Abstract

Abstract

Reflecting upon a decade of engaging with, researching, writing, curating and discussing critical and contemporary Chinese architectural developments (profession and projects), the author presents ‘adaptation’ as a modus operandus for Chinese architects to bypass both rapid cultural changes as well as a volatile and demanding building construction climate.  Seeking to understand the underlying concepts, methods and motives behind selected projects of four distinct contemporary practices (Amateur Architecture Studio, Atelier Chen Haoru, ZAO/standardarchitecture, Zhao Yang studio) the author discusses how these adapt to progress. Besides, the aforementioned practices encompass in China three distinct generations of architects, all practicing, to a large extent, in a similar spatial, social and economical environment. Focusing on the passage of time and the progress of the profession, rather than pointing out a figure or structure frozen in time, and through case-studies linked to the authors’ exhibition ‘ADAPTATION – architecture and change in China’ (Venice Architecture Biennale 2014), the paper seeks to discuss how architects effectively adapt and transform their thinking, practice and design in relation to ongoing demands and insights. Relating these to professional discourse, use of local materials and knowledge, to the volatility of clients, governments and markets, these alternative practices (alternative to the dominance of design institutes, to generic solutions and to Western, modernist, theories and practice) aspire to keep control over the design process. Across the four discussed practices, similarities in approach, materiality, methodology, educational and environmental concerns are contrasted with differences in architect-client relation, public appreciation, public and personal influence, laws, academic discourse. Through the lens of understanding how architects transform their modus operandi, tentatively the concept of ‘in(ter)depedent practices and projects’ (or mutual reliance between different generations of independent architects) can be explored.

Abstract

Design is an important step in construction project. Errors in design cause failure in construction stage as well as the project development. Misunderstandings of design concept between parties lead to design errors that able to decrease the quality of construction works, and also cause cost overruns and project delays. Design errors also contribute to engineering failures, which can result in accidents and loss of life. Preventive actions in reducing the errors are necessary. In accordance with these issues, this research is conducted with main purpose to identify the causal factors of design error. Review to previous studies with main topic of design error was taken in order to identify the causal factors. The factors were then validated in an oil and gas industry through observation in design process and also interview to parties whom have experiences in design process. Based from research, it is found that there are 5 main causal factors. The factors are man, method, material, machine, and environment. There are also several factors that are less in accordance with the conditions in the field such as cognitive dissonance, competitive tendering, and adversarial attitudes. By knowing the cause of the design error, can be done to prevent the effort of guarantee project sustainability.

Abstract

A condenser is one of the main equipment in a Combined Cycle Power Plant (CCPP) cooling system which has a great influence on steam turbine output and thermal efficiency of the whole power plant as well. The objective of this study is to analyze the effect of increase in condenser pressures on the heat rate and electricity production costs. The primary data is acquired from the DCS. These data are then compared to those of the best performance operating data. The differences of these two data of 23 parameters, are then integrated with the impact factor to gain the heat rate loss. Based on the heat rate loss, then the cost of electricity production is established accordingly. The study concludes that the increase of condenser pressure from 2.41 inHgA to 2.82 inHgA results in increase of plant heat rate 19.55 kcal/kWh. The 5 great parameters to contribute to this loss are: HP and LP steam flows, condenser pressure, stack temperatures of HRSG 1.3 and 1.2. Meanwhile, the cost of production rises up from 751 IDR/kWh to 805 IDR/kWh

Abstract

Surface-active molecules are widely used in industry. Triton X-100, sodium lauryl ether sulfate, sodium dodecyl sulfate and bovine serum albumin are commonly used in daily products. They can form foams because of adsorption phenomena at the surface. Each molecule has its own characteristic and foaming ability. This research deals with relation between interfacial properties and foamability by using three different methods: the Wilhelmy plate method to verify the CMC value, the maximum bubble pressure to determine dynamic surface tension, and the Bikerman method to assess the foamability. Interfacial properties and foamability will be studied and the difference observed between surfactant and protein will be discussed.

Abstract

The preparation of adsorbent using activated coconut shell was investigated at carbonization duration and adsorption contact time.  The coconut shell was activated using physical and chemical activation.  This research focused on variation of physical activation such as carbonization. The carbonization had two steps, there are high temperature and medium temperature. This research used 500oC at high temperature and 220oC at medium temperature. The duration of medium temperature was varied in 1, 2, and 4 hours. The chemical activation used H3PO4. The ammonia concentration of simulated wastewater around 6000 mg/l. The acclimatization period was 8 d. The coconut shell ability for ammonia removal was observed after acclimatization period in 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8d.  The effect of carbonization period and contact time on ammonia adsorption of dairy simulated wastewater was discussed in this research. This research used anaerobic digestion with 10 liter of volume. The concentration of ammonia was measured with nessler methods. Carbonization duration and contact time increased the adsorption capacity. From the obtained result of adsorption isotherm, the Langmuir equation was the best fit for all carbonization period, especially 4-hour carbonization period.
