Abstract

This text explores psychology as part of the implicit message within the teachings of Islam. However, the psychological insights present in the Qur'an have not received serious attention. As a scientific discipline, psychology was only recognized in the late 18th century, but its roots can be traced back to the time of Plato. As a modern science, psychology has advanced significantly. The concept of “Nafs” (soul), which is a crucial aspect of psychological analysis, is mentioned over three hundred times in the Qur'an and Hadith, yet a horizontally oriented psychology did not emerge in the classical Islamic scholarly tradition. Scholars tended to discuss it more from the perspectives of ethics and Sufism, which are more vertically oriented. It was only in the 1950s that Muslim intellectuals, who studied in the West, began to show interest in the study of psychology. Furthermore, there have been efforts to offer alternative concepts of psychology, namely psychology from an Islamic perspective.

Abstract

This article delves into the pattern of interpretation or approach taken by Malik Bennabi in understanding the Qur'an. Malik Bennabi's approach to revelation is integral in nature. By examining Malik's work, "The Phenomenon of the Qur'an," Usman draws the conclusion that Malik Bennabi successfully provided a mature response to the challenges posed by Western philosophy and thought in viewing the Qur'an. By positioning the Qur'anic revelation as an objective phenomenon that transcends all historical contexts and various forms of socio-cultural backgrounds, Malik Bennabi was able to address Orientalists who denied and sought to sow doubts about the truth of the Qur'an as the revelation of God. Malik Bennabi responded to Margelyouth (an English Orientalist) and his colleagues who regarded the Qur'an as a product of Prophet Muhammad or a copy of the Torah and the Gospel, or who claimed that the Qur'an was influenced by both of these covenant books. Through his work, Malik Bennabi also indirectly rejected the philology of Christoph Luxenberg (a German Orientalist) who came much later, accusing the Qur'an of being originally written in Aramaic rather than Arabic.

Abstract

The visualization of the Hell’s Tortures both in Buddhism and in Islam is exactly similar. However, their kind of ‘theological’ tendencies may result different outcome. By comparing the visual narration of the Buddhism and Islamic comic books dealing with hell illustrations, I made an‘imaginary’ dialogue between the concept and visuality of hells tortures that exist in both traditions, and see the impact on how far a sincere dialogue could be achieved in these two religious people. During this comparison, I found that both Buddhism and Islam in Java had ever made such an interesting dialogue. Keywords: Hell tortures, Islam-Buddhism comparison, encounter of Java-IndonesiaDOI: 10.15408/ref.v13i1.995

Abstract

The modernization of Sunnah is an effort to renew the interpretation of Sunnah by purifying it from all kinds of superstitions, innovations (bid’ah), and myths. The modernization of Sunnah is divided into several areas of study, namely Sunnah related to social life, Sunnah āḥād which has a status of zhannī al-dilālah (probable indication), and Sunnah with an unclear status. Additionally, the modernization of Sunnah must be undertaken by experts in the sciences of Sunnah and Hadith, both in terms of narration (riwāyah) and comprehension (dirāyah).

Abstract

Abstract

The companions were the ones who witnessed the revelation, but they did not share a uniform perspective in understanding the text of the revelation. This phenomenon indicates that the complex situations and conditions during their time led to differences in the interpretation of the text. Therefore, the diversity of religious paradigms is inevitable. The main issue is that Islam, as understood by the companions, was an open Islam, not a rigid one. Islam was open to accommodating local ethnic values that were undoubtedly in line with Islamic law. This article attempts to elaborate on the various religious paradigms of the companions through a socio-anthropological approach.

Abstract

In the realm of Political Science, there are various models for selecting leaders of a government. Some involve direct elections, while others rely on representation. Similarly, within Islam, there is diversity in the models of leadership selection. This diversity emerged after the passing of Prophet Muhammad, particularly during the era of the Rashidun Caliphs. This occurred because neither the Quran nor the Hadith provide explicit and detailed instructions regarding the process of selecting a head of state. This article examines the paradigm of leadership selection during the era of the Rashidun Caliphs. It delves into the selection systems for the four caliphs: Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali, each of whom, according to the author, had distinct differences. Furthermore, the article provides a comparative analysis between several modern political systems and the concepts espoused by Islam.

Abstract

This article explains how the ellipsis (ḥadzf) theory performs in Qur’anic translation. It explains the philosophy, theory and manners of ḥadzf, and the formulation of deleting word (maḥdzūf) in the sentence (jumlah). This sort of article puts more attention on studying the verse of 125 Surah al-Naḥl [16]. This study shows that ḥadzf can fill the empty space of Qur’anic translation, and its interpretation. It is open for everybody to give his interpretation. However, it requires several conditions to formulating the deleted word (maḥdzūf). Eventually, this article concludes that study of ḥadzf is important in translating al-Qur’an which can make the renders easier to understand the messages of al-Qur’an.

Abstract

This article shows that the accuracy of using Ḥadīth, as a tool to interpret the Qur’ān, is really helpful in interpreting the Qur’ān intextual way. The application of Ḥadīth, as an interpreter, should be used in proportional, professional, and contextual manners. Through studying the Ḥadīth by those three prerequisites, this writing simultaneously enforces an opinion stating that the Qur’ānic interpretation through bi-al-ma’tsūr is the best one, rather than through bi-al-ra’y.DOI: 10.15408/ref.v13i3.908
