Abstract

This article propounds a study on Ibn ‘Arabī through theological approach. The study will show that Ibn ‘Arabī is a follower of Sunnī theology. This hypothesis can be proved via genealogical structure towards Ibn ‘Arabī’s knowledge tradition which is complex, and by tracing his statements containing theological expressions within his works. Nonetheless, it cannot be denied that his several words very potentially invite criticism and being considered infidel. However, in principle, those critiques come from critics do not have spiritual background as owned by Ibn ‘Arabī. Or there had been another assumption, i.e. it is caused by ‘insertion’ from his intellectual rivals, as stated by Ibn ‘Arabī’s proponents. In fact, Ibn ‘Arabī himself asserts, “Who believes in hulūl, then his religion is defective.”

Abstract

The phenomenon of religious people and freedom to choose religion as a belief in life becomes freedom that cannot be bargained. The series of past history reminds religious people that the Presence of Religion is on the most principle principle, in order to be a solution in various aspects of human life, apart from the dark history of Religion which is ridden by the interests of power and vice versa on the power of Religion. Furthermore, the context of the past is a compass of the future of Religion which is burdened by every follower of Religion. The presence of Christianity as a Missionary religion and Islam as a Da'wah religion opened a space for religious social dialogue, because both were involved in Agamanization. Furthermore, the two characteristics possessed by each religion will certainly ignite the enthusiasm of Christian evangelists and preachers on the part of Islam to compete in assuming the truth of the perspective. The presence of this article will open a space for scientific dialogue to the two communities, in exposing the views and assumptions of Reverend Murtadin Saifudin Ibrahim who has an Islamic background and assumes that he is one of the Islamic leaders who then turned to become a Christian priest. Furthermore this article is not an Interference to Saifudin Ibrahim's new beliefs, but this article is to answer Saifudin Ibrahim's assumptions and views on Islam as the largest religion among religious people in Indonesia. In the end, hopefully this article can answer various obscure views and thoughts, and thoughts that intercept the faith in Islam in Indonesia.

Abstract

This paper discusses about re-reading the concept of jihad in the Quran, and focuses on investigating its ethical and practical aspects, followed by the explanation of hadith and books of tafseer dhahiri and bathini.  It is starting from several reasons; one of which is the emergence of radicalism that carries the doctrine of jihad. To know the meaning of jihad and variety of jihad and its purposed object in the Quran, the verses meaning and correlating with the study of jihad will be united and analyzed by using thematic (maudhui) theory. Having concluded, Jihad in the Quran is struggling unstoppably by sacrificing all of things that a servant has until reaching the struggled goals: struggling by soul, wealth, or everything that a servant has, with the intention to get the acceptance (ridha) of God (Allah). Having founded, the verses’ talking about jihad do not clearly mention their objects. There are only two objects that are mentioned clearly:  battling the unbelievers and hypocrites, but It does not mean, the only two objects that must be faced. By concerning other verses’ that do not mention their objects are much more than the verses’ that mention their objects, This means that Jihad must be not interpreted for only battling the unbelievers and hypocrites. However, it signs that jihad can be applied to all of the human’s activities keeping founded on Islamic doctrines which are dominated by mercies.

Abstract

One of the many important matters that is referred in the Qur’ān is a matter of the universe. The verses of Qur’ān invite people to observe and reflect on the creation of the universe, because in it there are signs of God’s existence and power. Cosmology is the theory about the origin of the universe. In Islam, this theory is one of the essential issues that have deep theological concequences and implications to the tawhīd. In order to formulate the process of the universe creation, the perspective of the Muslims was sorting into two extreme groups: traditionalists and rationalists. In the Islamic philosophy, in terms of the creation, the cosmology of al-Fārābī and Ibn Sīnā was influenced by the emanation of Plotinus’ philosophy and in terms of the structure is based on the concept of a geocentric Ptolomeus. While al-Ghazālī’s cosmology (representative of the traditionalist) based on the principle of the absolute will of God which is absolute. This study wants to reveal about the cosmology in the Islamic philosophers perspective as one of the cosmological mainstream which is speculative and revives the school of Aristotle, but not contrary to the principles of al-Qur’ān.

Abstract

Existentialism is indeed a very loose term, Sartre once state this in his famous lecture. But Sartre was saying how people use the term existentialism in his own age and culture. The problem would become more complex if we, instead of attributing this term to Sartre, Heidegger and another so-called modern existentialist philosopher, state that Mulla Sadra, a contemporary of Descartes, is also an existentialist philosopher, yes, he too, advocating the primacy of existence over essence. Despite much problems concerning technical vocabulary and the separate horizon wherein each existentialist philosopher dwell (i.e Sadra and Sartre), there is at least a similar problem that concern themselves. Particularly, as we will explore in this article, the problem of the self. Technical vocabulary and historico-spiritual horizon aside, there is an interesting intersection between the two's conception of the Self. Sartre explore the problem of the self in his Transcendence of the Ego, while Sadra here is only assumed.

Abstract

Doubtness on the importance of philosophy has spread out among intellectuals. Scientists even claim that philosophy already dies. By using thought of Jan Patočka, this paper elaborates how the philosophy still has its main role in human life, and its position cannot be replaced. For Patočka, philosophy is man endeavour to preserve his own soul. Soul perseveration Patočka means is ‘Socratic soul preservation,’ which emerges from human condition that is contradictive. In one side, man is limited creature, but on the other hand, he has relations with other world as whole. This situation makes him as the only creature who consciously perceives his limit. This conscience demands man to critically evaluate his every single thought and attitude. The Socratic soul preservation is to question every single given-comprehension. To continuingly question will make soul in unison and harmony. Therefore, the function of philosophy is not to give objective anwer, but to empower man from inside, so he is brave and powerful to face problems in his life.
