Abstract

This study examined male allyship in Hidden Figures, focusing on how male characters support women’s empowerment in a racially and gender-biased workplace. Using the theory of male allyship proposed by Burrell & Morin (2025), it aimed to identify the forms of allyship and analyze their impact on women’s professional advancement. Employing qualitative content analysis, this research analyzed scenes that depict men’s supportive actions towards women facing structural discrimination. The findings revealed that male allyship took various forms, including fostering social capital through mentorship and sponsorship, confronting anti-diversity, equity, and inclusion (D.E.I) pushback with confidence and facts, leveraging resources to support development opportunities, clarifying that D.E.I did not promote unqualified candidates, positioning D.E.I as a competitive advantage, being visible advocates for inclusion, and sharing narratives that highlight the tangible benefits of D.E.I. These forms of allyship empowered women by creating opportunities, removing systemic barriers, and positioning diversity, equity, and inclusion as essential to organizational success. The study concluded that allyship grounded in fairness, respect, and integrity demonstrated that supporting women’s empowerment did not diminish masculinity or leadership credibility but instead strengthened collective achievement and built gender-inclusive environments.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the conceptual operation strategy of artificial intelligence (AI) metaphors in Indonesian mass media using cognitive linguistic studies. This research uses a qualitative approach with Christopher Hart’s Cognitive Linguistic–Critical Discourse Studies (CL-CDS) analysis method. Data sources came from online mass media articles that have a major influence on public opinion in Indonesia. Data were collected using documentation study techniques and analyzed using four CL-CDS strategies, namely structural configuration, framing, identification, and positioning. The results indicate that AI metaphors in mass media not only frame the way humans perceive AI capabilities and functions but also reflect the ideology and power behind current technological developments. This demonstrates the use of technological ideologies to support an agenda that enlarges society’s dependence on technological systems controlled by large corporations or the state while reinforcing existing power structures. This research contributes to providing insights for media practitioners, policymakers, and academics on the effective use of metaphors in conveying information about AI while considering its ideological and social impacts. Future research recommendations include analyzing the role of social media in framing AI, as well as investigating the ethics and social impact of AI discourse in the mass media.

Abstract

This study investigates how spatial and temporal deixis shape readers’ understanding of Ronya Othmann’s Die Sommer (2020), a novel alternating between German and Kurdish settings and perspectives. A qualitative analysis of deictic expressions identifies forms of spatial deixis (e.g., specific place names; vertical references like “sits on the floor” vs. “starry sky above”; and dynamic movements) and temporal deixis (e.g., historical years, seasonal markers, tense shifts, and temporal adverbs). Results show spatial deixis anchors Leyla’s story in intercultural spaces, guiding reader orientation and evoking her bicultural identity amid historical conflict. Temporal deixis places events in the general political and historical context, linking personal biography to collective memory. This study presents deixis as a narrative device that enables deeper reader involvement in a transcultural storyworld. By integrating Bühler’s and Ehlich’s deixis theories with narrative analysis, it contributes to understanding narrative structure, complex intercultural dynamics, and multiple cultural perspectives in contemporary transcultural literature and narratives.

Abstract

The concept of mortality has mystified humanity for civilizations, resulting in many arts in which mortality is the central exploration. Often, discussions of mortality are intertwined with religiosity, as faith offers understandings of death and salvation. Hence, this study (1) examines the themes of mortality in two poems entitled “Immortality” by Clare Harner, published in 1934, and “I’m Free” written by Anne Lindgren Davison in 1974, and (2) uncovers the association between the poets' religious beliefs and their attitudes toward death in their poems. Guided by Bassnett's (1993) comparative literature, this study applied a descriptive-qualitative approach, drawing on Wellek and Warren’s (1956) intrinsic and extrinsic elements in literature. Findings reveal that Harner’s “Immortality” is rich with Gypsy religious influence, whereas Davison’s “I’m Free” is strongly affected by the values of Abrahamic religions. The poets’ different uses of intrinsic elements reflect their distinct religious beliefs. Although both poems use a singular first-person point of view and focus on consolation and upliftment, Harner utilizes natural imagery, while Davison uses religious imagery. These illustrate how the poets’ religious backgrounds influence their exploration of mortality, providing poetic insights into death and the beyond.

Abstract

The mastery of Collocation would support the achievement of a good language proficiency. However, the existence of collocations  in German language Textbook is often not recognized by either learners or teachers. Therefore, a study was needed to map the presence of collocations in German textbooks for beginners. This was a descriptive qualitative study using a textbook analysis approach. The theoretical framework was based on Hausmann's work (1984) on Basic-Collocator Model. The German textbooks Beste Freunde A1 and A2, which contain naturally occurring collocations in their texts, dialogues, and exercises, served as the data source. The research instrument was human instrument. Data validity and reliability were obtained through repeated readings and focus group discussions. The results of the study showed that: (1) the total frequency of collocation occurrences was 1524, distributed evenly from Beste Freunde A1.1 to A2.2; (2) there were eight forms of collocations, with the most frequent form being the combination of a noun and a verb. Based on type, the most common type of collocation is lexical collocation; (3) semantically, the meanings of the collocations could be grouped into school and education, holidays and travel, and leisure and vacation. These books offer authentic input essential for developing native-level language proficiency.

Abstract

The evolving and persistent gender constructs in society have greatly disadvantaged women, placing them in a subordinate position and limiting their choices in life. These negative impacts have prompted women to rise and fight for gender equality, a struggle not only in the real world but also in fictional works such as Maria A. Sardjono's novel Hati Seorang Perempuan. This novel features an independent female protagonist who upholds women's self-esteem and rejects the gender construction system imposed by society. In contrast, the male protagonist in this novel is portrayed as a figure who highly upholds the gender construction system in a society steeped in patriarchy. However, the gender construction believed by the female and male protagonists in the novel is not absolute but full of instability. Therefore, this study aims to identify the instability of female and male constructions in the novel HSP. Based on the analysis, it was found that the strong, independent female character that does not care about society's views, as formed by the female protagonist in the novel HSP, cannot completely break free from society's perspective, the biological need to love and be loved, and self-fragility. A similar phenomenon occurs in the male protagonist, where the construction of men as selfish and placing women in a subordinate position, as portrayed by the male protagonist in the novel HSP, is ultimately not fixed and is full of instability, as seen in the male protagonist's logocentric opposition.

Abstract

Pantun has symbols that represent the culture of the Malay community, including in pantun meminang. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to reveal the symbolic meaning of Malay Sambas pantun meminang in relation to Islamic symbols, love, and culture. This study employs a descriptive qualitative research method with a semiotic approach. Data for this study were collected through interviews with four respondents from the Sambas Malay community who are familiar with marriage pantuns. Based on the analysis results, it can be seen that there are symbolic meanings that indicate Islamic symbols, love, and culture in the pantuns. The findings regarding Islamic symbols include mentioning the name of Allah and greetings. Findings related to the symbol of love include expressions of love and the strengthening of relationships, while findings related to culture include the culture of maintaining relationships and the culture of proposing marriage. This study successfully revealed these three symbols comprehensively, unlike previous studies that addressed them separately, making it a valuable reference for relevant institutions in conducting in-depth interpretations of pantun, particularly pantun meminang.
