Abstract

Among the great mystics in history, Ibn al-‘Arabi (560-683/1165-1240) stands out as one of the most influential. His mystical ideas, particularly the doctrine of Waḥdat al-Wujūd (Unity of Being), spread throughout the Islamic world and left a profound impact on Sufi philosophy. This paper explores the influence of Waḥdat al-Wujūd on Islamic thought in the Nusantara region. It examines the historical development of this doctrine, identifies key Sufi scholars who embraced and disseminated it, and analyzes the factors that facilitated or hindered its acceptance. Additionally, this study considers the future trajectory of Waḥdat al-Wujūd in Nusantara, assessing its relevance in contemporary Islamic discourse.

Abstract

Through its characters, the essence of Hindu teachings can be found, namely “universalism,” “tattvam asi,” “ahimsa,” “svadhes,” “moksa artham jagat hita ya ca iti dharma,” and so on. Its universality gives rise to the understanding that all religions are the same and true. There is no one religion that is the best and truest. All religions are the same, none is higher, nobler, and more sublime. Hindu teachings and views on religion and peace in a multicultural perspective actually have no problem. In other words, the peace intended can certainly be realized in reality. Because, from the beginning, since around 6000 BC, Hinduism has lived and developed until now, characterized by its universality.

Abstract

In the Qur’an, the term “futuwwah” refers to “an ideal, noble, and perfect person, one whose hospitality and generosity are endless until they have nothing left for themselves, someone who selflessly gives everything they own, including their own life, for the sake of their companions.” In the perspective of Sufi mystics, futuwwah signifies heroic generosity, praiseworthy conduct following the example of the prophets, saints, sages, companions, and lovers of God. This ideal is perfectly exemplified by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Several examples of the tradition of generosity are seen in the character of Prophet Ibrahim, who obediently followed Allah’s command to sacrifice his son for the sake of Allah.

Abstract

This paper attempts to appreciate the work of an ex-priest who now is a Muslim author, Jerald F. Dirks, entitled Abrahamic Faiths. In the context of comparative religion studies, the writer (Kautsar Azhari)asks: is this Dirks’ work a comparison or competition of religions? Kautsar concludes that the work tends to be a competition in between the Abrahamic religions. However, the match was a friendly match. Dirks’ book, even though apologetic and polemical in character, is served in polite way and style, and is a work trying to reconcile between the children of AbrahamKeywords: God, theology, monotheism.DOI: 10.15408/ref.v13i1.990

Abstract

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is known as the most successful prophet in fulfilling his mission. He was appointed as a messenger at the age of 40, a mature age. This indicates that such a title and status were not achieved without struggle, but after he matured and was tempered by many experiences. This article attempts to address questions about the success of Prophet Muhammad's leadership, asking whether all of the Prophet's successes were due to God's intervention. If God is involved, what makes Muhammad special? Doesn't that mean Muhammad did not undergo a process like an ordinary human? If he is “not an ordinary human,” then how can we emulate and consider him as a role model in leadership?

Abstract

This paper explores the topics of tawhid and destiny, examining the relationship between Allah and humanity. In this discussion, several important questions arise, such as: To what extent does the power of Allah the Almighty relate to human actions? Do humans have freedom in their actions, or is everything predetermined by Allah’s will, making humans like puppets that do not move without the puppet master’s direction? Has Allah predetermined the course of human life from the beginning? And is the fate of humans, both good and bad, already decided by Allah, with humans merely living out their destiny? Other relevant questions include whether the determination of entry into paradise or hell is an divine decree. Through analyzing these questions, this paper aims to explore the dynamics between Allah’s power and human freedom, as well as its implications for our understanding of destiny and moral responsibility.

Abstract

Waḥdat al-wujūd means: the Unity of Being, meaning that there is only one existence, which is the existence of Allah. The plural forms observed in the world are illusions that dominate the limitations of the intellect. This concept was born in Spain (Andalusia) or the western Islamic region, and then spread to the eastern Islamic regions. Its notable figure is Muḥy al-Dīn Ibn ‘Arabī. From this concept of waḥdat al-wujūd arose the idea of the perfect human (insan kamil). This idea can be found in Fushush al-Ḥikām and Futuḥat al-Makkiyah.
