Abstract

This article deals with the Qur’ānic interpretation offered by Majelis Tafsir Al-Qur’ān (MTA). It tries to answer several questions: to what extent MTA has interpreted the Qur’ān, how it fits (or does not fit) with its ambitious claim that it does not offer any kind of Qur’ānic interpretation, and how this interpretation demonstrates the development of MTA’s thought in understanding the Qur’ān. This article reaches the conclusion that, although MTA claims not to interpret the Qur’ān, in fact it has made such a certain degree of interpretation of the Qur’ān. Its puritan ideology seems to have played a considerable role in colouring its Qur’ānic understanding. As a result, the claim that it does not interpret the Qur’ānis not reliable and even tendentious.DOI: 10.15408/ref.v13i2.896

Abstract

Human beings and the environment are entities whose existence is natural and ordained. Naturally, a relationship has been established between them since the creation. The quality of the relationship between humans and the environment is determined by the quality of human thought, behavior, and conduct within their surroundings. The standard for evaluating the goodness or badness of this relationship is not solely determined by humans unilaterally, but by an absolute standard, which is the law of God (Sunatullah). This is a consequence of humans being chosen and appointed as stewards of Allah in maintaining the balance of life on Earth. This writing explains the intended relationship, which is capable of building a holistic system of righteousness to achieve peace and prosperity blessed by the pleasure of Allah SWT.

Abstract

Abstract

This writing attempts to uncover the common ground between the West and Islam in one concept that each possesses, democracy and shura. Both are different concepts of statehood, as democracy comes from the Western tradition that has become an ideology whose values are relative as it is not based on revelation. The main characteristic of democracy is decisions supported by the majority vote. On the other hand, shura is derived from revelation (the Qur'an and hadith), so its values are absolute (as long as it concerns principles). The common ground between the two lies in their emphasis on consultation in resolving matters that involve the public.

Abstract

Hermeneutics, or the understanding and interpretation of the role of religion in the context of individual or societal life, positions religion as one of the guiding principles alongside others. In this position, the role of religion is subject to controversy, with at least two major groups: those who consider it important and those who see it as an obstacle to human life. Figures such as Nimrod, Pharaoh, Sigmund Freud, Karl Marx, Nietzsche, and others, in their respective emphases, view the socio-political role of religion as hindering societal progress, threatening the power and systems established by religious, cultural, or political elites. Conversely, another significant group does not doubt the role of religion in human life at all. Religion serves as guidance for humans towards salvation and happiness in both the worldly life and the hereafter. This article seeks to examine the important role of religion (specifically Islam) in all aspects of human life as an actualization of Islam's mission as a mercy to the entire universe, with a strong social dimension.

Abstract

This article states that an approach of Western philosophy in understanding the Qur’ān contextually can be performed to grasp meaning which is much suitable with today condition and in a place we live (here). In this relation, hermeneutic is one of the approaches of Western philosophy used by several contemporary Muslim scholars such as Fazlur Rahman,Mohammad Arkoun, and Naṣr Ḥāmid Abū Zayd. Abstract

In societal life, problems arising from interaction processes are inevitable. Various interests flowing through diverse cultures within society do not always end in conflict and violence. There is harmony and unity that can emerge from social interactions. This is evident in Javanese society, which emphasizes the principles of harmony in its social relations. In Javanese society, the relationship between humans and God is seen as a unity and harmony. This harmonious relationship serves as a model for the relationship between humans and society. Efforts to achieve harmony are made by maintaining order within society. Thus, the unity of the individual and society implies the existence of order. Threats to this harmony include personal ambition and desires. Someone in society who is too ambitious and prioritizes personal desires is considered a threat to social order.

Abstract

The social conflict between natives and ethnic Chinese seems to have become a historical destiny of this country. Even before independence, conflicts between the two had already occurred. Various efforts have been made to stop the conflicts, which often ended in violence, but the conflicts themselves never seemed to cease. This paper seeks to offer an approach to reorganize the potential conflicts into positive potentials by examining the socio-historical aspects that cause the points of contention between natives and ethnic Chinese. From there, a nation-building that is aspired to is not just a symbol of sovereignty but is truly felt by all citizens without being trapped by ethnic, tribal, racial, or religious barriers.
