Abstract

This paper will briefly explore the main discourses about the triune God in the development of Christian theology to propose some theological moderation about the Divine mystery which Augustine called as the beauty ever ancient but ever new and increasingly alluring. Some of the moderation approaches offered by the author in this article are first, the talk about the Triune God, though imperfect, is finally done so that those who believe in it do not remain silent about mysteries that are very close but also far transcending in their faith and life experiences. Second, ethical kriteria are needed as principles that could guide theological effort so that theologies will be able to produce positive impacts on the real life of all creation. Third, the need to be aware of the limitations of symbols, expressions, metaphors, definitions and discourses about God for God transcends human understanding (apophatic theology). Fourth, because God is a mystery beyond the reach of human understanding, therefore, it needs to be realized that no theology is absolute and monopolizing all discourses rather it is necessary to talk about God in various ways and symbols in order to complement one another. Fifth, apophatic awareness that God is incomprehensible leads to the humility of mystical theology. The study in this paper will begin by briefly describing the development of the theology of the Trinity from the Early Church to the Enlightenment, followed by critical notes and proposals developed by contemporary theologians on the discourse about the Triune God and end up with a concluding note in the form of a way of moderation in doing theology.

Abstract

Problems faced by Muslim are increasingly complex. Challenges of modern life cannot be simply overcome by quoting the old religious interpretations, which are no longer irrelevant, but also have often created new problems. How many acts of terrorism, violence, discrimination, and de-humanization have been performed by referring to the religious texts? In fact, religious interpretation that destroys human values should be abandoned, and be replaced by interpretations which glorify and humanize human beings. One of main devices must be empowered for interpretation is reason (mind, ‘aql.) Through reason, a person not only can formulate relevant Islamic interpretation suitable to the era’s needs, but also can find the truth. Only by utilizing reason, amid strong tendency of scripturalism, Muslim people will succeed to create high civilization. Proven from human’s history, nations which have marginalized the role of reason would be in the darkness stage. Therefore, Islam continues to challenge mankind to use the reason. The prophet was sent to erect reason, and he says, “Al-dīn ‘aql lā dīna li-man lā ‘aqla lahu” (religion is reason, and no religion for who does not use the reason.)

Abstract

This article explains that Ibn ‘Arabī professed the transcendent unity of religions which is shown by the data on unity of essence, unity of the divinity, unity of source or origin of the path, unity of source of the scriptures, unity of purpose of worship, and the Religion of Love. This study finding shows in a strong way that the unity of religions lies in the transcendent or esoteric territory, i.e. it goes beyond formal religious forms such as religious law, sharī‘ah, doctrine and ritual. On the historical forms of religion there are many differences and even conflicts one each other. Though different in form, these differences among religions are not absolute, independent and separate, but bounded by a single entity, i.e. both from God Almighty, and will culminate in Him as well. However, on the historical form Ibn ‘Arabī claimed the perfection of Islam, and simoultaneusly criticized the religion and non-Islamic beliefs. This last fact has been ignored by the scholars, both Islam and the West, who believe the theory of the transcendent unity of religions.

Abstract

This article wants to show that science based on positivism contains many weaknesses, which are proven by critics of positivism from Western philosophers, such as Karl Popper, Thomas Kuhn, Feyerabend and Rorty. The reaction of these figures placed them in a post-positivism flow, a movement of resistance to positivism in various domains ranging from ontology, epistemology to methodology. Thus, Islam can be an alternative offer to develop science.

Abstract

The absolute truth of religion concerns only in revelations which are revealed (matluw) and which are not revealed (ghairu matluw). The basis of this thought is that change is a must in the history of the universe including humans. This because every element of the universe always changes. The change itself is aimed to keep Islam alive as a guide so that Muslims can survive in the world and the hereafter. To ensure that Islam remains relevant to the dynamics of life, Islam must open up and respond to the change. The renewal of Islamic thought in this article will be traced from the basis, goals and development of Islam in the future. The renewal of Islamic thought is not a new but has occurred since the time of the Prophet as the case of the Prophet's dialogue with Muadz b. Jabal. The dialogue has opened the horizon to renewal of thought in order to maintain the relevance of Islam in response to changes in space and time.

Abstract

Mysticism or sufism is an activity that is focused on the esoteric aspect of Islam. It is totally different from the orientation of fiqh and sharī‘a which are more directed to the exoteric in Islam. Cosmology is the origin of the universe and the occurrence, and Ibn ‘Arabī is one of the sufi who discussed the issues of universe. In the works of Ibn ‘Arabī, the term of ‘ālam is translated by the Western researchers with cosmos. The cosmos or universe is defined as everything other than Allah (mā siwā Allah or al-Ḥaqq.) Ibn ‘Arabī’s cosmology essentially is called as prophetic cosmology (apostolic.) This knowledge is a form of knowledge that was transmitted from the Prophet Ādam to the Prophet Muḥammad, however, in grounding it, Ibn ‘Arabī limited it to the prophetic knowledge in the Qur’ān and Ḥadīth.

Abstract

Women’s identity of Aceh is an important entity within the contemporary political condition of Aceh. Many problems are faced by Acehnese women, when they meet a regime having bias gender in manifesting Islamic sharī‘a which is already formalized within the qanun (formal regulation in Aceh.) Many qanuns have hampered women’s activities and identities. Debates arose questioning whether Islamic sharī‘a should be formally legalized or it is just sosial ethics. This study, for its basic references, bases on literatures already written by researchers who studied sharī‘a and Aceh. After the data found from those literatures, hence they are analyzed by textual and content analysis.
