Abstract

In this article, Habermas's thought will be discussed in three parts. First, the continuity and discontinuity of Habermas's thought with his predecessors will be examined. Second, a general overview will be provided of the relationship or differences in the paths of Marxist thought in general and Habermas as a thinker who adheres to Marxist thought. Third, the discussion will delve into the theoretical realm concerning Habermas's central concepts that distinguish him radically from Marxist and neo-Marxist thought in general.

Abstract

This writing is based on the generalization of understanding towards hadith. It means that all hadiths are understood in the same way without distinguishing the structure of the hadith, whether it is transmitted by wording or meaning (riwayat bi al-lafzh or riwayat bi al-ma’na), the absolute or relative field of the hadith’s content (related to creed and worship) or relative (related to transactions). Hadiths are often only understood with textual interpretation techniques, with only a small portion expanding them with contextual interpretation techniques, both historical and sociological contexts, as an idea. In this context, the understanding of the Prophet’s hadith needs to consider several things, including Prophet Muhammad as the source of information, the companions as recipients of information, the form and scope of the meaning of the Prophet’s hadith, events surrounding the emergence of the Prophet’s hadith, and the social and community conditions that occurred at that time.

Abstract

This article elaborates on the bicameral parliamentary system in Indonesia, which is a new step, considering that until now the Indonesian Parliament adhered to a Unicameral (single-chamber) system, namely the DPR (People’s Consultative Assembly). Whereas now (as a result of the 2004 Elections), it has produced members of the People’s Representative Council (DPR) and the Regional Representative Council (DPD) which will later become two chambers.

Abstract

This essay highlights numerous serious efforts made in the last decades to find out mathematical miracles of the Qur’ān. While it recognizes that some of the findings resulted from these efforts might be problematic in terms of accuracy, methodological consistency and even legitimacy, this essay emphasizes the potential of these inquiries to enrich the academic discourse on miraculous aspects of the Qur’ān (i‘jāz al-Qur’ān) -an already longstanding subject in the ‘ulūm al-Qur’ān. Mapping the approaches to put the Qur’ānic mathematical miracles into some broad categories, and giving a glimpse into its history and underlying assumptions, the essay examines some theological, epistemological and methodological issues in each category, pointing out some reasons to either appreciate or criticize these approaches.DOI: 10.15408/ref.v13i2.899

Abstract

Many things need to be considered when developing knowledge in human life. On one hand, knowledge plays a crucial role in every aspect of human life; the exploration of knowledge has provided a series of conveniences in human activities, and technological advancements resulting from scientific knowledge have accelerated human mobility. However, on the other hand, the development of scientific knowledge and its role has seemingly undermined human existence. Scientific knowledge is no longer just explored but exploited to the fullest. As a result, scientific knowledge has threatened and even destroyed human existence. This article discusses the need for a paradigm that will guide the development of scientific knowledge to remain constructive in human life.

Abstract

This paper discusses ethnography, a qualitative research method commonly used in anthropological and social science studies to understand social phenomena in the field. One of the most notable American anthropologists who employed this method in studying Javanese religion was Clifford Geertz, along with his wife, Hildred Geertz. In the 1950s, Clifford Geertz conducted research in Mojokuto, East Java, leading to his well-known Santri-Abangan-Priyayi trichotomy, published in The Religion of Java (1960). Hildred Geertz, in the same period, studied Javanese family structures, resulting in her dissertation, later translated into Indonesian as Keluarga Jawa. Beyond Java, Clifford Geertz also conducted research in Bali, culminating in works such as Negara: The Theatre State in Nineteenth-Century Bali (1980) and his famous essay on Balinese cockfighting, Deep Play: Notes on the Balinese Cockfight (1973). His symbolic anthropology approach is often compared to that of Victor Turner, another prominent scholar who focused on African ritual processes, best exemplified in The Ritual Process: Structure and Anti-Structure (1977). This paper explores the ethnographic method by discussing its definition, historical background, objectives, procedural framework, and key considerations for its application in religious studies and social research.

Abstract

Master Chin Kung’s contribution to advocating for peace and interfaith dialogue is significant. He is not only a religious leader for the Buddhist faith but also serves as a role model for followers of other religions due to his steadfastness in promoting the universal values of religion. He believes that the goal of all religions is the same, which is to realize peace and compassion among all believers. As a result, Master Chin Kung, who has been awarded an honorary doctorate from UIN Syarif Hidayatullah, tirelessly urges world leaders to prioritize peaceful approaches over war. His extensive travels across five continents further drive him to continue advancing peace and harmony among religious communities. He firmly believes that religious education is the gateway to instilling greater love for peace and compassion in individuals. Therefore, he has established various institutions and foundations aimed at disseminating the universal values of religion. Among the foundations he has established is the Multi Culture Society in Jakarta. This foundation is highly active in organizing interfaith dialogue activities and multi-faith education.
