Abstract

The study of anti-inflammatory activity and isolation of the methanolic extract, hexane and ethyl acetate fractions of the leaves of puwarkincung (Nicolaia speciosa Horan) have been done. Isolation was carried out by extraction, fractionation and multiple column chromatographicmethod, followed by recrystallization technique. Two compounds were isolated and labeled as F4 and S3. F4 was derived from n-hexanefraction as yellowish-white crystals (20 mg) with mp. 55–57 oC and S3 from the ethyl acetate fraction (15 mg) as yellow crystals with mp.68–69 oC. Anti-inflammatory activity of methanolic extract using Paw Edema method showed that the dose 250 and 1000mg/kgbw wereactive as anti inflammatory agents.

Abstract

Study on isolation of catechin from gambier (Uncaria gambier (Hunter). Roxb) for pharmaceutical and cosmetic uses has been conducted.Raw materials of gambier were collected from three different areas including Andalas University Medicinal Plant Garden, Lima Puluh Kotaand Siguntur Pesisir Selatan, West Sumatera. Catechin was isolated from gambier using two methods, namely purification and pre nonpurification. Several evalutions on quality of the obtained catechin was done including descriptions of the catechins, solubility, colorreactions, thin layer chromatography, yield, drying shrinkage, melting point and maximum uptake levels of catechins. The best results forpharmaceutical and cosmetic uses are gambier originated from Siguntur with pre purification method which obtained 56.3% yield and 96.17%levels of catechins.

Abstract

Optimization of extraction of total triterpenoid content from pegagan (Centela asiatica (Linn) Urban) originated from three locations inRiau province; kecamatan Siak Hulu, kabupaten Kampar, kecamatan Belilas, kabupaten Pelalawan and kecamatan Tampan kota Pekanbaruwas carried out using soxhlet method. n-Hexane and methanol were used as eluent and 8 grams of active carbon as adsorbent. The resultrevealed that pegagan originated from kabupaten Kampar showed the highest yield with total triterpenoid content of 3.94%, while otherspegagan afforded lower yield; 1.25% for kabupaten pelalawan and 1.91% for kota Pekanbaru.

Abstract

An in-vivo anti-inflammatory study of pyrazoline compound synthesized from chalcone has been carried out using Paw Edema method.Compound (R)-3-(4-florofenil)-1-fenil-5-(tiofen-2-il)-4, 5-dihidro-1H-pyrazole was synthesized by milling method in alkaline condition, with no solvent addition and was conducted under room temperature. Characterization of the synthesized compound was determined using1H-NMR and HR-MS spectrometer. As for anti-inflammatory study, suspension of compound (R)-3-(4-florofenil)-1-fenil-5-(tiofen-2-il)-4,5-dihidro-1H-pyrazol was administrated orally to white female mice (Rattus novergicus) with doses 20, 40, 80 mg/kg bw, respectively. Theresult showed that the compound with doses 40 and 80 mg/kg bw exhibited insignificant difference compared with standard drugs Celecoxiband Piroksikam (p>0,05). Futhermore, all doses of compound did not cause any damage of stomach organ of mice, which is given the same“ulcer index” (Iu) with negative control (Iu 2,00). Meanwhile, ulcer index for Celecoxib of Iu 35,99 and Piroksikam of Iu 70,01.

Abstract

A study on gel formulation of cinnamomum oil as mosquito repellent has been done against Aedes aegypti. This study was aimed to determinethe most effective formula as mosquito repellent from two different concentrations of oil in gel formulation. Two different concentrations12 and 15% of cinnanmomum oil were formulated in to gel form with addition 1% of clove oil as its fixative. The formulation of bothconcentrations of cinnamomum oil resulted good gel formula based on its organoleptic, pH, homogeneity and physically stable. However, both formulas could cause skin irritation. Gel formula with 15% concentration of oil showed the most effective effect against Aedes aegyptiwith six hours of tested period.

Abstract

A study on antifungal effect of liquid soap formulation of extract of pineapple stem (Ananas comosus L) has been carried out towardsCandida albicans. Three different concentrations of extract 3; 5 and 7%, were formulated as liquid soap using TEA, stearic acid andglycerine as its soap bases. Several evaluations were examined on the liquid soap formulation including organoleptic examination, determinationof relative density, viscosity, foam test, pH test, and skin irritation test. While antifungal effect test of the obtained formulations was testedon PDA medium. The result revealed that extract of pineapple stem was successfully formulated and physically stable in liquid soap form. The antifungal effect test showed that formula with 7% concentration of extract demonstrated the strongest effect with 21.3 mm diameterof inhibition towards Candida albicans.

Abstract

Hepatoprotective activity and acute toxicity from extract of gambir (Uncaria gambir. Roxb) was investigated. The animals were groupedinto seven groups which consist of 5 female mice for each group. Mice from group I were only administrated orally with palm oil, 1% frombody weight for two days and 1% of gum suspension orally at day two. Group II were given CCl4 with dose 1.25 ml/kgbw in 10% of palm oilfor two days and gum suspension orally 1 hour after CCl4 given at day two. Group III, IV, V were given CCl4 with dose 1.25 ml/kgbw in 10%of palm oil for two days and followed by administration of gambir suspension orally 1 hour after CCl 4 given at day two with concentrations30; 100 and 300 mg/kgbw, respectively. At day 3, all the blood were taken and were examined its SGOT and SGPT. While the isolated liverwere weighed and the ratio between liver weight and body weight of mice were also observed. Acute toxicity test was conducted using fiveanimal groups consist of 5 female mice and 5 male mice. Each of mice then was given gambir suspension orally with doses of 1; 2; 4; 8 and15 g/kgbw, respectively. LD50 was defined as dose which can cause 50% death of total mice from each group. The result can be concluded thatgambir extract was found to be active as hepatoprotective agent with dose 30; 100 dan 300 mg/kgbw. Futhermore, extract of gambir couldreduced the ratio of liver weight and based on the LD 50 value obtained (24 hours, >15 g/kgbw), gambir was classify as non toxic.
