Abstract

Abstract. Artificial blood-feeding using the parafilm-M membrane can be used as an alternative solution andsubstitute live animals as a source of blood. This method is not only be used for blood-feeding but also to infectthe dengue virus (DENV) to mosquitoes. This study was aimed to determine the effectiveness artificial bloodfeeding using parafilm-M membrane in Aedes mosquitoes originated in Indonesia and determine the positivityof mosquitoes infected by Indonesia DENV-1. DENV-1 was isolated from patient and propagated in Vero cellculture. The feeding was done in cardboard cups after mosquitos have been starved for 4-17 hours before beingfed with human blood. A conical 50ml tube was prepared, and a hole was created in the tube lid. The tubeopening was covered with parafilm. Glycerol was added into conical tube and heated in water bath for an hourat 55oC. A mixture of blood and DENV-1 was made with concentration of 10%. Detection of DENV in bloodfedmosquitos was carried out by using Simplexa Dengue Real-Time RT-PCR assay. The results showed thatthe prevalence of blood-fed mosquitoes reached 66.67% with fasting period for 17 hours. Blood feedingmosquitoes are affected by duration of fasting period, blood-feeding time, and attractants from human skinrubbed into parafilm-M membrane. The prevalence of blood-fed Ae. aegypti infected by DENV was 20.83%.This study provides information on the effectiveness of artificial parafilm membrane blood-feeding in alaboratory setting that will be useful for vector control study in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract. West Karawang is a part of Karawang District that have high case incidence in three years later. This research uses cross sectional study method was conducted that aimed to gain information of mapping DHF endemic region use GIS (Geographic Information sys-tems) as a part of surveillance informatics system 2008. The special goals are to know the spatial aspect of the movement pattern , socio-demographic, larvae index, vector control programs, land systems and precipitation. The results of study are movement pattern of DHF in West Karawang is local, the socio-demographic of sex and marital status there are no special different, group of class age 15 – 44 years old (53,70%), non-formal working (81,48%) is the highest. The socio-demographic of education Senior High School (38,89%) is the highest too. Almost of The housing type permanent (94,44%) is the dominant and the average wide building 50-100 meters (66,67%) is the highest. House index larvae is 55,10% and container larvae index is 15,51%. The vector control program of fogging in study area 70,37% is done and PSN program activity (81,48%) this fact shown that there are many possibility for breeding place in this district. The Use of GIS helps to handle huge of data easily and much more information can be display clearly.

Abstract

Abstract. Culex quinquefasciatus mosquito is increasing problem of public health, being the vector responsible for West Nile Virus and Filariasis. Clorpirifos (Organofosfat) and Metonil (Carbamat) were known to posses insecticide activity against insect. The study was aimed to examine effectiveness of Klorpirifos and Metonil as larvicide against C. quinque-fasciatus larval. Klorpirifos a significantly higher larvicidal activity against 3th-4th instar larvae of C. quinquefasciatus than Metonil. The larval mortality was observed after 24 h ex-posure. The LC95 value of Klorpirifos and Metonil were 3,139 mg/lt and 9,045 mg/lt, against C. quinquefasciatus. The mixed of both insecticide was LC95 value 2,823 mg/lt. The result of this study suggested that Klorpirifos more effective larvicide against C. quinquefasciatus than Metonil.

Abstract

Abstract. Adiarsa Barat village is one of endemic area of the Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever (DHF) in Karawang. That village had not touched by community empowerment yet. The purpose of this research was to know effectiveness of housewives empowerment for eradication of DHF with breeding site control. This research was an experimental quation, with intervention in one location and control in other. The final result was hoped that the respondents would increase of knowledge, attitude and practice. The data of housewife behaviour was collected by intervew. This research found that there was the increase of housewife’s group behaviour, followed by the increase of housewifes behaviour at intervention area with P value < 0,05. Although housewifes behaviour at control area hasn’t increase with P value > 0,05.This reaserch suggested that people participation needed to be identified first then monitored periodically, so that their behaviour to eradicate DHF disease would be a habit or permanent.

Abstract

Abstract. At malaria high endemic area, oftentimes appear a malaria carrier (without clini-cal symptom) due to antibody parasite existence on blood as caused the frequently of contact human with malaria parasite. To detect prevalence of malaria carrier, it had been conducted a study at Pamotan and Bagolo villages with blood microscopically examination for malaria parasites existences. The study’s results were showing is both villages are malaria high endemic area because is found 3.48% among blood sample is positive parasite Plasmodium falciparum. The citizen in 1-5 year age group and also adult group (> 15 year) with job as housewife and coconut sugar worker are highest risk to malaria attack than the others. Furthermore was suggested, that the highest risk group citizen must be priority in every malaria programs, and also be suggested to conduct periodically survey to find and treat a malaria carrier to prevent ma-laria case appearance and avoid malaria out-breaks.
