Abstract

Palm oil is one of the leading commodities, and Indonesia is one of the largest palm oil producers in the world. Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunches (OPEFB) are the solid waste from palm oil industry activities. The cellulose content in EFB can be used as a substrate for anaerobic decomposition to produce volatile fatty acids (VFAs). In this study, chemical pre-processing (NaOH 8% w / V) was used for the delignification of EFB before being processed in anaerobic fermentation. Digested cow manure (DCM) is used as an inoculum. Process optimization to produce VFAs is a challenge because VFAs are intermediate products in the metabolic pathway of anaerobic decomposition towards methane formation. This study examines the potential of VFAs from EFB by varying the temperature against the EFB anaerobic fermentation process to produce VFAs in batch reactors. The temperature variations studied were mesophilic (29 °C) and thermophilic (55 °C) conditions. Empirical molecular formulas can predict VFA potential with a reaction stoichiometric approach. As a result of the calculation, the VFA potential of EFB is 44.5x10-2 mg.mgTS-1. Experiments showed that thermophilic conditions resulted in VFAs 60% higher than mesophilic, as seen from the percent completion of RT reaching 59% and closer to the theoretical potential.

Abstract

Tarahan Village is one of the larger villages in Katibung District, South Lampung. Despite not being classified as an agricultural region, Tarahan Village exhibits remarkable productivity in cultivating vegetables and fruits. So far, organic waste from fruits and vegetables has been discarded and burned or used only for animal feed. The large volume of unprocessed fruit and vegetable waste causes various problems for village residents, both directly and indirectly. Besides that, the village's intensive horticultural farming activities have encouraged the increased use of inorganic fertilizers. This pollutes the environment and harms the soil, organisms that live in the soil, and humans who consume these horticultural products. The application of liquid organic fertilizer, specifically POC, is deemed necessary to effectively address the issue of fruit and vegetable waste management while ensuring the quality of organic horticultural products. A composter is a suitable technology employed for the production of liquid fertilizer. Since oxygen is crucial for microorganisms in decomposing organic matter, the POC produced through the aerobic composting process will mature more quickly and not produce offensive odors. The goal of implementing this technology is to spread the word that garbage can be turned into something valuable if managed properly, leading to a cleaner community and more economic opportunities. The rotary POC technology scheme consists of a plastic drum that is supported by an iron structure. The drum is furnished with a rotating lever designed for the purpose of stirring, thereby facilitating the uniform mixing of organic material upon the addition of the bioactivator. The agitation of the solution facilitates the efficient execution of the aeration process. The equipment scheme has been developed with the aim of enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of composting with regard to both time management and the quality of the final outcomes. This technology has the potential to be an alternative solution for dealing with household waste, and the product in the form of POC has the potential to reduce the use of inorganic fertilizers.

Abstract

Soybeans (Glycine max) are a type of legume with moderately high fat content. Appropriate and safe types of solvents are essential in extracting fatty acids for consumption. This study aims to find an alternative solvent to replace n-hexane for extracting soybean oil and analyze its lab-scale production cost. Soybean oil was extracted by soxhlet extraction using ethanol, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane with a soybean-to-solvent ratio of 1:4 and 2:4 (w/v) and an extraction time of 1 and 2 hours. The results show that solvent polarity and soybean: solvent ratio affect the yield and density of the resulting extract. The greater the soybean-to-solvent ratio, the more oil is extracted until equilibrium. The highest yield was 36.25%, obtained at a material-to-solvent ratio of 2:4 (w/v) within 2 hours with ethyl acetate, and the oil density was 0.92 g/mL. The Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrophotometry (GC-MS) analysis on the sample with the highest yield showed that the fatty acid composition was 34.36% linoleic acid, 22.12% palmitic acid, 19.40% stearic acid and 19.43% octadecadienoic acid. Ethyl acetate produces better yields and can be recommended as an alternative solvent to replace n-hexane for soybean oil extraction. The total extract production costs for 70% ethanol, 90% ethyl acetate, and 95% n-hexane solvents are IDR 780,847; 647,232; and 692,050, respectively.

Abstract

Coconut sap produced from coconut trees has a short shelf life due to contamination and undergoes natural fermentation. One way to extend the shelf life of coconut sap is by adding preservatives. This research aims to determine the effect of adding natural preservative extracts on the antioxidant value, pH, sugar, and alcohol content of coconut sap by adding natural preservatives. There are five samples: pure sap (NM); sap with sugar lime (NK); sap with sugar lime and cinnamon extract (NKM); sap with sugar lime and mango leaf extract (NDM); sap with sugar lime and noni leaf extract (NKD). The study was conducted by extracting natural preservatives, namely cinnamon extract, mango leaves extract, and noni leaves extract, using the maceration method. These natural preservative extracts were mixed with Ca(OH)2 in a 1:1 ratio and dissolved in distilled water. The mixture was then mixed with the sap. The results of the antioxidant test showed that the IC50 values of the NM, NK, NKM, NDM, and NKD samples were 52.911, 144.409, 26.043, 49.275, and 24.21 ppm, respectively. The highest pH value was found in the NK sample at 13.8, and the lowest in the NM sample at 3.8. The lowest sugar content was in the NM and NDK samples, with 10.6 and 14.6%. The highest alcohol content was found in the NK and NKD samples, with alcohol contents of 14.80% and 14.20%. This study shows that adding natural preservatives such as cinnamon, mango leaves, and noni leaves can increase the antioxidant activity of coconut sap, raise its pH, and maintain its sugar content to prevent it from being reduced to alcohol.

Abstract

Paper waste is one type of waste that is quite abundant. Effective processing of paper waste can be done using hydrolysis process because this process can decompose lignocellulose compounds in paper waste into simpler compound such as glucose and other derivative products. Hydrolysis process was generally carried out using chemical catalysts such as acids, bases and enzymes. In this study, paper waste hydrolysis was investigated using base catalysts such as potassium hydroxide (KOH) from palm oil empty fruit bunches (POEFB) ash and commercial KOH. The research stages began with the preparation of POEFB ash, KOH production from POEFB ash, paper waste preparation, and the hydrolysis process of paper waste using KOH from POEFB ash and commercial KOH. This study uses variations in hydrolysis time were carried out to evaluate the hydrolysis conversion. Based on the research, it was showed that KOH catalyst from POEFB ash contain potassium compounds in the form of 5.87% potassium oxide (K2O) and 31.45% potassium carbonate (K2CO3). Comparison of catalyst performance between KOH catalyst from POEFB ash and commercial KOH catalyst showed that commercial KOH catalyst was better than KOH catalyst from POEFB ash. The effect of hydrolysis reaction time was directly proportional to the conversion value that the highest conversion was 12.11% at 90 minutes using commercial KOH catalyst.
