Abstract

Background: Aedes albopictus skuse is an important vector of dengue fever and dengue hemorrhagic fever in Southeast Asia. Its distribution in Indonesia extends from Sabang (Sumatera) to Merauke (Papua) and is currently expanding. In response to a potential dengue fever outbreak in Indonesia during 2002, the susceptibility of 4 geographic populations of Aedes albopictus Skuse to commonly used mosquito adulticide (malathion) and larvicide (temephos) were assessed. Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the susceptibility status of each Ae. albopictus population to malathion and temephos. Methods: Eggs collected from 4 different geographic area in Indonesia, such as Padang (Sumatera), Yogyakarta (Java), Banjar (Kalimantan) and Timika (Papua) were reared to larvae and adults and were investigated by using bioassay (World Health Organization, 1981). The bioassay data were analyses using Probit analysis, which also corrects for mortality in the controls by Abott formula.Result: The Ae. albopictus mosquito population originate from Yogyakarta shows highest LC50 and LC90 malathion and temephos value, and the Ae. albopictus mosquito population originate from Timika shows lowest LC50 and LC90 malathion and temephos value than other population. Conclusion: There were insecticide susceptibility status difference of Ae. albopictus from diffetent geographic population in Indonesia (Padang, Yogyakarta, Banjar and Timika).Key words: malathion – temephos - Ae. albopictus - bioassay - Abott formula.

Abstract

Background: It has been discussed among ophthalmologists whether myopia is caused by environmental factors or hereditary. One of the environmental factors is the demand of work requiring frequent and close inspection with the eyes. Myopia may develop in eyes as an adaptation to reduce demands of physical type of work. Objective: To evaluate the difference of amplitudo of accommodation in many types of myopia, and the relation between amplitudo of accommodation and the degree of myopia. Methods: Subjects of the study were myopic patients in the Eye Polyclinic of Dr. Sardjito General Hospital, Yogyakarta from November 1,2000 to March 31, 2001. Subjects were divided into 4 groups: mild, moder-ate, high, and progressive myopia. Amplitudo of accommodation was examined with spherical minus method. Sex, age, family history, occupation, education level, and onset of myopia were registered, tabu-lated and analysed. Results: The subjects of the study consisted of 64 myopia patients: 16 mild myopic patients, 16 moderate myopic patients, 16 high myopic patients, and 16 progressive myopic patients. The average amplitudo o accommodation in the mild myopia group was 6.66 ± 1.28 D; the moderate myopia group was 5.03 ± 1.117 D; the high myopia group was 3.53 ± 0.59 D, and the progressive myopia was 2.89 ± 1.14 D. There was a significant difference for each group (p<0,001). There were negative significant correlations (r = -0,758) between the amplitudo of accommodation and the degree of myopia. Conclusion: There was a difference in amplitudo of accommodation for each group of myopia. There was a negative correlation between amplitudo of accommodation and the degree of myopia. Keywords : amplitudo of accommodation - degree of myopia - negative correlation - adaptation mechanism - hereditary factor

Abstract

A case control study was carried out in Sardjito General Hospital Yogyakarta to evaluate the risk factors for gestational trophoblastic disease. One hundred and seven cases of trophoblastic diseases fulfilling the inclusion criteria were included in this study. Data were obtained from the hospital medical record, and every case was conducted by 2 controls (normal delivery). It was found that woman age 19 years old and 35 years old showed the high risk trophoblastic. disease with odds ratio 7.85 and 6.6 respectively, parity 3-4 and . 5 increased the risk of trophoblastic disease with odds ratio 3.12 and 18.45 respectively, blood group A had odds ratio 3.17, and all of these variables showed statistically significant in bivariate analysis and multivariate analysis.Gravidity 4-5 and 6, last interval pregnancy 1-24 months and last pregnancy result with abortion had relative high odds ratio and statistically significant in bivariate analysis but not in multivariate analysis with stepwise logistic regression. There was a trend for increasing odds ratio with the increasing number of the history of spontaneous abortion, but not statistically significant. The study concluded that young (less than 19) and old (more than 35) women with high parity (more than 3), and with blood group A has a high risk to develop trophoblastic disease.Key words : pregnancy - trophoblastic disease - risk factor

Abstract

Background: Rhegmatous retinal detachment is an emergency case which will had to blindness if it is not managed properly. It could managed mostly by surgery. Many factors influence the success of the management. Objective: To know the difference of central retinal sensitivity changes after retinal surgery in new onset and long-term rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD)Methods: A prospective cohort study. Eyes with RRD which showed anatomically successful surgery were included in this study. RRD developed more than 24 days prior to surgery was considered as long-term RRD. Sample size was calculated based on the assumption that clinically significant central retinal sensitivity change was 5 decibels. Central retinal sensitivity was examined with Goldmann manual kinetic perimetry before and 3 months after surgery. Results: There were 35 eyes included in this study, consisted of 19 new onset RRDs and 16 long-term RRDs. The macula were involved in all of the subjects. The extent of retinal detachment ranged between 4 clock hours and 12 clock hours. PVR was found in 4 eyes. Two eyes (5.7%) underwent scleral buckling (SB), one eye (2.9%) underwent SB and posterior vitrectomy using silicone oil, and 32 eyes (91.4%) underwent SB and posterior vitrectomy using gas. Retinotomy was performed in 2 eyes and internal limiting membrane (lLM) peeling in 1 eye. Three months after the surgery, the mean change of central retinal sensitivity for both groups was 8.60 :I: 6.02 dB (range: -3 dB to + 23 dB), the new RRD was 6.9 :I: 5.57 dB, and the long-term RRD (p= 0.067) was 10.63 :I: 6.07 dB.Conclusion: The difference of central retinal sensitivity changes between new onset and long-term RRD was not significant clinically and statistically. However, both groups showed improvement of central retinal sensitivity. Keywords: retinal sensitivity - new onset rhegmatogenous retinal detachment - long-term rhegmatogenous retinal detachment - Goldmann manual kinetic perimeter

Abstract

This study was undertaken to compare the causes of abnormal vaginal bleedings in 1964 before the family planning program in Indonesia was introduced and in 1983 when this program was widely accepted:The samples were taken from the files of the Department of Pathology, Gadjah Mada University Medical Faculty, during the period of July 1 — December 31 in the years 1964 and 1983.The results suggested that in 1964 these bleedings were mainly caused by conception (52.9%), while in 1983 only 19.7% were caused by conception. In 1964 most dysfunctional bleedings were found in the perimenopause groups and in 1983 in the child bearing groups.Extended studies utilizing larger samples could provide further information about the role of ex - ogen hormons for contraception and therapy or hormons for cosmetic purposes, and also about endogenic factors; it would be necessary to work together with other specialists as well as psychologists.Key Words: abnormal vaginal bleeding - endometrial curettage - family planning program

Abstract

There has been a growing number of evidence that calcium antagonists provide a salutary effects in preserving kidneys against acute renal ischemia in patients at increasing risk. Their beneficial effects on cellular and mitochondrial calcium may explain the effects on renal hemodynamics and metabolics. It seems, that they do not directly vasodilate kidney vessels but alter the response towards vasoconstrictor agents. This effect may mediate diuretic and natriuretic effect of calcium antagonists. Effects on tubuloglomerular feedback and autoregulation mechanism in the kidneys play an important role in this regards. The above mentioned effects may provide a significant kidney protection and retard the progress of kidney disease. The results of recent studies show that calcium antagonists exert potentially. beneficial effects on several clinical settings including radiocontrast-induced nephrotoxicity and transplant-associated renal insufficiency, particularly cyclosporine A nephrotoxicity and ischemia during harvesting of kidneys.Key words: kidney disease - calcium antagonists renoprotective - hemodynamics - kidney function

Abstract

Background: Collagenase inactivation of keloid lesions is due to plasminogen activator inhibitors which are synthesized under stimulation of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a released protein under hypoxia conditions. On the other hand, ultraviolet B (UVB) may generate various oxidative molecules of irradiated chromophores. The effect of UVB in VEGF synthesis is unclear.ObJective. To know the effect of narrow and broad band ultraviolet-B on keloid fibroblast-VEGF expression. Materials and methods: Materials in this study were keloid materials collected from dermatosurgery and plastic surgery keloid revision. A parallel simple experiment study was performed to compare the effect of 0, 50, 75, and 100mJ/cm2 of broad band (BBUVB) as well as narrow band UVB (NBUVB) in VEGF synthesis of passage-3 keloid fibroblasts isolated from 4 patients. Samples were stained with monoclonal antibody anti VEGF. The selected DAB-brown colors of cytoplasm were computed based on Photoshop software histogram. Results: Compared to untreated group, all of various NBUVB showed a very significant (P0.05) between NBUVB and BBUVB groups. Conclusion: NBUVB as well as BBUVB can suppress VEGF synthesis among irradiated keloid fibroblasts. The 50 mJ/cm2 of NB UVB as well as 75 mJ/cm2 of BBUVB may be developed as the modality in keloid prevention or treatment. Keywords: keloid-fibroblasts, broad-band UVB, narrow-band UVB, VEGF
