members have several common tendencies and conventions in telling their stories; 4) these stories seem to be constructed from personal or collective repertoires each member has access to or have familiarity with. The conclusion drawable from this study is closely related to public’s stereotypes towards males and their sexual wrong-doings, up to the point of objectifications by these said males to the female prostitutes they refer to in their stories.

Abstract

Indo-European languages are the focus of this study which emphasized the influence of those languages on the Indonesian lexicon and linguistic diversity. In order to reach the goal of this work, diachronic and synchronic analysis were employed. Diachronic analysis referred to the theory of loanword form reconstruction stated by Mallory & Adams (2006) and borrowing process theory by Campbell (1998), while the synchronic analysis included loan type identification mentioned by Swe (2013). Consequently, the existence of Petjuk or Petjoh was identified as the diffusion of Dutch and Indonesian. There are also Portuguese family names which spread widely especially in East Indonesia and loanwords found. These loanwords are derived from mostly Germanic, while Indo-Iranian, Italic and Hellenic contributed also. Germanic languages, e.g. Dutch, German and English, and Portuguese as part of Italic supplied more loanwords for their long-lasting existence throughout the archipelago in the past during their colonization, while Indo-Iranian such as Sanskrit, Pali, Persian and Hindi gave their influence for coming into contact with Indonesians through trading activity. The only one Hellenic, e.g. Greek, and other Italic which are Latin and French became the donor through luxury loan for the need Indonesians acquire to translate some new terms which couldn’t be accommodated by Indonesian itself.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop the Multimedia System for Accelerated and Assisted Integrated Reading (SMAART), an interactive learning application specifically designed to support high school students with literacy disabilities. Utilizing the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model, the study only reached the development stage. This study followed a systematic development process to ensure the application's pedagogical and technical effectiveness. The analysis phase identified key literacy challenges through teacher interviews and student observations, while the design phase incorporated multimedia principles to create an engaging and accessible interface. During development, the application was built using Articulate Storyline 3, integrating text, audio, and visual elements to accommodate diverse learning needs. Expert validation was conducted with media specialists (assessing usability and design) and literacy educators (evaluating content relevance), resulting in high scores for display quality (4.6/5) and instructional effectiveness (4.4/5). User feedback highlighted the application's intuitive navigation (89% satisfaction rate), interactive exercises, and motivational multimedia components. The evaluation phase confirmed the effectiveness of SMAART as a complementary tool for literacy education, especially for students with learning disabilities. Its success underscores the potential of adaptive multimedia technology to promote inclusive education. Future research could expand testing to broader demographics and explore AI-based personalization. Ultimately, SMAART offers a scalable model for digital literacy interventions, aligning with the School Literacy Movement (GLS) initiative in Indonesia and addressing the gap in accessible learning resources for students with disabilities.

Abstract

Suppressed during the New Order, Indonesian Islamic literature often used Sufi symbols. Explicit Islamic expression flourished post-1998, transforming Muslim life by merging religion and entertainment. Employing qualitative method, this study analyses three post-New Order works—Jilbab Traveler, Bumi Cinta and Geni Jora—selected for their: gender-diverse authorship, commercial success, and representation of 2000–2019 Islamic-literary trends. Using close reading, the analysis identifies thematic patterns about trends in Islamic thought through textual examination of narratives/dialogue, theme codification, and critical synthesis to construct the research argument. Analysis reveals that Islamism can now be openly expressed with the emphasis of three issues: Islamic cosmopolitanism, moral agents and individual freedom. Jilbab Traveler and Bumi Cinta advocate Islamist ideas, promoting sharia enforcement—especially for Muslim minorities in non-Muslim/secular settings—and seeking to restore Islamic supremacy through exemplary protagonists. Conversely, Geni Jora reflects post-Islamist thought, emphasizing aqidah, civil rights, equality, individual freedom, and life's enjoyment.  Overall, post-New Order Islamic literature shows a greater inclination toward Islamist ideas, stressing strict sharia adherence and rejection of Western lifestyles. These works assert that Muslims must follow Sharia rigorously and resist Western influence to reclaim supremacy. While advocating religious sovereignty, they do not explicitly demand a caliphate. Some works, however, exhibit post-Islamist elements by negotiating belief with modernity, seen in celebrating individual freedom.

Abstract

This article examines the transcultural intertextuality in Wing Kardjo’s sonnets “L’Éducation Sentimentale,” which reinterprets Gustave Flaubert’s novel with the same title and Mochtar Lubis’s novel Jalan Tak Ada Ujung. Using Julia Kristeva’s intertextuality framework,  the study examines how Kardjo adapts Lubis’s prose narrative into a sonnet form and reinterprets the thematic, narrative, and stylistic elements of Flaubert’s and Lubis’s novels. Through critical, comparative, and intertextual analyses, the research focuses on Kardjo’s innovative transformation of prose into structured poetic forms, preserving themes of love triangles, guilt, and political conflict. The results demonstrate how Kardjo repositions Lubis’s narrative within the structured form of sonnets and reframes Flaubert’s themes within Indonesia’s socio-political and cultural context. Through recontextualization and transformation, Kardjo creates a hybrid literary work that bridges French and Indonesian traditions, offering a transcultural dialogue that juxtaposes postcolonial struggles with existential disillusionment. This study concludes that Kardjo’s sonnets exemplify transcultural intertextuality as a creative process, enriching comparative literary studies and fostering cross-cultural dialogue through poetic innovation.

Abstract

Gender education is one of the efforts to promote the welfare of humanity. Many institutions prioritize the empowerment of women as a key solution to overcoming disparities between women and men in various fields. This study aims to analyze the educational thoughts of Ki Hadjar Dewantara through his work, Tembang Macapat Wasita Rini. Content analysis of Tembang Macapat Wasita Rini highlights the importance of education for women in achieving both physical and spiritual independence, self-mastery, and preparing women to make decisions in their lives that benefit their families and communities. This poem also contains moral messages urging women to maintain themselves in accordance with societal norms, thereby avoiding various dangers and being able to empower themselves according to their potential. Ki Hadjar Dewantara demonstrated wisdom in responding to the development of education in his time by supporting the ideal of women’s emancipation, balanced with an emphasis on the importance of upholding norms and values aligned with women’s natural roles within the social and cultural context of that era.

Abstract

This research examines the metamodern audience reception of Nizar Qabbani’s modern Arabic poetry through Instagram Reels, with a focus on the emergence of metamodern sensibilities in the response to his poetry. The study employs a reader-response approach and is multifaceted, integrating literary reception theory with the concepts of Jauss and Iser’s reception theory while also incorporating metamodern sensibilities to analyse audience responses. The analysis of audience comments reveals that the fusion of three domains (Jauss reception, Iser reception and metamodern sensibility) provides a comprehensive understanding of metamodern audience responses. The findings demonstrate that the amalgamation of Jauss and Iser’s reception categorised into the following three domains: (1) historical perception and reality of fiction, (2) horizon of expectation and implied reader, and (3) aesthetic distance and blanks, in combination with metamodern audiences, generate meaning through multiple types of responses, which researchers have categorised into various types. These categories reflect the intricate interplay between Jauss’s macro-level form of reception, Iser’s micro-level form of reception, and the articulation of metamodern sensibilities.

Abstract

Children’s understanding of the relationship between humans and the environment is a significant factor in fostering ecological awareness, which forms the foundation for future environmental coservation efforts. This research aims to describe and identify place-attachment as an effort for environmental conservation in the Bait al-Ahdhar children’s story series based on Lawrence Buell’s ecocriticial perspective. The type of research used in this study is descriptive qualitative with the ecocriticism approach. The primary data source is the Bait al-Ahdhar children’s story series by Hadil Ghanim and Walid Tahir, with additional data drawn from books, journals, and relevant scientific articles. The data collection technique involves a thorough reading and note-taking process. The data analysis technique employs the Miles, Huberman and Saldaña model, which consists of data condensation, data display, and conclusion/verification. The results of this research indicate the presence of four dimensions of place-attachment as a conservation effort in the children’s story series Bait al-Ahdhar: (1) Concentric Areas, as evidenced by a child’s greater concern for the cleanliness of their bedroom compared to their house and the surrounding streets, (2) Local Archipelagos, as evidenced by a child’s concern for the school environment based on a sense that school is like a second home, (3) The Historicity of Places, as evidenced by a child’s concern for the worsening environmental changes in the city, and (4) Temporal Accumulation, as evidenced by a child’s concern for the school environment based on learning and playing experiences in previous class. These findings suggest that place-attachment may serve as a solution for children in environmental conservation.
