Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk (1) mengetahui tingkat motivasi siswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris, (2) mengidentifikasi jenis motivasi yang siswa miliki dalam belajar bahasa Inggris, (3) menyelidiki alasan di balik siswa yang termotivasi dan yang tidak termotivasi dalam belajar bahasa Inggris di SMK N 1 Sukasada. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif dengan menggunakan analisis kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Subyek penelitian ini adalah siswa di SMK N 1 Sukasada dari kelas X dan XI . Sementara itu, objek penelitian ini adalah motivasi dalam belajar bahasa yaitu motivasi instrumental dan motivasi integratif. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa tingkat motivasi siswa berada di tingkat tinggi dan sedang. Jenis motivasi yang siswa miliki dalam belajar bahasa Inggris adalah motivasi instrumental dan integratif. Ada dua alasan mengapa siswa termotivasi dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Alasannya adalah (1) untuk mendukung karir mereka di masa depan, dan (2) untuk berkomunikasi dengan wisatawan. Ada satu alasan utama mengapa siswa tidak termotivasi dalam belajar bahasa Inggris. Alasannya adalah karena bahasa Inggris sulit terutama dalam memahami arti kata-kata bahasa Inggris / kosa katanya.Kata Kunci : Motivasi, Motivasi Instrumental dan Integrative This study aimed at (1) finding out the levels of student’s motivation in learning English, (2) identifying the kinds of motivation that students have for learning English, (3) investigating the reasons behind motivated and unmotivated student in learning English in SMK N 1 Sukasada. This study was a descriptive study using qualitative and quantitative analysis. The subjects of this study were the students in SMK N 1 Sukasada from tenth to eleventh grade students. Meanwhile, the object of this study was motivation in language learning namely instrumental motivation and integrative motivation. The results of this study show that the levels of students’ motivation were in high and moderate level. The kinds of motivation that students have in learning English were instrumental and integrative motivation. There were two reasons why the students were motivated in learning English. The reasons were (1) to support their career in the future, and (2) to communicate with tourists. There was one main reason why the students were not motivated in learning English. The reason was because English is difficult especially in understanding the meaning of English words/vocabularies. keyword : Motivation, Instrumental and Integrative Motivation

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisa relevansi dari materi pembelajaran dengan silabus dan tipe dari penggunaan strategi mengajar untuk mata kuliah Reading 1 di Jurusan Pendidikan bahasa Inggris. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah para dosen pada mata kuliah Reading 1 di Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dengan menggunakan daftar cek. Data dikumpulkan dari hasil daftar cek para dosen dan penguji ahli. Data didapatkan dengan analisa deskriptif. Temuan dari penelitian ini menunjukkan relevansi dari materi pembelajaran dan kriteria dari materi pembelajaran yang baik pada level "Sedikit relevan" untuk digunakan sebagai sumber belajar siswa Jurusan Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris. Berdasarkan hasil analisis dari dua penguji ahli yang menyatakan 30% dari kriteria yang telah tercapai. Strategi pengajaran yang sering digunakan pada mata kuliah Reading 1 adalah small group work, problem solving, cooperative group, performance activities, writing and inquiry based learning. Kata Kunci : kemampuan membaca, materi pembelajaran, strategi pembelajaran This research was conducted to analyze the relevance of instructional materials to the syllabus and the types of teaching strategies used for Reading 1 course in English Education Department. The subjects of the study were the lecturers in Reading 1 course of English Education Department, Ganesha University of Education. This research was a descriptive qualitative research by utilizing checklist. The data were collected from the lecturers and expert judges’ checklist. The data obtained were descriptively analyzed. The finding of the research showed the relevance of Instructional Materials and the criteria of a good material in the level of “Slightly Relevant” to be used as learning resource for English Education Department students. Based on the result of analysis from two expert judges stated 30% of criteria which had been reached. The teaching strategies that used frequently in Reading 1 course were small group work, problem solving, cooperative group, performance activities, writing and inquiry based learning.keyword : instructional material, reading skill, teaching strategies

Abstract

This research aimed to identify the EFL teacher’s personal characteristics that motivate the students in the classroom and to find out the students’ reasons of being motivated by their English teacher’s personal characteristics. The subjects of the study were 68 students of the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 1 Negara in the academic year 2014/2015. This research was designed in the form of qualitative descriptive research. This research used focus group discussion as main data collection, observation and note taking as supporting data collection in collecting the data. The result of the study showed that there were six English teacher’s personal characteristics that motivated the students in the classroom namely having a sense of humor, demonstrating professional responsibility, effective rapport (being friendly, being respectful, and being kind), being patient, caring and being creative. A humorous teacher made the classroom environment cheerful; the students were enthusiastic in listening the lesson; and increase the students’ willingness to learn English. A friendly teacher made the students feel so close to the teacher which made them comfortable in learning English and brave to ask something related to the lesson. A creative teacher could entertain the students which made the students enthusiastic (not bored), interested, and fun during the lesson so the classroom environment would be pleasant and made the students remember the lesson longer and feel challenged to finish the assignment. A kind teacher made the students enjoy the study. A patient teacher made the students brave to ask something or share their opinion. A professional teacher made the students easier to catch the material and become more disciplined in the learning process. A caring teacher made the students feel secured and better understand the lesson. A respectful teacher made the students confident.keyword : EFL, motivation, personal characteristics

Abstract

Penelitian experiment ini bertujuan untuk menemukan perbedaan yang signifikan dari pembelajaran berbasis proyek terhadap pencapaian menulis bahasa Inggris dari siswa kelas delapan di SMP Laboratorium Undiksha tahun ajaran 2015/2016 dalam menulis recount teks. Disain penelitian ini adalah post-test only control group. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalh seluruh siswa kelas delapan SMP Laoratorium Undiksha Singaraja yang terdiri atas 139 siswa dan dibagi menjadi empat kelas. Teknik pengambilan sempel acak diterapkan untuk menentukan kelas yang akan dipilih sebagai kelas control dan kelas ekperimen , yang menghasilkan kelas VIII 3 sebagai kelas ekperimen yang akan diajar menggunakan model pembelajaran berbasis proyek dan kelas VIII 4 sebagai kelas kontrol yang akan diajarkan menggunakan model pembelajran konvensional. Kelas VIII 3 terdiri atas 34 siswa dan kelas VIII 4 terdiri atas 35 siswa. Hasil dari analisis data menujukan bahwa siswa yang diajar menggunakan model pembelajaran berbasis proyek memiliki pencapaian lebih baik dibandingkan dengan siswa yang diajar menggunakan model pembelajaran convensional. Hasil analisis statistik secra deskriptif dari rata-rata skor pencapaian menulis bahasa inggris pada kelas control adalah 72,29, sedangkan kelas eksperimen adalah 76,94. Hasil dari analisis t-test dari tobs adalah 2,03 dimana nilai itu lebih beras dari nilai tcv yang sebesar 1,996008 (α=0,05). bisa disimpulkan bahwa pembelajaran berbasis proyek memberikan efek yang signifikan terhadap pencapaian menulis bahasa inggris siswa.Kata Kunci : pembelajaran berbasis proyek, Pencapaian menulis bahasa inggris, Recount Teks This experimental study aimed at finding out the significant effect of project-based learning on the writing achievement of the eighth grade students of SMP Laboratorium Undiksha, Singaraja in academic year of 2015/2016 in writing a recount text. Post-test only control group was the design used in this study. Population of this study was all eighth grade students of SMP Laboratorium Undiksha, Singaraja which consisted of 139 students and distributed into four classes. Random sampling technique was used in order to define which class selected as the control group and which class selected as the experiment group, resulting in VIII 3 class randomly selected as the experiment group which was taught by Project-Based Learning method and VIII 4 class randomly selected as the control group which was taught by conventional teaching method. VIII 3 class consisted of 34 students and VIII 4 class consisted of 35 students. The result of data analysis show that the students taught by Project-Based Learning performed better than those who were taught by conventional teaching method. The descriptive statistic analysis shows that the mean score of the control group was 72.29, while the experiment group was 76.94. The result of t-test analysis of the tobs was 2.03. It was higher than the value of the tcv which was 1.996008 (α = 0.05). The value (sig.) was 0.046. The sig. value (0.046) was lower than the value of α. Therefore it can be concluded, Project-Based Learning has a significant effect on the students’ writing achievement in writing a recount text.keyword : Project-Based Learning, Writing Achievement, Recount Text

Abstract

This research was aimed to design and develop culture-based English learning material for second semester of grade seven of junior high schools in Buleleng sub-district to support the implementation of curriculum 2013. This research was designed as research and development by following RnD model proposed by Peffers et.al (2007) as cited in Ellis and levy (2010) which consisted of six steps. The development of English learning material was in form of textbook. The development of English material was based on the need analysis. The data of need analysis were gained through the interview, questionnaires, and analysis the syllabus. Settings of this research were nine junior high schools in Buleleng sub-district. Balinese cultural values and character values in the textbook were integrated through the pictures, stories, dialogues, learning activities. Data were analyzed both qualitatively and quantitaviely.The quality of the textbook was assessed through expert judgment. Three aspects in the textbook were assessed through expert judgment form, namely content aspect, presentation aspect, and the aspect of integration of Balinese culture and character values. Based on the scores given by two experts, the quality of the textbook was categorized as excellent quality since the score given by expert 1 was 156 and expert 2 was 152. The reliability of the data was measured by using Alpha Cronbach’s coefficient. The result of the data analysis showed that α Cronbach’s coefficient was 0.77 and it was categorized as acceptable. In short, the developed culture-based English textbook has good quality and the data were reliable. Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah peningkatan kemampuan berbicara siswa dalam Bahasa Inggris dengan penggunaan podcast dalam kegiatan belajar mengajar Bahasa Inggris. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di SMA Negeri 1 Amlapura. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas X MIA 1, dengan kemampuan  siswa kelas X MIA 1 dalam berbicara dengan menggunakan Bahasa Inggris sebagai objek penelitian. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian tindakan kelas (PTK) yang dilakukan dalam dua siklus, masing-masing siklus meliputi langkah-langkah, perencanaan tindakan, pelaksanaan tindakan, observasi/evaluasi dan refleksi. Data yang diambil dalam penelitian ini adalah data kualitatif dan data kuantitatif. Data kualitatif diperoleh dari hasil kuisioner dan observasi. Sementara data kuntitatif didapat melalui hasil pre-test dan post-test yang diberikan kepada siswa. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa nilai rata-rata kemampuan berbicara siswa dengan menggunakan Bahasa inggris saat pre-test sebesar 60.43, pada post-test 1 sebesar 72.46, pada post-test 2 mencapai 79.78 dan jumlah siswa yang mencapai nilai ketuntasan dalam berbicara Bahasa Inggris naik menjadi 83.33%. Oleh karena itu, dapat dikatakan bahwa implementasi podcast sebagai media pembelajaran dalam kegiatan belajar mengajar Bahasa Inggris dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berbicara siswa. Selain itu, berdasarkan hasil kuesioner dan observasi selama kegiatan belajar mengajar berlangsung, dapat disimpulkan bahwa media pembelajaran ini juga dapat meningkatkan motivasi siswa untuk belajar Bahasa Inggris.Kata Kunci : Berbicara, Kemampuan berbicara, TIK, Podcast The objective of this research was to improve students’ English speaking competency by using podcast in teaching and learning. This research was conducted in SMA Negeri 1 Amlapura, as the subject of the research was the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Amlapura, i.e. X MIA 1 class. The object of research was English speaking competency of X MIA 1 students. The method used in this study was Classroom Action Research (CAR), conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of the steps of planning, action, observation/evaluation and reflection. There were two kinds of data collected in this research namely qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were obtained from the questionnaires and observation checklist. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were collected by conducting speaking pre-test and post-test. The result of study showed that the main score of the students’ English speaking competency gained on the pre-test was 60.43, on the post-test 1 was 72.46 and on post-test 2 was 79.78 and 83.33% of students could pass the standard minimum score. It can be concluded that the English speaking competency of the X MIA 1 students could be improved by using podcast in English teaching and learning. In addition, the result of the questionnaire and observation in the classroom showed that the students were more motivated to learn by using podcast.keyword : Speaking, Speaking Competency, ICT, Podcast

Abstract

Penelitian ini telah dilaksanakan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan menulis dan motivasi siswa menggunakan tehnik Dictogloss pada siswa kelas 8 di SMPN 4 Singaraja. Pada penelitian awal menyatakan bahwa siswa kelas VIIIB3 di SMPN 4 Singaraja memiliki kemampuan menulis yang rendah serta motivasi belajar yang rendah. Subject pada penelitian ini berjumlah 37 orang siswa. Untuk menemukan hasil dari kemampuan siswa pada kempetensi menulis menggunakan tehnik Dictogloss , dan penulis menggunakan jenis penelitian penelitian tindakan kelas (PTK) penelitian ini menggunakan dua siklus. Setiap siklus terdiri dari empat proses, diantaranya: rencana, pelaksanaan,penelitian, dan refleksi. Untuk mengumpulkan data, penulis menggunakan informasi yang didapat pada observasi. Dan pencapaian siswa pada penelitian awal digunakan untuk mendukung pengumpulan data. Penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa menggunakan tehnik Dictogloss dalam menulis mampu meningkatkan kompetensi dan motivasi siswa dalam menulis. Data telah dikumpulkan berdasarkan evaluasi menulis. Respon siswa menunjukan bahwa mereka bersemangat untuk menulis, karena mereka merasa lebih mudah untuk menulis menggunakan Dictogloss tehnik. Persentase siswa yang mampu mencapai standar nilai pada observasi awal hanya 13 siswa (35.14%), pada siklus I 22 siswa (59.5%), sementara itu, pada siklus 2 meningkat menjadi 29 siswa (78.4%). Itu bisa disimpulkan bahwa implementasi tehnik Dictogloss dapat meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa. Dan penulis menyarankan pada guru bahasa inggris untuk menggunakan tehnik Dictogloss dalam mengajar menulis.Kata Kunci : Kata Kunci:Kompetensi menulis,tehnik Dictogloss This study was conducted to improve students writing competency and motivation using Dictogloss technique at eighth grades students of SMPN 4 Singaraja. The Preliminary observation indicated that student class VIIIB3 of SMP Negeri 4 Singaraja had low writing competency and low motivation in learnign. The subjects of this study were consisted of 37 students. To find out the result of students writing ability in writing competency using Dictogloss technique, the writer used Classroom Action Research (CAR) as the method of research. This study consisted of two cycles, each cycle consisted of four steps, and they were: planning, action, observation, and reflection. To collect and analyze the data, the writer used the information from observation, and the students’ achievement in preliminary and evaluation to support data collected. This study showed that using Dictogloss technique in teaching writing can improve students’ writing competency and motivation. The students’ responses showed that they were excited in writing because they felt easier to write using Dictogloss technique. The percentage of students who had passed the passing score of writing in preliminary research were 13 students (35.14%), in cycle I were 22 students (59.5%), meanwhile in cycle II were improved into 29 students (78.4%). It could be concluded that the implementation of Dictogloss technique could improve the students’ writing competency. And the writer suggested to the other English teacher to use Dictogloss Technique in teaching writing. keyword : Key Words: Dictogloss technique, Writing competency.

Abstract

This study aimed at (1) investigating and analyzing the types of communication strategies used by the people involved in Ngidih wedding ceremonny and (2) knowing the motives of the use communication strategies in Ngidih wedding process. The subjects of this study were two kelian adat, two kelian dinas, pangeter, groom’s and bride parents in Padangbulia village. The data were collected by using the researcher as the main instrument helped by some devices, namely non-participant observation, audio-video recorder, interview and field note. The types of communication strategies were gathered by observing and recording the people involved during Ngidih wedding process, while the interview guides were used to gather the data about the motives in using the types of communication strategies used by the respondents. The results of this study showed that there were 9 types of communication strategies used by prajuru (manggala desa), groom’s and bride’s family. Mime strategy was the most frequently used by prajuru (manggala desa), groom’s and bride’s family. The motives of using those strategies among the respondents were intented to make everthing clear and acceptable. They also said that it was usually shown naturally by them in order to emphasize the aims, and they used gesture or facial expression to express their feeling in their speech. The used of gesture was believed to be able to make the interaction much calmer and more relax in using communication strategies during Ngidih wedding process.keyword : communication strategies, ngidih wedding ceremony, balinese hinduism marriage

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk (1) mengetahui tipe-tipe strategi komunikasi yang digunakan oleh guru Bahasa Inggris di Taman Kanak-Kanak Suta Dharma dalam berkomunikasi dengan siswa, (2) mengetahui strategi komunikasi yang paling banyak digunakan oleh guru Bahasa Inggris dalam berkomunikasi dengan siswa, (3) mengetahui alasan dari guru Bahasa Inggris dalam menerapkan strategi komunikasi tertentu dalam berkomunikasi dengan para siswa. Penelitian ini bersifat kualitaitif. Subyek dari penelitian ini adalah seorang guru Bahasa Inggris yang mengajar pada pelajaran Bahasa Inggris kepada siswa di Taman Kanak-Kanak Suta Dharma. Guru menggunakan lebih dari satu bahasa yaitu bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Bali di dalam pelajaran Bahasa Inggris. Bahasa Indonesia dan Bahasa Bali digunakan untuk membantu siswa mengerti dengan bahasa yang ingin dicapai. Objek dari penelitian ini adalah strategi komunikasi yang meliputi approximation, circumlocution, massage abandonment, code switch, repetition, literal translation, appeal for assistance, mime, generalization, drawl, reconstruction, topic avoidance, dan word coinage. Hasil dari penelitian ini memperlihatkan bahwa guru menerapkan delapan dari tiga belas strategi komunikasi dalam pengajaran Bahasa Inggris di Taman Kanak-Kanak Suta Dharma yaitu : topic avoidance, message abandonment, code switch, approximation, circumlocution, repetition, literal translation, dan mime. Strategi komunikasi yang paling banyak digunakan oleh guru Bahasa Inggris adalah code switch. Terdapat dua alasan mengapa guru di Suta Dharma Kindergarten menerapkan startegi komunikasi yaitu (1) untuk membuat para siswa mengerti tentang apa yang guru ucapkan dan (2) kurangnya kemampuan Bahasa Inggris dari guru tersebut. Kata Kunci : komunikasi, strategi komunikasi, bilingual This study aimed at finding out (1) the types of communication strategies which were used by the English teacher at Suta Dharma Kindergarten in communicating with students, (2) the communication strategy which was most frequently used by English Teacher in communicating with students, (3) English teacher’s reasons in applying the communication strategies to communicate with students. This study was qualitative. The subject of this study was an English teacher who taught the English lesson to the students at Suta Dharma Kindergarten. The teacher used more than one language which were Indonesian and Balinese in teaching English. Indonesian and Balinese were used to help the students understand the target language. The object of this study was communication strategies which included approximation, circumlocution, massage abandonment, code switch, repetition, literal translation, appeal for assistance, mime, generalization, drawl, reconstruction, topic avoidance, and word coinage. The results of this study showed that the teacher applied eight out of thirteen of communication strategies in teaching English at Suta Dharma Kindergarten that had been observed, namely: topic avoidance, message abandonment, code switch, approximation, circumlocution, repetition, literal translation, and mime. The communication strategy that was most frequently used by the English teacher was code switch. There were two reasons why the teacher at Suta Dharma Kindergarten applied the communication strategies. Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui makna, fungsi dan strategi yang digunakan dalam penerjemahan peribahasa dalam film yang berjudul The Avengers : Age of Ultron. Analisia peribahasa ini dilakukan karena kata – kata yang terikat dengan budaya bahasa atau dikenal dengan istilah peribahasa sangat menarik untuk dipelajari dan terkadang makna yang mereka tidak selalu sesuai dengan yang diungkapkannya. Peneliti menggunakan film sebagai sumber pengambilan data karena film memberikan gambaran tentang penutur bahasa asing dalam percakapanya sehari – hari dan film yang berjudul The Avengers : Age of ultron digunakan karena film ini merupakan film baru dan merupakan film yang paling tunggu – tunggu di tahun 2015. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah (1) untuk mengetahui makna dari peribahasa dalam film berjudul The Avengers : Age of Ultron, (2) untuk mengetahui fungsi peribahasa dalam film berjudul The Avengers : Age of Ultron dan (3) untuk mengetahui strategi penerjemahan peribahasa dalam film yang berjudul The Avengers : Age of Ultron. Desain penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Data tersebut dikumpulkan dengan menonton, mengidentifikasi dan mengklasifikaasi makna, fungsi dan strategi dalam penerjemahan peribahasa. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah ScramCypher yang menyediakan transkripsi bahasa Inggris dan Indonesia untuk film tersebut. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat 83 peribahasa yang ditemukan dalam film tersebut. Makna dari peribahasa tersebut dianalisis menggunakan konsep kontekstual oleh Halliday (2010) dan dapat disimpulkan bahwa sebagian besar peribahasa tersebut menggunakan konteks situasi dalam penggunaannya dalam film tersebut. Fungsi peribahasa tersebut dianalisis menggunakan teori McCharty dan O’dell dan sebagian besar peribahasa tersebut memiliki fungsi untuk mengkomentari orang. Dalam analisa strategi penerjemahan, hanya 60 dari 83 peribahasa yang terjemahkan dengan benar dan strategi yang paling sering digunakan dalam penerjemahan tersebut adalah 1) translation by paraphrase, 2) using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form, 3) using an idiom of similar meaning and form and 4) translation by omissionKata Kunci : Fungsi, Peribahasa, Makna, Strategi This study aims at finding out the meanings, functions and strategies used in the translation of idioms in movie entitled The Avengers : Age of Ultron. The analysis of the idioms was done because words which are culturally bound with language or known as idioms are very interesting to be learned and sometimes their meanings are not exactly as what they say. The researcher used a movie as a source of data collection because it gave a reflection of native speakers in their daily conversation and the movie entitled “The Avengers : Age of Ultron” is used because this is a brand new movie in 2015 and it is the highest grossing movie of 2015. The purposes of this research were: (1) to find the meanings of idioms in the movie entitled The Avengers : Age of Ultron, (2) to find out the functions of idioms in the movie entitled The Avengers : Age of Ultron, and (3) to find out the strategies used in the translation of idioms in the movie entitled The Avengers : Age of Ultron. This research was designed as a descriptive qualitative research. The data were collected through watching, identifying, and classifying the meanings, the functions and the strategies used in the translation of idioms. The subject in this study is ScramCypher who provided both English and Indonesian subtitles in the movie. The result of this study showed that there are 83 idioms found in the movie. The meanings of idioms were analyzed using contextual concepts of meaning by Halliday (2010) and it can be concluded that most of the idioms consider context of situation on its usage in the movie. The functions of idioms were analyzed using McCharty and O’dell theory and most idioms found in the movie functioned to comment on people. In analyzing the translation strategies, there were only 60 idioms out of 83 which were translated equivalently and the most frequent translation strategies used are 1) translation by paraphrase, 2) using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form, 3) using an idiom of similar meaning and form and 4) translation by omissionkeyword : Function, Idioms, Meaning, Strategies.
